Consumer valuation of energy-saving features of residential air conditioners with hedonic and choice models

The promotion of energy-efficient appliances is necessary to reduce the energetic and environmental burden of the household sector. However, many studies have reported that a typical consumer underestimates the benefits of energy-saving investment on the purchase of household electric appliances. To analyze this energy-efficiency gap problem, many scholars have estimated implicit discount rates that consumers use for energy-consuming durables. Although both hedonic and choice models have been used in previous studies, a comparison between two models has not yet been done. This study uses point of sale data about Japanese residential air conditioners and estimates implicit discounts rates with both hedonic and choice models. Both models demonstrate that a typical consumer underinvests in energy efficiency. Although choice models estimate a lower implicit discount rate than hedonic models, the latter models estimate the values of other product characteristics more consistently than choice models.

Supply chain cost saving potential analysis

Target of this study was to examine the current supply chain with focus on external part and identify the cost potential areas which lie there. The goal was to evaluate the cost save potential and give estimate what would be required in order to realise it. Base data related to study was searched and examined with using company’s enterprise resource planning system. In case feasible two types of scenarios were built in order to describe the scale of save potential. First scenario was theoretical and achieving it would require further investments and second scenario was realistic approach where more limitations were taken into account. The results clearly show that there is high save potential in supply chain costs linked to balance between internal and external operations. Realising of it would require at least minor investments as current internal capacity is not on a level to fully absorb the additional volumes which are needed in order to realise the potential. This study can be used as a basis when starting new projects related to investment needs.

Ihmisten johtaminen taistelussa : elokuva Saving Private Ryan johtamisen opettamisen työkaluna

Johtamisen opetuksessa yleensä käytetty menetelmä on pohjautunut dia- tai vielä perinteisempään kalvoesitykseen. Opetuksen elävöittämisessä sekä viretason ja motivaation ylläpitämisessä opetuksen aikana ei ole tapahtunut juurikaan kehitystä. Opiskelijoiden keskittyminen valuu hukkaan, kun kaikki tarmo pitää laittaa siihen, että pysyy hereillä opetuksen aikana. Elokuvien käyttö opetuksen apuna on hiljalleen vallannut jalansijaa itselleen. Kuitenkin niiden käyttö on edelleen hyvin rajallista, vaikka ne ovat äärimmäisen tehokas ja helppo keino sekä elävöittää että piristää opetusta. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on, selvittää yhden potentiaalisen vaihtoehdon, Saving Private Ryan – Pelastakaa sotamies Ryan, käytettävyyttä johtamisen opetuksen työkaluna ja apuvälineenä. Toisena tavoitteena tutkimukselle voidaan pitää ajatusta, että tämä tutkimus innostaisi aktiiviseen elokuvien tarkasteluun, varsinkin johtamisen opetuksen näkökulmasta sekä elokuvien käytäntöön soveltamiseen. Tutkimuksessa lähestyttiin edellä mainitun elokuvan kahta johtajaa, kapteeni Milleriä ja kersantti Horvathia. Tutkimuksen pääkysymykset oli suhteutettu heidän johtamiskäyttäytymisessä mahdollisesti esiintyvään syväjohtamiseen, syväjohtamisen malliin ja johtajalle luontaisiin ominaisuuksiin. Pääkysymysten tueksi tutkimukselle asetettiin myös alakysymyksiä, joiden avulla oli tarkoituksena selventää edellä mainittujen henkilöiden johtamisprosessin hallintaa, sotilaskuria ja alaisista huolenpitoa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin perusanalyysimenetelmää, jota voidaan käyttää kaikissa laadullisissa tutkimuksissa. Kyseessä on sisällönanalyysi, tarkemmin sanottuna teorialähtöinen sisällönanalyysi. Tutkimuksen teoriaosan avulla rakennetut strukturoidut analyysirungot ohjasivat henkilöiden johtamiskäyttäytymisen analysointia. Tuloksien perusteella voidaan vilpittömästi todeta, että tulevaisuudessa elokuvien käyttö opetuksen apuna tulee näyttelemään suurta osaa. Elokuvat tuovat opetukseen tarvittavaa piristystä ja mahdollistavat esimerkiksi aktiivimonisteiden tehokkaan käytön.

Energy saving potential in reservoir pumping

Pumping systems account for up to 22 % of the energy consumed by electrical motors in European industry. Many studies have shown that there is also a lot of potential for energy savings in these systems with the improvement of devices, flow control or surrounding sys-tem. The best method for more energy efficient pumping has to be found for each system separately. This thesis studies how energy saving potential in reservoir pumping system is affected by surrounding variables, such as the static head variation and friction factor. The objective is to create generally applicable graphs to quickly compare methods for reducing pumping system’s energy costs. The gained results are several graphs showcasing how the chosen variables affect energy saving potential of the pumping system in one specific case. To judge if these graphs are generally applicable, more testing with different pumps and environments are required.

Words on wisdom: perspective transformation in a "learning in retirement institute" /

In this study, 7 men and women with an average age of 77 were interviewed regarding their experience of attending courses at a Learning in Retirement Institute (LRI) in southern Ontario. The purpose was to explore the role of wisdom in the learning of these retirees. Explicit theories of wisdom developed by selected philosophers, psychologists, and religious thinkers were compared to the implicit theories of wisdom that respondents expressed. Further comparisons were drawn between these implicit theories of wisdom and the act of perspective transformation in transformative learning. Some evidence was found that the development of wisdom compares favourably to perspective transformation, especially with regards to the behavioural changes associated with critical self-reflection. Among all the respondents, those 3 LRI stude.its who had also moderated courses indicated that they had experienced the most opportunities for critical self-reflection. These 3 also expressed deep satisfaction in having been able to put their learnings to use as teachers. A recommendation of this study is that opportunities for sharing and acting upon the results of discourse within Learning in Retirement Institutes should be implemented. In the absence of evaluation, opportunities for praxis (such as coop placements) must be developed so that students can measure their success against objective criteria and hence attach meaning to their studies.

Why Have Aggregate Skilled Hours Become So Cyclical Since the Mid-1980's?

This paper documents and discusses a dramatic change in the cyclical behavior of aggregate hours worked by individuals with a college degree (skilled workers) since the mid-1980’s. Using the CPS outgoing rotation data set for the period 1979:1-2003:4, we find that the volatility of aggregate skilled hours relative to the volatility of GDP has nearly tripled since 1984. In contrast, the cyclical properties of unskilled hours have remained essentially unchanged. We evaluate the extent to which a simple supply/demand model for skilled and unskilled labor with capital-skill complementarity in production can help explain this stylized fact. Within this framework, we identify three effects which would lead to an increase in the relative volatility of skilled hours: (i) a reduction in the degree of capital-skill complementarity, (ii) a reduction in the absolute volatility of GDP (and unskilled hours), and (iii) an increase in the level of capital equipment relative to skilled labor. We provide empirical evidence in support of each of these effects. Our conclusion is that these three mechanisms can jointly explain about sixty percent of the observed increase in the relative volatility of skilled labor. The reduction in the degree of capital-skill complementarity contributes the most to this result.

Development of energy saving forms of natural rubber

Although the physical and technological properties of modified rubbers were compared with those of conventional rubbers in the earlier studies reviewed above, the extent of energy saving possible by their use has not been quantified. In the present work it is proposed to determine the energy saving possible by using the following forms of natural rubber: 1. Oil extended natural rubber, 2. peptised natural rubber, 3. latex stage compounds. The process of production and quality control of the above types of processed rubbers are proposed to be standardised. It is also planned to work out a methodology for utilising field coagula for production of constant viscosity rubbers. The variation in processing properties of rubber from popular Indian clones will be examined and those with energy advantages in the processing stage will be identified. In conclusion a recommendation for adoption of a commercially advantageous processing procedure among Indian rubber plantation industry is also given.

Cambios en el régimen de pensiones en Colombia y su efecto en el margen intensivo de la oferta laboral

En Colombia, como en muchos países de América Latina, en los años 80 y 90 se hicieron cambios importantes en los regímenes de pensiones. Este trabajo hace un análisis de uno de esos cambios en Colombia. El cambio consistió en aumentar el tiempo de cotización necesario para reclamar los beneficios pensionales y la inclusión del salario dentro de la fórmula del monto de pensiones. Para este propósito se estudia el impacto sobre la oferta laboral de un cambio exógeno en estas condiciones usando un diseño de regresión discontinua. Se encuentra un efecto positivo sobre las horas promedio trabajadas en la semana.

Parametric pension reform and the intensive margin of labor supply, evidence from Colombia

We analyze the effect of a parametric reform of the fully-funded pension regime in Colombia on the intensive margin of the labor supply. We take advantage of a threshold defined by law in order to identify the causal effect using a regression discontinuity design. We find that a pension system that increases retirement age and the minimum weeks during which workers must contribute to claim pension benefits causes an increase of around 2 hours on the number of weekly worked hours; this corresponds to 4% of the average number of weekly worked hours or around 14% of a standard deviation of weekly worked hours. The effect is robust to different specifications, polynomial orders and sample sizes.

Este trabajo desarrolla un modelo de generaciones traslapadas con expectativa de vida endógena y capital humano. Recoge parte de la evidencia empírica acerca de la transición demográfica explicada por Notestein en 1945, donde variaciones en la longevidad de los individuos afectan positivamente el crecimiento económico de un país. El modelo establece que la falta de incentivos para invertir en salud estanca a una economía en una trampa de pobreza y muestra que incrementos en la productividad en el sector de producción de capital humano, al igual que cambios tecnológicos sesgados al uso intensivo del mismo, incrementan el producto de estado estacionario y pueden sacar a una economía de una trampa de pobreza.
