Membranes of Poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI), prepared by polycondensation in polyphosphoric acid, were characterized from the fuel cell application point of view: mechanical properties of the membranes for different acid doping levels, thermal stability, permeability for the different gases/vapors susceptible of use in the cell (hydrogen, oxygen, methanol and ethanol), electro-osmotic water drag coefficient, oxidation stability to hydroxyl radicals, phosphoric acid leaching rate and, finally, in-plane membrane conductivity. ABPBI membranes presented an excellent thermal stability, above 500 degrees C in oxygen, suitable mechanical properties for high phosphoric acid doping levels, a low methanol and ethanol limiting permeation currents, and oxygen permeability compared to Nafion membranes, and a low phosphoric acid leaching rate when exposed to water vapor. On the contrary, hydrogen permeation current was higher than that of Nafion, and the chemical stability was very limited. Membrane conductivity achieved 0.07 S cm(-1) after equilibration with a humid environment. Fuel cell tests showed reasonable good performances, with a maximum power peak of 170 mW cm(-2) for H-2/air at 170 degrees C operating under a humidified hydrogen stream, 39.9 mW cm(-2) for CH3OH/O-2 at 200 degrees C for a methanol/water weight ratio of 1: 2, and 31.5 mW cm(-2) for CH3CH2OH/O-2 at the same conditions than for methanol. In this paper, Co/CeO2 catalysts, with different cobalt contents were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and were evaluated for the steam reforming of ethanol. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 physisorption (BET method), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance, temperature programmed reduction analysis (TPR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). It was observed that the catalytic behavior could be influenced by the experimental conditions and the nature of the catalyst employed. Physical-chemical characterizations revealed that the cobalt content of the catalyst influences the metal-support interaction which results in distinct catalyst performances. The catalyst with the highest cobalt content showed the best performance among the catalysts tested, exhibiting complete ethanol conversion, hydrogen selectivity close to 66% and good stability at a reaction temperature of 600 degrees C. This paper presents simple, rapid, precise and accurate stability-indicating HPLC and CE methods, which were developed and validated for the determination of nitrendipine, nimodipine and nisoldipine. These drugs are calcium channel antagonists of the 1,4-dihydropyridine type which are used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Experimental results showed a good linear correlation between the area and the concentration of drugs covering a relatively large domain of concentration in all cases. The linearity of the analytical procedures was in the range of 2.0-120.0 mu g mL-1 for nitrendipine, 1.0-100.0 mu g mL(-1) for nimodipine and 100.0-600.0 mu g mL(-1) for nisoldipine, the regression determination coefficient being higher than 0.99 in all cases. The proposed methods were found to have good precision and accuracy. The chemical stability of these drugs was determined under various conditions and the methods have shown adequate separation for their enantiomers and degradation products. In addition, degradation products produced as a result of stress studies did not interfere with the detection of the drugs' enantiomers and the assays can thus be considered stability-indicating.

Liposoluble vitamin C derivatives, such as tetra-isopalmitoyl ascorbic acid (IPAA), are often used in dermocosmetic products due to their higher stability than vitamin C free form as well as its proposed effects in skin; however, there are no studies analyzing IPAA stability or its in vivo effects when present in dermocosmetic formulations. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate chemical stability and pre-clinical and clinical efficacy of dermocosmetic formulations containing IPAA in skin hydration and microrelief. Chemical stability of the formulations added with 1% IPAA was evaluated by heat stress during 35 days by HPLC. For pre-clinical evaluation, experimental formulations were topically applied on hairless skin mice during 5 days and animal skins were analyzed by non-invasive biophysic techniques (water content of stratum corneum, TEWL, viscoelasticity, and microrelief) and by histopathological studies. For clinical efficacy tests, the formulations were topically applied to the forearm and face of human volunteers, and 3 h and 15 days after applications, the skins were evaluated by the same non-invasive techniques mentioned before. Results showed that formulations containing IPAA had medium stability and had pronounced moisturizing effects on stratum corneum and on viable epidermis. These formulations also improved skin microrelief especially in relation to skin smoothness and roughness. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the framework of developing defect-based life models, in which breakdown is explicitly associated with partial discharge (PD)-induced damage growth from a defect, ageing tests and PD measurements were carried out in the lab on polyethylene (PE) layered specimens containing artificial cavities. PD activity was monitored continuously during aging. A quasi-deterministic series of stages can be observed in the behavior of the main PD parameters (i.e. discharge repetition rate and amplitude). Phase-resolved PD patterns at various ageing stages were reproduced by numerical simulation which is based on a physical discharge model devoid of adaptive parameters. The evolution of the simulation parameters provides insight into the physical-chemical changes taking place at the dielectric/cavity interface during the aging process. PD activity shows similar time behavior under constant cavity gas volume and constant cavity gas pressure conditions, suggesting that the variation of PD parameters may not be attributed to the variation of the gas pressure. Brownish PD byproducts, consisting of oxygen containing moieties, and degradation pits were found at the dielectric/cavity interface. It is speculated that the change of PD activity is related to the composition of the cavity gas, as well as to the properties of dielectric/cavity interface.

Radiometals play an important role in nuclear medicine as involved in diagnostic or therapeutic agents. In the present work the radiochemical aspects of production and processing of very promising radiometals of the third group of the periodic table, namely radiogallium and radiolanthanides are investigated. The 68Ge/68Ga generator (68Ge, T½ = 270.8 d) provides a cyclotron-independent source of positron-emitting 68Ga (T½ = 68 min), which can be used for coordinative labelling. However, for labelling of biomolecules via bifunctional chelators, particularly if legal aspects of production of radiopharmaceuticals are considered, 68Ga(III) as eluted initially needs to be pre-concentrated and purified. The first experimental chapter describes a system for simple and efficient handling of the 68Ge/68Ga generator eluates with a cation-exchange micro-chromatography column as the main component. Chemical purification and volume concentration of 68Ga(III) are carried out in hydrochloric acid – acetone media. Finally, generator produced 68Ga(III) is obtained with an excellent radiochemical and chemical purity in a minimised volume in a form applicable directly for the synthesis of 68Ga-labelled radiopharmaceuticals. For labelling with 68Ga(III), somatostatin analogue DOTA-octreotides (DOTATOC, DOTANOC) are used. 68Ga-DOTATOC and 68Ga-DOTANOC were successfully used to diagnose human somatostatin receptor-expressing tumours with PET/CT. Additionally, the proposed method was adapted for purification and medical utilisation of the cyclotron produced SPECT gallium radionuclide 67Ga(III). Second experimental chapter discusses a diagnostic radiolanthanide 140Nd, produced by irradiation of macro amounts of natural CeO2 and Pr2O3 in natCe(3He,xn)140Nd and 141Pr(p,2n)140Nd nuclear reactions, respectively. With this produced and processed 140Nd an efficient 140Nd/140Pr radionuclide generator system has been developed and evaluated. The principle of radiochemical separation of the mother and daughter radiolanthanides is based on physical-chemical transitions (hot-atom effects) of 140Pr following the electron capture process of 140Nd. The mother radionuclide 140Nd(III) is quantitatively absorbed on a solid phase matrix in the chemical form of 140Nd-DOTA-conjugated complexes, while daughter nuclide 140Pr is generated in an ionic species. With a very high elution yield and satisfactory chemical and radiolytical stability the system could able to provide the short-lived positron-emitting radiolanthanide 140Pr for PET investigations. In the third experimental chapter, analogously to physical-chemical transitions after the radioactive decay of 140Nd in 140Pr-DOTA, the rapture of the chemical bond between a radiolanthanide and the DOTA ligand, after the thermal neutron capture reaction (Szilard-Chalmers effect) was evaluated for production of the relevant radiolanthanides with high specific activity at TRIGA II Mainz nuclear reactor. The physical-chemical model was developed and first quantitative data are presented. As an example, 166Ho could be produced with a specific activity higher than its limiting value for TRIGA II Mainz, namely about 2 GBq/mg versus 0.9 GBq/mg. While free 166Ho(III) is produced in situ, it is not forming a 166Ho-DOTA complex and therefore can be separated from the inactive 165Ho-DOTA material. The analysis of the experimental data shows that radionuclides with half-life T½ < 64 h can be produced on TRIGA II Mainz nuclear reactor, with specific activity higher than any available at irradiation of simple targets e.g. oxides.

This work focused on the synthesis of novel monomers for the design of a series of oligo(p-benzamide)s following two approaches: iterative solution synthesis and automated solid phase protocols. These approaches present a useful method to the sequence-controlled synthesis of side-chain and main-chain functionalized oligomers for the preparation of an immense variety of nanoscaffolds. The challenge in the synthesis of such materials was their modification, while maintaining the characteristic properties (physical-chemical properties, shape persistence and anisotropy). The strategy for the preparation of predictable superstructures was devote to the selective control of noncovalent interactions, monodispersity and monomer sequence. In addition to this, the structure-properties correlation of the prepared rod-like soluble materials was pointed. The first approach involved the solution-based aramide synthesis via introduction of 2,4-dimethoxybenzyl N-amide protective group via an iterative synthetic strategy The second approach focused on the implementation of the salicylic acid scaffold to introduce substituents on the aromatic backbone for the stabilization of the OPBA-rotamers. The prepared oligomers were analyzed regarding their solubility and aggregation properties by systematically changing the degree of rotational freedom of the amide bonds, side chain polarity, monomer sequence and degree of oligomerization. The syntheses were performed on a modified commercial peptide synthesizer using a combination of fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) and aramide chemistry. The automated synthesis allowed the preparation of aramides with potential applications as nanoscaffolds in supramolecular chemistry, e.g. comb-like-

The aim of this thesis was the formulation of new chitosan based delivery systems for transmucosal drug administration. Transmucosal routes, such as buccal, vaginal and nasal routes, allow the circumvention of the hepatic first pass metabolism and avoid the gastrointestinal chemical and enzymatic degradations. Moreover, transmucosal drug administration can allow to avoid pain or discomfort caused by injections, when drugs are administered through parenteral routes, thus increasing patient compliance. On the other side, the major disadvantage of transmucosal drug administration is represented by the presence of biological fluids and mucus that can remove drug systems from the application site, thus reducing the contact time between drug and mucosa and consequently, decreasing drug bioavailability. For this reason, in this study, the investigation of chitosan delivery systems as mucoadhesive formulations able to increase drugs residence time and to improve their bioavailability, was taken into account. In the paper 1, buccal films based on chitosan-gelatin complexes were prepared and loaded with propranolol hydrochloride. The complexes were characterized and studied in order to evaluate their physical- chemical properties and their ability to release the drug and to allow its permeation through buccal mucosa. In the paper 2, vaginal inserts based on chitosan/alginate complexes were formulated for local delivery of chlorhexidine digluconate. Tests to evaluate the interaction between the polymers and to study drug release properties were performed, as well as the determination of antimicrobial activity against the patogens responsible of vaginitis and candidosis. In the project 3, chitosan based nanoparticles containing cyclodextrin and other excipients, with the capacity to modify insulin bioavailabity were formulated for insulin nasal delivery. Nanoparticles were characterized in terms of size, stability and drug release. Moreover, in vivo tests were performed in order to study the hypoglycemic reduction in rats blood samples.

This doctorate was funded by the Regione Emilia Romagna, within a Spinner PhD project coordinated by the University of Parma, and involving the universities of Bologna, Ferrara and Modena. The aim of the project was: - Production of polymorphs, solvates, hydrates and co-crystals of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and agrochemicals with green chemistry methods; - Optimization of molecular and crystalline forms of APIs and pesticides in relation to activity, bioavailability and patentability. In the last decades, a growing interest in the solid-state properties of drugs in addition to their solution chemistry has blossomed. The achievement of the desired and/or the more stable polymorph during the production process can be a challenge for the industry. The study of crystalline forms could be a valuable step to produce new polymorphs and/or co-crystals with better physical-chemical properties such as solubility, permeability, thermal stability, habit, bulk density, compressibility, friability, hygroscopicity and dissolution rate in order to have potential industrial applications. Selected APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients) were studied and their relationship between crystal structure and properties investigated, both in the solid state and in solution. Polymorph screening and synthesis of solvates and molecular/ionic co-crystals were performed according to green chemistry principles. Part of this project was developed in collaboration with chemical/pharmaceutical companies such as BASF (Germany) and UCB (Belgium). We focused on on the optimization of conditions and parameters of crystallization processes (additives, concentration, temperature), and on the synthesis and characterization of ionic co-crystals. Moreover, during a four-months research period in the laboratories of Professor Nair Rodriguez-Hormedo (University of Michigan), the stability in aqueous solution at the equilibrium of ionic co-crystals (ICCs) of the API piracetam was investigated, to understand the relationship between their solid-state and solution properties, in view of future design of new crystalline drugs with predefined solid and solution properties.

The aim of the study is to contribute to the knowledge and the identification of the main physical and chemical characteristics of the soil that affect the structural stability of soil types forming the soil cover of the plain of Sidi Bel Abbes region for agricultural use by excellence. Structural stability is an indicator of the cohesion of soil aggregates. This is a parameter that expresses the ability of soil aggregates to resist degradation in general the impact of rain or excess water. Measuring the structural stability makes it possible to evaluate the sensitivity a soil crusting and erosion. The results showed that soils subject of our study are stable and very stable with a slight difference. We have a statistical study made it possible to establish a correlation between the structural stability and other physical and chemical soil parameters measured )fersiallitic red soil and brown calcareous soil( such as organic matter content, the rate of total limestone and soil texture, to better explain the stability or instability of the soil structure and to establish a relationship between these parameters and the structural stability. // Keywords: Sidi Bel Abbes, chemical characteristics, physical, structural stability, soil, plain, fersiallitic red soil, brown calcareous soil

Traditional transportation fuel, petroleum, is limited and nonrenewable, and it also causes pollutions. Hydrogen is considered one of the best alternative fuels for transportation. The key issue for using hydrogen as fuel for transportation is hydrogen storage. Lithium nitride (Li3N) is an important material which can be used for hydrogen storage. The decompositions of lithium amide (LiNH2) and lithium imide (Li2NH) are important steps for hydrogen storage in Li3N. The effect of anions (e.g. Cl-) on the decomposition of LiNH2 has never been studied. Li3N can react with LiBr to form lithium nitride bromide Li13N4Br which has been proposed as solid electrolyte for batteries. The decompositions of LiNH2 and Li2NH with and without promoter were investigated by using temperature programmed decomposition (TPD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. It was found that the decomposition of LiNH2 produced Li2NH and NH3 via two steps: LiNH2 into a stable intermediate species (Li1.5NH1.5) and then into Li2NH. The decomposition of Li2NH produced Li, N2 and H2 via two steps: Li2NH into an intermediate species --- Li4NH and then into Li. The kinetic analysis of Li2NH decomposition showed that the activation energies are 533.6 kJ/mol for the first step and 754.2 kJ/mol for the second step. Furthermore, XRD demonstrated that the Li4NH, which was generated in the decomposition of Li2NH, formed a solid solution with Li2NH. In the solid solution, Li4NH possesses a similar cubic structure as Li2NH. The lattice parameter of the cubic Li4NH is 0.5033nm. The decompositions of LiNH2 and Li2NH can be promoted by chloride ion (Cl-). The introduction of Cl- into LiNH2 resulted in the generation of a new NH3 peak at low temperature of 250 °C besides the original NH3 peak at 330 °C in TPD profiles. Furthermore, Cl- can decrease the decomposition temperature of Li2NH by about 110 °C. The degradation of Li3N was systematically investigated with techniques of XRD, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. It was found that O2 could not affect Li3N at room temperature. However, H2O in air can cause the degradation of Li3N due to the reaction between H2O and Li3N to LiOH. The produced LiOH can further react with CO2 in air to Li2CO3 at room temperature. Furthermore, it was revealed that Alfa-Li3N is more stable in air than Beta-Li3N. The chemical stability of Li13N4Br in air has been investigated by XRD, TPD-MS, and UV-vis absorption as a function of time. The aging process finally leads to the degradation of the Li13N4Br into Li2CO3, lithium bromite (LiBrO2) and the release of gaseous NH3. The reaction order n = 2.43 is the best fitting for the Li13N4Br degradation in air reaction. Li13N4Br energy gap was calculated to be 2.61 eV.

Two cruises were carried out in the summer and winter of 1998 to study coupled physical-chemical-biological processes in the South China Sea and their effects on phytoplankton stock and production. The results clearly show that the seasonal distributions of phytoplankton were closely related to the coupled processes driven by the East Asian Monsoon. Summer southwesterly monsoon induced upwelling along the China and Vietnam coasts. Several mesoscale cyclonic cold eddies and anticyclonic warm pools were identified in both seasons. In the summer, the upwelling and cold eddies, both associated with rich nutrients, low dissolved oxygen ( DO), high chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary production ( PP), were found in the areas off the coast of central Vietnam, southeast of Hainan Island and north of the Sunda shelf, whereas in the winter they form a cold trough over the deep basin aligning from southwest to northeast. The warm pools with poor nutrients, high DO, low Chl a, and PP were found in the areas southeast of Vietnam, east of Hainan, and west of Luzon during the summer, and a northwestward warm jet from the Sulu Sea with properties similar to the warm pools was encountered during the winter. The phytoplankton stock and primary production were lower in summer due to nutrient depletion near the surface, particularly PO4. This phosphorus depletion resulted in phytoplankton species succession from diatoms to dinoflagellates and cyanophytes. A strong subsurface Chl a maximum, dominated by photosynthetic picoplankton, was found to contribute significantly to phytoplankton stocks and production.
