The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol proposes a flexible communication solution for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks including sensor networks. It presents the advantage to fit different requirements of potential applications by adequately setting its parameters. When enabling its beacon mode, the protocol makes possible real-time guarantees by using its Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) mechanism. This paper analyzes the performance of the GTS allocation mechanism in IEEE 802.15.4. The analysis gives a full understanding of the behavior of the GTS mechanism with regards to delay and throughput metrics. First, we propose two accurate models of service curves for a GTS allocation as a function of the IEEE 802.15.4 parameters. We then evaluate the delay bounds guaranteed by an allocation of a GTS using Network Calculus formalism. Finally, based on the analytic results, we analyze the impact of the IEEE 802.15.4 parameters on the throughput and delay bound guaranteed by a GTS allocation. The results of this work pave the way for an efficient dimensioning of an IEEE 802.15.4 cluster.

Nos últimos anos começaram a ser vulgares os computadores dotados de multiprocessadores e multi-cores. De modo a aproveitar eficientemente as novas características desse hardware começaram a surgir ferramentas para facilitar o desenvolvimento de software paralelo, através de linguagens e frameworks, adaptadas a diferentes linguagens. Com a grande difusão de redes de alta velocidade, tal como Gigabit Ethernet e a última geração de redes Wi-Fi, abre-se a oportunidade de, além de paralelizar o processamento entre processadores e cores, poder em simultâneo paralelizá-lo entre máquinas diferentes. Ao modelo que permite paralelizar processamento localmente e em simultâneo distribuí-lo para máquinas que também têm capacidade de o paralelizar, chamou-se “modelo paralelo distribuído”. Nesta dissertação foram analisadas técnicas e ferramentas utilizadas para fazer programação paralela e o trabalho que está feito dentro da área de programação paralela e distribuída. Tendo estes dois factores em consideração foi proposta uma framework que tenta aplicar a simplicidade da programação paralela ao conceito paralelo distribuído. A proposta baseia-se na disponibilização de uma framework em Java com uma interface de programação simples, de fácil aprendizagem e legibilidade que, de forma transparente, é capaz de paralelizar e distribuir o processamento. Apesar de simples, existiu um esforço para a tornar configurável de forma a adaptar-se ao máximo de situações possível. Nesta dissertação serão exploradas especialmente as questões relativas à execução e distribuição de trabalho, e a forma como o código é enviado de forma automática pela rede, para outros nós cooperantes, evitando assim a instalação manual das aplicações em todos os nós da rede. Para confirmar a validade deste conceito e das ideias defendidas nesta dissertação foi implementada esta framework à qual se chamou DPF4j (Distributed Parallel Framework for JAVA) e foram feitos testes e retiradas métricas para verificar a existência de ganhos de performance em relação às soluções já existentes.

Feature discretization (FD) techniques often yield adequate and compact representations of the data, suitable for machine learning and pattern recognition problems. These representations usually decrease the training time, yielding higher classification accuracy while allowing for humans to better understand and visualize the data, as compared to the use of the original features. This paper proposes two new FD techniques. The first one is based on the well-known Linde-Buzo-Gray quantization algorithm, coupled with a relevance criterion, being able perform unsupervised, supervised, or semi-supervised discretization. The second technique works in supervised mode, being based on the maximization of the mutual information between each discrete feature and the class label. Our experimental results on standard benchmark datasets show that these techniques scale up to high-dimensional data, attaining in many cases better accuracy than existing unsupervised and supervised FD approaches, while using fewer discretization intervals.

The vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) includes large and dense deployment of interconnected smart sensing and monitoring devices. This vast deployment necessitates collection and processing of large volume of measurement data. However, collecting all the measured data from individual devices on such a scale may be impractical and time consuming. Moreover, processing these measurements requires complex algorithms to extract useful information. Thus, it becomes imperative to devise distributed information processing mechanisms that identify application-specific features in a timely manner and with a low overhead. In this article, we present a feature extraction mechanism for dense networks that takes advantage of dominance-based medium access control (MAC) protocols to (i) efficiently obtain global extrema of the sensed quantities, (ii) extract local extrema, and (iii) detect the boundaries of events, by using simple transforms that nodes employ on their local data. We extend our results for a large dense network with multiple broadcast domains (MBD). We discuss and compare two approaches for addressing the challenges with MBD and we show through extensive evaluations that our proposed distributed MBD approach is fast and efficient at retrieving the most valuable measurements, independent of the number sensor nodes in the network.

This paper examines competition in a spatial model of two-candidate elections, where one candidate enjoys a quality advantage over the other candidate. The candidates care about winning and also have policy preferences. There is two-dimensional private information. Candidate ideal points as well as their tradeoffs between policy preferences and winning are private information. The distribution of this two-dimensional type is common knowledge. The location of the median voter's ideal point is uncertain, with a distribution that is commonly known by both candidates. Pure strategy equilibria always exist in this model. We characterize the effects of increased uncertainty about the median voter, the effect of candidate policy preferences, and the effects of changes in the distribution of private information. We prove that the distribution of candidate policies approaches the mixed equilibrium of Aragones and Palfrey (2002a), when both candidates' weights on policy preferences go to zero.

Brain perfusion can be assessed by CT and MR. For CT, two major techniques are used. First, Xenon CT is an equilibrium technique based on a freely diffusible tracer. First pass of iodinated contrast injected intravenously is a second method, more widely available. Both methods are proven to be robust and quantitative, thanks to the linear relationship between contrast concentration and x-ray attenuation. For the CT methods, concern regarding x-ray doses delivered to the patients need to be addressed. MR is also able to assess brain perfusion using the first pass of gadolinium based contrast agent injected intravenously. This method has to be considered as a semi-quantitative because of the non linear relationship between contrast concentration and MR signal changes. Arterial spin labeling is another MR method assessing brain perfusion without injection of contrast. In such case, the blood flow in the carotids is magnetically labelled by an external radiofrequency pulse and observed during its first pass through the brain. Each of this various CT and MR techniques have advantages and limits that will be illustrated and summarized.Learning Objectives:1. Aquest estudi té com a objectiu principal analitzar les transformacions que s'esdevenen al voltant de la incorporació d'innovacions tecnològiques de l'entorn de les TIC en els processos d'atenció al ciutadà per part de les administracions públiques. Les transformacions que hem analitzat tenen a veure amb tres dimensions que hem considerat bàsiques. D'una banda, ens hem centrat en els canvis que es produeixen en la forma en què els ciutadans (com a principals, tot i que no únics, usuaris) i l'administració es relacionen entre sí. De l'altra hem analitzat les transformacions que s'esdevenen en el funcionament intern i en la pròpia organització de l'administració arran de les transformacions dels canals de comunicació amb els usuaris. Per últim, hem considerat els canvis en la forma de gestionar (dissenyar, planificar, organitzar i dur a terme) el canvi i la innovació, tenint en compte especialment els rols dels diferents actors (no només públics) que hi participen. La recerca es recolza en un ampli estudi empíric sobre la Generalitat de Catalunya i en un estudi compartiu internacional sobre el Quebec, Emillia-Romagna i Escòcia.
