Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a novel research tool in neurology and psychiatry. It is currently being evaluated as a conceivable alternative to electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of mood disorders. Eight healthy young (age range 21-25 years) right-handed men without sleep complaints participated in the study. Two sessions at a 1-week interval, each consisting of an adaptation night (sham stimulation) and an experimental night (rTMS in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex or sham stimulation; crossover design), were scheduled. In each subject, 40 trains of 2-s duration of rTMS (inter-train interval 28 s) were applied at a frequency of 20 Hz (i.e. 1600 pulses per session) and at an intensity of 90% of the motor threshold. Stimulations were scheduled 80 min before lights off. The waking EEG was recorded for 10-min intervals approximately 30 min prior to and after the 20-min stimulations, and polysomnographic recordings were obtained during the subsequent sleep episode (23.00-07.00 h). The power spectra of two referential derivations, as well as of bipolar derivations along the antero-posterior axis over the left and right hemispheres, were analyzed. rTMS induced a small reduction of sleep stage 1 (in min and percentage of total sleep time) over the whole night and a small enhancement of sleep stage 4 during the first non-REM sleep episode. Other sleep variables were not affected. rTMS of the left dorsolateral cortex did not alter the topography of EEG power spectra in waking following stimulation, in the all-night sleep EEG, or during the first non-REM sleep episode. Our results indicate that a single session of rTMS using parameters like those used in depression treatment protocols has no detectable side effects with respect to sleep in young healthy males.

A detailed survey of the Mittelgrund in Eckernförde Bay shows slope breaks at 10-12 m and 15-16 m water depth. They are thought to be mainly the result of marine abrasion. Utilizing records from the Edgerton mud-penetrator, a map of holocene sediment thickness has been drawn. From the pattern of bottom echos 4 types of stratification can be recognized. An interpretation of them is attempted, as they are supposed to serve as models for other transgression contacts.

Lately, several researchers have pointed out that climate change is expected to increase temperatures and lower rainfall in Mediterranean regions, simultaneously increasing the intensity of extreme rainfall events. These changes could have consequences regarding rainfall regime, erosion, sediment transport and water quality, soil management, and new designs in diversion ditches. Climate change is expected to result in increasingly unpredictable and variable rainfall, in amount and timing, changing seasonal patterns and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Consequently, the evolution of frequency and intensity of drought periods is of most important as in agro-ecosystems many processes will be affected by them. Realising the complex and important consequences of an increasing frequency of extreme droughts at the Ebro River basin, our aim is to study the evolution of drought events at this site statistically, with emphasis on the occurrence and intensity of them. For this purpose, fourteen meteorological stations were selected based on the length of the rainfall series and the climatic classification to obtain a representative untreated dataset from the river basin. Daily rainfall series from 1957 to 2002 were obtained from each meteorological station and no-rain period frequency as the consecutive numbers of days were extracted. Based on this data, we study changes in the probability distribution in several sub-periods. Moreover we used the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for identification of drought events in a year scale and then we use this index to fit log-linear models to the contingency tables between the SPI index and the sub-periods, this adjusted is carried out with the help of ANOVA inference.

Background. Stress myocardial contrast echo (MCE) is technically challenging with exercise (Ex) because of cardiacmovementandshort duration ofhyperemia.Vasodilators solve these limitations, but are less potent for inducing abnormal wall motion (WM). We sought whether a combined dipyridamole (DI; 0.56 mg/kg i.v. 4 min) and Ex stress protocol would enable MCE to provide incremental benefit toWManalysis for detection of CAD. Methods. Standard echo images were followed by real time MCE at rest and following stress in 85 pts, 70 undergoing quantitative coronary angiography and 15 low risk pts.WMAfrom standard and LVopacification images, and then myocardial perfusion were assessed sequentially in a blinded fashion. A subgroup of 13 pts also underwent Ex alone, to assess the contribution of DI to quantitative myocardial flow reserve (MFR). Results. Significant (>50%) stenoses were present in 43 pts, involving 69 territories. Addition of MCE improved SE sensitivity for detection of CAD (91% versus 74%, P = 0.02) and better appreciation of disease extent (87% versus 65%territories, P=0.003), with a non-significant reduction in specificity. In 55 territories subtended by a significant stenosis, but with no resting WM abnormality, ability to identify ischemia was also significantly increased by MCE (82% versus 60%, P = 0.002). MFR was less with Ex alone than with DIEx stress (2.4 ± 1.6 versus 4.0 ± 1.9, P = 0.05), suggesting prolongation of hyperaemia with DI may be essential to the results. Conclusions. Dipyridamole-exercise MCE adds significant incremental benefit to standard SE, with improved diagnostic sensitivity and more accurate estimation of extent of CAD.

The issues involved in employing nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) as intensity filters in picosecond soliton transmission were examined in detail. It was shown that inserting NOLMs into a periodically amplified transmission line allowed picosecond solitons to be transmitted under conditions considered infeasible until now. The loop mirrors gave dual function, removing low-power background dispersive waves through saturable absorption and applying a negative feedback mechanism to control the amplitude of the solitons. The stochastic characteristics of the pulses that were due to amplifier spontaneous-emission noise were investigated, and a number of new properties were determined. In addition, the mutual interaction between pulses was also significantly different from that observed for longer-duration solitons. The impact of Raman scattering in the computations was included and it was shown that soliton self-frequency shifts may be eliminated by appropriate bandwidth restrictions.
