Rotational spectra of C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)(34)S, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot HDS, C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot D(2)S and C(6) H(5)CCD center dot center dot center dot H(2)S complexes have been observed using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The observed spectrum is consistent with a structure in which hydrogen sulfide is located over the phenyl ring pi cloud and the distance between the centers of masses of the two monomers is 3.74 +/- 0.01 angstrom. In the complex, the H(2)S unit is shifted from the phenyl ring center towards the acetylene group. The vibrationally averaged structure has an effective Cs symmetry. Ab initio calculations were performed at MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory to locate the possible geometries of the complex. The calculations reveal the experimentally observed structure to be more stable than a coplanar arrangement of the monomers, which was observed for the C(6)H(5)CCH center dot center dot center dot H(2)O complex. Atoms in molecule theoretical analysis shows the presence of S-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen bond. For the parent isotopologue, each transition frequency was found to split into two resulting from an interchange of the equivalent hydrogens of H(2)S unit in the complex. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. The reaction of [Cp*TaCl(4)], 1 (Cp* = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5)), with [LiBH(4)center dot THF] at -78 degrees C, followed by thermolysis in the presence of excess [BH(3)center dot THF], results in the formation of the oxatantalaborane cluster [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(4)H(10)O], 2 in moderate yield. Compound 2 is a notable example of an oxatantalaborane cluster where oxygen is contiguously bound to both the metal and boron. Upon availability of 2, a room temperature reaction was performed with [Fe(2)(CO)(9)], which led to the isolation of [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(2)H(4)O{H(2)Fe(2)(CO)(6)BH} ] 3. Compound 3 is an unusual heterometallic boride cluster in which the [Ta(2)Fe(2)] atoms define a butterfly framework with one boron atom lying in a semi-interstitial position. Likewise, the diselenamolybdaborane, [(Cp*Mo)(2)B(4)H(4)Se(2)], 4 was treated with an excess of [Fe(2)(CO)(9)] to afford the heterometallic boride cluster [(Cp*MoSe)(2)Fe(6)(CO)(13)B(2)(BH)(2)], 5. The cluster core of 5 consists of a cubane [Mo(2)Se(2)Fe(2)B(2)] and a tricapped trigonal prism [Fe(6)B(3)] fused together with four atoms held in common between the two subclusters. In the tricapped trigonal prism subunit, one of the boron atoms is completely encapsulated and bonded to six iron and two boron atoms. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 have been characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, (1)H, (11)B, (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the geometric structures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis. The density functional theory calculations yielded geometries that are in close agreement with the observed structures. Furthermore, the calculated (11)B NMR chemical shifts also support the structural characterization of the compounds. Natural bond order analysis and Wiberg bond indices are used to gain insight into the bonding patterns of the observed geometries of 2, 3, and 5.

In this article, we report the structure of a 1:1 charge transfer complex between pyridine (PYR) and chloranil (CHL) in solution (CHCl(3)) from the measurement of hyperpolarizability (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios, D and D', respectively, by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Using linearly (electric field vector along X) and circularly polarized incident light, respectively, we have measured two macroscopic depolarization ratios D = I(X,X)(2 omega)/I(X,Z)(2 omega) and D' = I(X,C)(2 omega)/I(Z,C)(2 omega) in the laboratory fixed XYZ frame by detecting the second harmonic (SH) scattered light in a polarization resolved fashion. The stabilization energy and the optical gap calculated through the MP2/cc-pVDZ method using Gaussian09 were not significantly different to distinguish between the cofacial and T-shape structures. Only when the experimentally obtained beta(HRS) and the depolarization ratios, D and D', were matched with the theoretically computed values from single and double configuration interaction (SDCI) calculations performed using the ZINDO-SCRF technique, we concluded that the room temperature equilibrium structure of the complex is cofacial. This is in sharp contrast to an earlier theoretical prediction of the T-shape structure of the complex.

A reaction of copper acetate, 5-nitroisophthalic acid in a water-methanol mixture under solvothermal condition results in a new metal-organic framework compound, [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, (1). The compound contains Cu5 pentameric cluster units connected by 5-nitro isophthalate (NIPA) moieties forming a CdCl(2)-like layer, which are further connected by another NIPA moiety forming the three-dimensional structure. The water molecules in (1) can be reversibly adsorbed. The removal of water accompanies a change in the colour as well as a structural re-organization. Magnetic studies suggest strong antiferromagnetie correlations between the Cu5 cluster units. The compound (1) exhibits heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysis for the cyanosilylation of imines with more than 95 % selectivity. Compound (1) has been characterized by IR, UV-vis, TGA, powder XRD studies.

Hybrid inorganic-organic framework materials exhibit unique properties that can be advantageously tuned through choice of the inorganic and organic components and by control of the crystal structure. We present a new hydrothermally prepared 3D hybrid framework, [Mn(2-methylsuccinate)](n) (1), comprising alternating 2D manganese oxide sheets and isolated MnO(6) octahedra, pillared via syn, anti-syn carboxylates. Powder magnetic characterization shows that the compound is a homospin Mn(II) ferrimagnet below 2.4 K. The easy-axis is revealed by single-crystal magnetic susceptibility studies and a magnetic structure is proposed. Anisotropic elastic moduli and hardness, observed through nanoindentation on differing crystal facets, were correlated with specific structural features. Such measurements of anisotropy are not commonly undertaken, yet allow for a more comprehensive understanding of structure-property relationships.

The boronic acid (pS)-1,2-NpFcB(OH)(2) (1) was obtained by treatment of the lithiated species (pS)-1,2-NpFcLi with B(O(i)Pr)(3), followed by acidic workup; subsequent dehydration gave the enantiomerically pure boroxine [(pS)-1,2-NpFcBO](3) (2) in 49% isolated yield. Multinuclear and 2D NMR spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis served to confirm the structure of 2. In the solid-state structure, all three of the naphthyl groups point in one direction and all of the ferrocenyl moieties are placed on the opposite face of the boroxine ring, which is also the preferred conformation in solution according to a (1)H, (1)H-NOESY experiment. Cyclic voltammetry revealed three separate reversible oxidation events, which suggests significant communication between the ferrocenyl moieties. These redox processes experience a cathodic shift upon addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as a Lewis base. The six-membered ring is opened upon treatment with hot CHCl(3)/MeOH to form the methoxy species (pS)-1,2-NpFcB(OH)(OMe) (3), which can be converted back to the cycle 2 by dissolution in wet CHCl(3), followed by column chromatography on silica gel.

Efavirenz, (S)-6-chloro-4-(cyclopropylethynyl)-1,4-dihydro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-3 ,1-benzoxazin-2-one, is an anti HIV agent belonging to the class of the non-nucleoside inhibitors of the HIV-1 virus reverse transcriptase. A systematic quantum chemical study of the possible conformations, their relative stabilities and vibrational spectra of efavirenz has been reported. Structural and spectral characteristics of efavirenz have been studied by vibrational spectroscopy and quantum chemical methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for potential energy curve, optimized geometries and vibrational spectra have been carried out using 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets and B3LYP functionals. Based on these results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the crystalline structure of the most stable form of efavirenz. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The infrared and the Raman spectra of the molecule based on OFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The transition metal complexes of salicylhydrazone of anthranilhydrazide (H2L) were synthesised. The structures of metal complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic [IR, NMR, UV-Vis, EPR], thermal and other physicochemical methods. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of [Cu(HL)Cl]center dot H2O reveal its orthorhombic system with space group P2(1)2(1)2 and Z=4. The copper center has a distorted square planar geometry with ONO and Cl as the donor atoms. The ligand and its metal chelates have been screened for their antimicrobial and anti-tubercular activities using serial dilution method. Metal complexes in general have exhibited better antibacterial and antifungal activity than the free ligand and in few cases better than the standard used. Among the bacterial strains used, the complexes are highly potent against Gram-positive strains compared to Gram-negative. Anti-tubercular activity exhibited by the Co(II) complex is comparable with the standard used. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Ferrocene-conjugated reduced Schiff base (Fc-metH) copper(II) complexes of L-methionine and phenanthroline bases, namely, Cu(Fc-met)(B)](NO3), where B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), and 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-imidazo4,5-f]1,10]phenanthroline (nip in 4), were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). Complexes Cu(Ph-met)(B)](NO3) of the reduced Schiff base from benzaldehyde and L-methionine (Ph-metH) and B (phen in 5, dppz in 6) were prepared and used as control species. Complexes 1 and 5 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 as a discrete monomer has a CuN3OS core with the thiomethyl group as the axial ligand. Complex 5 has a polymeric structure with a CuN3O2 core in the solid state. Complexes 5 and 6 are formulated as Cu(Ph-met)(B)(H2O)] (NO3) in an aqueous phase based on the mass spectral data. Complexes 1-4 showed the Cu(II)-Cu(I) and Fc(+)-Fc redox couples at similar to 0.0 and similar to 0.5 V vs SCE, respectively, in DMF-0.1 M (Bu4N)-N-n](ClO4). A Cu(II)-based weak d-d band near 600 nm and a relatively strong ferrocenyl band at similar to 450 nm were observed in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer (1:4 v/v). The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA, exhibit moderate chemical nuclease activity forming (OH)-O-center dot radical species, and are efficient photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light of 454, 568, and 647 rim, forming (OH)-O-center dot radical as the reactive oxygen species. They are cytotoxic in HeLa (human cervical cancer) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells, showing an enhancement of cytotoxicity upon visible light irradiation. Significant change in the nuclear morphology of the HeLa cells was observed with 3 in visible light compared to the nonirradiated sample. Confocal imaging using 4 showed its nuclear localization within the HeLa cells.

A hydrothermal reaction of cobalt nitrate, 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA), 1,2,4-triazole, and NaOH gave rise to a deep purple colored compound Co-4(triazolate)(2)(OBA)(3)], I, possessing Co-4 clusters. The Co-4 clusters are connected together through the tirazolate moieties forming a two-dimensional layer that closely resembles the TiS2 layer. The layers are pillared by the OBA units forming the three-dimensional structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of a pillared TiS2 layer in a metal-organic framework compound. Magnetic studies in the temperature range 1.8-300 K indicate strong antiferromagetic interactions for Co-4 clusters. The structure as well as the magnetic behavior of the present compound has been compared with the previously reported related compound Co-2(mu 3-OH)(mu(2)-H2O)(pyrazine)(OBA)(OBAH)] prepared using pyrazine as the linker between the Co-4 clusters.

Divalent metal complexes of general formula M(2-nb)(2)(mc)(2)].2(2-nbH), where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2-nbH = 2-nitrobenzoic acid and mc = methyl carbazate (NH2NHCOOCH3), have been prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray study of the Cu(II) complex revealed that the molecule is centrosymmetric, with two N,O-chelating mc ligands in equatorial positions and a pair of monodentate 2-nb anions in the axial positions. The lattice 2-nbH molecules help to establish the packing of monomers through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermal stability and reactivity of the complexes were studied by TG-DTA. Emission studies show that these complexes are fluorescent.

The reaction of the benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L) with MoO2(acac)(2)] proceeds smoothly in refluxing ethanol to afford an orange complex MoO2L(C2H5OH)] (1). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation and isolation of two mononuclear MoO2L(Q)] {where Q = imidazole (2a) and 1-methylimidazole (2b)} and one dinuclear (MoO2L)(2)(Q)] {Q = 4,4'-bipyridine (3)} mixed-ligand oxomolybdenum complex. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic and spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis and NMR) measurements. The molecular structures of all the oxomolybdenum(VI) complexes (1, 2a, 2b and 3) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In each complex, the dianionic planar ligand is coordinated to the metal centre via one enolate oxygen, one phenolate oxygen and an azomethine nitrogen atom. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration of these complexes and their antibacterial activity indicates that compounds 2a and 2b are potential lead molecules for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Poly (beta-L-malic acid) (PMLA) is a biodegradable polymer and it has various important applications in the biomedical field. In the present work the structural and spectral characteristics of PMLA have been studied by methods of infrared. Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. Based on results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the structure of the PMLA. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. The reaction of a tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (2-(3-dimethylaminopropylimino)-methyl]-phenol) with Ni(II) acetate or perchlorate salts in the presence of azide as coligand has led to two new Ni(II) complexes of formulas Ni3L2(OAc)(2)(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (1) and Ni2L2(mu(1,1)-N-3) (mu(1,3)-N-3)](n)(2). Single crystal X-ray structures show that complex 1 is a linear trinuclear Ni(II) compound containing a mu(2)-phenwddo, an end-on (EO) azido and a syn-syn acetato bridge between the terminal and the central Ni(II) ions. Complex 2 can be viewed as a one-dimensional (1D) chain in which the triply bridged (di-mu(2)-phenoxido and EO azido) dimeric Ni-2 units are linked to each other in a zigzag pattern by a single end-to-end (EE) azido bridge. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate the presence of moderate ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1 with J value of 16.51(6) cm(-1). The magnetic behavior of 2 can be fitted in an alternating ferro- and antiferromagnetic model J(FM) = +34.2(2.8) cm(-1) and J(AF) = -21.6(1.1) cm(-1)] corresponding to the triple bridged dinuclear core and EE azido bridge respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to corroborate the magnetic results of 1 and 2. The contributions of the different bridges toward magnetic interactions in both compounds have also been calculated.
