This research is part of the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), which was initiated in 1998. In 1995-96, a baseline study on the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of proposed FKNMS management strategies and regulations of commercial fishers, dive operators and on selected environmental group members was conducted by researchers at the University of Florida and the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric and Marine Science (RSMAS). The baseline study was funded by the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program, and components of the study were published by Florida Sea Grant and in several peer reviewed journals. The study was accepted into the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program at a workshop to design the program in 1998, and workshop participants recommended that the study be replicated every ten years. The 10-year replication was conducted in 2004-05 (commercial fishers) 2006 (dive operators) and 2007 (environmental group members) by the same researchers at RSMAS, while the University of Florida researchers were replaced by Thomas J. Murray & Associates, Inc., which conducted the commercial fishing panels in the FKNMS. The 10-year replication study was funded by NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program. The study not only makes 10-year comparisons in the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of FKNMS management strategies and regulations, but it also establishes new baselines for future monitoring efforts. Things change, and following the principles of “adaptive management”, management has responded with changes in the management plan strategies and regulations. Some of the management strategies and regulations that were being proposed at the time of the baseline 1995-96 study were changed before the management plan and regulations went into effect in July 1997. This was especially true for the main focus of the study which was the various types of marine zones in the draft and final zoning action plan. Some of the zones proposed were changed significantly and subsequently new zones have been created. This study includes 10-year comparisons of socioeconomic/demographic profiles of each user group; sources and usefulness of information; knowledge of purposes of FKNMS zones; perceived beneficiaries of the FKNMS zones; views on FKNMS processes to develop management strategies and regulations; views on FKNMS zone outcomes; views on FKNMS performance; and general support for FKNMS. In addition to new baseline information on FKNMS zones, new baseline information was developed for spatial use, investment and costs-and-earnings for commercial fishers and dive operators, and views on resource conditions for all three user groups. Statistical tests were done to detect significant changes in both the distribution of responses to questions and changes in mean scores for items replicated over the 10-year period. Background: A new intervention aimed at managing patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) based on a specific set of communication techniques was developed, and tested in a cluster randomised clinical trial. Due to the modest results obtained and in order to improve our intervention we need to know the GPs' attitudes towards patients with MUS, their experience, expectations and the utility of the communication techniques we proposed and the feasibility of implementing them. Physicians who took part in 2 different training programs and in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) for patients with MUS were questioned to ascertain the reasons for the doctors' participation in the trial and the attitudes, experiences and expectations of GPs about the intervention. Methods: A qualitative study based on four focus groups with GPs who took part in a RCT. A content analysis was carried out. Results: Following the RCT patients are perceived as true suffering persons, and the relationship with them has improved in GPs of both groups. GPs mostly valued the fact that it is highly structured, that it made possible a more comfortable relationship and that it could be applied to a broad spectrum of patients with psychosocial problems. Nevertheless, all participants consider that change in patients is necessary; GPs in the intervention group remarked that that is extremely difficult to achieve. Conclusion: GPs positively evaluate the communication techniques and the interventions that help in understanding patient suffering, and express the enormous difficulties in handling change in patients. These findings provide information on the direction in which efforts for improving intervention should be directed.

In response to a growing body of research on projected climate change impacts to Washington State’s coastal areas, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Aquatic Resources Program (the Program) initiated a climate change preparedness effort in 2009 via the development of a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (the Strategy)i. The Strategy answers the question “What are the next steps that the Program can take to begin preparing for and adapting to climate change impacts in Washington’s coastal areas?” by considering how projected climate change impacts may effect: (1) Washington’s state-owned aquatic landsii, (2) the Program’s management activities, and (3) DNR’s statutorily established guidelines for managing Washington’s state-owned aquatic lands for the benefit of the public. The Program manages Washington’s state-owned aquatic lands according to the guidelines set forth in Revised Code of Washington 79-105-030, which stipulates that DNR must manage state-owned aquatic lands in a manner which provides a balance of the following public benefits: (1) Encouraging direct public uses and access; (2) Fostering water-dependent uses; (3) Ensuring environmental protection; (4) Utilizing renewable resources. (RCW 79-105-030) The law also stipulates that generating revenue in a manner consistent with these four benefits is a public benefit (RCW 79-105-030). Many of the next steps identified in the Strategy build off of recommendations provided by earlier climate change preparation and adaptation efforts in Washington State, most notably those provided by the Preparation and Adaptation Working Group, which were convened by Washington State Executive Order 70-02 in 2007, and those made in the Washington Climate Change Impacts Assessment (Climate Impacts Group, 2009). The foundation of Habermas's argument, a leading critical theorist, lies in the unequal distribution of wealth across society. He states that in an advanced capitalist society, the possibility of a crisis has shifted from the economic and political spheres to the legitimation system. Legitimation crises increase the more government intervenes into the economy (market) and the "simultaneous political enfranchisement of almost the entire adult population" (Holub, 1991, p. 88). The reason for this increase is because policymakers in advanced capitalist democracies are caught between conflicting imperatives: they are expected to serve the interests of their nation as a whole, but they must prop up an economic system that benefits the wealthy at the expense of most workers and the environment. Habermas argues that the driving force in history is an expectation, built into the nature of language, that norms, laws, and institutions will serve the interests of the entire population and not just those of a special group. In his view, policy makers in capitalist societies are having to fend off this expectation by simultaneously correcting some of the inequities of the market, denying that they have control over people's economic circumstances, and defending the market as an equitable allocator of income. (deHaven-Smith, 1988, p. 14). Critical theory suggests that this contradiction will be reflected in Everglades policy by communicative narratives that suppress and conceal tensions between environmental and economic priorities. Habermas’ Legitimation Crisis states that political actors use various symbols, ideologies, narratives, and language to engage the public and avoid a legitimation crisis. These influences not only manipulate the general population into desiring what has been manufactured for them, but also leave them feeling unfulfilled and alienated. Also known as false reconciliation, the public's view of society as rational, and "conductive to human freedom and happiness" is altered to become deeply irrational and an obstacle to the desired freedom and happiness (Finlayson, 2005, p. 5). These obstacles and irrationalities give rise to potential crises in the society. Government's increasing involvement in Everglades under advanced capitalism leads to Habermas's four crises: economic/environmental, rationality, legitimation, and motivation. These crises are occurring simultaneously, work in conjunction with each other, and arise when a principle of organization is challenged by increased production needs (deHaven-Smith, 1988). Habermas states that governments use narratives in an attempt to rationalize, legitimize, obscure, and conceal its actions under advanced capitalism. Although there have been many narratives told throughout the history of the Everglades (such as the Everglades was a wilderness that was valued as a wasteland in its natural state), the most recent narrative, “Everglades Restoration”, is the focus of this paper.(PDF contains 4 pages)

[EN] The objective of this study was to determine whether a short training program, using real foods, would decreased their portion-size estimation errors after training. 90 student volunteers (20.18±0.44 y old) of the University of the Basque Country (Spain) were trained in observational techniques and tested in food-weight estimation during and after a 3-hour training period. The program included 57 commonly consumed foods that represent a variety of forms (125 different shapes). Estimates of food weight were compared with actual weights. Effectiveness of training was determined by examining change in the absolute percentage error for all observers and over all foods over time. Data were analyzed using SPSS vs. 13.0. The portion-size errors decreased after training for most of the foods. Additionally, the accuracy of their estimates clearly varies by food group and forms. Amorphous was the food type estimated least accurately both before and after training. Our findings suggest that future dietitians can be trained to estimate quantities by direct observation across a wide range of foods. However this training may have been too brief for participants to fully assimilate the application.

Introdução - O exercício aeróbio é considerado uma ferramenta eficaz na redução de fatores de risco cardiometabólico e na melhora da qualidade de vida em adolescentes obesos. No entanto, os benefícios de um programa exclusivo com exercícios resistidos (ER) ainda não foram estabelecidos nesta população. Objetivo - Avaliar o efeito de um programa exclusivo com ER sobre a função endotelial, parâmetros hemodinâmicos e metabólicos, modulação autonômica, biomarcadores inflamatórios, composição corporal e condicionamento físico de adolescentes obesos. Materiais e Métodos - Quarenta adolescentes participaram do estudo e foram divididos em dois grupos de acordo com o nível de adiposidade: grupo controle (C, n = 20; 13 meninos e 7 meninas) e grupo obeso (Ob; n=24; 7 meninos e 17 meninas). O grupo Ob foi submetido a um programa de ER, três vezes por semana, durante três meses. A função endotelial, o perfil metabólico e hemodinâmico, a modulação autonômica, os biomarcadores inflamatórios, a composição corporal e o condicionamento físico foram avaliados antes e ao final da intervenção. Na investigação de nossa hipótese utilizamos: laser-Doppler fluxometria, análises bioquímicas e de células endoteliais circulantes, monitorização da pressão arterial ambulatorial, variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (Polar), densitometria com dupla emissão de raios X, análise de força muscular em aparelho isocinético e teste cardiopulmonar de exercício submáximo em cicloergômetro. Resultados - Após três meses de intervenção exclusiva com ER observamos uma melhora na vasodilatação endotélio-dependente (P<0,05) e uma redução na pressão arterial sistólica (P<0,01), diastólica (P<0,01) e média (P<0,01), independentes de alterações no peso corporal. Adicionalmente, também observamos redução na frequência cardíaca (FC) de repouso (P<0,01), aumento na variabilidade da FC (P<0,01) e na atividade parasimpática (P<0,05). Observamos também redução na circunferência da cintura (P<0,001), na relação cintura/quadril (P<0,001), no percentual de gordura total (P<0,01), troncular (P<0,01) e de distribuição andróide (P<0,01). Os níveis de fibrinogênio (P<0,05), endotelina-1(P<0,05) e de insulina (P<0,01), e o índice HOMA-IR (P<0,05) foram menores após intervenção. Após a intervenção proposta houve redução na incidência de síndrome metabólica (16,6 vs. 0%) nos adolescentes obesos. Além disso, os estes adolescentes aumentaram a força muscular (P<0,05) e reduziram o consumo de oxigênio, a produção de gás carbônico, a ventilação e o dispêndio energético (P <0,01) durante o teste cardiopulmonar de exercício submáximo. Conclusões - Um treinamento exclusivo com ER resultou em benefícios cardiovasculares, metabólicos e na composição corporal e condicionamento físico de adolescentes obesos, independente de alterações no peso corporal. Nossos resultados sugerem que a prática de ER foi capaz de reduzir fatores de risco cardiovascular em adolescentes com obesidade.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Small-Sided Games (SSG) vs. Interval Training (IT) in soccer training on aerobic fitness and physical enjoyment in youth elite soccer players during the last 8 weeks of the season. Seventeen U-16 male soccer players (age = 15.5 +/- 0.6 years, and 8.5 years of experience) of a Spanish First Division club academy were randomized to 2 different groups for 6 weeks: SSG group (n = 9) and IT group (n = 8). In addition to the usual technical and tactical sessions and competitive games, the SSG group performed 11 sessions with different SSGs, whereas the IT group performed the same number of sessions of IT. Players were tested before and after the 6-week training intervention with a continuous maximal multistage running field test and the counter movement jump test (CMJ). At the end of the study, players answered the physical activity enjoyment scale (PACES). During the study, heart rate (HR) and session perceived effort (sRPE) were assessed. SSGs were as effective as IT in maintaining the aerobic fitness in elite young soccer players during the last weeks of the season. Players in the SSG group declared a greater physical enjoyment than IT (P = 0.006; ES = 1.86 +/- 1.07). Coaches could use SSG training during the last weeks of the season as an option without fear of losing aerobic fitness while promoting high physical enjoyment.

A collaborative project in developing a broad-based coastal management training program in the Philippines is being undertaken by a group of government and nongovernment agencies. It addresses the lack of expertise in planning an implementation for coastal management in the country. The process will be documented to serve as a guide in starting and maintaining the process of collaborative training in coastal management in the region. Other training initiatives are outlined including regional and global efforts.

Purpose Encouraging office workers to 'sit less and move more' encompasses two public health priorities. However, there is little evidence on the effectiveness of workplace interventions for reducing sitting, even less about the longer term effects of such interventions and still less on dual-focused interventions. This study assessed the short and mid-term impacts of a workplace web-based intervention (Walk@WorkSpain, W@WS; 2010-11) on self-reported sitting time, step counts and physical risk factors (waist circumference, BMI, blood pressure) for chronic disease. Methods Employees at six Spanish university campuses (n=264; 42 +/- 10 years; 171 female) were randomly assigned by worksite and campus to an Intervention (used W@WS; n=129; 87 female) or a Comparison group (maintained normal behavior; n=135; 84 female). This phased, 19-week program aimed to decrease occupational sitting time through increased incidental movement and short walks. A linear mixed model assessed changes in outcome measures between the baseline, ramping (8 weeks), maintenance (11 weeks) and follow-up (two months) phases for Intervention versus Comparison groups. Results A significant 2 (group) x 2 (program phases) interaction was found for self-reported occupational sitting (F[3]=7.97, p=0.046), daily step counts (F[3]=15.68, p=0.0013) and waist circumference (F[3]=11.67, p=0.0086). The Intervention group decreased minutes of daily occupational sitting while also increasing step counts from baseline (446 +/- 126; 8,862 +/- 2,475) through ramping (+425 +/- 120; 9,345 +/- 2,435), maintenance (+422 +/- 123; 9,638 +/- 3,131) and follow-up (+414 +/- 129; 9,786 +/- 3,205). In the Comparison group, compared to baseline (404 +/- 106), sitting time remained unchanged through ramping and maintenance, but decreased at follow-up (-388 +/- 120), while step counts diminished across all phases. The Intervention group significantly reduced waist circumference by 2.1cms from baseline to follow-up while the Comparison group reduced waist circumference by 1.3cms over the same period. Conclusions W@WSis a feasible and effective evidence-based intervention that can be successfully deployed with sedentary employees to elicit sustained changes on "sitting less and moving more".

As melhorias funcionais após uma rotina regular de exercícios físicos nem sempre se traduzem em uma idêntica melhoria da condição aeróbica (AER). O objetivo foi identificar se uma rotina regular de exercícios é capaz de manter ou atenuar a queda do condicionamento aeróbico e funcional, bem como se a diferença nas melhorias nestas variáveis, em indivíduos idosos, pode ser explicada por variações em flexibilidade e força/potência muscular. No primeiro estudo, 176 jogadores profissionais de futebol foram divididos em tercis em relação à idade. Obtivemos o consumo de oxigênio (VO2) e frequência cardíaca (FC), além do perfil de flexibilidade global utilizando o Flexiteste (FLX). Dados de pré-temporada (2005-2011) dos tercis extremos (n=54), mais jovem (17-22 anos) e mais velhos (27-36 anos), foram comparados. Os efeitos do envelhecimento foram avaliados pela comparação do VO2, da FC e de regressões lineares de FLX versus valores previstos para a idade. Os resultados foram semelhantes para VO2max, 62,76,1 vs 63,26,2 mL.(kg.min)-1, (p=0,67), e para FLX, 435,9 vs 416,0, respectivamente (p=0,11), o tercil mais jovem apresentou valores mais altos de FCmáx, 1948,1 vs 1898,8 bpm, (p<0,01). Os jogadores não apresentaram a diminuição prevista no VO2max, enquanto FCmax e FLX diminuiram. No segundo estudo utilizou-se dados de 144 pacientes com idade de 6212 anos submetidos a testes de FLX, força/potência muscular e cardiopulmonar de exercício máximo em cicloergômetro de membros inferiores, após pelo menos 3 meses de participação em um programa de exercício supervisionado (PES). A correlação de Pearson foi calculada para avaliar as associações entre a diferença nas melhorias funcional e aeróbica (DEMFA) e as variações de FLX, força de preensão manual (FPM) e potência muscular (POT) e também entre os valores da primeira avaliação de AER e capacidade funcional (FUN) e as respectivas melhorias e o DEMFA. Após uma média de 32 meses de PES, houve aumento da FLX em 11,6% (p<0,01) e da POT em 14,7% (p<0,01), ajustadas para a idade, com preservação da FPM (p=0,47). Houve uma relação inversa entre os resultados da primeira avaliação e a melhoria AER (r=-0,28; p<0,01). Considerando os valores previstos, a AER aumentou menos do que a FUN - 21% versus 25% (p<0,01). A melhoria na FLX associou-se ao DEMFA (r=0,24; p<0,01). Assim, os estudos mostraram: a) ao manter uma rotina regular de exercícios, principalmente aeróbicos, o VO2 não reduz com a idade em futebolistas entre os 16 e 36 anos, apesar de uma redução na FCmax. b) a participação regular em um PES proporciona melhorias de componentes da aptidão física de pacientes promovendo a restauração dos resultados para equivalentes aos previstos para indivíduos saudáveis. c) uma melhoria da FLX contribui para uma maior melhoria da FUN do que da AER

Many short-term studies have reported groups of black crested gibbons containing >= 2 adult females (Nomascus concolor). We report the stability of multifemale groups in this species over a period of 6 yr. Our focal group and 2 neighboring groups included 2 breeding females between March 2003 and June 2009. We also habituated 1 multifemale group to observers and present detailed information concerning their social relationships over a 9-mo observation period. We investigated interindividual distances and agonistic behavior among the 5 group members. The spatial relationship between the 3 adult members (1 male, 2 females) formed an equilateral triangle. A subadult male was peripheral to the focal group, while a juvenile male maintained a closer spatial relationship with the adult members. We observed little agonistic behavior among the adult members. The close spatial relationship and lack of high rates of agonistic behavior among females suggest that the benefits of living in a multifemale group were equal to or greater than the costs for both females, given their ecological and social circumstances. The focal group occupied a large home range that was likely to provide sufficient food sources for the 2 females and their offspring. Between March 2003 and June 2009, 1 adult female gave 2 births and the other one gave 1 birth. All individuals in the focal group survived to June 2009. A long-term comparative study focused on females living in multifemale groups and females living in pair-living groups would provide insight into understanding the evolutionary mechanisms of the social system in gibbons.
