Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based high performance nano-biocomposites were prepared to be used in active food packaging. Pristine (CNC) and surfactant modified cellulose nanocrystals (s-CNC) with silver (Ag) nanoparticles were used as the matrix modifiers. Binary and ternary systems were prepared. Morphological investigations revealed the good distribution of silver nanoparticles in PLA ternary systems. The combination of s-CNC and Ag nanoparticles increased the barrier effect of the produced films while the results of overall migration for the PLA nano-biocomposites revealed that none of the samples exceeded the overall migration limit, since results were well below 60 mg kg1 of simulant.

The use of nanoparticle technology in consumer products has been increasing due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Specifically, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can demonstrate distinct physiochemical properties compared to bulk silver, including a large surface area to volume ratio that allows for higher reactivity with bacterial cell surfaces. AgNPs are being released into the environment, including soil ecosystems through various pathways such as points of production or during disposal of silver-containing products. This raises the concern about the potential impact on beneficial soil bacteria and their surrounding ecosystems. Members of the Rhizobiaceae family play important roles in nutrient cycling and contribute to overall soil fertility and the experiments in this thesis address the potential for AgNP-mediated toxicity on these plant-associating bacteria. Respiration analysis of Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Azospirillum brasilense, and Agrobacterium tumefaciens has revealed that AgNPs can negatively impact the growth and survival of these bacterial species, with B. japonicum being the most susceptible. Additionally, swimming motility assays using B. japonicum showed a significant decrease in colony diameter when treated with AgNPs (50 ppm). A significant decrease in root colonization of Triticum aestivum roots by A. brasilense was observed as AgNP treatment concentrations increased. Although some of the experiments could not be completed, taken together, these experiments and the research reported herein highlights the potential toxicological effects of AgNPs on bacterial species vital to the growth and health of agriculturally important crops.

Here, we report on the first application of high-pressure XPS (HP-XPS) to the surface catalyzed selective oxidation of a hydrocarbon over palladium, wherein the reactivity of metal and oxide surfaces in directing the oxidative dehydrogenation of crotyl alcohol (CrOH) to crotonaldehyde (CrHCO) is evaluated. Crotonaldehyde formation is disfavored over Pd(111) under all reaction conditions, with only crotyl alcohol decomposition observed. In contrast, 2D Pd5O4 and 3D PdO overlayers are able to selectively oxidize crotyl alcohol (1 mTorr) to crotonaldehyde in the presence of co-fed oxygen (140 mTorr) at temperatures as low as 40 C. However, 2D Pd5O4 ultrathin films are unstable toward reduction by the alcohol at ambient temperature, whereas the 3D PdO oxide is able to sustain catalytic crotonaldehyde production even up to 150 C. Co-fed oxygen is essential to stabilize palladium surface oxides toward in situ reduction by crotyl alcohol, with stability increasing with oxide film dimensionality.

The heterogeneously catalysed selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols is an important tool for the synthesis of valuable chemical intermediates and a hot topic within both academic and industrial arenas. In this mini-review, selected aspects of catalyst formulation, process operating conditions, and progress in identifying the active sites and surface reaction mechanisms notably through the application of synchrotron radiation, are highlighted. 2010 Society of Chemical Industry.

The extremely surface sensitive technique of metastable de-excitation spectroscopy (MDS) has been utilized to probe the bonding and reactivity of crotyl alcohol over Pd(111) and provide insight into the selective oxidation pathway to crotonaldehyde. Auger de-excitation (AD) of metastable He (23S) atoms reveals distinct features associated with the molecular orbitals of the adsorbed alcohol, corresponding to emission from the hydrocarbon skeleton, the O n nonbonding, and CC states. The O n and CC states of the alcohol are reversed when compared to those of the aldehyde. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the alcohol show that an adsorption mode with both CC and O bonds aligned somewhat parallel to the surface is energetically favored at a substrate temperature below 200 K. Density of states calculations for such configurations are in excellent agreement with experimental MDS measurements. MDS revealed oxidative dehydrogenation of crotyl alcohol to crotonaldehyde between 200 and 250 K, resulting in small peak shifts to higher binding energy. Intramolecular changes lead to the opposite assignment of the first two MOs in the alcohol versus the aldehyde, in accordance with DFT and UPS studies of the free molecules. Subsequent crotonaldehyde decarbonylation and associated propylidyne formation above 260 K could also be identified by MDS and complementary theoretical calculations as the origin of deactivation and selectivity loss. Combining MDS and DFT in this way represents a novel approach to elucidating surface catalyzed reaction pathways associated with a real-world practical chemical transformation, namely the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes.

The selective oxidation of crotyl alcohol has been explored over a Pd(111) model catalyst. At low temperatures, the alcohol adsorbs intact with the C=C bond parallel to the surface. Activation likely proceeds through an allyl alkoxide intermediate that follows two distinct reaction channels. Over the clean surface, 90% of the alcohol oxidizes to surface bound crotonaldehyde above 200 K, which subsequently all decarbonylates to propene and CO at room temperature. The minor reaction channel involves C-O scission to 2-butene and water. While some of these undesired reactively formed alkene products desorb around 300 K, the majority dehydrogenate to irreversibly bound carbon above 380 K. This latter decomposition pathway is unlikely to be important at the low temperatures utilized in liquid-phase crotyl alcohol oxidation over supported palladium catalysts. Adsorbed CO persists until 430 K and is likely responsible for site-blocking and deactivation of dispersed metallic Pd clusters. Coadsorbed oxygen suppresses crotonaldehyde decarbonylation and promotes its release from the surface. 2007 American Chemical Society.

2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Nanoparticles are being explored in many different applications due to the unique properties offered by quantum effects. To broaden the scope of these applications, the deposition of nanoparticles onto substrates in a simple and controlled way is highly desired. In this study, we use resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) for the deposition of metallic, silver nanoparticles for plasmonic applications. We find that RIR-MAPLE, a simple and versatile approach, is able to deposit silver nanoparticles as large as 80nm onto different substrates with good adhesion, regardless of substrate properties. In addition, the nanoparticle surface coverage of the substrates, which result from the random distribution of nanoparticles across the substrate per laser pulse, can be simply and precisely controlled by RIR-MAPLE. Polymer films of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) are also deposited by RIR-MAPLE on top of the deposited silver nanoparticles in order to demonstrate enhanced absorption due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect. The reported features of RIR-MAPLE nanoparticle deposition indicate that this tool can enable efficient processing of nanoparticle thin films for applications that require specific substrates or configurations that are not easily achieved using solution-based approaches.
