The third-harmonic optical susceptibility, chi((3))(3 omega; omega, omega, omega) of a silicate glass ceramic containing sodium niobate nanocrystals was measured for incident broadband light with central frequency omega corresponding to 1900nm. Absolute values of |chi((3))| and the dispersion of the refractive index from 600 to 1900nm were measured using the spectrally resolved femtosecond Maker fringes technique. The experiments show that |chi((3))| is 1 order of magnitude larger than silica, and it grows by similar to 50% when the volume fraction occupied by the nanocrystals increases up to 40%. P>Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and its hydration product bicarbonate (HCO(3)-) are essential molecules in various physiological processes of all living organisms. The reversible interconversion between CO(2) and HCO(3)- is in equilibrium. This reaction is slow without catalyst, but can be rapidly facilitated by Zn2+-metalloenzymes named carbonic anhydrases (CAs). To gain an insight into the function of multiple clades of fungal CA, we chose to investigate the filamentous fungi Aspergillus fumigatus and A. nidulans. We identified four and two CAs in A. fumigatus and A. nidulans, respectively, named cafA-D and canA-B. The cafA and cafB genes are constitutively, strongly expressed whereas cafC and cafD genes are weakly expressed but CO(2)-inducible. Heterologous expression of the A. fumigatus cafB, and A. nidulans canA and canB genes completely rescued the high CO(2)-requiring phenotype of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae Delta nce103 mutant. Only the Delta cafA Delta cafB and Delta canB deletion mutants were unable to grow at 0.033% CO(2), of which growth defects can be restored by high CO(2). Defects in the CAs can affect Aspergilli conidiation. Furthermore, A. fumigatus Delta cafA, Delta cafB, Delta cafC, Delta cafD and Delta cafA Delta cafB mutant strains are fully virulent in a low-dose murine infection.

A 4-cycle in a tripartite graph with vertex partition {V-1, V-2, V-3} is said to be gregarious if it has at least one vertex in each V-i, 1 less than or equal to i less than or equal to 3. In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of an edge-disjoint decomposition of any complete tripartite graph into gregarious 4-cycles.

Over the last decade, ambitious claims have been made in the management literature about the contribution of emotional intelligence to success and performance. Writers in this genre have predicted that individuals with high emotional intelligence perform better in all aspects of management. This paper outlines the development of a new emotional intelligence measure, the Workgroup Emotional Intelligence Profile, Version 3 (WEIP-3), which was designed specifically to profile the emotional intelligence of individuals in work teams. We applied the scale in a study of the link between emotional intelligence and two measures of team performance: team process effectiveness and team goal focus. The results suggest that the average level of emotional intelligence of team members, as measured by the WEIP-3, is reflected in the initial performance of teams. In our study, low emotional intelligence teams initially performed at a lower level than the high emotional intelligence teams. Over time, however, teams with low average emotional intelligence raised their performance to match that of teams with high emotional intelligence.

A gas product analysis has been conducted on gamma-irradiated samples of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) by means of gas chromatography. The major volatile products have been identified to be CO, CO2, CH4 and C2H6 for PLA, and CO and CO2 for PGA. In addition, the yield of evolved gases for PLA has been found to be 1.81 for CO2, 0.98 for CO, 0.026 for CH4 and 0.012 for C2H6; and that for PGA to be 1.70 for CO2 and 0.42 for CO. The new chain ends formed due to gamma-induced bond cleavage in PLA have been assigned to CH3-CH2-CO-O- and CH3-CH2-O-CO-, and the G values for formation of these chain ends were found to be 1.9 and 0.6, respectively. The G value for chain scission reported previously of 2.3 is comparable with that for the formation of the propanoic acid end group. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.

A sensitive near-resonant four-wave mixing technique based on two-photon parametric four-wave mixing has been developed. Seeded parametric four-wave mixing requires only a single laser as an additional phase matched seeder field is generated via parametric four-wave mixing of the pump beam in a high gain cell. The seeder field travels collinearly with the pump beam providing efficient nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a second medium. This simple arrangement facilitates the detection of complex molecular spectra by simply scanning the pump laser. Seeded parametric four-wave mixing is demonstrated in both a low pressure cell and an air/acetylene flame with detection of the two-photon C (2) Pi(upsilon'=0)<--X (2) Pi(upsilon =0) spectrum of nitric oxide. From the cell data a detection limit of 10(12) molecules/cm(3) is established. A theoretical model of seeded parametric four-wave mixing is developed from existing parametric four-wave mixing theory. The addition of the seeder field significantly modifies the parametric four-wave mixing behaviour such that in the small signal regime, the signal intensity can readily be made to scale as the cube of the laser pump power while the density dependence follows a more familiar square law dependence, In general, we find excellent agreement between theory and experiment. Limitations to the process result from an ac Stark shift of the two-photon resonance in the high pressure seeder cell caused by the generation of a strong seeder field, as well as a reduction in phase matching efficiency due to the presence of certain buffer species. Various optimizations are suggested which should overcome these limitations, providing even greater detection sensitivity. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics, [S0021-9606(98)01014-9].

The complexes [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](2), [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](3) and [Fe([9]aneNS(2))(2)][ClO4](2) ([9]aneN(2)S = 1-thia-4. 7-diazacyclononane and [9]aneNS(2) = 1,4-dithia-7-azacyclononane) have been prepared and the latter two characterised by X-ray crystallography. The Mossbauer spectra (isomer shift/mm s(-1), quadrupole splitting/mm s(-1), 4.2 K) for [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](2) (0.52, 0.57), [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](3) (0.25, 2.72) and [Fe([9]aneNS(2))(2)][ClO4](2) (0.43, 0.28) are typical for iron(II) and iron(III) complexes. Variable-temperature susceptibility measurements for [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](2) (2-300 K) revealed temperature-dependent behaviour in both the solid state [2.95 mu(B) (300 K)-0.5 mu(B) (4.2 K)] and solution (Delta H degrees 20-22 kJ mol(-1), Delta S degrees 53-60 J mol(-1) K-1). For [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](3) in the solid state [2.3 mu(B) (300 K)-1.9 mu(B) (4.2 K)] the magnetic data were fit to a simple model (H = -lambda L . S + mu L-z) to give the spin-orbit coupling constant (lambda) of -260 +/- 10 cm(-1). The solid-state X-band EPR spectrum of [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](3) revealed axial symmetry (g(perpendicular to) = 2.607, g(parallel to) = 1.599). Resolution of g(perpendicular to) into two components at Q-band frequencies indicated a rhombic distortion. The low-temperature single-crystal absorption spectra of [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](2) and [Fe([9]aneNS(2))(2)][ClO4](2) exhibited additional bands which resembled pseudotetragonal low-symmetry splitting of the parent octahedral (1)A(1g) --> T-1(2g) and (1)A(1g) ---> T-1(1g) transitions. However, the magnitude of these splittings was too large, requiring 10Dq for the thioether donors to be significantly larger than for the amine donors. Instead, these bands were tentatively assigned to weak, low-energy S --> Fe-II charge-transfer transitions. Above 200 K, thermal occupation of the high-spin T-5(2g) ground state resulted in observation of the T-5(2g) --> E-5(g) transition in the crystal spectrum of [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](2). From a temperature-dependence study, the separation of the low-spin (1)A(1g) and high-spin T-5(2g) ground states was approximately 1700 cm(-1). The spectrum of the iron(III) complex [Fe([9]aneN(2)S)(2)][ClO4](3) is consistent with a low-spin d(5) configuration.

Cellular Prion Protein (PrP(C)) is a cell surface protein highly expressed in the nervous system, and to a lesser extent in other tissues. PrP(C) binds to the extracellular matrix laminin and vitronectin, to mediate cell adhesion and differentiation. Herein, we investigate how PrP(C) expression modulates the aggressiveness of transformed cells. Mesenchymal embryonic cells (MEC) from wildtype (Prnp(+/+)) and PrP(C)-null (Prnp(0/0)) mice were immortalized and transformed by co-expression of ras and myc. These cells presented similar growth rates and tumor formation in vivo. When injected in the tail vein, PrnP(0/0)raS/myc cells exhibited increased lung colonization compared with Prnp(+/+)ras/myc cells. Additionally, Prnp(0/0)ras/myc cells form more aggregates with blood components than Prnp(+/+)ras/myc cells, facilitating the arrest of Prnp(0/0)ras/myc cells in the lung vasculature. Integrin alpha(v)beta(3) is more expressed and activated in MEC and in transformed Prnp(0/0) cells than in the respective Prnp(+/+) cells. The blocking of integrin alpha(v)beta(3) by RGD peptide reduces lung colonization in transformed Prnp(0/0) cells to similar levels of those presented by transformed Prnp(+/+) cells. Our data indicate that PrP(C) negatively modulates the expression and activation of integrin alpha(v)beta(3) resulting in a more aggressive phenotype. These results indicate that PrP(C) may have main implications in modulating metastasis formation. (C) 2009 UICC

Background: Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is a hereditary disorder with multiple colorectal polyps that exhibit an almost inevitable risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in untreated patients. Goals: To evaluate clinical features related to CRC risk at diagnosis. Material and methods: Charts from 88 patients were reviewed to collect information regarding age, family history, symptoms, polyposis severity and association with CRC. Results: 41 men (46.6%) and 47 women (53.4%) were assisted. CRC was detected in 53 patients (60.2%), with a frequency of 9.1% under 20 years, 58% between 21-40 and 85% over 41 years of age. Average age of patients without CRC was lower at treatment (29.5 vs. 40.0 years; p=0.001). Family history was reported by 58 patients (65.9%), whose average age did not differ from those who didn`t report it (33.4 vs. 34.4; p=0.17). Asymptomatic patients comprised 10.2% of the total; in this group, CRC incidence was much lower when compared to those presenting symptoms (1.1% vs. 65.8%; p=0.001). Patients without CRC presented a shorter length of symptoms (15.2 vs. 26.4 months; p=0.03) and less frequent weight loss (11.4% vs. 33.9%; p=0.01). At colonoscopy, polyposis was classified as attenuated in 12 patients (14.3%), who presented greater average age (48.2 vs. 33.3 years; p=0.02) and equal CRC incidence (58.3% vs. 58.3%; p=0.6) when compared to those with classic polyposis. Conclusions: The risk of CRC in FAP patients 1) increases significantly after the second decade; 2) is associated with higher age, weight loss, presence and duration of simptomatology; 3) is similar in patients with attenuated or classic phenotype. Background: Recurrent 15q13.3 microdeletions were recently identified with identical proximal (BP4) and distal (BP5) breakpoints and associated with mild to moderate mental retardation and epilepsy. Methods: To assess further the clinical implications of this novel 15q13.3 microdeletion syndrome, 18 new probands with a deletion were molecularly and clinically characterised. In addition, we evaluated the characteristics of a family with a more proximal deletion between BP3 and BP4. Finally, four patients with a duplication in the BP3-BP4-BP5 region were included in this study to ascertain the clinical significance of duplications in this region. Results: The 15q13.3 microdeletion in our series was associated with a highly variable intra-and inter-familial phenotype. At least 11 of the 18 deletions identified were inherited. Moreover, 7 of 10 siblings from four different families also had this deletion: one had a mild developmental delay, four had only learning problems during childhood, but functioned well in daily life as adults, whereas the other two had no learning problems at all. In contrast to previous findings, seizures were not a common feature in our series (only 2 of 17 living probands). Three patients with deletions had cardiac defects and deletion of the KLF13 gene, located in the critical region, may contribute to these abnormalities. The limited data from the single family with the more proximal BP3-BP4 deletion suggest this deletion may have little clinical significance. Patients with duplications of the BP3-BP4-BP5 region did not share a recognisable phenotype, but psychiatric disease was noted in 2 of 4 patients. Conclusions: Overall, our findings broaden the phenotypic spectrum associated with 15q13.3 deletions and suggest that, in some individuals, deletion of 15q13.3 is not sufficient to cause disease. The existence of microdeletion syndromes, associated with an unpredictable and variable phenotypic outcome, will pose the clinician with diagnostic difficulties and challenge the commonly used paradigm in the diagnostic setting that aberrations inherited from a phenotypically normal parent are usually without clinical consequences.

It is well established that object relatives (1) are harder to process than subject relatives (2). Passivization, other things being equal, increases sentence complexity. However, one of the functions of the passive construction is to promote an NP into the role of subject so that it can be more easily bound to the head NP in a higher clause. Thus, (3) is predicted to be marginally preferred over (1). Passiviazation in this instance may be seen as a way of avoiding the object relative construction. 1. The pipe that the traveller smoked annoyed the passengers. 2. The traveller that smoked the pipe annoyed the passengers. 3.The pipe that was smoked by the traveller annoyed the 4.The traveller that the pipe was smoked by annoyed the 5.The traveller that the lady was assaulted by annoyed the In (4) we have relativization of an NP which has been demoted by passivization to the status of a by-phrase. Such relative clauses may only be obtained under quite restrictive pragmatic conditions. Many languages do not permit relativization of a constituent as low as a by-phrase on the NP accessibility hierarchy (Comrie, 1984). The factors which determine the acceptability of demoted NP relatives like (4-5) reflect the ease with which the NP promoted to subject position can be taken as a discourse topic. We explored the acceptability of sentences such as (1-5) using pair-wise judgements of samddifferent meaning, accompanied by ratings of easeof understanding. Results are discussed with reference to Gibsons DLT model of linguistic complexity and sentence processing (Gibson, 2000)

The basic biology of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors and their splice variants is first reviewed, followed by a review of the known roles of FGFs in the inner ear. They include induction of the otocyst by FGF19, followed by FGF3 in further development of the otocyst. In later development, FGF3 or FGF10 acting on FGF receptor 2b is likely to be involved in development of the walls of the cochlear spaces, while FGF receptor 3 is involved in differentiation of the pillar cells of the organ of Corti. FGF1 and FGF2 act as trophic factors for the developing cochlear nerve fibres. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Experimental infections were used to track the fate of the dorsal sensilla of Merizocotyle icopae (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from nasal tissue of the shovelnose ray, Rhinobatos typus (Rhinobatidae). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that 3 types of uniciliate dorsal sensilla exist at different times in the development of the monogenean. Type 1 sensilla have little or no invagination where the cilium exits the distal end of the dendrite and possess a ring of epidermis surrounding the cilium distal to the invagination. Type 2 sensilla have a deep invagination where the cilium exits the dendrite. Type 3 sensilla can be distinguished from the other types by the shape of the dendrite. The larvae have predominantly Type I dorsal sensilla, most of which are lost approximately 24 h after infection and a few Type 2 sensilla, which are retained. Additional Type 2 sensilla (termed Adult Type 2 sensilla), which are slightly different morphologically from the Type 2 sensilla of the larvae, form in later stages of development. Numerous Type 3 sensilla are unique to the dorsal surface of adults. Loss of all Type I sensilla upon attachment to the host, R. typus, suggests that these may be chemo- or mechanoreceptors responsible for host location by the swimming infective larvae. Type 2 sensilla appear to be important in the larvae, juveniles, and adults whereas the modality mediated by Type 3 is specific to adults. (C) 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Published mobility measurements obtained by capillary zone electrophoresis of human growth hormone peptides are described reasonably well by the classical theoretical relationships for electrophoretic migration. This conformity between theory and experiment has rendered possible a more critical assessment of a commonly employed empirical relationship between mobility (u), net charge (z) and molecular mass (M) of peptides in capillary electrophoresis. The assumed linear dependence between u and z/M-2/3 is shown to be an approximate description of a shallow curvilinear dependence convex to the abscissa. An improved procedure for the calculation of peptide charge (valence) is also described. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
