The effect of rare-earth ion Eu3+ on hemoglobin (Hb) was studied by using two-dimensional Raman correlation spectroscopy. The results show that with the variation of Eu3+ concentrations as perturbation, the oxidation state of Hb and its spin state are both sensitive to the perturbation. Eu3+ added to Hb affects the oxidation and spin state synchronously. The four structure-sensitive bands of Hb are more accessible to the Eu3+ than other bands.

Nanocrystalline YVO4:A (A = Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 400 degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the increase of annealing temperatures. Transparent nonpatterned phosphor films were uniform and crack-free, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 90 nm. Patterned gel and crystalline phosphor film bands with different widths (5-60 mum) were obtained. Significant shrinkage and a few defects were observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped rare earth ions (A) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline YVO4 phosphor films because of an efficient energy transfer from vanadate groups to them. The Sm3+ and Er3+ ions also showed upconversion luminescence in a YVO4 film host. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the rare earth ions increased with increasing annealing temperature from 400 to 800 degreesC, and the optimum concentration for Eu3+ was determined to be 7 mol % and those for Dy3+, Sm3-, and Er3+ were 2 Mol % of Y3- in YVO4 films, respectively.

Oxyapatite NaY9Si6O26 was prepared by sol-gel method. By choosing the precursors, a single phase compound was obtained. This soft chemical method lowered the reaction temperature by 100degreesC compared with the solid state method. Its morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Several rare earth ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) and Pb2+ ion were doped in this compound. The high resolution emission spectrum of Eu3+ showed that rare earth ions occupied two yttrium sites. In spite of the charge imbalance of Pb2+ with the cations in this compound, it was found that Pb2+ could emit in UV range and transfer its excitation energy to Dy3+ ion.

CaY1-xBO4: xEu was synthesied by solid state reaction method, and the displacement and luminescence of the Eu3+ in CaYBO4 host were studied. Two luminescent centers could be observed at certain Eu3+-concentration, indicating that the Eu3+ occupies two different crystallographic sites. This result shows that the Eu3+ occupies two different Y3+ sites in CaYBO4. The investigation on Eu-O charge transfer bands indicates that the larger distortion or the lower symmetry of Eu3+ site is,the shorter wavelength of the Eu-O charge transfer band is. When the Eu3+-concentration is high (x > 0.10), Eu3+ occupies the sites of Ca2+ and is reduced to Eu2+.

Sol-gel derived luminescent thin films doped with rare earth (RE) complexes were prepared using an in-situ synthesis method with a two-step hydrolysis process and the luminescence spectra were measured. Fluorescence Lifetime and thermal stability were investigated. The results show that a broad excitation band indicates the formation of RE complexes in the solid thin films. RE ions, which are restrained in a silica matrix, present longer lifetime and higher thermal stability than that in DMF/PVB films containing the corresponding pure complexes. The variations of emission intensities of SrB4O7:Eu2+ and Sr2B5O9Cl:Eu2+ prepared in different atmospheres are discussed in view of the structure of host compounds. A model of substitution defects is proposed to explain the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres of N-2, air and O-2. Experiment results show that SrB4O7:Eu2+ phosphor sample prepared in N-2 atmosphere has an emission intensity of 94% as high as that of the sample prepared in H-2 gas. This implies that the reduction of Eu2+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres could be potentially used in preparing phosphors, such as SrB4O7:Eu2+. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Eu3+-activated calcium silicate (CaO-SiO2:Eu3+) luminescent films were prepared by the sol-gel method. The structural evolution of the film was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the luminescence properties of the phosphor films were investigated as a function of heat treatment temperature. The XRD study indicates that a kilchoanite phase forms in the film sintered at 800 degreesC, which is different from that in gel powder treated under the same conditions. The SEM results show that the film thickness decreases and the particles in the film become smaller with increasing heat treatment temperature. The CaO-SiO2:Eu film shows the characteristic emission of Eu3+ under UV excitation, with the Eu3+ D-5(0)-->F-7(2) band (616 nm) being the most prominent. A large difference in the Eu3+ lifetime is observed between the film samples treated at 500 and 700 degreesC (or above). Concentration quenching occurs when the Eu3+ doping concentration is above 6 mol% of Ca2+ in the film.

The luminescent properties of Gd3PO7:Eu were investigated in W and VUV regions. This phosphor has such strong emissions around 618.5 nn under UV excitation, especially around 209nn, that it has a better colour saturation than that of Y2O3:Eu. It could be a new potential red phosphor for lamp and other applications with W-excitation source or even for displaying devices. In the VUV excitation spectrum of Eu3+ emissions, energy absorptions by Gd3+, Gd-O and PO43- have been observed, on which it can be inferred that there are three kinds of energy transferring processes to Eu-3(+) ions. The energy absorptions of Gd3+, Gd-O and PO43- are induced by 4f --> 4f transitions, a bandgap transition of Gd3PO7 and intramolecular (2t(2) --> 2a, 3t(2)) transition, respectively. The energy transfer efficiency of the PO43- intramolecular transition is lower compared with that of the bandgap transition (Gd-O).

Phorsphors of BaY2F8 : Ce3+, BaY2F8: EU2+ and BaY2F8 : Ce, Eu were prepared by higher temperature solid reaction and their excitation, emission and diffuse reflection spectra were made. We firstly found that the competition of energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ and electron transfer from Ce3+ to EU3+ existed in CeF3 and EuF3-co-doped BaY2F8 systems. The f-f transition emission of EU2+ was increased with increasing x in systems BaY2F8 : 0. 03Ce, xEU. Ce4+ ions coexist, with Ce3+ ions and substitute Y3+ for Ce4+ in the systems BaY2F8 : Eu, Cc.

Nanosized ZnS doped with different concentrations of Eu3+ were prepared and analyzed by x-ray diffraction technique. The experimental results show that ZnS belongs to the cubic structure. From the photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra, it can be seen that the ratio of the emission intensity of Eu3+ 616 nm to that at 590 nm increases as the increasing of Eu3+. This phenomenon reveals that the site symmetry of Eu3+ reduces as the increasing of Eu3+.

Petroleum sulfoxide-NH4SCN extraction chromatography was developed for the separation of Y from other rare earth elements. Some chromatographic parameters were chosen and separation factors between Y and other rare earth elements were determined. A column of resin coated with petroleum sulfoxide was used. The Y in the sample was eluted with NH4SCN, then titrated with EDTA. The recovery was 67%-120% and relative standard deviation +/-4.0%-19.4%. This method can be applied to the determination of trace amounts of rare earth impurities in Y2O3 with a purity of 99.999 9%-99. 999 99%.

Because of the extremely sensitivity to the local environment of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ion, the fluorescence of Eu3+ ions was Studied by introducing Eu3+ ions to TiO2 gel by the sol-gel method, from which the structural changes of TiO2 gel were characterized. The results showed that the intensity of D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition increased with the increasement of heat treatment temperature, which indicated the evaporation of molecular water and the completeness of the condensation reaction. Because of the quenching of the fluorescence induced by the cluster of Eu3+ ions, the addition of Al3+ ions greatly enhanced the emission intensity of Eu3+ ion.

The vibrational spectrum of the CaAl2B2O7 was investigated. It was shown that the vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the region of 1400 similar to 600 cm(-1), and the bands at 519 nm(-1) may originate from the AlO6 vibration. The luminescence properties of Eu3+ in CaAl2B2O7 were investigated. It was found that the Eu3+ ion in CaAl2B2O7 occupies two different sites. Investigation on the phonon sideband of Eu3+ indicates that BO3 groups are present in the:surroundings of Eu3+ ions.

This paper reports a new observation of the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in Sr2B5O9Cl when prepared in air at high temperature. A model based on the nature of substitution defects is proposed to explain this abnormal reduction. Electrons, which reduced the Eu3+ ions, are created by the substitution of cations first and then transferred to the target Eu3+ ions via tetrahedral berate anion groups. Codoping experiments are designed and performed. The results of these experiments support the model proposed. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

The TiO2 gel doped with UO22+ and Eu3+ has been prepared by a sol-gel method. The quenching of the UO22+ emission by Eu3+ and the energy transfer from the excited state of UO22+ to the ground state oh Eu3+ have been investigated. The energy transfer has been studied by the measurement of luminescence lifetime tau, calculations of energy transfer efficiency eta(ET) and energy transfer rate W-ET The experimental results indicated that the quenching is combined static and dynamic mechanism, but the static mechanism is dominant.
