Interoperability and Technology for a Language Resources Factory

This document describes some of the technological aspects of a project devoted to the creation of a factory for language resources. The project’s objectives are explained, as well as the idea to create a distributed infrastructure of web services. This document focuses on two main topics of the factory: (1) the technological approaches chosen to develop the factory, i.e. software, protocols, servers, etc. (2) and Interoperability as the main challenge is to permit different NLP tools work together in the factory. This document explains why XCES and GrAF are chosen as the main formats used for the linguistic data exchange.

My paper analysed the origins of the Irish language, where it came from, whay kind of people the Celts were and why the language is in such a critical state. I analized the Irish history and also the new improvements by the Government to reinforce the use of the language

Apertium Advanced Web Interface : A first step towards interactivity and language tools convergence

This documents sums up a projectaimed at building a new web interfaceto the Apertium machine translationplatform, including pre-editing andpost-editing environments. It containsa description of the accomplished workon this project, as well as an overviewof possible evolutions.

XML-verkkotietokantojen suorituskykyvertailu

XML:n kasvava suosio dokumenttiformaattina sekä sen alati monipuolistuva käyttö ovat lisänneet XML-tiedonhallintajärjestelmien tarvetta. Yksi tapa XML-dokumenttien hallintaan on edelleen tiedostopohjainen järjestelmä. Erilaisiin tietokantoihin perustuvat XML-tiedonhallintajärjestelmät ovat kuitenkin viime vuosina kasvattaneetsuosiotaan monipuolisempien ominaisuuksien ja paremman suorituskyvyn takia. Lisäksi XML-dokumenttien hallinta tiedostopohjaisessa järjestelmässä käy lähes mahdottomaksi suurilla datamäärillä. Suhteellisen uutena tulokkaana XML-dokumenttienhallintaan ovat tulleet natiivit XML -tietokannat, jotka ovat suunniteltu juuriXML:ää silmälläpitäen. Tässä diplomityössä esitellään erilaisia XML-tiedonhallintajärjestelmiä. Erityisesti relaatiotietokantoihin ja natiiveihin XML -tietokantoihin perustuvien ratkaisujen taustoihin ja teknisiin yksityiskohtiin yritetään luoda syvällinen katsaus. Neljälle XML-tiedonhallintaratkaisulle - Binary Approachille, Edge Approachille, eXistille ja Xindicelle - suoritetaan XMach-1 suorituskykytesti. Lisäksi testattavien ratkaisujen teknistä toimivuutta arvioidaan sekä analyyttisen että käytännön tarkastelun kautta. Suorituskykytestien ja teknisen toimivuuden arvioiden perusteella on tarkoitus valita XML-tiedonhallintaratkaisu Javalla toteutetulle Web-sovellukselle, joka käyttää XML:ää tietojen tallennusformaattina.

XML-based information management environment for PE technologies

Printed electronics is an emerging concept in electronics manufacturing and it is in very early development stage. The technology is not stable, design kits are not developed, and flows and Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools are not fixed yet. The European project TDK4PE addresses all this issues and this PFC has been realized on this context. The goal is to develop an XML-based information system for the collection and management of information from the technology and cell libraries developed in TDK4PE. This system will ease the treatment of that information for a later generation of specific Design Kits (DK) and the corresponding documentation. This work proposes a web application to generate technology files and design kits in a formatted way; it also proposes a structure for them and a database implementation for storing the needed information. The application will allow its users to redefine the structure of those files, as well as export and import XML files, between other formats.

Mielipidekyselyjärjestelmän suunnittelu ja toteutus

Tämän työn tavoitteena on suunnitella yksinkertainen Internet-pohjainen mielipidekyselyjärjestelmä sekä esitellä yksityiskohtaisesti järjestelmän toteutus ja siihen liittyvät menetelmät. Menetelmistäesitellään ainoastaan ennalta valitut menetelmät järjestelmän toteutukseen, tietojen esittämiseen, esitystavan muotoiluun sekä tietojen varastointiin. Järjestelmä toteutetaan HTML- ja PHP-kielillä sekä käyttämällä CSS-menetelmän tyylimuotoiluja ja XML-kielen muotoiluun perustuvia tiedostoja tietovarastoina. Järjestelmän suunnitteluun liittyen työssä pyritään kuvaamaan järjestelmään toteutettavat kaksi erillistä käyttöliittymää, pääkäyttäjän käyttöliittymä ja normaalin käyttäjän käyttöliittymä, sekä näihin toteutettavat toiminnot. Pääkäyttäjän tärkeimmät toiminnot ovat mielipidekyselyiden luominen, käyttäjien lisääminen kyselyihin sekä kyselyiden tulosten seuranta. Normaalin käyttäjän toiminnot taas rajoittuvat kirjautumiseen ja kyselyyn vastaamiseen. Järjestelmän toteutuksen kuvauksessa kuvataan tarkasti edellä mainittujen kahden käyttöliittymän toiminnot sekä näiden toimintojen toteutustavat. Lisäksi toteutuksen kuvauksen yhteydessä määritellään tarkasti järjestelmän tietovarastoina toimivien tiedostojen sisällön muoto. Työn lopputuloksena syntyi valituilla toteutustavoilla toteutettu toimiva mielipidekyselyjärjestelmä sekä tämä järjestelmän suunnitteluun ja toteutuksen selvittämiseen keskittynyt dokumentti. Toteutetusta järjestelmästä ei tullut täydellinen vaan jatkokehityksessä voidaan harkita esimerkiksi tietokannan käyttämistä järjestelmän tietovarastoina sekä joidenkin lisäominaisuuksien toteuttamista. Tavoitteeseen päästiin kuitenkin, sillä toteutettu järjestelmä on toimiva ja käyttötarkoitukseensa sopiva.

Non-native English-speaking English language teachers: history and research

Although the majority of English language teachers worldwide are non-native English speakers, no research was conducted on these teachers until recently. After the pioneering work of Robert Phillipson in 1992 and Peter Medgyes in 1994, nearly a decade had to elapse for more research to emerge on the issues relating to non-native English teachers. The publication in 1999 of George Braine's book Nonnative educators in English language teaching appears to have encouraged a number of graduate students and scholars to research this issue, with topics ranging from teachers' perceptions of their own identity to students' views and aspects of teacher education. This article compiles, classifies, and examines research conducted in the last two decades on this topic, placing a special emphasis on World Englishes concerns, methods of investigation, and areas in need of further attention.

Liiketoimintasovelluksen integraatioratkaisu J2EE:n ja XML:n avulla

Työssä esitellään sovellusintegraation osia ja merkitystä sähköisessä liiketoiminnassa sekä toteutetaan toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän tietoja yrityksen asiakkaalle välittävä palvelu. Yritykset yhdistävät järjestelmänsä asiakkaiden ja liiketoimintakumppanien kanssa integroimalla. Työn teoriaosassa määritellään verkkoliiketoiminta, integraatioratkaisun osa-alueet ja integroinnin merkitys yrityksen kannalta sekä esitellään integrointiin käytettäviä perusteknologioita. Soveltavassa osassa toteutetaan paperiteollisuusyrityksen tilaus- ja toimitustietoja XML:n avulla lähettävä Java-pohjainen järjestelmä. Työssä tarkastellaan integraation merkitystä perusteknologian yrityksille ja integraation käytännön toteutusta. Tarkastelun tuloksena todetaan, että liiketoimintajärjestelmien integrointi on välttämätöntä yritysten kannattavuuden ja tehokkuuden kannalta. Integraatioprosessi on monimutkainen, joten sen toteutus vaatii tarkkaa suunnittelua, hallintaa ja aikaa.

Simulation Supported Robot Programming using XML

The main objective of this master's thesis is to study robot programming using simulation software, and also how to embed the simulation software into company's own robot controlling software. The further goal is to study a new communication interface to the assembly line's components -more precisely how to connect the robot cell into this new communication system. Conveyor lines are already available where the conveyors use the new communication standard. The robot cell is not yet capable of communicating with to other devices using the new communication protocols. The main problem among robot manufacturers is that they all have their own communication systems and programming languages. There has not been any common programming language to program all the different robot manufacturers robots, until the RRS (Realistic Robot Simulation) standards were developed. The RRS - II makes it possible to create the robot programs in the simulation software and it gives a common user interface for different robot manufacturers robots. This thesis will present the RRS - II standard and the robot manufacturers situation for the RRS - II support. Thesis presents how the simulation software can be embedded into company's own robot controlling software and also how the robot cell can be connected to the CAMX (Computer Aided Manufacturing using XML) communication system.

Heterogeenisen palveluverkon kuvaus ja käyttö XML-kielen avulla

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on käydä läpi XML:n tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia heterogeenisen palveluverkon integroinnissa. Työssä kuvataan XML-kielen yleistä teoriaa ja perehdytään etenkin sovellusten välisen kommunikoinnin kannalta tärkeisiin ominaisuuksiin. Samalla käydään läpi sovelluskehitysympäristöjen muuttumista heterogeenisemmiksi ja siitä seurannutta palveluarkkitehtuurien kehittymistä ja kuinka nämä muutokset vaikuttavat XML:n hyväksikäyttöön. Työssä suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin luonnollisen kielen palvelukehitykseen Fuse-palvelualusta. Työssä kuvataan palvelualustan arkkitehtuuri ja siinä tarkastellaan XML:n hyödyntämistä luonnollisen kielen tulkin ja palvelun integroinnissa. Samalla arvioidaan muita XML:n käyttömahdollisuuksia Fuse-palvelualustan parantamiseksi.
