Inovirus is a helical array of agr-helical protein asymmetric units surrounding a DNA core. X-ray fibre diffraction studies show that the Pf1 species of Inovirus can undergo a reversible temperature-induced transition between two similar structural forms having slightly different virion helix parameters. Molecular models of the two forms show no evidence for altered interactions between the protein and either the solvent or the viral DNA; but there are significant differences in the shape and orientation of the protein asymmetric unit, related to the changes in the virion parameters. Normal modes involving libration of whole asymmetric units are in a frequency range with appreciable entropy of libration, and the structural transition may be related to changes in libration.

The structures of Ca0.5Ti2P3O12 and Sr0.5Ti2P3O12, low-thermal-expansion materials, have been refined by the Rietveld method using high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. The assignment of space group R[3 with combining macron] to NASICON-type compounds containing divalent cations is confirmed. 31P magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MASNMR) data are presented as supporting data. A comparison of changes in the polyhedral network resulting from the cation distribution, is made with NaTi2P3O12 and Nb2P3O12. Factors that may govern thermal expansion in this family of compounds are discussed.

X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XRDLPA) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformed microstructure of a recently developed boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) S-1 and 1 S-1). Microstructural parameters like average domain size, average microstrain within the domain and dislocation density of the two phases were determined using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The results indicate an increase in the microstrain and dislocation density for the alpha-phase and decrease for the beta-phase in the case of boron modified alloys as compared to the normal material. Microstructural modifications viz, the grain refinement and the presence of hard, brittle TiB particles in the case of boron modified alloy are held responsible for the observed difference in the dislocation density. The complex [Cu-II (theo)(2)(H2O)(3)].2H(2)O (theo = theophylline) was obtained from aqueous solution. The crystals belong to the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, and are reflection twins about the (001) face. The structure was solved using data from a twinned crystal and refined to final R and R(W) values of 0.069 and 0.064, respectively. Copper has a square-pyramidal coordination with two thee molecules coordinating through N(7) at equatorial positions. The remaining sites are occupied by water molecules. O(6) of one of the thee molecules is at the other axial site at a longer distance of 3.18 Angstrom. This could lead to an alternate (4+1+1) octahedral coordination geometry for Cu-II. The packing is stabilized by stacking interactions between the theophylline moieties at an average separation of 3.46 Angstrom.
High-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of the pyrochlores: Ho2Ti2O7, Y2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7
Resumo:
Synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction was used to study the phase diagrams and determine the compressibilities of the pyrochlore rare-earth titanates Ho2Ti2O7, Y2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7 to 50GPa. The bulk moduli of the cubic phase of these materials were calculated to be 213 +/- 2, 204 +/- 3 and 199 +/- 1GPa, respectively. The onset of a structural phase change from cubic to monoclinic was observed near 37, 42 and 39GPa, respectively. The bulk modulus for the high pressure monoclinic phase of Y2Ti2O7 has been determined to be 185 +/- 3GPa.

The galactose-specific lectin from the seeds of Butea monosperma has been crystallized by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion technique. The crystals belonged to space group P1, with unit-cell parameters a = 78.45, b = 78.91, c = 101.85 A, alpha = 74.30, beta = 76.65, gamma = 86.88 degrees. X-ray diffraction data were collected to a resolution of 2.44 A under cryoconditions (100 K) using a MAR image-plate detector system mounted on a rotating-anode X-ray generator. Molecular-replacement calculations carried out using the coordinates of several structures of legume lectins as search models indicate that the galactose-specific lectin from B. monosperma forms an octamer.

A new ruthenium(II) complex of the type [Ru(O2CMe)(MeCN)2(PPh3)2](CiO4) (1) has been isolated from a reaction between Ru2Cl(O2CMe), and PPh3 in MeCN followed by the addition of NaClO4. The structure of 1 is determined by single crystal X-ray studies. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group C2/m with the following unit cell dimensions for the C42H39N2O6P2ClRu(M = 866.15): a = 23.295(1)angstrom, b = 23.080(1)angstrom, c = 9.159(1)angstrom, beta = 107.32(1)-degrees, V = 4701(1)angstrom3, Z = 4, D(c) = 1.224 gcm-3, lambda(Mo - K-alpha) = 0.7107 angstrom, mu(Mo - K-alpha) = 4.09 cm-1, T = 293K, R = 0.081 (R(w) = 0.094) for 2860 reflections with I greater-than-or-equal-to 3-sigma(I) and g = 0.015853. In the complex cation, the symmetry about the metal centre is essentially octahedral showing the presence of a chelating acetato, two cis-oriented MeCN and two trans-disposed PPh3 ligands. The mechanistic aspects of the core cleavage reaction are discussed.

In order to gain access to the heptacyclic tetraone 3, efforts were directed towards the utilisation of the major 'unwanted' [4 + 2]-adduct 11 of tetrachlorodimethoxycyclopentadiene and norbornenobenzoquinone. Epoxides derived from the diol and dimethoxy derivatives of the adduct 11 undergo facile Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement resulting in the required endo, syn, endo stereochemistry as well as methano-bridge functionalisation to deliver 18 and 24, respectively. However, intramolecular ether formation, occurring via the capture of carbocation intermediate with the transannularly poised oxygen functionality, is a more facile process. Attempts to cleave the ether linkage resulted in the formation of a novel transannularly cyclised twisted bowl shape heptacyclic compound 30 and its structure has been established through X-ray crystallography.

Treatment of the lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, cis-{EtNP(OR)}(3) [R = C6H4Br-4 (L-1) or C6H4Br-2 (L-2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] (NBD = norbornadiene) yields the mononuclear complexes [Mo(CO)(4)L-1] (1) and [Mo(CO)(4)L-2] (2). which have been characterised by IR, NMR (P-31 and H-1) and FAB mass spectral data. The structure of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and conformational changes brought about by complexation are discussed in terms of a bonding model based on "negative hyperconjugation". (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Complexes of the formulation [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(O-2-C6H4-CH=NC6H4-4-CH3)(L)](ClO4), where L is gamma-picoline, 4-vinylpyridine, 1-methylimidazole and 1-vinylimidazole have been prepared and characterised. The molecular structure of the vinylpyridine adduct has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with the following cell dimensions for the C31H33CIN2O5Ru(M = 650.11): a = 10.890(2)Angstrom, b = 22.295(9)Angstrom, c = 12.930(2)Angstrom, beta = 109.30(2)degrees(3), V = 2964(l)Angstrom 3, Z = 4; D-c = 1.457g cm(-3), lambda(Mo-K alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom; mu(Mo-K alpha)= 6.61 cm(-1); T = 293 K; R = 0.0359 (wR(2) = 0.0981) for 4819 reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The structure shows the non-bonding nature of the double bond of the 4-vinylpyridine ligand in the complex in which the metal is bonded to the eta(6)-p-cymene, the N, O-bidentate chelating schiff-base and the unidentate N-donor pyridine ligands.

Single crystals of Bi2V1-xGexO5.5-x/2 (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were grown by slow cooling of melts. Bismuth vanadate transforms from an orthorhombic to a tetragonal structure and subsequently to an orthorhombic system when the Ge4+ concentration was varied from x = 0.2 to x = 0.6. All of these compositions crystallized in polar space groups (Aba2, F4mm, and Fmm2 for x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6, respectively). The structures were fully determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
