With electricity consumption increasing within the UnitedStates, new paradigms of delivering electricity are required in order to meet demand. One promising option is the increased use of distributedpowergeneration. Already a growing percentage of electricity generation, distributedgeneration locates the power plant physically close to the consumer, avoiding transmission and distribution losses as well as providing the possibility of combined heat and power. Despite the efficiency gains possible, regulators and utilities have been reluctant to implement distributedgeneration, creating numerous technical, regulatory, and business barriers. Certain governments, most notable California, are making concerted efforts to overcome these barriers in order to ensure distributedgeneration plays a part as the country meets demand while shifting to cleaner sources of energy.

Pressure measurements on the surface of a 1:230 scale model of Bolund Island are presented. The model is smooth and no boundary layer generation has been considered since the experiment is designed as the simplest possible reference case. Measurement have been taken for a range of Reynolds numbers based on the average undisturbed wind speed U∞ and the maximum height of the island, h [1.7×104, 8.5×104], and for a range of wind directions. Four minutes time series of pressure in more than 400 points have been acquired and analysed to obtain the spatial distribution of both the time average and the variance of the pressure signal. The horizontal extension of the detachment bubble for the different Reynolds numbers and wind directions is identified by isobars and curves of constant value of pressure variance. The applicability of this technique for evaluating the horizontal topology of high turbulence regions associated to detachment bubbles after escarpments in potential wind farm sites is analysed. The results obtained shows that the behaviour of the mean pressure coefficient, Cp, the std. pressure coefficient, Cp, and the skewness of the pressure, Sp can be used to study the bubble over the island to a certain extent. This experiment is part of the set of different analysis on the Bolund test case that is being undertaken within WAUDIT project by the different scientific groups.

Next generation access networks (NGAN) will support a renewed electronic communication market where main opportunities lie in the provision of ubiquitous broadband connectivity, applications and content. From their deployment it is expected a wealth of innovations. Within this framework, the project reviews the variety of NGAN deployment options available for rural environments, derives a simple method for approximate cost calculations, and then discusses and compares the results obtained. Data for Spain are used for practical calculations, but the model is applicable with minor modifications to most of the rural areas of European countries. The final part of the paper is devoted to review the techno-economic implications of a network deployment in a rural environment as well as the adequacy and possible developments of the regulatory framework involved

García et al. present a class of column generation (CG) algorithms for nonlinear programs. Its main motivation from a theoretical viewpoint is that under some circumstances, finite convergence can be achieved, in much the same way as for the classic simplicial decomposition method; the main practical motivation is that within the class there are certain nonlinear column generation problems that can accelerate the convergence of a solution approach which generates a sequence of feasible points. This algorithm can, for example, accelerate simplicial decomposition schemes by making the subproblems nonlinear. This paper complements the theoretical study on the asymptotic and finite convergence of these methods given in [1] with an experimental study focused on their computational efficiency. Three types of numerical experiments are conducted. The first group of test problems has been designed to study the parameters involved in these methods. The second group has been designed to investigate the role and the computation of the prolongation of the generated columns to the relative boundary. The last one has been designed to carry out a more complete investigation of the difference in computational efficiency between linear and nonlinear column generation approaches. In order to carry out this investigation, we consider two types of test problems: the first one is the nonlinear, capacitated single-commodity network flow problem of which several large-scale instances with varied degrees of nonlinearity and total capacity are constructed and investigated, and the second one is a combined traffic assignment model

Starting on June 2011, NGCPV is the first project funded jointly between the European Commission (EC) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan to research on new generation concentration photovoltaics (CPV). The Project, through a collaborative research between seven European and nine Japanese leading research centers in the field of CPV, aims at lowering the cost of the CPVproduced photovoltaic kWh down to 5 ?cents. The main objective of the project is to improve the present concentrator cell, module and system efficiency, as well as developing advanced characterization tools for CPV components and systems. As particular targets, the project aims at achieving a cell efficiency of at least 45% and a CPV module with an efficiency greater than 35%. This paper describes the R&D activities that are being carried out within the NGCPV project and summarizes some of the most relevant results that have already been attained, for instance: the manufacturing of a 44.4% world record efficiency triple junction solar cell (by Sharp Corp.) and the installation of a 50 kWp experimental CPV plant in Spain, which will be used to obtain accurate forecasts of the energy produced at system level.

Sterile coal is a low-value residue associated to the coal extraction and mining activity. According to the type and origin of the coal bed configuration, sterile coal production can mainly vary on quantity, calorific value and presence of sulphur compounds. In addition, the potential availability of sterile coal within Spain is apparently high and its contribution to the local power generation would be of interest playing a significant role. The proposed study evaluates the availability and deployment of gasification technologies to drive clean electricity generation from waste coal and sterile rock coal, incorporating greenhouse gas emission mitigation systems, like CO2, H2S and NOx removal systems. It establishes the target facility and its conceptual basic design proposal. The syngas obtained after the gasification of sterile coal is processed through specific conditioning units before entering into the combustion chamber of a gas turbine. Flue gas leaving the gas turbine is ducted to a heat recovery steam generation boiler; the steam produced within the boilerdrives a steam turbine. The target facility resembles a singular Integrated Gasification in Combined Cycle (IGCC) power station. The evaluation of the conceptual basic design according to the power output set for a maximum sterile contribution, established that rates over 95% H2S and 90% CO2 removal can be achieved. Noticeable decrease of NOx compounds can be also achieved by the use of commercial technology. A techno-economic approach of the conceptual basic design is made evaluating the integration of potential unitsand their implementation within the target facility aiming toachieve clean power generation. The criterion to be compliant with the most restrictive regulation regarding environmental emissions is setting to carry out this analysis.

There is an increasing tendency of turning the current power grid, essentially unaware of variations in electricity demand and scattered energy sources, into something capable of bringing a degree of intelligence by using tools strongly related to information and communication technologies, thus turning into the so-called Smart Grid. In fact, it could be considered that the Smart Grid is an extensive smart system that spreads throughout any area where power is required, providing a significant optimization in energy generation, storage and consumption. However, the information that must be treated to accomplish these tasks is challenging both in terms of complexity (semantic features, distributed systems, suitable hardware) and quantity (consumption data, generation data, forecasting functionalities, service reporting), since the different energy beneficiaries are prone to be heterogeneous, as the nature of their own activities is. This paper presents a proposal on how to deal with these issues by using a semantic middleware architecture that integrates different components focused on specific tasks, and how it is used to handle information at every level and satisfy end user requests.

Within the technological framework of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), consumers are currently requesting multimedia services with simplicity of use, reliability, security and service availability through mobile and fixed access. Network operators are proposing the Next Generation Networks (NGN) to address the challenges of providing both services and network convergence. Apart from these considerations, there is a need to provide social and healthcare assistance services in order to support the progressive aging in the elderly population. In order to achieve this objective, the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) initiative proposes ICT systems and services to promote autonomy and an independent life among the elderly. This paper describes the design and implementation of a group of services, called “service enablers”, which helps AAL applications to be supported in NGN. The presented enablers are identified to support the teleconsulting applications requirements in an NGN environment, involving the implementation of a virtual waiting room, a virtual whiteboard, a multimedia multiconference and a vital-signs monitoring presence status. A use case is defined and implemented to evaluate the developed enablers' performance.

ABSTRACT This thesis pursues the development and growth of hybrid solar cells -through Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE)- formed by III-V semiconductors on silicon substrates. This integration aims to provide an alternative to current III-V cells, which, despite hold the efficiency record for photovoltaic devices, their cost is, today, too high to be economically competitive to conventional silicon cells. Accordingly, the target of this project is to link the already demonstrated efficiency potential of III-V semiconductor multijunction solar cell architectures with the low cost and unconstrained availability of silicon substrates. Within the existing alternatives for the integration of III-V semiconductors on silicon substrates, this thesis is based on the metamorphic approach for the development of GaAsP/Si dual-junction solar cells. In this approach, the accommodation of the lattice mismatch is handle through the appearance of crystallographic defects (namely dislocations), which will be confined through the incorporation of a graded buffer layer. The resulting surface will have, on the one hand a good structural quality; and on the other hand the desired lattice parameter. Different research groups have been working in the last years in a structure similar to the one here described, being most of their efforts directed towards the optimization of the heteroepitaxial growth of III-V compounds on Si, with the primary goal of minimizing the appearance of crystal defects. However, none of these groups has paid much attention to the development and optimization of the bottom silicon cell, which, indeed, will play an important role on the overall solar cell performance. In this respect, the idea of this thesis is to complete the work done so far in this field by focusing on the design and optimization of the bottom silicon cell, to harness its efficiency. This work is divided into six chapters, organized according to the natural progress of the bottom cell development. After a brief introduction to the growth of III-V semiconductors on Si substrates, pointing out the different alternatives for their integration; we move to the experimental part, which is initiated by an extensive description and characterization of silicon substrates -the base of the III-V structure-. In this chapter, a comprehensive analysis of the different treatments (chemical and thermal) required for preparing silicon surfaces for subsequent epitaxial growth is presented. Next step on the development of the bottom cell is the formation of the p-n junction itself, which is faced in Chapter 3. Firstly, the optimization of the emitter configuration (in terms of doping and thickness) is handling by analytic models. This study includes a comparison between the different alternatives for the emitter formation, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. After the theoretical design of the emitter, it is defined (through the modeling of the P-in-Si diffusion process) a practical parameter space for the experimental implementation of this emitter configuration. The characterization of these emitters through different analytical tools (i.e. ECV or SIMS) will validate and provide experimental support for the theoretical models. A side effect of the formation of the emitter by P diffusion is the roughening of the Si surface. Accordingly, once the p-n junction is formed, it is necessary to ensure that the Si surface is smooth enough and clean for subsequent phases. Indeed, the roughness of the Si must be carefully controlled since it will be the basis for the epitaxial growth. Accordingly, after quantifying (experimentally and by theoretical models) the impact of the phosphorus on the silicon surface morphology, different alternatives for the recovery of the surface are proposed in order to achieve a sub-nanometer roughness which does not endanger the quality of the incoming III-V layers. Moving a step further in the development of the Ill-V/Si structure implies to address the challenges associated to the GaP on Si nucleation. On the one hand, this layer will provide surface passivation to the emitter. In this sense, the growth of the III-V layer must be homogeneous and continuous so the Si emitter gets fully passivated, providing a minimal surface recombination velocity at the interface. On the other hand, the growth should be such that the appearance of typical defects related to the growth of a polar layer on a non-polar substrate is minimized. Chapter 5 includes an exhaustive study of the GaP on Si nucleation process, exploring different nucleation routines for achieving a high morphological and structural quality, which will be characterized by means of different microscopy techniques. Finally, an extensive study of the photovoltaic properties of the bottom cell and its evolution during key phases in the fabrication of a MOCVD-grown III-V-on-Si epitaxial structure (i.e. the formation of the bottom cell; and the growth of III-V layers) will be presented in the last part of this thesis. This study was conducted in collaboration with The Ohio State University, who has extensive experience in the growth of III-V materials on silicon. This thesis concludes by highlighting the overall conclusions of the presented work and proposing different lines of work to be undertaken in the future.

ABSTRACT The aim of the research pursued in this thesis is to identify some human resources management levers in organizations to improve their performance through individual’s commitment management, focusing in organizations immersed in the so-called knowledge society. In order to find out these levers, the author analysed some of the psychosocial factors that promote engagement to the organizations and, according to the scientific literature, have effects in their productivity. These factors analysed are organisational commitment and citizenship behaviours. Additionally, the investigation also focuses on work-life balance policies and gender considerations, because of their relevance and topicality for the human resources’ policies. In the light of this, the investigation focuses on some of the psychosocial factors that promote organisational commitment, and delves into two concepts: the analysis of the commitment of professionals to the organization for which they work, and the organizational citizenship behaviours exhibited in the organization by its members. For this, a theoretical framework is performed for the following items: the professional’s commitment which is the pillar of this work; the organisational citizenship as a cultural model to promote that commitment; the role of the leaders; the effects of the work-life balance policies; the different perceptions of the professionals because of their gender; and an efficient salary review system, which is coherent with the conceptual framework set. The methodology selected for this work was the analysis in depth of the case of a Spanish company, Red Eléctrica de España, through three basic subjects: the first consists of a thorough analysis of the data obtained in the two work climate surveys made by this company in 2006 and 2009; the second focuses on the development of a mathematical model for calculating efficient salary reviews through an optimization model; and the third is the result of the author’s deep understanding of the company, its culture and its performance because of his professional experience as a manager in the area of human resource development, which was his role in the organization for nine years. The author investigated in the analysis of this case about the influence of gender on the employees’ organizational commitment and citizenship behaviours, in order to find out perception differences that can be explained by the highly masculine organisational culture such Red Eléctrica de España had during the studied period. Additionally, because of the importance of the work-life balance promotion in the Spanish labour scene, the case study analysis includes their effect in the employees’ commitment. This analysis allows to know motivating are these measures in the studied organization and, as a result, the most appropriate type of management thereof for social purposes, not only intended to ensure that employees can balance their work and personal demands, but also improving the work climate, the productivity and the organisational commitment. The investigation identifies the factors which best explain the work climate of the organization and concludes the central role of the leadership, embodied in the performance of every manager, to boost the work climate in their teams. Since this thesis pivots on the important role the generation of a culture of organizational citizenship has, the investigation has been complemented with the development of a analytic tool that facilitates the calculation of the salary review increments according to the principles of transparency, equity and justice in line with a work culture that promotes organisational citizenship behaviours. For this, this works develops a new method for calculating fixed salary increases through an innovative and compact mixed integer linear programming model. This model enables organizations to design compensation policies easily and quickly, and facilitates the transparency of the compensation management system. The method for determining variable remuneration has not been addressed because it is relatively less complex issue and widely discussed. The first conclusion of the conducted investigation concerns aspects of organizational culture that could be identified as commitment drivers. In the case study exists a strong and mutual relationship between the characteristics defining the emotional commitment and the organisational citizenship behaviours. The investigation has found out a meaningful and high correlation between indicators of commitment and the factors collecting organizational citizenship behaviour. This correlation with organisational citizenship is remarkable for both, rational and emotional, commitment. The correlation between organizational citizenship behaviours and emotional commitment and is greater than the one with rational commitment. From the practitioner point of view, these relationships show the importance of promoting an organizational culture based on the principles of organizational citizenship to achieve high levels of emotional engagement of professionals and improve organizational efficiency. The second conclusion relates to the effect of work-life balance policies in organizations. On this matter, the investigation concludes that for the case study, work-life balance measures do not have a strong relationship with the emotional commitment, and unless they can be usually considered as a tool to improve employees’ emotional commitment. However, a certain relationship between perceptions of work-life facilities and organisational commitment exists, especially with the rational commitment to the organization. This relationship appears because for employees of the analysed organization, work-life balance measures could be considered as a part of working conditions offered to them by the organization. The third conclusion concerns the relationship between the gender of workers and their level of commitment and organizational citizenship. In this case study, there is not any relationship between gender and the professional’s commitment level nor the perception of organizational citizenship; and the situation varies during the period studied. The fourth conclusion refers to the impact that the actions of the leaders have on the work climate. In the case study, the performance of management and the level of commitment generated, explains more than a third of the variance of work climate - understood as such reflecting the overall set of questions that constitute the work climate survey -. The analysis concludes that in the case study perception that employees have of their leaders has a significant effect on the rest of perceptions of commitment, organizational citizenship and other factors making the work climate of the organization. The fifth and last conclusion represents the contribution of a new model for calculating the salary increment, coherent with a corporate citizenship management culture. The solution obtained from this model consists of salary increases for each employee; these increases consider the employee’s professional performance, salary level relative to peers within the organization, and professional group. In addition to budget constraints, we modelled other elements typical of compensation systems, such as equity and justice. The major contribution of this work is the mathematical formulation of the criteria that are typically the basis for salary management. The compact formulation and the ease of obtaining the optimal solution facilitate its use in large companies that maintain very high levels of homogeneity across employees. Designing different strategies for specific groups within a company is also possible. A major benefit of this method is that it allows a company to independently manage its salary and assessment policies. Because obtaining salary-revision matrices without using the mathematical model we present in this paper is typically done iteratively by tuning previously defined matrices, managers commonly tune values for assessing employee performance to ensure that salary increases and performance assessments are consistent; however, this distorts the evaluation process and decreases employee motivation. In this MILP model, employee performance is only one parameter of several input parameters used in designing a salary policy that is independent of the results of performance-assessment values.

Molecular methods are used widely to measure genetic diversity within populations and determine relationships among species. However, it is difficult to observe genomic evolution in action because these dynamics are too slow in most organisms. To overcome this limitation, we sampled genomes from populations of Escherichia coli evolving in the laboratory for 10,000 generations. We analyzed the genomes for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) using seven insertion sequences (IS) as probes; most polymorphisms detected by this approach reflect rearrangements (including transpositions) rather than point mutations. The evolving genomes became increasingly different from their ancestor over time. Moreover, tremendous diversity accumulated within each population, such that almost every individual had a different genetic fingerprint after 10,000 generations. As has been often suggested, but not previously shown by experiment, the rates of phenotypic and genomic change were discordant, both across replicate populations and over time within a population. Certain pivotal mutations were shared by all descendants in a population, and these are candidates for beneficial mutations, which are rare and difficult to find. More generally, these data show that the genome is highly dynamic even over a time scale that is, from an evolutionary perspective, very brief.

We have developed a technique called the generation of longer cDNA fragments from serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) tags for gene identification (GLGI), to convert SAGE tags of 10 bases into their corresponding 3′ cDNA fragments covering hundred bases. A primer containing the 10-base SAGE tag is used as the sense primer, and a single base anchored oligo(dT) primer is used as an antisense primer in PCR, together with Pfu DNA polymerase. By using this approach, a cDNA fragment extending from the SAGE tag toward the 3′ end of the corresponding sequence can be generated. Application of the GLGI technique can solve two critical issues in applying the SAGE technique: one is that a longer fragment corresponding to a SAGE tag, which has no match in databases, can be generated for further studies; the other is that the specific fragment corresponding to a SAGE tag can be identified from multiple sequences that match the same SAGE tag. The development of the GLGI method provides several potential applications. First, it provides a strategy for even wider application of the SAGE technique for quantitative analysis of global gene expression. Second, a combined application of SAGE/GLGI can be used to complete the catalogue of the expressed genes in human and in other eukaryotic species. Third, it can be used to identify the 3′ cDNA sequence from any exon within a gene. It can also be used to confirm the reality of exons predicted by bioinformatic tools in genomic sequences. Fourth, a combined application of SAGE/GLGI can be applied to define the 3′ boundary of expressed genes in the genomic sequences in human and in other eukaryotic genomes.

The synthesis of novel fluorogenic retro-aldol substrates for aldolase antibody 38C2 is described. These substrates are efficiently and specifically processed by antibody aldolases but not by natural cellular enzymes. Together, the fluorogenic substrates and antibody aldolases provide reporter gene systems that are compatible with living cells. The broad scope of the antibody aldolase allows for the processing of a range of substrates that can be designed to allow fluorescence monitoring at a variety of wavelengths. We also have developed the following concept in fluorescent protein tags. β-Diketones bearing a fluorescent tag are bound covalently by the aldolase antibody and not other proteins. We anticipate that proteins fused with the antibody can be tagged specifically and covalently within living cells with fluorophores of virtually any color, thereby providing an alternative to green fluorescent protein fusions.
