Pseudo-Reimannian metrics with parallel spinor fields and vanishing Ricci tensor

I discuss geometry and normal forms for pseudo-Riemannian metrics with parallel spinor fields in some interesting dimensions. I also discuss the interaction of these conditions for parallel spinor fields with the condition that the Ricci tensor vanish (which, for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, is not an automatic consequence of the existence of a nontrivial parallel spinor field).

Three-dimensional outcomes of twin-block appliance treatment and the influence of the postured wax bite

Aims 1 To identify the 3D soft tissue volumetric and linear landmark changes following treatment with the Twin-Block Appliance TBA. 2 To estimate the TBA treatment outcome on the soft tissue facial profile volumetric and linear landmark changes from the Postured Wax Bite (PWB). 3 To identify if there is any association between certain soft tissue landmark variables and successful treatment outcome of the TBA as measured by the reduction in overjet. 4 To assess the effects of TBA treatment on facial expressions. Materials and Methods Forty-seven Caucasian subjects with Class II division 1 were recruited. 3D images captured of each subject, pre-treatment (T1), with the PWB (T2) and at the end of treatment (T3). Soft tissue volumetric and linear changes as well as the correlation between facial parameters and successful treatment were calculated. Results The mean soft tissue volumetric change from T1 to T3 was 22.24 ± 16.73 cm³. Soft tissue profile linear changes from T1-T3 for lower facial landmarks were 4-5 mm. From T1-T3, the mean soft tissue volumetric change of the total sample was 60% of the change produced by the PWB (T1 to T2). Correlations were weak for all 3D facial parameters and successful overjet reduction. Facial expression changes were only significant for the lower landmarks. Conclusions 1 TBA treatment, in growing subjects, increased the lower facial soft tissue volume and caused forward movement of the lower soft tissue facial profile landmarks.2 The PWB can be used to estimate the treatment outcome of the TBA on soft tissue profile changes.3 No association was found between soft tissue landmark variables and successful overjet reduction.4 TBA treatment had no effect on the upper facial landmarks for each facial expression but it changed the lower facial expressions significantly except for maximal smile in males.

The dredges described in this report were taken on the PR II, CORPUS 4 Expedition in January 1969 by the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center from the R/V Atlantic Twin. Dredges recovered and are available at USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center for sampling and study.

Telephones, Voice Recorders, Microphones, Phonographs: A Media Archaeology of Sonic Technologies in Twin Peaks

This article argues that sonic technologies, such as telephones, voice recorders and phonographs, alongside more (audio)visual ones such as flickering fluorescent lights, videos, and the television sets are crucial to the world of Twin Peaks, and constitute this world as both a communications network with portals to the unknown, and an accumulation of recordings of ghosted voices and entities, perhaps finding its ultimate expression in the backwards reprocessed speech in the Black Lodge. This lodge can be understood as a space in which there are nothing but recordings, albeit now on a cosmic, spiritual and demonic level. Using a media archaeological approach to these devices in the series, this paper will argue that they were already operating by a media archaeological logic, generating the world of Twin Peaks as a haunted archive of sonic and other mediations.

David Bowie, brinquedos adultos e outras dimensões estranhas do universo de Twin Peaks

The article is based fundamentally on the authors' participation in the International Conference “I’ll See You Again in 25 Years: The return of Twin Peaks and generations of cult TV”, held on 21 and 22 May 2015, at the School of Arts and Media, at the University of Salford in England. Starting from there, it makes an irregular discussion of issues and working angles around the television series launched in 1990, a work by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Some issues gain particular attention: 1) the relations of the series to the album Outside (1995) by David Bowie; 2) the population of adult toys related to the series, as derivative products, driven by fans in their most playful exercises of affection and remembrance. Despite the article’s intentionally adopted tone of an “academic report”, it can evoke rich theoretical questions in a field of objects that are in a complex upgrade process and have to be subsequently treated according to more regular methodological procedures, seeking further theoretical and epistemological clarifications

May the Giant Be With You: Twin Peaks Season Two, Episode One and the Television Auteur

The premiere of Season Two of Twin Peaks garnered some of the highest ratings of the series, with celebrated filmmaker and co-creator David Lynch stepping back into the director’s chair. Yet, within this episode many traditional television conventions are flouted, and in response the following week the ratings dropped dramatically. From its slow-paced opening scenes in which an old man admonishes the wounded, bleeding protagonist to drink his warm milk before it gets cold, followed by a vision of a giant speaking in riddles, this episode not only tested its audience’s patience but also seemed to set out to deliberately confuse them. In this essay I will explore how this episode is an example of auteur television, an episode in which the director expresses a consistency of style and theme that is similar to their other work, as well as examine how Lynch’s approach to televisual aesthetics has influenced the way that contemporary film directors have crossed over into the television medium. However, when taking into account the differences in the two media of film and television notions of authorship, with regards to the position of the director, become complicated, especially when considering contemporary television and the rise of the showrunner as key creative force. Even when looking back at Lynch’s contribution to Twin Peaks it becomes clear that the series was deeply collaborative, with Lynch absent during parts of the filming. Yet, when examining the extensive material that has been written about Twin Peaks there is still a continuing tendency to place Lynch as the sole author. The placement of Lynch as author can be argued in relation to the episodes he directed (as will be explored below in relation to the first episode of Season Two), but cannot be attributed to him alone when considering the series as a whole. Finally, I will discuss how the figure of the television auteur has become a central element of television reception rather than production, an integral part of a viewer’s search for narrative meaning in a medium where complexity and mystery are now expected and enjoyed. Just as fans scrambled to uncover the many secrets and mysteries of Twin Peaks by looking to Lynch’s other works for answers, a similar process is experienced by fans of television shows existing today.

Experimental Modeling of Twin-Screw Extrusion Processes to Predict Properties of Extruded Composites

Twin-screw extrusion is used to compound fillers into a polymer matrix in order to improve the properties of the final product. The resultant properties of the composite are determined by the operating conditions used during extrusion processing. Changes in the operating conditions affect the physics of the melt flow, inducing unique composite properties. In the following work, the Residence Stress Distribution methodology has been applied to model both the stress behavior and the property response of a twin-screw compounding process as a function of the operating conditions. The compounding of a pigment into a polymer melt has been investigated to determine the effect of stress on the degree of mixing, which will affect the properties of the composite. In addition, the pharmaceutical properties resulting from the compounding of an active pharmaceutical ingredient are modeled as a function of the operating conditions, indicating the physical behavior inducing the property responses.

Aplicabilidade do modelo twin peaks á regulaçao financeira em Portugal

A supervisão de um mundo financeiro muito diversificado e complexo tornou-se uma prioridade e um assunto em destaque desde o despoletar da crise financeira em 2007. O relatório de Larosiere(2009), que surge a pedido da União Europeia, defende que o Twin Peaks é o modelo que melhor resposta pode dar ao mundo financeiro globalizado, complexo e interligado. Este relatório esteve mesmo na base da nova estrutura da supervisão da União Europeia. Por outro lado, acabou por motivar as alterações nos Estados-membros que já estavam em curso, como é o caso do Reino Unido que terminou, em 2013, o processo de adoção de um modelo de supervisão por objetivos. a Holanda já desde 2007 que odotou o Twin Peaks e é a garnde referencia europeia da aplicabilidade do modelo. Protugal procura acompanhar os requesitos da supervisão da Uniao Europeia, ainda com mais atenção, após os escândalos de fraude no setor bancário Portugues. Portugal, que mantem ainda hoje um Modelo Setorial já com alguns ajustamentos, lançou uma consulta publica sobre a proposta de alteração do atual modelo para o Twin Peaks. O estado de emergência financeira em que o pais entrou adiou a discussão sobre esse tema, nunca se concretizou a sua adoção até á data. O presente trabalho visa analisr, por um lado, a efetiva aplicabilidade deste Modelo no sistema financeiro português, extraindo as alterações que implicaria e as vantagens e desvantagens da sai implementação, utilizando como base comparativa os modelos implementados na Holanda e, mais recentemente, no Reino Unido. O modelo Twin Peaks proposto tem grandes semelhancas com o Holandes,criando atraves do Conselho Nacional de Supervisores Financeiros o elo de ligacao entre os restantes agentes de forma assegurar o sucesso na definicao dos objetivos e interligados (fator critico para o sucesso do modelo).Efetivamente,os fatores que justificaram a alteracao do Modelo na Holanda e Reino Unido estao presents,na sua maioria,na economia portuguesa. Na literature, encontramos diversos fatores que validam a aplicacao do Modelo Twin Peaks a regulacao financeira portuguesa, nao obstante levantaram/se ainda reservas quanto a validadedacapacidade de interligacao de uma Europa com um modelo cada vez mais sectorial com os estados membros protocolados ao Twin peaks e a capacidade de definicao de objetivos e amplitude de atuacao de cada agente nacional.

Diagnosi misfire: analisi delle strategie e automatizzazione di un processo di calibrazione di un motore V6 twin spark con sistema a precamera

L’obiettivo del seguente elaborato è quello di spiegare le modalità con cui viene monitorato il misfire, le varie strategie a supporto e la calibrazione che ne consegue in un motore V6 Twin Spark con sistema a precamera. Le varie attività sono state svolte nel gruppo OBD presso il dipartimento Powertrain dell’azienda Maserati S.p.A. nell’ambito della diagnosi misfire. Nella prima parte dell’elaborato verrà introdotto un quadro illustrativo delle normative vigenti in tema di emissioni per un motore a combustione interna che delineerà l’esigenza di avere un sistema di monitoraggio On-Board Diagnostic, e verranno descritte le principali diagnosi per i componenti meccanici ed elettronici. Nel secondo capitolo verrà introdotto il concetto di misfire, la sua classificazione e i requisiti che devono essere rispettati per il suo monitoraggio; nell’ultima parte, verrà descritto il motore oggetto di studi e le strumentazioni utilizzate per lo sviluppo dell’attività. Nel terzo capitolo verranno introdotte le varie strategie utilizzate per il rilevamento della mancata accensione della miscela e verrà illustrato come il sistema a precamera ha richiesto la loro revisione. In particolare, per quanto riguarda l’utilizzo della corrente di ionizzazione saranno analizzate le criticità dovute a questo nuovo sviluppo e per l’analisi della variazione di velocità angolare della ruota fonica verrà analizzato come tale sviluppo ha impattato nelle temperature del catalizzatore e nella robustezza della diagnosi effettuata. Infine, nell’ultimo capitolo verrà illustrato come ci si è approcciati alla calibrazione della finestra di osservazione, partendo dalle prove effettuate al banco, proseguendo con l’analisi di tali prove nelle varie condizioni di funzionamento del motore e concludendo con l’implementazione del processo di calcolo automatizzato per la calibrazione. In merito a quest'ultimo punto è stato sviluppato un Tool finalizzato a calcolare la finestra ottimale per ogni punto motore.

Applicazione del paradigma Digital Twin nell'ambito della gestione di sale operatorie per AUSL Romagna: Dashboard per la visualizzazione dei dati

Oggigiorno, il termine Digital Twin è ampiamente diffuso. Questo concetto si riferisce a un paradigma utilizzato per la prima volta nel 1970, in una missione spaziale statunitense. Un Digital Twin è un gemello digitale, un modello che simula e raccoglie i dati di un oggetto o essere vivente del mondo reale. I Digital Twin sono sviluppati in molti settori e aziende. Tra queste troviamo Fameccanica, la quale ha costruito dei modelli digitali dei propri macchinari per migliorare la formazione dei manutentori e la produzione, Chevron che ha ridotto i costi di manutenzione, General Elettric che associa a ogni turbina venduta un Digital Twin per mantenerla controllata grazie a dei sensori posti sulla turbina stessa. Risulta importante utilizzare i Digital Twin in ambito medico per tracciare la salute del paziente, simulare eventuali interventi e gestire gli ospedali. In particolare, le strutture ospedaliere dell’Emilia Romagna non sono ottimizzate dal punto di vista economico. Infatti, la sala operatoria rappresenta la principale spesa che AUSL Romagna deve affrontare ma, attualmente, l’organizzazione degli interventi non è efficiente. Pertanto, in seguito a problemi sollevati dai referenti di AUSL Romagna, è stato deciso di realizzare un progetto per la tesi riguardante questo ambito. Per risolvere i problemi riscontrati si realizzerà un prototipo di un Digital Twin delle sale operatorie per poter minimizzare i costi. Grazie alla raccolta, in real-time, dei dati memorizzati nel gemello digitale, si possono pianificare al meglio gli interventi in base alla disponibilità delle sale operatorie. Il progetto assume dimensioni considerevoli per questo motivo è stato suddiviso in tre moduli: una componente che si occupa di standardizzare i dati, un Digital Twin che mantiene i dati relativi allo stato attuale delle sale operatorie e un’interfaccia utente che si occupa di visualizzare i dati ai medici.

In questa tesi progettuale si mira ad utilizzare il paradigma digital twin nell'ambito sanitario, più nello specifico si proporrà il suo utilizzo per la gestione delle sale operatorie di AUSL Romagna. L'obiettivo del progetto, disponibile su ghithub, è quello di monitorare la situazione delle sale operatorie, che costituiscono uno dei principali costi per AUSL, in modo da poterle utilizzarle al meglio. Il progetto, date le sue dimensioni, è stato svolto in collaborazione con Sofia Tosi e Serafino Pandolfini, ognuno dei tre partecipanti si è concentrato su un aspetto implementativo diverso.

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di esplorare l’utilizzo del paradigma Digital Twin in ambito sanitario, specificatamente nella modellazione degli interventi chirurgici e della gestione delle sale operatorie. Questo progetto, svolto in collaborazione con AUSL Romagna, origina dalla necessità delle strutture ospedaliere di avere a disposizione un quadro completo della situazione dei vari interventi che vengono svolti ogni giorno.
