The paper provides a systematic approach to designing the laboratory phase of a multiphase experiment, taking into account previous phases. General principles are outlined for experiments in which orthogonal designs can be employed. Multiphase experiments occur widely, although their multiphase nature is often not recognized. The need to randomize the material produced from the first phase in the laboratory phase is emphasized. Factor-allocation diagrams are used to depict the randomizations in a design and the use of skeleton analysis-of-variance (ANOVA) tables to evaluate their properties discussed. The methods are illustrated using a scenario and a case study. A basis for categorizing designs is suggested. This article has supplementary material online.

Results of Raman spectroscopic studies of (NH4)2ZnBr4 crystal in the spectral range from 20-250 cm-1 and over a range of temperature from 90K to 440K covering the low temperature ferroelectric and high temperature incommensurate phases are presented. The plots of the integrated areas and peak heights of the strong Raman lines versus temperature show anomalous behaviour near the two phase transitions.

Short-time analytical solutions of temperature and moving boundary in two-dimensional two-phase freezing due to a cold spot are presented in this paper. The melt occupies a semi-infinite region. Although the method of solution is valid for various other types of boundary conditions, the results in this paper are given only for the prescribed flux boundary conditions which could be space and time dependent. The freezing front propagations along the interior of the melt region exhibit well known behaviours but the propagations along the surface are of new type. The freezing front always depends on material parameters. Several interesting results can be obtained as particular cases of the general results.

Electrical resistance (R) measurements are reported for ternary mixtures of 3-methylpyridine, water and heavy water as a function of temperature (T) and heavy water content in total water. These mixtures exhibit a limited two-phase region marked by a loop size (ΔT) that goes to zero as the double critical point (DCP) is approached. The measurements scanned the ΔT range 1.010°C less-than-or-equals, slant ΔT less-than-or-equals, slant 77.5°C. The critical exponent (θ), which signifies the divergence of ∂R/∂T, doubles within our experimental uncertainties as the DCP is reached very closely.

Phase relations in the system CaO-Fe2O3-Y2O3 in air (P-O2/P-o = 0.21) were explored by equilibrating samples representing eleven compositions in the ternary at 1273 K, followed by quenching to room temperature and phase identification using XRD. Limited mutual solubility was observed between YFeO3 and Ca2Fe2O5. No quaternary oxide was identified. An isothermal section of the phase diagram at 1273 K was constructed from the results. Five three-phase regions and four extended two-phase regions were observed. The extended two-phase regions arise from the limited solid solutions based on the ternary oxides YFeO3 and Ca2Fe2O5. Activities of CaO, Fe2O3 and Y2O3 in the three-phase fields were computed using recently measured thermodynamic data on the ternary oxides. The experimental phase diagram is consistent with thermodynamic data. The computed activities of CaO indicate that compositions of CaO-doped YFeO3 exhibiting good electrical conductivity are not compatible with zirconia-based electrolytes; CaO will react with ZrO2 to form CaZrO3.

Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies of C70 suggest the occurrence of two phase transitions around 350 and 280 K where the high-temperature phase is fcc and the low-temperature phase is monoclinic, best described as a distorted hcp structure with a doubled unit cell; two like-phases (possibly hcp) seem to coexist in the 280-350 K range. Application of pressure gives rise to three distinct transitions associated with characteristic pressure coefficients, the extrapolated values of the transition temperatures at ambient pressure being around 340, 325 and 270 K. Pressure delineates closely related phases Of C70 just as in the case Of C60 which exhibits two orientational phase transitions at high pressures.

Phase relations in the system Mn-Rh-O are established at 1273 K by equilibrating different compositions either in evacuated quartz ampules or in pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 x 10(5) Pa. The quenched samples are examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The alloys and intermetallics in the binary Mn-Rh system are found to be in equilibrium with MnO. There is only one ternary compound, MnRh2O4, with normal spinel structure in the system. The compound Mn3O4 has a tetragonal structure at 1273 K. A solid solution is formed between MnRh2O4 and Mn3O4. The solid solution has the cubic structure over a large range of composition and coexists with metallic rhodium. The partial pressure of oxygen corresponding to this two-phase equilibrium is measured as a function of the composition of the spinel solid solution and temperature. A new solid-state cell, with three separate electrode compartments, is designed to measure accurately the chemical potential of oxygen in the two-phase mixture, Rh + Mn3-2xRh2xO4, which has 1 degree of freedom at constant temperature. From the electromotive force (emf), thermodynamic mixing properties of the Mn3O4-MnRh2O4 solid solution and Gibbs energy of formation of MnRh2O4 are deduced. The activities exhibit negative deviations from Raoult's law for most of the composition range, except near Mn3O4, where a two-phase region exists. In the cubic phase, the entropy of mixing of the two Rh3+ and Mn3+ ions on the octahedral site of the spinel is ideal, and the enthalpy of mixing is positive and symmetric with respect to composition. For the formation of the spinel (sp) from component oxides with rock salt (rs) and orthorhombic (orth) structures according to the reaction, MnO (rs) + Rh2O3 (orth) --> MnRh2O4 (sp), DELTAG-degrees = -49,680 + 1.56T (+/-500) J mol-1. The oxygen potentials corresponding to MnO + Mn3O4 and Rh + Rh2O3 equilibria are also obtained from potentiometric measurements on galvanic cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. From these results, an oxygen potential diagram for the ternary system is developed.

The single perovskite slab alkylammonium lead iodides (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4, n = 12, 16, 18, display two phase transitions, just above room temperature, associated with changes in the alkylammonium chains. We have followed these two phase transitions using scanning calorimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, and IR and Raman spectroscopies. We find the first phase transition to be associated with symmetry changes arising from a dynamic rotational disordering of the ammonium headgroup of the chain whereas the second transition, the melting of the chains in two dimensions, is characterized by an increased conformational disorder of the methylene units of the alkyl chains. We examine these phase transitions in light of the interesting optical properties of these materials, as well as the relevance of these systems as models for phase transitions in lipid bilayers.

Distributed space time coding for wireless relay networks where the source, the destination and the relays have multiple antennas have been studied by Jing and Hassibi. In this set up, the transmit and the receive signals at different antennas of the same relay are processed and designed independently, even though the antennas are colocated. In this paper, a wireless relay network with single antenna at the source and the destination and two antennas at each of the R relays is considered. In the first phase of the two-phase transmission model, a T -length complex vector is transmitted from the source to all the relays. At each relay, the inphase and quadrature component vectors of the received complex vectors at the two antennas are interleaved before processing them. After processing, in the second phase, a T x 2R matrix codeword is transmitted to the destination. The collection of all such codewords is called Co-ordinate interleaved distributed space-time code (CIDSTC). Compared to the scheme proposed by Jing-Hassibi, for T ges AR, it is shown that while both the schemes give the same asymptotic diversity gain, the CIDSTC scheme gives additional asymptotic coding gain as well and that too at the cost of negligible increase in the processing complexity at the relays.

Phase equilibria in the Cu-rich corner of the ternary system Cu-Al-Sn have been re-investigated. Final equilibrium microstructures of 20 ternary alloy compositions near Cu3Al were used to refine the ternary phase diagram. The microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy (OM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis and transmission electron microscopy. Isothermal sections at 853, 845, 833, 818, 808, 803 and 773 K have been composed. Vertical sections have been drawn at 2 and 3 at% Sn, showing beta(1) as a stable phase. Three-phase fields (alpha + beta + beta(1)) and (beta + beta(1) + gamma(1)) result from beta -> alpha + beta(1) eutectoid and beta + gamma(1) -> beta(1) peritectoid reactions forming metastable beta(1) in the binary Cu-Al. With the lowering of temperature from 853 to 818 K, these three-phase fields are shifted to lower Sn concentrations, with simultaneous shrinkage and shifting of (beta + beta(1)) two-phase field. The three-phase field (alpha + beta + gamma(1)) resulting from the binary reaction beta -> alpha + gamma(1) shifts to higher Sn contents, with associated shrinkage of the beta field, with decreasing temperature. With further reduction of temperature, a new ternary invariant reaction beta + beta(1) -> alpha + gamma(1) is observed at similar to 813 K. The beta disappears completely at 803 K, giving rise to the three-phase field (alpha + beta(1) + gamma(1)). Some general guidelines on the role of ternary additions (M) on the stability of the ordered beta(1) phase are obtained by comparing the results of this study with data in the literature on other systems in the systems group Cu-Al-M.

The lead-free Ba (Ti1-xZrx)O-3 ceramic has shown enhanced piezo-response (d(33)) in a narrow composition interval (0.01 <= x <= 0.03) exhibiting the coexistence of two ferroelectric phases. The system presents two electric-field-dependent-property regimes: (i) a low field regime (E < 1.7 kV mm(-1)) where d(33) is nearly independent of the poling field, and (ii) (E > 1.7 kV mm(-1)) for which d(33) drops sharply. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the later phenomenon is related to field driven irreversible structural transformation, which tends to drive the system away from an equilibrium two phase state to a nearly single phase metastable state.

The two-phase Brust-Schiffrin method (BSM) is used to synthesize highly stable nanoparticles of noble metals. A phase transfer catalyst (PTC) is used to bring in aqueous phase soluble precursors into the organic phase to enable particle synthesis there. Two different mechanisms for phase transfer are advanced in the literature. The first mechanism considers PTC to bring in an aqueous phase soluble precursor by complexing with it. The second mechanism considers the ionic species to be contained in inverse micelles of PTC, with a water core inside. A comprehensive experimental study involving measurement of interfacial tension, viscosity, water content by Karl-Fischer titration, static light scattering, H-1 NMR, and small-angle X-ray scattering is reported in this work to establish that the phase transfer catalyst tetraoctylammonium bromide transfers ions by complexing with them, instead of encapsulating them in inverse micelles. The findings have implications for particle synthesis in two-phase methods such as BSM and their modification to produce more monodispersed particles.

The ferroelectric system (1-x)PbZrO3-(x)Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 has been investigated as a function of composition, temperature, and electric field by x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, and ferroelectric measurements. Within the solubility limit (x similar to 0.25), the system evolves from an orthorhombic-antiferroelectric to rhombohedral-ferroelectric state through a phase coexistence region. The highest polarization was found not for the composition exhibiting a pure ferroelectric state, but for a composition x = 0.15 exhibiting ferroelectric + antiferroelectric phase coexistence close to the rhombohedral phase boundary. Electric poling of the equilibrium two-phase state led to irreversible enhancement in the rhombohedral phase fraction suggesting that the enhanced polarization is related to the enhanced polarizability of the lattice due to first order criticality as in ferroelectric-ferroelectric morphotropic phase boundary systems. Phase equilibria of the system Ca-Ta-O is established by equilibrating eleven samples at 1200 K for prolonged periods and phase identification in quenched samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Four ternary oxides are identified: CaTa4O11, CaTa2O6, Ca2Ta2O7 and Ca4Ta2O9. Isothermal section of the phase diagram is composed using the results. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides are measured in the temperature range from 975 to 1275 K employing solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells essentially measure the chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (Ta2O5 + CaTa4O11), (CaTa4O11 + CaTa2O6), (CaTa2O6 + Ca2Ta2O7), and (Ca2Ta2O7 + Ca4Ta2O9) of the pseudo-binary system CaO-Ta2O5. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the four ternary oxides from their component binary oxides Ta2O5 and CaO are given by: Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa4O11) (+/- 482)/J mol(-1) = -58644+21.497 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa2O6) (+/- 618)/J mol(-1) = -55122+21.893 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca2Ta2O7) (+/- 729)/J mol(-1) = -82562+31.843 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca4Ta2O9) (+/- 955)/J mol(-1) = -126598+48.859 (T/K) The Gibbs energy of formation of the four ternary compounds obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported in the literature. The thermodynamic data and phase diagram are used for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of calciothermic and electrochemical reduction of Ta2O5 to metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. For maximizing influence spread in a social network, given a certain budget on the number of seed nodes, we investigate the effects of selecting and activating the seed nodes in multiple phases. In particular, we formulate an appropriate objective function for two-phase influence maximization under the independent cascade model, investigate its properties, and propose algorithms for determining the seed nodes in the two phases. We also study the problem of determining an optimal budget-split and delay between the two phases.
