In the work underlying this thesis solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was evaluated as a passive sampling technique for organophosphate triesters in indoor air. These compounds are used on a large scale as flame-retarding and plastizicing additives in a variety of materials and products, and have proven to be common pollutants in indoor air. The main objective of this work was to develop an accurate method for measuring the volatile fraction. Such a method can be used in combination with active sampling to obtain information regarding the vapour/particulate distribution in different indoor environments. SPME was investigated under both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions and parameters associated with these different conditions were estimated. In Paper I, time-weighted average (TWA) SPME under dynamic conditions was investigated in order to obtain a fast air sampling method for organophosphate triesters. Among the investigated SPME coatings, the absorptive PDMS polymer had the highest affinity for the organophosphate triesters and was consequently used in all further work. Since the sampling rate is dependent on the agitation conditions, the linear airflow rates had to be carefully considered. Sampling periods as short as 1 hour were shown to be sufficient for measurements in the ng-μg m-3 range when using a PDMS 100-μm fibre and a linear flow rate above 7 cm s-1 over the fibre. SPME under equilibrium conditions is rather time-consuming, even under dynamic conditions, for slowly partitioning compounds such as organophosphate triesters. Nevertheless, this method has some significant advantages. For instance, the limit of detection is much lower compared to 1 h TWA sampling. Furthermore, the sampling time can be ignored as long as equilibrium has been attained. In Paper II, SPME under equilibrium conditions was investigated and evaluated for organophosphate triester vapours. Since temperature and humidity are closely associated with the distribution constant a simple study of the effect of these parameters was performed. The obtained distribution constants were used to determine the air levels in a common indoor environment. SPME and parallel active sampling on filters yielded similar results, indicating that the detected compounds were almost entirely associated with the vapour phase To apply dynamic SPME method in the field a sampler device, which enables controlled linear airflow rates to be applied, was constructed and evaluated (Paper III). This device was developed for application of SPME and active sampling in parallel. A GC/PICI-MS/MS method was developed and used in combination with active sampling of organophosphate triesters in indoor air (Paper IV). The combination of MS/MS and the soft ionization achieved with methanol as reagent gas yielded high selectivity and detection limits comparable to those provided by GC with nitrogen-phosphorus detection (NPD). The method limit of detection, when sampling 1.5 m3 of air, was in the range 0.1-1.4 ng m-3. In Paper V, the developed MS method was used in combination with SPME for indoor air measurements. The levels detected in the investigated indoor environments range from a few ng to μg m-3. Tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate was detected at a concentration as high as 7 μg m-3 in a newly rebuilt lecture room.

This thesis deals with the investigation of charge generation and recombination processes in three different polymer:fullerene photovoltaic blends by means of ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The first donor polymer, namely poly[N-11"-henicosanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT), is a mid-bandgap polymer, the other two materials are the low-bandgap donor polymers poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) (PCPDTBT) and poly[(4,4'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-4,7-diyl] (PSBTBT). Despite their broader absorption, the low-bandgap polymers do not show enhanced photovoltaic efficiencies compared to the mid-bandgap system.rnrnTransient absorption spectroscopy revealed that energetic disorder plays an important role in the photophysics of PCDTBT, and that in a blend with PCBM geminate losses are small. The photophysics of the low-bandgap system PCPDTBT were strongly altered by adding a high boiling point cosolvent to the polymer:fullerene blend due to a partial demixing of the materials. We observed an increase in device performance together with a reduction of geminate recombination upon addition of the cosolvent. By applying model-free multi-variate curve resolution to the spectroscopic data, we found that fast non-geminate recombination due to polymer triplet state formation is a limiting loss channel in the low-bandgap material system PCPDTBT, whereas in PSBTBT triplet formation has a smaller impact on device performance, and thus higher efficiencies are obtained.rn

The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene (St) was conducted in the presence of varying equivalence (eq) of hexafluorobenzene (HFB) and octafluorotoluene (OFT) to probe the effects of pi-pi stacking on the rate of the polymerization and on the tacticity of the resulting polystyrene (PSt). The extent of the pi-pi stacking interaction between HFB/OFT and the terminal polystyrenic phenyl group was also investigated as a function of solvent, both non-aromatic solvents (THF and hexanes) and aromatic solvents (benzene and toluene). In all cases the presence of HFB or OFT resulted in a decrease in monomer conversion indicating a reduction in the rate of the polymerization with greater retardation of the rate with increase eq of HFB or OFT (0.5 eq to 1 eq HFB/OFT compared to St). Additionally, when aromatic solvents were used instead of non-aromatic solvents the effect of the HFB/OFT on the rate was minimized, consistent with the aromatic solvent competitively interacting with the HFB/OFT. The effects of temperature and ligand strength on the ATRP of St in the presence of HFB were also probed. It was found that when using N,N,N’,N’,N’’-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the ligand the effects of HFB at 38o were the same as at 86oC. When tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-amine (Me6TREN) was used as the ligand at 38o there was a decrease in monomer conversion similar to the analogous PMDETA reaction. When the polymerization was conducted at 86oC there was no effect on the monomer conversion with HFB present compared to when HFB was absent. To investigate the pi-pi stacking effect even further, the reverse pi-pi stacking system was observed by conducting the ATRP of pentafluorostyrene (PFSt) in the presence of varying eq of benzene and toluene, which in both cases resulted in an increase in monomer conversion compared to when benzene or toluene were absent; in summary the rate of the ATRP of PFSt increases when benzene or toluene waas present in the reaction. The pi-pi stacking interaction between the HFB/OFT and the dormant alkyl bromide of the polymer chain was verified by 1H-NMR with 1-bromoethylbenzene as the alkyl bromide. Also verified by 1H-NMR was the interaction between HFB/OFT and St and the interaction between PFSt and benzene. In all 1H-NMR spectra a perturbation in the aromatic and/or vinyl peaks was observed when the pi-pi stacking agent was present compared to when it was absent. The tacticity of the PSt formed in the presence of 1 eq of HFB was compared to the PSt formed in the absence of HFB by observing the C1 signal in their 13C-NMR spectra, but no change in shape or chemical shift of the signal was observed indicating that there was no change in tacticity.

This publication presents results of microbiological and biogeochemical studies in the White Sea. Material was obtained during a series of expeditions in 1999-2002. The studies were carried out in the open part of the White Sea, in the Onega, Dvina and Kandalaksha Bays, as well as in the intertidal zone of the Kandalaksha Bay. Quantitative characteristics of activity of microbial processes in waters and bottom sediments of the White Sea were obtained. The total number of bacteria was equal to 150000-800000 cells/ml, and intensity of dark CO2 assimilation was equal to 0.9-17 µg C/l/day. Bacterial sulfate reduction was equal to 3-150 mg S/m**2/day, and methane formation and oxidation was equal to 13-6840 and 20-14650 µl CH4/m**2/day, respectively. Extremely high values of intensity of all principal microbial processes were found in intertidal sediments rich in organic matter: under decomposing macrophytes, in local pits at the lower intertidal boundary, and in the mouth of a freshwater brook. Average hydrogen sulfide production in highly productive intertidal sediments was 1950-4300 mg S/m**2/day, methane production was 0.5-8.7 ml CH4/m**2/day, and intensity of methane oxidation was up to 17.5 ml CH4/m**2/day. Calculations performed with account for areas occupied by microlandscapes of increased productivity showed that diurnal production of H2S and CH4 per 1 km**2 of the intertidal zone (August) was estimated as 60.8-202 kg S/km**2/day and 192-300 l CH4/km**2/day, respectively.

A shallow gas depth-contour map covering the Skagerrak-western Baltic Sea region has been constructed using a relatively dense grid of existing shallow seismic lines. The digital map is stored as an ESRI shape file in order to facilitate comparison with other data from the region. Free gas usually occurs in mud and sandy mud but is observed only when sediment thickness exceeds a certain threshold value, depending on the water depth of the area in question. Gassy sediments exist at all water depths from approx. 20 m in the coastal waters of the Kattegat to 360 m in the Skagerrak. In spite of the large difference in water depths, the depth of free gas below seabed varies only little within the region, indicating a relatively fast movement of methane in the gas phase towards the seabed compared to the rate of diffusion of dissolved methane. Seeps of old microbial methane occur in the northern Kattegat where a relatively thin cover of sandy sediments exists over shallow, glacially deformed Pleistocene marine sediments. Previous estimates of total methane escape from the area may be correct but the extrapolation of local methane seepage rate data to much larger areas on the continental shelf is probably not justified. Preliminary data on porewater chemistry were compared with the free gas depth contours in the Aarhus Bay area, which occasionally suffers from oxygen deficiency, in order to examine if acoustic gas mapping may be used for monitoring the condition of the bay.

Different types of seep carbonates were recovered from the 'Kouilou pockmarks' on the Congo deep-sea fan in approximately 3100 m water depth. The carbonate aggregates are represented by pyritiferous nodules, crusts and slabs, tubes, and filled molds. The latter are interpreted to represent casts of former burrows of bivalves and holothurians. The nodules consisting of high-Mg-calcite apparently formed deeper within the sediments than the predominantly aragonitic crusts and slabs. Nodule formation was caused by anaerobic oxidation of methane dominantly involving archaea of the phylogenetic ANME-1 group, whereas aragonitic crusts resulted from the activity of archaea of the ANME-2 cluster. Evidence for this correlation is based on the distribution of specific biomarkers in the two types of carbonate aggregates, showing higher hydroxyarchaeol to archaeol ratios in the crusts as opposed to nodules. Formation of crusts closer to the seafloor than nodules is indicated by higher carbonate contents of crusts, probably reflecting higher porosities of the host sediment during carbonate formation. This finding is supported by lower d18O values of crusts, agreeing with precipitation from pore waters similar in composition to seawater. The aragonitic mineralogy of the crusts is also in accord with precipitation from sulfate-rich pore waters similar to seawater. Moreover, the interpretation regarding the relative depth of formation of crusts and nodules agrees with the commonly observed pattern that ANME-1 archaea tend to occur deeper in the sediment than members of the ANME-2 group. Methane represents the predominant carbon source of all carbonates (d13C values as low as -58.9 per mil V-PDB) and the encrusted archaeal biomarkers (d13C values as low as -140 per mil V-PDB). Oxygen isotope values of some nodular carbonates, ranging from + 3.9 to + 5.1per mil V-PDB, are too high for precipitation in equilibrium with seawater, probably reflecting the destabilization of gas hydrates, which are particularly abundant at the Kouilou pockmarks.

Some intermediates in the reduction of O2 to water by cytochrome-c oxidase have been characterized by optical, Raman, and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The so-called "peroxy" (P) and "ferryl" (F) forms of the enzyme, which have been considered to be intermediates of the oxygen reaction, can be generated when the oxidized enzyme reacts with H2O2, or when the two-electron reduced ("CO mixed-valence") enzyme reacts with O2. The structures as well as the overall redox states of P and F have recently been controversial. We show here, using tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) as a photoinducible reductant, that one-electron reduction of P yields F, and that one-electron reduction of F yields the oxidized enzyme. This confirms that the overall redox states of P and F differ from the oxidized enzyme by two and one electron equivalents, respectively. The structures of the P and F states are discussed.

The disulfide bonding pattern of the fourth and fifth epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains within the smallest active fragment of thrombomodulin have been determined. In previous work, this fragment was expressed and purified to homogeneity, and its cofactor activity, as measured by Kcat for thrombin activation of protein C, was the same as that for full-length thrombomodulin. CNBr cleavage at the single methionine in the connecting region between the domains and subsequent deglycosylation yielded the individual EGF-like domains. The disulfide bonds were mapped by partial reduction with tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine according to the method of Gray [Gray, W. R. (1993) Protein Sci. 2, 1732-1748], which provides unambiguous results. The disulfide bonding pattern of the fourth EGF-like domain was (1-3, 2-4, 5-6), which is the same as that found previously in EGF and in a synthetic version of the fourth EGF-like domain. Surprisingly, the disulfide bonding pattern of the fifth domain was (1-2, 3-4, 5-6), which is unlike that found in EGF or in any other EGF-like domain analyzed so far. This result is in line with an earlier observation that the (1-2, 3-4, 5-6) isomer bound to thrombin more tightly than the EGF-like (1-3, 2-4, 5-6) isomer. The observation that not all EGF-like domains have an EGF-like disulfide bonding pattern reveals an additional element of diversity in the structure of EGF-like domains.

The Amon mud volcano (MV), located at 1250 m water depth on the Nile Deep Sea Fan, is known for its active emission of methane and non-methane hydrocarbons into the hydrosphere. Previous investigations showed a low efficiency of hydrocarbon-degrading anaerobic microbial communities inhabiting the Amon MV center in the presence of sulphate and hydrocarbons in the seeping subsurface fluids. By comparing spatial and temporal patterns of in situ biogeochemical fluxes, temperature gradients, pore water composition and microbial activities over three years, we investigated why the activity of anaerobic hydrocarbon degraders can be low despite high energy supplies. We found that the central dome of the Amon MV, as well as a lateral mud flow at its base, showed signs of recent exposure of hot subsurface muds lacking active hydrocarbon degrading communities. In these highly disturbed areas, anaerobic degradation of methane was less than 2% of the methane flux. Rather high oxygen consumption rates compared to low sulphide production suggest a faster development of more rapidly growing aerobic hydrocarbon degraders in highly disturbed areas. In contrast, the more stabilized muds surrounding the central gas and fluid conduits hosted active anaerobic hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities. Furthermore, within three years, cell numbers and hydrocarbon degrading activity increased at the gas-seeping sites. The low microbial activity in the hydrocarbon-vented areas of Amon mud volcano is thus a consequence of kinetic limitations by heat and mud expulsion, whereas most of the outer mud volcano area is limited by hydrocarbon transport.

The synthesis of the hexadentate ligand 5,6-dimethyl-2,2,9,9-tetra(methyleneamine)-4,7-dithiadecane (1,2-Me(2)EtN(4)S(2)amp) is reported. The diastereiosomers were separated as cobalt(III) complexes using cation exchange chromatography. The rac and mesa isomers were characterized by NMR (C-13, H-1, Co-59), ESI-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Single crystals of [Co(rac-1,2-Me(2)EtN(4)S(2)amp)] Cl-2(ClO4) (.) 2H(2)O were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The low-temperature (11 K) absorption spectra of the complexes have been measured in Nafion films and from the observed positions of both spin-allowed (1)A(1g) --> T-1(1g) and (1)A(1g) --> T-1(2g) and spin forbidden (1)A(1g) --> T-3(2g) bands, octahedral ligand-field parameters (10Dq, B and C) were determined. These results, in conjunction with the Co-59 NMR data, are used to further explore the relationship between the Co-59 magnetogyric ratio (gamma(Co)) and the product of the nephelauxetic ratio and the wavelength of the (1)A(1g) --> T-1(1g) transition (beta(DeltaE)(-1)) for complexes of mixed donor nitrogen-thioether ligands. The search for orally effective drugs for the treatment of iron overload disorders is an important goal in improving the health of patients suffering diseases such as beta-thalassemia major. Herein, we report the syntheses and characterization of some new members of a series of N-aroyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine chelators (the H2IPH analogs). Both 1:1 and 1:2 Fe-III:L complexes were isolated and the crystal structures of Fe(HPPH)Cl-2, Fe(4BBPH)Cl-2, Fe(HAPH)(APH) and Fe(H3BBPH)(3BBPH) were determined (H2PPH=N,N'-bis-picolinoyl hydrazine; H(2)APH=N-4-aminobenzoyl-N'-picolinoyl hydrazine, H(2)3BBPH=N-3-bromobenzoyl-N'-picolinoylhydrazine and H(2)4BBPH=N-(4-bromobenzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine). In each case, a tridentate N,N,O coordination mode of each chelator with Fe was observed. The Fe-III complexes of these ligands have been synthesized and their structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization are reported. Five of these new chelators, namely H2BPH (N-(benzoyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)hydrazine), H2TPH (N-(2-thienyl)-N'-(picolinoyl)-hydrazine), H2PPH, H(2)3BBPH and H(2)4BBPH, showed high efficacy at mobilizing Fe-59 from cells and inhibiting Fe-59 uptake from the serum Fe transport protein, transferrin (Tf). Indeed, their activity was much greater than that found for the chelator in current clinical use, desferrioxamine (DFO), and similar to that observed for the orally active chelator, pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (H2PIH). The ability of the chelators to inhibit Fe-59 uptake could not be accounted for by direct chelation of Fe-59-Tf. The most effective chelators also showed low antiproliferative activity which was similar to or less than that observed with DFO, which is important in terms of their potential use as agents to treat Fe-overload disease.

Large-scale introduction of Organic Solar Cells (OSCs) onto the market is currently limited by their poor stability in light and air, factors present in normal working conditions for these devices. Thus, great efforts have to be undertaken to understand the photodegradation mechanisms of their organic materials in order to find solutions that mitigate these effects. This study reports on the elucidation of the photodegradation mechanisms occurring in a low bandgap polymer, namely, Si-PCPDTBT (poly[(4,4′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-5,5′-diyl]). Complementary analytical techniques (AFM, HS-SPME-GC-MS, UV-vis and IR spectroscopy) have been employed to monitor the modification of the chemical structure of the polymer upon photooxidative aging and the subsequent consequences on its architecture and nanomechanical properties. Furthermore, these different characterization techniques have been combined with a theoretical approach based on quantum chemistry to elucidate the evolution of the polymer alkyl side chains and backbone throughout exposure. Si-PCPDTBT is shown to be more stable against photooxidation than the commonly studied p-type polymers P3HT and PCDTBT, while modeling demonstrated the benefits of using silicon as a bridging atom in terms of photostability. Organic Solar Cells (OSCs) represent a photovoltaic technology with multiple interesting application properties. However, the establishment of this technology into the market is subject to the achievement of operational lifetimes appropriate to their application purposes. Thus, comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanisms occurring in OSCs is mandatory in both selecting more intrinsically stable components and/or device architectures and implementing strategies that mitigate the encountered stability issues. Inverted devices can suffer from mechanical stress and delamination at the interface between the active layer, e.g. poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM), and the hole transport layer, e.g. poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(p-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). This work proposes the incorporation of a thin adhesive interlayer, consisting of a diblock copolymer composed of a P3HT block and a thermally-triggerable, alkyl-protected PSS block. In this context, the synthesis of poly(neopentyl p-styrene sulfonate) (PNSS) with controlled molar mass and low dispersity (Ð ≤ 1.50) via Reversible Addition-Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerisation has been extensively studied. Subsequently, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was explored to characterise the thermal deprotection of P3HT-b-PNSS thin layers to yield amphiphilic P3HT-b-PSS, indicating that surface deprotection prior to thermal treatment could occur. Finally, structural variation of the alkyl protecting group in PSS allowed reducing the thermal treatment duration from 3 hours (P3HT-b-PNSS) to 45 minutes for the poly(isobutyl p-styrene sulfonate) (PiBSS) analogous copolymer. Another critical issue regarding the stability of OSCs is the sunlight-driven chemical degradation of the active layer. In the study herein, the combination of experimental techniques and theoretical calculations has allowed identification of the structural weaknesses of poly[(4,4’- bis(2-ethylhexyl) dithieno [3,2-b:2’,3’-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-5,5’-diyl], Si-PCPDTBT, upon photochemical treatment in air. Additionally, the study of the relative photodegradation rates in air of a series of polymers with systematically modified backbones and/or alkyl side chains has shown no direct correlation between chemical structure and stability. It is proposed instead that photostability is highly dependent on the crystalline character of the deposited films. Furthermore, it was verified that photostability of blends based on these polymers is dictated by the (de)stabilising effect that [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) has over each polymer. Finally, a multiscale analysis on the degradation of solar cells based on poly[4,4' bis(2- ethylhexyl) dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-[2,5 bis(3 tetradecylthiophen 2-yl)thiazole[5,4-d]thiazole)-1,8-diyl] and PCBM, indicated that by judicious selection of device layers, architectures, and encapsulation materials, operational lifetimes up to 3.3 years with no efficiency losses can be successfully achieved.

Chemical warfare agents continue to pose a global threat despite the efforts of the international community to prohibit their use in warfare. For this reason, improvement in the detection of these compounds remains of forensic interest. Protein adducts formed by the covalent modification of an electrophilic xenobiotic and a nucleophilic amino acid may provide a biomarker of exposure that is stable and specific to compounds of interest (such as chemical warfare agents), and have the capability to extend the window of detection further than the parent compound or circulating metabolites. This research investigated the formation of protein adducts of the nitrogen mustard chemical warfare agents mechlorethamine (HN-2) and tris(2-chloroethyl)amine (HN-3) to lysine and histidine residues found on the blood proteins hemoglobin and human serum albumin. Identified adducts were assessed for reproducibility and stability both in model peptide and whole protein assays. Specificity of these identified adducts was assessed using in vitro assays to metabolize common therapeutic drugs containing nitrogen mustard moieties. Results of the model peptide assays demonstrated that HN-2 and HN-3 were able to form stable adducts with lysine and histidine residues under physiological conditions. Results for whole protein assays identified three histidine adducts on hemoglobin, and three adducts (two lysine residues and one histidine residue) on human serum albumin that were previously unknown. These protein adducts were determined to be reproducible and stable at physiological conditions over a three-week analysis period. Results from the in vitro metabolic assays revealed that adducts formed by HN-2 and HN-3 are specific to these agents, as metabolized therapeutic drugs (chlorambucil, cyclophosphamide, and melphalan) did not form the same adducts on lysine or histidine residues as the previously identified adducts formed by HN-2 and HN-3. Results obtained from the model peptide and full protein work were enhanced by comparing experimental data to theoretical calculations for adduct formation, providing further confirmatory data. This project was successful in identifying and characterizing biomarkers of exposure to HN-2 and HN-3 that are specific and stable and which have the potential to be used for the forensic determination of exposure to these dangerous agents.

The first Air Chemistry Observatory at the German Antarctic station Georg von Neumayer (GvN) was operated for 10 years from 1982 to 1991. The focus of the established observational programme was on characterizing the physical properties and chemical composition of the aerosol, as well as on monitoring the changing trace gas composition of the background atmosphere, especially concerning greenhouse gases. The observatory was designed by the Institut für Umweltphysik, University of Heidelberg (UHEIIUP). The experiments were installed inside the bivouac lodge, mounted on a sledge and put upon a snow hill to prevent snow accumulation during blizzards. All experiments were under daily control and daily performance protocols were documented. A ventilated stainless steel inlet stack (total height about 3-4 m above the snow surface) with a 50% aerodynamic cut-off diameter around 7-10 µm at wind velocities between 4-10 m/s supplied all experiments with ambient air. Contamination free sampling was realized by several means: (i) The Air Chemistry Observatory was situated in a clean air area about 1500 m south of GvN. Due to the fact that northern wind directions are very rare, contamination from the base can be excluded for most of the time. (ii) The power supply (20 kW) is provided by a cable from the main station, thus no fuel-driven generator is operated in the very vicinity. (iii) Contamination-free sampling is controlled by the permanently recorded wind velocity, wind direction and by condensation particle concentration. Contamination was indicated if one of the following criteria were given: Wind direction within a 330°-30° sector, wind velocity <2.2 m/s or >17.5 m/s, or condensation particle concentrations >2500/cm**3 during summer, >800/cm**3 during spring/autumn and >400/cm**3 during winter. If one or a definable combination of these criteria were given, high volume aerosol sampling and part of the trace gas sampling were interrupted. Starting at 1982 through 1991-01-14 surface ozone was measured with an electrochemical concentration cell (ECC). Surface ozone mixing ratio are given in ppbv = parts per 10**9 by volume. The averaging time corresponds to the given time intervals in the data sheet. The accuracy of the values are better than ±1 ppbv and the detection limit is around 1.0 ppbv. Aerosols were sampled on two Whatman 541 cellulose filters in series and analyzed by ion chromatography at the UHEI-IUP. Generally, the sampling period was seven days but could be up to two weeks on occasion. The air flow was around 100 m**3/h and typically 10000-20000 m**3 of ambient air was forced through the filters for one sample. Concentration values are given in nanogram (ng) per 1 m**3 air at standard pressure and temperature (1013 mbar, 273.16 K). Uncertainties of the values were approximately ±10% to ±15% for the main components MSA, chloride, nitrate, sulfate and sodium, and between ±20% and ±30% for the minor species bromide, ammonium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
