Bilateral radiographic progression of the supero-lateral fragment of a bipartite- into a tripartite patella with unilateral symptoms. An 8 year old girl presented a bilateral bipartite patella Stage III as an incidental finding after fall on the flexed right knee. Serial radiographs two years later revealed a bilateral progression of the bipartite- into a tripartite patella with complaints only on the post-traumatic right side. Observation was opted as therapy. There was no correlation of symptoms and radiological findings of the fragmentation of the bipartite- into a tripartite patella. Therefore we conclude the etiology of a bilateral late appearance of a third ossification center.

Cord entanglement affects the majority of monoamniotic (MA) twins, accounting for the high proportion of intrauterine deaths of MA twins, and it is often present from early gestation. 3D ultrasound can be used to acquire volume data comprising information on umbilical colour Doppler flow, providing a very graphic depiction of cord entanglement. We have used 2D, "conventional" and a novel 3D display of colour Doppler ultrasound showing cord entanglement.

This tutorial review article is intended to provide a general guidance to a reader interested to learn about the methodologies to obtain accurate electron density mapping in molecules and crystalline solids, from theory or from experiment, and to carry out a sensible interpretation of the results, for chemical, biochemical or materials science applications. The review mainly focuses on X-ray diffraction techniques and refinement of experimental models, in particular multipolar models. Neutron diffraction, which was widely used in the past to fix accurate positions of atoms, is now used for more specific purposes. The review illustrates three principal analyses of the experimental or theoretical electron density, based on quantum chemical, semi-empirical or empirical interpretation schemes, such as the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, the semi-classical evaluation of interaction energies and the Hirshfeld analysis. In particular, it is shown that a simple topological analysis based on a partition of the electron density cannot alone reveal the whole nature of chemical bonding. More information based on the pair density is necessary. A connection between quantum mechanics and observable quantities is given in order to provide the physical grounds to explain the observations and to justify the interpretations.

The ability to generate entangled photon-pairs over a broad wavelength range opens the door to the simultaneous distribution of entanglement to multiple users of a network using a single source and wavelength-division multiplexing technologies. Here we show the design of a metropolitan optical network made of tree-type access networks where entangled photon-pairs are distributed to any pair of users, independently of their location. The resulting network improves the reach, number of users and capabilities of existing proposals. Moreover, it is made up of typical commercial components and uses the existing infrastructure, which allows for moderate deployment costs. Finally, we develop a channel plan and a network design that allow direct optical communications, quantum and classical, between any pair of users. Therefore, multiple quantum information technologies can make use of this network.

The ability to generate entangled photon pairs over a broad wavelength range opens the door to the simultaneous distribution of entanglement to multiple users in a network by using centralized sources and flexible wavelength-division multiplexing schemes. Here, we show the design of a metropolitan optical network consisting of tree-type access networks, whereby entangled photon pairs are distributed to any pair of users, independent of their location. The network is constructed employing commercial off-the-shelf components and uses the existing infrastructure, which allows for moderate deployment costs. We further develop a channel plan and a network-architecture design to provide a direct optical path between any pair of users; thus, allowing classical and one-way quantum communication, as well as entanglement distribution. This allows the simultaneous operation of multiple quantum information technologies. Finally, we present a more flexible backbone architecture that pushes away the load limitations of the original network design by extending its reach, number of users and capabilities.

New telecom wavelength sources of polarization entangled photon pairs allow the distribution of entanglement through metro-access networks using standard equipment. This is essential to ease the deployment of future applications that can profit from quantum entanglement, such as quantum cryptography.

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and tomato aspermy virus (TAV) belong to the Cucumovirus genus. They have a tripartite genome consisting of single-stranded RNAs, designated 1, 2, and 3. Previous studies have shown that viable pseudorecombinants could be created in vitro by reciprocal exchanges between CMV and TAV RNA 3, but exchanges of RNAs 1 and 2 were replication deficient. When we coinoculated CMV RNAs 2 and 3 along with TAV RNAs 1 and 2 onto Nicotiana benthamiana, a hybrid quadripartite virus appeared that consisted of TAV RNA 1, CMV RNAs 2 and 3, and a distinctive chimeric RNA originating from a recombination between CMV RNA 2 and the 3′-terminal 320 nucleotides of TAV RNA 2. This hybrid arose by means of segment reassortment and RNA recombination to produce an interspecific hybrid with the TAV helicase subunit and the CMV polymerase subunit. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the evolution of a new plant or animal virus strain containing an interspecific hybrid replicase complex.

We introduce a new class of generalized isotropic Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models with su(m+1) spin and long-range non-constant interactions, whose non-degenerate ground state is a Dicke state of su(m+1) type. We evaluate in closed form the reduced density matrix of a block of Lspins when the whole system is in its ground state, and study the corresponding von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies in the thermodynamic limit. We show that both of these entropies scale as a log L when L tends to infinity, where the coefficient a is equal to (m  −  k)/2 in the ground state phase with k vanishing magnon densities. In particular, our results show that none of these generalized Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models are critical, since when L-->∞ their Rényi entropy R_q becomes independent of the parameter q. We have also computed the Tsallis entanglement entropy of the ground state of these generalized su(m+1) Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models, finding that it can be made extensive by an appropriate choice of its parameter only when m-k≥3. Finally, in the su(3) case we construct in detail the phase diagram of the ground state in parameter space, showing that it is determined in a simple way by the weights of the fundamental representation of su(3). This is also true in the su(m+1) case; for instance, we prove that the region for which all the magnon densities are non-vanishing is an (m  +  1)-simplex in R^m whose vertices are the weights of the fundamental representation of su(m+1).
