Physicians and scientists use a broad spectrum of terms to classify contrast media (CM)-induced adverse reactions. In particular, the designation of hypersensitivity reactions is quite varied. Consequently, comparisons of different papers dealing with this subject are difficult or even impossible. Moreover, general descriptions may lead to problems in understanding reactions in patients with a history of adverse CM-reactions, and in efficiently managing these patients. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to suggest an easy system to clearly classify these reactions. The proposed three-step systems (3SS) is built up as follows: step 1 exactly describes the clinical features, including their severity; step 2 categorizes the time point of the onset (immediate or nonimmediate); and step 3 generally classifies the reaction (hypersensitivity or nonhypersensitivity reaction). The 3SS may facilitate better understanding of the clinical manifestations of adverse CM reactions and may support the prevention of these reactions on the basis of personalized medicine approaches.

Passive states of quantum systems are states from which no system energy can be extracted by any cyclic (unitary) process. Gibbs states of all temperatures are passive. Strong local (SL) passive states are defined to allow any general quantum operation, but the operation is required to be local, being applied only to a specific subsystem. Any mixture of eigenstates in a system-dependent neighborhood of a nondegenerate entangled ground state is found to be SL passive. In particular, Gibbs states are SL passive with respect to a subsystem only at or below a critical system-dependent temperature. SL passivity is associated in many-body systems with the presence of ground state entanglement in a way suggestive of collective quantum phenomena such as quantum phase transitions, superconductivity, and the quantum Hall effect. The presence of SL passivity is detailed for some simple spin systems where it is found that SL passivity is neither confined to systems of only a few particles nor limited to the near vicinity of the ground state.

Species belonging to the Culicoides complexes (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae), obsoletus and pulicaris, in Switzerland, are potential vectors of both bluetongue virus (BTV) and African horse sickness virus (AHSV). The epidemic of BTV in 2006 and 2007 in Europe has highlighted the risk of introduction and spread of vector-borne diseases in previously non-endemic areas. As a measure of prevention, as part of an integrated control programme in the event of an outbreak of African horse sickness (AHS), it is of utmost importance to prevent, or substantially reduce, contact between horses and Culicoides. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of three protection systems, net, fan, repellent, or combinations thereof, with regard to their potential to reduce contact between horses and Culicoides. Three different equine housing systems, including individual boxes (BX), group housing systems (GR), and individual boxes with permanently accessible paddock (BP) were used. The efficacy of the protection systems were evaluated by comparing the total number counts of collected female Culicoides, of non-blood-fed and blood-fed Culicoides, respectively, with UV black light traps. The study was conducted over 3 summer months during 2012 and 2013 each and focused on the efficacy and practicality of the protection systems. The repellent was tested in 2012 only and not further investigated in 2013, as it showed no significant effect in reducing Culicoides collected in the light traps. Net protection system provided the best overall protection for the total number of female Culicoides, non-blood-fed and blood-fed Culicoides in all tested housing systems. The net, with a pore size of 0.1825 mm(2), reduced the total number of Culicoides collected in the housing systems BP, GR and BX by 98%, 85% and 67%, respectively. However, in the GR housing system, no significant difference between the effectiveness of the fan and the net were determined for any of the three Culicoides categories. The results of the present study demonstrated that horse owners can substantially reduce their horses' exposure to Culicoides, by using net protection in the housing systems BX, BP and GR. In GR housing systems, protection against Culicoides using a fan is also recommended.

This paper studies the energy consumption and subsequent CO2 emissions of road highway transportation under three toll systems in Spain for four categories of vehicles: cars, vans, buses and articulated trucks. The influence of toll systems is tested for a section of AP-41 highway between Toledo and Madrid. One system is free flow, other is traditional stop and go and the last toll system operates with an electronic toll collection (ETC) technology. Energy consumption and CO2 emissions were found to be closely related to vehicle mass, wind exposure, engine efficiency and acceleration rate. These parameters affect, directly or indirectly, the external forces which determine the energy consumption. Reducing the magnitude of these forces through an appropriate toll management is an important way of improving the energy performance of vehicles. The type of toll system used can have a major influence on the energy efficiency of highway transportation and therefore it is necessary to consider free flow.

En este trabajo se ha estudiado el efecto de la composición química corporal, estimada mediante el método de impedancia bioeléctrica (BIA) en la primera y segunda inseminación artificial (IA), sobre la fertilidad y la prolificidad de conejas primíparas. Se utilizaron los datos de 137 conejas procedentes de dos granjas que utilizaban dos genéticas distintas (UPV e Hyplus) y tres ritmos reproductivos (R4: inseminación a los 4 días tras el parto y destete a los 28 días, R11: inseminación a los 11 días postparto y destete a 35 días y R14: inseminación a los 14 días tras el parto y destete a los 42 días). La fertilidad media observada en el segundo parto fue de un 56,2% y el porcentaje de nacidos vivos, sobre los nacidos totales, fue de un 87,5%, no encontrándose diferencias entre los ritmos utilizados. El aumento de la proporción de proteína corporal, grasa y energía en la primera IA tuvieron un efecto positivo (P=0,007; P=0,03 y P<0,001, respectivamente) sobre la fertilidad del segundo parto. Igualmente, un mayor contenido en grasa (P<0,001) y energía (P<0,001) en la segunda IA también incrementaron la fertilidad del segundo parto. El incremento del ratio proteína/energía corporal de las conejas, determinado en las dos IA, tuvo un efecto negativo sobre la fertilidad en el segundo parto (P<0,001), observándose mejores resultados en conejas con 12 g proteína/MJ respecto a otras con valores superiores. El porcentaje de nacidos vivos (P<0,001), sobre los nacidos totales, aumentó con la proporción de proteína de las conejas en el momento de la segunda IA, pero esta última no tuvo efecto sobre la fertilidad. This study evaluated the effect of chemical body composition at first and second artificial inseminations (AI), determined by bioelectric impedance technique (BIA), on fertility and prolificacy of primiparous rabbit does. Data of 137 does from two farms using two different genetics (UPV and Hyplus) and three breeding systems were analyzed. Fertility was 56.2 % and the percentage of kits born alive over total born was 87.5 %. Breeding system had no effect on fertility or the percentage of kits born alive. Higher body protein, fat and energy of the rabbit doe at first artificial insemination (AI) increased the fertility in the second parity (P=0.007, P=0.03 and P<0.001 respectively). Fat and energy content of the doe at the second AI affected positively fertility in the second parity (P<0.001 and P<0.001 respectively), while protein influenced positively only prolificacy (P<0.001). The increase of the ratio protein/energy in both AI moments had a negative influence on fertility in the second parity (P<0.001), rabbit does with 12 g protein/MJ showed a higher fertility than those with higher values

The relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation is used to describe the 3He(e, e′ p)2H process. We describe the 3He nucleus within the adiabatic hyperspherical expansion method with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. The overlap between the 3He and the deuteron wave functions can be accurately computed from a three-body calculation. The nucleons are described by solutions of the Dirac equation with scalar and vector (S–V) potentials. The wave function of the outgoing proton is obtained by solving the Dirac equation with a S–V optical potential fitted to elastic proton scattering data on the residual nucleus. Within this theoretical framework, we compute the cross section of the reaction and other observables like the transverse-longitudinal asymmetry, and compare them with the available experimental data measured at JLab.

En las últimas décadas el aumento de la velocidad y la disminución del peso de los vehículos ferroviarios de alta velocidad ha provocado que aumente su riesgo de vuelco. Además, las exigencias de los trazados de las líneas exige en ocasiones la construcción de viaductos muy altos situados en zonas expuestas a fuertes vientos. Esta combinación puede poner en peligro la seguridad de la circulación. En esta tesis doctoral se estudian los efectos dinámicos que aparecen en los vehículos ferroviarios cuando circulan sobre viaductos en presencia de vientos transversales. Para ello se han desarrollado e implementado una serie de modelos numéricos que permiten estudiar estos efectos de una forma realista y general. Los modelos desarrollados permiten analizar la interacción dinámica tridimensional tren-estructura, formulada mediante coordenadas absolutas en un sistema de referencia inercial, en un contexto de elementos _nitos no lineales. Mediante estos modelos se pueden estudiar de forma realista casos extremos como el vuelco o descarrilamiento de los vehículos. Han sido implementados en Abaqus, utilizando sus capacidades para resolver sistemas multi-cuerpo para el vehículo y elementos finitos para la estructura. La interacción entre el vehículo y la estructura se establece a través del contacto entre rueda y carril. Para ello, se han desarrollado una restricción, que permite establecer la relación cinemática entre el eje ferroviario y la vía, teniendo en cuenta los posibles defectos geométricos de la vía; y un modelo de contacto rueda-carril para establecer la interacción entre el vehículo y la estructura. Las principales características del modelo de contacto son: considera la geometría real de ambos cuerpos de forma tridimensional; permite resolver situaciones en las que el contacto entre rueda y carril se da en más de una zona a la vez; y permite utilizar distintas formulaciones para el cálculo de la tensión tangencial entre ambos cuerpos. Además, se ha desarrollado una metodología para determinar, a partir de formulaciones estocásticas, las historias temporales de cargas aerodinámicas debidas al viento turbulento en estructuras grandes y con pilas altas y flexibles. Esta metodología tiene cuenta la variabilidad espacial de la velocidad de viento, considerando la correlación entre los distintos puntos; considera las componentes de la velocidad del viento en tres dimensiones; y permite el cálculo de la velocidad de viento incidente sobre los vehículos que atraviesan la estructura. La metodología desarrollada en este trabajo ha sido implementada, validada y se ha aplicado a un caso concreto en el que se ha estudiado la respuesta de un tren de alta velocidad, similar al Siemens Velaro, circulando sobre el viaducto del río Ulla en presencia viento cruzado. En este estudio se ha analizado la seguridad y el confort de la circulación y la respuesta dinámica de la estructura cuando el tren cruza el viaducto. During the last decades the increase of the speed and the reduction of the weight of high-speed railway vehicles has led to a rise of the overturn risk. In addition, the design requests of the railway lines require some times the construction of very tall viaducts in strong wind areas. This combination may endanger the traffic safety. In this doctoral thesis the dynamic effects that appear in the railway vehicles when crossing viaducts under strong winds are studied. For this purpose it has been developed and implemented numerical models for studying these effects in a realistic and general way. The developed models allow to analyze the train-structure three-dimensional dynamic interaction, that is formulated by using absolute coordinates in an inertial reference frame within a non-linear finite element framework. By means of these models it is possible to study in a realistic way extreme situations such vehicle overturn or derailment. They have been implemented for Abaqus, by using its capabilities for solving multi-body systems for the vehicle and finite elements for the structure. The interaction between the vehicle and the structure is established through the wheel-rail contact. For this purpose, a constraint has been developed. It allows to establish the kinematic relationship between the railway wheelset and the track, taking into account the track irregularities. In addition, a wheel-rail contact model for establishing the interaction of the vehicle and the structure has been developed. El objetivo de esta Tesis es presentar un método eficiente para la evaluación de sistemas multi-cuerpo con elementos flexibles con pequeñas deformaciones, basado en métodos topológicos para la simulación de sistemas tan complejos como los que se utilizan en la práctica y en tiempo real o próximo al real. Se ha puesto un especial énfasis en la resolución eficiente de aquellos aspectos que conllevan mayor coste computacional, tales como la evaluación de las ecuaciones dinámicas y el cálculo de los términos de inercia. Las ecuaciones dinámicas se establecen en función de las variables independientes del sistema, y la integración de las mismas se realiza mediante formulaciones implícitas de index-3. Esta Tesis se articula en seis Capítulos. En el Capítulo 1 se realiza una revisión bibliográfica de la simulación de sistemas flexibles y los métodos más relevantes de integración de las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento. Asimismo, se presentan los objetivos de esta Tesis. En el Capítulo 2 se presenta un método semi-recursivo para la evaluación de las ecuaciones de los sistemas multi-cuerpo con elementos flexibles basado en formulaciones topológicas y síntesis modal. Esta Tesis determina la posición de cada punto del cuerpo flexible en función de un sistema de referencia flotante que se mueve con dicho cuerpo y de las amplitudes de ciertos modos de deformación calculados a partir de un mallado obtenido mediante el Método de Elementos Finitos. Se presta especial atención en las condiciones de contorno que se han de tener en cuenta a la hora de establecer las variables que definen la deformación del cuerpo flexible. El Capítulo 3 se centra en la evaluación de los términos de inercia de los sistemas flexibles que generalmente conllevan un alto coste computacional. Se presenta un método que permite el cálculo de dichos términos basado en el uso de 24 matrices constantes que pueden ser calculadas previamente al proceso de integración. Estas matrices permiten evaluar la matriz de masas y el vector de fuerzas de inercia dependientes de la velocidad sin que sea necesario evaluar la posición deformada de todos los puntos del cuerpo flexible. Se realiza un análisis pormenorizado de dichas matrices con el objetivo de optimizar su cálculo estableciendo aproximaciones que permitan reducir el número de dichos términos y optimizar aún más su evaluación. Se analizan dos posibles simplificaciones: la primera utiliza una discretización no-consistente basada en elementos finitos en los que se definen únicamente los desplazamientos axiales de los nodos; en la segunda propuesta se hace uso de una matriz de masas concentradas (Lumped Mass). Basándose en la formulación presentada, el Capítulo 4 aborda la integración eficiente de las ecuaciones dinámicas. Se presenta un método iterativo para la integración con fórmulas de index-3 basado en la proyección de las ecuaciones dinámicas según las variables independientes del sistema multi-cuerpo. El cálculo del residuo del sistema de ecuaciones no lineales que se ha de resolver de modo iterativo se realiza mediante un proceso recursivo muy eficiente que aprovecha la estructura topológica del sistema. Se analizan tres formas de evaluar la matriz tangente del citado sistema no lineal: evaluación aproximada, numérica y recursiva. El método de integración presentado permite el uso de distintas fórmulas. En esta Tesis se analizan la Regla Trapezoidal, la fórmula BDF de segundo orden y un método híbrido TR-BDF2. Para este último caso se presenta un algoritmo de paso variable. En el Capítulo 5 plantea la implementación del método propuesto en un programa general de simulación de mecanismos que permita la resolución de cualquier sistema multi-cuerpo definiéndolo mediante un fichero de datos. La implementación de este programa se ha realizado tanto en C++ como en Java. Se muestran los resultados de las formulaciones presentadas en esta Tesis mediante la simulación de cuatro ejemplos de distinta complejidad. Mediante análisis concretos se comparan la formulación presentada con otras existentes. También se analiza el efecto del lenguaje de programación utilizado en la implementación y los efectos de las posibles simplificaciones planteadas. Por último, el Capítulo 6 resume las principales conclusiones alcanzadas en la Tesis y las futuras líneas de investigación que con ella se abren. ABSTRACT This Thesis presents an efficient method for solving the forward dynamics of a multi-body sys-tem formed by rigid and flexible bodies with small strains for real-time simulation of real-life models. It is based on topological formulations. The presented work focuses on the efficient solution of the most time-consuming tasks of the simulation process, such as the numerical integration of the motion differential equations and in particular the evaluation of the inertia terms corresponding to the flexible bodies. The dynamic equations are formulated in terms of independent variables of the muti-body system, and they are integrated by means of implicit index-3 formulae. The Thesis is arranged in six chapters. Chapter 1 presents a review of the most relevant and recent contributions related to the modelization of flexible multi-body systems and the integration of the corresponding dynamic equations. The main objectives of the Thesis are also presented in detail. Chapter 2 presents a semi-recursive method for solving the equations of a multi-body system with flexible bodies based on topological formulations and modal synthesis. This Thesis uses the floating frame approach and the modal amplitudes to define the position of any point at the flexible body. These modal deformed shapes are obtained by means of the Finite Element Method. Particular attention has been taken to the boundary conditions used to define the deformation of the flexible bodies. Chapter 3 focuses on the evaluation of the inertia terms, which is usually a very time-consuming task. A new method based on the use of 24 constant matrices is presented. These matrices are evaluated during the set-up step, before the integration process. They allow the calculation of the inertia terms in terms of the position and orientation of the local coordinate system and the deformation variables, and there is no need to evaluate the position and velocities of all the nodes of the FEM mesh. A deep analysis of the inertia terms is performed in order to optimize the evaluation process, reducing both the terms used and the number of arithmetic operations. Two possible simplifications are presented: the first one uses a non-consistent approach in order to define the inertia terms respect to the Cartesian coordinates of the FEM mesh, rejecting those corresponding to the angular rotations; the second approach makes use of lumped mass matrices. Based on the previously presented formulation, Chapter 4 is focused on the numerical integration of the motion differential equations. A new predictor-corrector method based on index-3 formulae and on the use of multi-body independent variables is presented. The evaluation of the dynamic equations in a new time step needs the solution of a set on nonlinear equations by a Newton-Raphson iterative process. The computation of the corresponding residual vector is performed efficiently by taking advantage of the system’s topological structure. Three methods to compute the tangent matrix are presented: an approximated evaluation that considers only the most relevant terms, a numerical approach based on finite differences and a recursive method that uses the topological structure. The method presented for integrating the dynamic equations can use a variety of integration formulae. This Thesis analyses the use of the trapezoidal rule, the 2nd order BDF formula and the hybrid TR-BDF2 method. A variable-time step strategy is presented for the last one. Chapter 5 describes the implementation of the proposed method in a general purpose pro-gram for solving any multibody defined by a data file. This program is implemented both in C++ and Java. Four examples are used to check the validity of the formulation and to compare this method with other methods commonly used to solve the dynamic equations of multi-body systems containing flexible bodies. The efficiency of the programming methodology used and the effect of the possible simplifications proposed are also analyzed. Chapter 6 summarizes the main Conclusions obtained in this Thesis and the new lines of research that have been opened.

The solubility, density, refractive index, and viscosity data for the ethylene glycol + CsBr + H2O, 1,2-propanediol + CsBr + H2O, and glycerin + CsBr + H2O ternary systems have been determined at (288.15, 298.15, and 308.15) K. In all cases, the solubility of CsBr in aqueous solutions was decreased significantly due to the presence of polyhydric alcohol. The liquid–solid equilibrium experimental data were correlated using the NRTL (nonrandom two-liquid) activity coefficient model, considering nondissociation of the dissolved salt in the liquid phase, and new interaction parameters were estimated. The mean deviations between calculated and experimental compositions were low, showing the good descriptive quality and applicability of the NRTL model. The refractive indices, densities, and viscosities for the unsaturated solutions of the three ternary systems have also been measured at three temperatures. Values for all of the properties were correlated with the salt concentrations and proportions of polyhydric alcohol in the solutions.

The social processes involved in engaging small groups of 3-15 managers in their sharing, organising, acquiring, creating and using knowledge can be supported with software and facilitator assistance. This paper introduces three such systems that we have used as facilitators to support groups of managers in their social process of decision-making by managing knowledge during face-to-face meetings. The systems include Compendium, Group Explorer (with Decision Explorer) and V*I*S*A. We review these systems for group knowledge management where the aim is for better decision-making, and discuss the principles of deploying each in a group meeting. © 2006 Operational Research Society Ltd. The work presented in this thesis describes an investigation into the production and properties of thin amorphous C films, with and without Cr doping, as a low wear / friction coating applicable to MEMS and other micro- and nano-engineering applications. Firstly, an assessment was made of the available testing techniques. Secondly, the optimised test methods were applied to a series of sputtered films of thickness 10 - 2000 nm in order to: (i) investigate the effect of thickness on the properties of coatingslcoating process (ii) investigate fundamental tribology at the nano-scale and (iii) provide a starting point for nanotribological coating optimisation at ultra low thickness. The use of XPS was investigated for the determination of Sp3/Sp2 carbon bonding. Under C 1s peak analysis, significant errors were identified and this was attributed to the absence of sufficient instrument resolution to guide the component peak structure (even with a high resolution instrument). A simple peak width analysis and correlation work with C KLL D value confirmed the errors. The use of XPS for Sp3/Sp2 was therefore limited to initial tentative estimations. Nanoindentation was shown to provide consistent hardness and reduced modulus results with depth (to < 7nm) when replicate data was suitably statistically processed. No significant pile-up or cracking of the films was identified under nanoindentation. Nanowear experimentation by multiple nanoscratching provided some useful information, however the conditions of test were very different to those expect for MEMS and micro- / nano-engineering systems. A novel 'sample oscillated nanoindentation' system was developed for testing nanowear under more relevant conditions. The films were produced in an industrial production coating line. In order to maximise the available information and to take account of uncontrolled process variation a statistical design of experiment procedure was used to investigate the effect of four key process control parameters. Cr doping was the most significant control parameter at all thicknesses tested and produced a softening effect and thus increased nanowear. Substrate bias voltage was also a significant parameter and produced hardening and a wear reducing effect at all thicknesses tested. The use of a Cr adhesion layer produced beneficial results at 150 nm thickness, but was ineffective at 50 nm. Argon flow to the coating chamber produced a complex effect. All effects reduced significantly with reducing film thickness. Classic fretting wear was produced at low amplitude under nanowear testing. Reciprocating sliding was produced at higher amplitude which generated three body abrasive wear and this was generally consistent with the Archard model. Specific wear rates were very low (typically 10-16 - 10-18 m3N-1m-1). Wear rates reduced exponentially with reduced film thickness and below (approx.) 20 nm, thickness was identified as the most important control of wear.

I proposed the study of two distinct aspects of Ten-Eleven Translocation 2 (TET2) protein for understanding specific functions in different body systems. In Part I, I characterized the molecular mechanisms of Tet2 in the hematological system. As the second member of Ten-Eleven Translocation protein family, TET2 is frequently mutated in leukemic patients. Previous studies have shown that the TET2 mutations frequently occur in 20% myelodysplastic syndrome/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN), 10% T-cell lymphoma leukemia and 2% B-cell lymphoma leukemia. Genetic mouse models also display distinct phenotypes of various types of hematological malignancies. I performed 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells to determine whether the deletion of Tet2 can affect the abundance of 5hmC at myeloid, T-cell and B-cell specific gene transcription start sites, which ultimately result in various hematological malignancies. Subsequent Exome sequencing (Exome-Seq) showed that disease-specific genes are mutated in different types of tumors, which suggests that TET2 may protect the genome from being mutated. The direct interaction between TET2 and Mutator S Homolog 6 (MSH6) protein suggests TET2 is involved in DNA mismatch repair. Finally, in vivo mismatch repair studies show that the loss of Tet2 causes a mutator phenotype. Taken together, my data indicate that TET2 binds to MSH6 to protect genome integrity. In Part II, I intended to better understand the role of Tet2 in the nervous system. 5-hydroxymethylcytosine regulates epigenetic modification during neurodevelopment and aging. Thus, Tet2 may play a critical role in regulating adult neurogenesis. To examine the physiological significance of Tet2 in the nervous system, I first showed that the deletion of Tet2 reduces the 5hmC levels in neural stem cells. Mice lacking Tet2 show abnormal hippocampal neurogenesis along with 5hmC alternations at different gene promoters and corresponding gene expression downregulation. Through the luciferase reporter assay, two neural factors Neurogenic differentiation 1 (NeuroD1) and Glial fibrillary acidic protein (Gfap) were down-regulated in Tet2 knockout cells. My results suggest that Tet2 regulates neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation in adult brain.

Concept maps are a technique used to obtain a visual representation of a person's ideas about a concept or a set of related concepts. Specifically, in this paper, through a qualitative methodology, we analyze the concept maps proposed by 52 groups of teacher training students in order to find out the characteristics of the maps and the degree of adequacy of the contents with regard to the teaching of human nutrition in the 3rd cycle of primary education. The participants were enrolled in the Teacher Training Degree majoring in Primary Education, and the data collection was carried out through a training activity under the theme of what to teach about Science in Primary School? The results show that the maps are a useful tool for working in teacher education as they allow organizing, synthesizing, and communicating what students know. Moreover, through this work, it has been possible to see that future teachers have acceptable skills for representing the concepts/ideas in a concept map, although the level of adequacy of concepts/ideas about human nutrition and its relations is usually medium or low. These results are a wake-up call for teacher training, both initial and ongoing, because they shows the inability to change priorities as far as the selection of content is concerned.

We hypothesize that at least some of the recently discovered class of calcium-rich gap transients are tidal detonation events of white dwarfs (WDs) by black holes (BHs) or possibly neutron stars. We show that the properties of the calcium-rich gap transients agree well with the predictions of the tidal detonation model. Under the predictions of this model, we use a follow-up X-ray observation of one of these transients, SN 2012hn, to place weak upper limits on the detonator mass of this system that include all intermediate-mass BHs (IMBHs). As these transients are preferentially in the stellar haloes of galaxies, we discuss the possibility that these transients are tidal detonations of WDs caused by random flyby encounters with IMBHs in dwarf galaxies or globular clusters. This possibility has been already suggested in the literature but without connection to the calcium-rich gap transients. In order for the random flyby cross-section to be high enough, these events would have to be occurring inside these dense stellar associations. However, there is a lack of evidence for IMBHs in these systems, and recent observations have ruled out all but the very faintest dwarf galaxies and globular clusters for a few of these transients. Another possibility is that these are tidal detonations caused by three-body interactions, where a WD is perturbed towards the detonator in isolated multiple star systems. We highlight a number of ways this could occur, even in lower mass systems with stellar-mass BHs or neutron stars. Finally, we outline several new observational tests of this scenario, which are feasible with current instrumentation.
