An exact three-dimensional elasticity solution has been obtained for an infinitely long, thick transversely isotropic circular cylindrical shell panel, simply supported along the longitudinal edges and subjected to a radial patch load. Using a set of three displacement functions, the boundary value problem is reduced to Bessel's differential equation. Numerical results are presented for different thickness to mean radius ratios and semicentral angles of the shell panel. Classical and first-order shear deformation orthotropic shell theories have been examined in comparison with the present elasticity solution.

Thick films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta fabricated on polycrystalline Ba2RETaO6 (where RE= Pr, Nd, Eu, and Dy) substrates by dip-coating and partial melting techniques are textured and c-axis oriented, showing predominantly (00l) orientation. All the thick films show a superconducting zero resistance transition of 90 K. SEM studies clearly indicate platelike and needlelike grain growth over a wide area of the thick films. The values of the critical current density for these thick films are similar to 10(4) A/cm(2) at 77 K as determined by the nonresonant R.F. absorption method. Various processing conditions that affect the critical current density of thick films are also discussed.

Oxidative damage, through increased production of free radicals, is believed to be involved in UV-induced cataractogenesis (eye lens opacification). The possibility of UVB radiation causing damage to important lenticular enzymes was assessed by irradiating 3 months old rat lenses (in RPMI-1640 medium) at 300 nm (100 mu Wcm(-2)) for 24 h, in the absence and presence of ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol acetate and beta-carotene. UVB irradiation resulted in decreased activities of hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, aldose reductase, and Na, K- ATPase by 42, 40, 44 and 57% respectively. While endopeptidase activity (229%) and lipid peroxidation (156%) were increased, isocitrate dehydrogenase activity was not altered on irradiation. In the presence of externally added ascorbic acid, tocopherol and beta-carotene (separately) to the medium, the changes in enzyme activities (except endopeptidase) and increased lipid peroxidation, due to UVB exposure, were prevented. These results suggest that UVB radiation exerts oxidative damage on lens enzymes and antioxidants were protective against this damage.

The behaviour of rat lenticular enzymes, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogena.se (G6PD, EC: 1.1.1.49) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD, EC: 1.1.1.44) as a function of age and UVB irradiation (in vitro) was investigated by irradiating the lens homogenate from 3-and 12-month-old rats at 300 nm (100 μW cm 2). In the 3-month-old group the specific activities of G6PD and 6PGD were reduced by 26% and 42%, respectively, after 24 h of irradiation, whereas in the 12-month-old group the decrease was 38% and 49% respectively, which suggests that the susceptibility of HMPS enzymes to UVB damage is higher in older lenses. The decrease in specitic activity was associated with a change in apparent Km and Vmax (marginal in 3 months and significant in 12 months) of these enzymes due to UVB irradiation. UVB irradiation also decreased the levels of NADPH and NADPH/NADP ratio. These changes, altered activities of G6PD and 6PGD and altered levels of NADPH. may in turn have a bearing on lens transparency.

The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide containing a thick iris is considered for its complete solution by reducing it to two suitable integral equations, one of which is of the first kind and the other is of the second kind. These integral equations are solved approximately, by using truncated Fourier series for the unknown functions. The reflection coefficient is computed numerically from the two integral equation approaches, and almost the same numerical results are obtained. This is also depicted graphically against the wave number and compared with thin iris results, which are computed by using complementary formulations coupled with Galerkin approximations. While the reflection coefficient for a thin iris steadily increases with the wave number, for a thick iris it fluctuates and zero reflection occurs. The number of zeros of the reflection coefficient for a thick iris increases with the thickness. Thus a thick iris becomes completely transparent for some discrete wave numbers. This phenomenon may be significant in the modelling of rectangular waveguides.

We present an explicit computable integral solution of the electric field generated at the focal region of a cylindrical lens. This representation is based on vectorial diffraction theory and further enables the computation of the system point spread function of a cylindrical lens. It is assumed that there is no back-scattering and the contribution from the evanescent field is negligible. Stationary phase approximation along with the Fresnel transmission coefficients are employed for evaluating the polarization dependent electric field components. Studies were carried out to determine the polarization effects and to calculate the system resolution. The effect of s -, p - and randomly polarized light is studied on the fixed sample (electric dipole is fixed in space). Proposed approach allows better understanding of electric field effects at the focus of a cylindrical aplanatic system. This opens up future developments in the field of fluorescence microscopy and optical imaging. (C) 2013 Author(s). Background: We highlight an unrecognized physiological role for the Greek key motif, an evolutionarily conserved super-secondary structural topology of the beta gamma-crystallins. These proteins constitute the bulk of the human eye lens, packed at very high concentrations in a compact, globular, short-range order, generating transparency. Congenital cataract (affecting 400,000 newborns yearly worldwide), associated with 54 mutations in beta gamma-crystallins, occurs in two major phenotypes nuclear cataract, which blocks the central visual axis, hampering the development of the growing eye and demanding earliest intervention, and the milder peripheral progressive cataract where surgery can wait. In order to understand this phenotypic dichotomy at the molecular level, we have studied the structural and aggregation features of representative mutations. Methods: Wild type and several representative mutant proteins were cloned, expressed and purified and their secondary and tertiary structural details, as well as structural stability, were compared in solution, using spectroscopy. Their tendencies to aggregate in vitro and in cellulo were also compared. In addition, we analyzed their structural differences by molecular modeling in silico. Results: Based on their properties, mutants are seen to fall into two classes. Mutants A36P, L45PL54P, R140X, and G165fs display lowered solubility and structural stability, expose several buried residues to the surface, aggregate in vitro and in cellulo, and disturb/distort the Greek key motif. And they are associated with nuclear cataract. In contrast, mutants P24T and R77S, associated with peripheral cataract, behave quite similar to the wild type molecule, and do not affect the Greek key topology. Conclusion: When a mutation distorts even one of the four Greek key motifs, the protein readily self-aggregates and precipitates, consistent with the phenotype of nuclear cataract, while mutations not affecting the motif display `native state aggregation', leading to peripheral cataract, thus offering a protein structural rationale for the cataract phenotypic dichotomy ``distort motif, lose central vision''.

The detection efficiency of a GEM based UV sensitive gaseous photomultiplier (GPM) depends on the focusing of electrons from the drift gap to the GEM aperture. We have studied the effect of drift parameters on the efficiency of electron focusing into Thick GEM (THGEM) holes in a GPM with semitransparent UV photoconverter. This study comprises simulation of electron focusing into THGEM holes using GARFIELD for different Ar and Ne based gas mixtures and experimental investigations of the same with P10 gas mixture. We provide experimental evidence supporting the vectorial theory for determining electric field at and near the geometrical focus of a cylindrical lens. This theory provides precise distribution of field and its polarization effects. Experimental results show a close match (approximate to 95% using (2)-test) with the simulation results (obtained using vectorial theory). Light-sheet generated both at low and high NA cylindrical lens shows the importance of vectorial theory for further development of light-sheet techniques. Potential applications are in planar imaging systems (such as, SPIM, IML-SPIM, imaging cytometry) and spectroscopy. Microsc. Res. Tech. 77:105-109, 2014. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) of thick germanium (Ge) films (similar to 1 mu m) on silicon dioxide (SiO2) at low temperatures is described. A diborane pretreatment on SiO2 films is done to seed the Ge growth, followed by the deposition of thick Ge films using germane (GeH4) and argon (Ar). Further, the effect of hydrogen (H-2) dilution on the deposition rate is also investigated. The film thickness and morphology is characterized using SEM. Use of high RF power and substrate temperature show increased deposition rate. EDS analysis indicates that these films contain 97-98 atomic percentage of Ge. A recipe for anisotropic dry etching of the deposited Ge films with 10nm/ min etch rate is also suggested.

An asymptotically-exact methodology is presented for obtaining the cross-sectional stiffness matrix of a pre-twisted moderately-thick beam having rectangular cross sections and made of transversely isotropic materials. The anisotropic beam is modeled from 3-D elasticity, without any further assumptions. The beam is allowed to have large displacements and rotations, but small strain is assumed. The strain energy of the beam is computed making use of the constitutive law and the kinematical relations derived with the inclusion of geometrical nonlinearities and initial twist. Large displacements and rotations are allowed, but small strain is assumed. The Variational Asymptotic Method is used to minimize the energy functional, thereby reducing the cross section to a point on the reference line with appropriate properties, yielding a 1-D constitutive law. In this method as applied herein, the 2-D cross-sectional analysis is performed asymptotically by taking advantage of a material small parameter and two geometric small parameters. 3-D strain components are derived using kinematics and arranged as orders of the small parameters. Warping functions are obtained by the minimization of strain energy subject to certain set of constraints that renders the 1-D strain measures well-defined. Closed-form expressions are derived for the 3-D non-linear warping and stress fields. The model is capable of predicting interlaminar and transverse shear stresses accurately up to first order.

The cross-sectional stiffness matrix is derived for a pre-twisted, moderately thick beam made of transversely isotropic materials and having rectangular cross sections. An asymptotically-exact methodology is used to model the anisotropic beam from 3-D elasticity, without any further assumptions. The beam is allowed to have large displacements and rotations, but small strain is assumed. The strain energy is computed making use of the beam constitutive law and kinematical relations derived with the inclusion of geometrical nonlinearities and an initial twist. The energy functional is minimized making use of the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM), thereby reducing the cross section to a point on the beam reference line with appropriate properties, forming a 1-D constitutive law. VAM is a mathematical technique employed in the current problem to rigorously split the 3-D analysis of beams into two: a 2-D analysis over the beam cross-sectional domain, which provides a compact semi-analytical form of the properties of the cross sections, and a nonlinear 1-D analysis of the beam reference curve. In this method, as applied herein, the cross-sectional analysis is performed asymptotically by taking advantage of a material small parameter and two geometric small parameters. 3-D strain components are derived using kinematics and arranged in orders of the small parameters. Closed-form expressions are derived for the 3-D non-linear warping and stress fields. Warping functions are obtained by the minimization of strain energy subject to certain set of constraints that render the 1-D strain measures well-defined. The zeroth-order 3-D warping field thus yielded is then used to integrate the 3-D strain energy density over the cross section, resulting in the 1-D strain energy density, which in turn helps identify the corresponding cross-sectional stiffness matrix. The model is capable of predicting interlaminar and transverse shear stresses accurately up to first order.

The transient changes in resistances of Cr0.8Fe0.2NbO4 thick film sensors towards specified concentrations of H-2, NH3, acetonitrile, acetone, alcohol, cyclohexane and petroleum gas at different operating temperatures were recorded. The analyte-specific characteristics such as slopes of the response and retrace curves, area under the curve and sensitivity deduced from the transient curve of the respective analyte gas have been used to construct a data matrix. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to this data and the score plot was obtained. Distinguishing one reducing gas from the other is demonstrated based on this approach, which otherwise is not possible by measuring relative changes in conductivity. This methodology is extended for three Cr0.8Fe0.2NbO4 thick film sensor array operated at different temperatures. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
