Use of wavefront encoding in optical interconnects and fiber switches for cross talk mitigation

A technique of cross talk mitigation developed for liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator based optical interconnects and fiber switches is demonstrated. By purposefully introducing an appropriate aberration into the system, it is possible to reduce the worst-case cross talk by over 10 dB compared to conventional Fourier-transform-based designs. Tests at a wavelength of 674nm validate this approach, and show that there is no noticeable reduction in diffraction efficiency. A 27% spot increase in beam diameter is observed, which is predicted to reduce at longer datacom and telecom wavelengths. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

A proposal for low cross-talk square-lattice photonic crystal waveguide intersection utilizing the symmetry of waveguide modes

We propose an approach to construct waveguide intersections with broad bandwidth and low cross-talk for square-lattice photonic crystals. by utilizing a vanishing overlap of the propagation modes in the waveguides created by defects which support dipole-like defect modes. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the waveguide intersection created in the two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals. Over a bandwidth of 30 nm with the center wavelength at 1300 nm, transmission efficiency above 90% is obtained with cross-talk below -30 dB. Especially, we demonstrate the transmission of a 500-fs pulse at 1.3 Am through the intersection, and the pulse after transmission shows very little distortion while the cross-talk remains at low level meantime. Extending snBench to Support a Video-Based Intrusion Detection and Alerting System with a Centralized Hash Table

In this project we design and implement a centralized hashing table in the snBench sensor network environment. We discuss the feasibility of this approach and compare and contrast with the distributed hashing architecture, with particular discussion regarding the conditions under which a centralized architecture makes sense. There are numerous computational tasks that require persistence of data in a sensor network environment. To help motivate the need for data storage in snBench we demonstrate a practical application of the technology whereby a video camera can monitor a room to detect the presence of a person and send an alert to the appropriate authorities.

Sex talk? overcoming barriers about sex and contraception after childbirth

Anecdotal evidence tells professionals that childbirth is the best form of contraception. However, sexual health problems are the very common after childbirth with Barrett et al (2000) arguing that only 15% of women who have a postnatal sexual problem reported discussing it with a health professional. As health professionals with a predilection for the ‘clinical’ and the ‘prescriptive’ we organise antenatal classes to discuss bathing the baby and post partum reunions to recount birth stories, but often fail to address sexual health problems and contraception after birth.(Glazener 1997). Many women who have carefully used contraception for years prior to pregnancy are often not helped to re-engage with the issues following birth. This would seem to be a particular problem for the most vulnerable parents such as adolescent mothers and their partners (Social Exclusion Unit 1999, 2004) where some young women go on to have more than one baby in a short time period (Reeves 2003). The focus of this paper is to explore the apparent general failure of health professionals to discuss sex after childbirth and provide information regarding reliable contraception. Glazener (1997) tells us that health professionals are encouraged to educate and prepare patients antenatally, for example to be trained to identify problems and deal with them openly and sympathetically. What is brought into question is why this form of rigorous support is not extended to providing sexual health advice in the immediate and often vulnerable postnatal period and why this provision is not a priority for some groups. The paper will explore if this situation caused by a lack of training or is it a symptom of our culture and a British attitude towards sex and contraception.

Do people with diabetes who need to talk want to talk?

Aim. To examine whether the people with diabetes who ask for psychological support are those who are experiencing clinically significant levels of psychological distress.
Method. In total 300 people with diabetes were asked to complete psychometrically validated questionnaires that assessed subjective need and objective psychological distress.
Results. High levels of psychological distress were reported: 25% of the sample reported depressive symptomatology, 41% reported clinically significant levels if anxiety and 51% reported a degree of binge eating behaviour. Participants also indicated a desire to talk to diabetes professionals about various problem areas in diabetes. Chi-square analysis demonstrated that those reporting psychological distress, especially depression, were most likely to indicate a desire to talk to somebody about living with diabetes.
Conclusions. Those who want to talk are those who need to talk. Future service development issues should acknowledge the needs and expressed wishes of service users.
