An application of photoacoustic technique is developed for determining the thermal diffusivity coefficient and the thermal conductivity of transparent materials. The backing material which supports the sample is made optically opaque, i.e., it entirely absorbs the incident light, and the converted heat diffuses through the sample heating the gas in contact with its opposite surface. The method is illustrated by fitting voltage amplitude and phase signals versus the chopping frequency in the photoacoustic cell, according to a theoretical model of heat diffusion. Thermal parameters obtained for three polymers compare very well with results from the literature. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Glasses with composition 60PbGeO(3)-10PbF(2)-30CdF(2) (mol%) have been obtained in the bulk form with a high stability against crystallization. After doping them with 0.5 mol% of Er3+ or Eu3+ and appropriate heat treatment transparent glass ceramics could be obtained. Electronic spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements have been made. beta-PbF2: Er3+/Eu3+ Single crystals, 5-10 nm in size, are detected in the otherwise transparent composite medium, the size of the particles and absence of clustering allowing for the increased transparency of the final materials. New glasses have been prepared in the oxifluoride mixed system TeO2-PbF2-CdF2. Starting from pure TeO2 the addition of the fluorides leads to a decrease in the glasses characteristic temperatures. Also from Raman scattering results a structural evolution was observed where the number of structural units described as [TeO3] trigonal pyramids and [TeO3+1] polyhedra increases at the expense of the [TeO4] trigonal bipyramids supposed to exist in the TeO2, rich samples. Transparent glass ceramics were obtained from the glass with composition 80TeO(2)-10PbF(2)-10CdF(2), (mol%) with the PbTe3O7 crystalline phase being identified by X-ray diffraction and EXAFS measurements performed at the Te K, Cd K and Pb L-III edges. Also from Exafs measurements it is proposed that cadmium ions are preferentially surrounded by oxygen atoms although they were in a fluoride anion environment in the starting material. Intense red upconversion emission around 650 nm in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 transparent glass ceramic containing beta-PbF2:Ho3+ nanocrystals, is presented. The holmium-doped vitroceramic samples were excited by a 980 nm diode laser source. The 650 nm upconversion signal was assigned to the F-5(5) --> I-5(8) transition of holmium ions. Very low intensity signals around 490 and 540 nm corresponding to the F-5(2,3) --> I-5(8) and S-4(2), F-5(4) --> I-5(8) transitions, respectively, were also detected. The upconversion excitation mechanism was achieved through a combination of stepwise phonon-assisted multiphoton absorption, cross-relaxation processes involving pairs of holmium ions, and excited-state absorption. Using a diode laser pump source around 850 nm green upconversion emission around 540 nm was the observed predominant signal. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Frequency upconversion luminescence in erbium-doped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics (TGC) under 980 nm infrared excitation is investigated. Upconversion emission signals around 410, 525, 550, 660, and 850 nm were generated and identified as due to the H-2(9/2) H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground-state, and S-4(3/2)-I-4(13/2), respectively. The erbium ions excited-state emitting levels were populated via a combination of stepwise ground-state absorption (GSA), excited-state absorption (ESA), and cross-relaxation processes. The results also disclosed that both blue (410 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion emission signals in the transparent glass ceramic sample presented twice as much intensity as compared to its vitreous counterpart. Tin oxide nanoparticles prepared by an aqueous sol-gel method were deposited by dip-coating on fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53%ZrF4-20%BaF2-4%LaF3-3%AlF3-20%NaF) to improve its resistance against wet corrosion. The aqueous leaching of uncoated and SnO2-coated fluorozirconate glass was studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and it was shown that even an ultra thin tin dioxide film provides good protection of the glass surface against the bulk propagation of the hydrolytic attack.

Aluminum doped zinc oxide polycrystalline thin films (AZO) were prepared by sol-gel dip-coating process. The sol was prepared from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate using lithium hydroxide or succinic acid as hydrolytic catalyst. The quantity of aluminum in the sol was varied from 1 to 10 mol%. The structural characteristics studied by X-ray diffractometry were complemented by resistivity measurements and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. The films are transparent from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared, presenting an absorption cut-off at almost 290 nm, irrespective of the nature of the catalyst and doping level. The best conductors were obtained for the AZO films containing 3 mol% of aluminum, prepared under acidic and basic catalysis and sintered at 450 degreesC. Their optical band-gap of 4.4 eV calculated from the absorption cut-off is larger than the values for band-gap widening predicted by the standard model for polar semiconductors. These polycrystalline films are textured with preferential orientation of grains along the wurtzite c-axis or the (100) direction. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the influence on optical properties of alkali halides such as CsCl in a covalent glassy matrix has been investigated. Chalcogenide glasses belonging to the (GeS2)-(Ga2S3)-CsCI system with high ratio of CsCl present an entire transparency in the visible range. These glasses maintain good transmission up to 12 mu m. Furthermore, the thermo-mechanical properties and the glass hygroscopicity have been investigated as function of the CsCl amount. This new generation of glasses presents a great interest for optical application. They could be used both for passive applications (multi-spectral imaging) and active applications for rare-earth doping due to their good transmission in the visible range, increasing optical pumping possibilities.

Eu3+ and Tm3+ doped lanthanum fluoride and lanthanum oxyfluoride are obtained from Eu3+, Tm3+ containing lanthanum fluoracetate solutions. The nature of the crystal phase obtained could be controlled by the temperature of heat treatment. Spectral characteristics of Eu3+ doped crystal phases were sufficiently different to allow utilization of Eu3+ as structural probes. Tm3+ emission at the technologically important spectral region of 1450nm could be observed for the fluoride and oxyfluoride crystal phases. The large bandwidth obtained (around 120nm) suggests potential applications in optical amplification. SiO2-LaF3-LaOF composite materials were also prepared. It is observed that for heat treatments above 800degreesC, fluorine loss, probably in the form of SiF4 hinder the observation of Tm3+ emission. Eu3+ spectroscopic characteristics clearly show the evolution of a fluoride like environment to an amorphous oxide one as the temperature of heat treatment increased. Thin films obtained by dip-coating on V-SiO2 substrates and treated at 300degreesC, 500degreesC and 800degreesC display guided modes in the visible and infrared regions. Optical characteristics (refractive index and films thickness) were obtained at 543.5, 632.8 and 1550nm. Attenuation as low as 1.8dB/cm was measured at 632.8nm. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

PANI films were deposited on glass substrates by in-situ polymerization and characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. A method is developed to accurately analyze ellipsometric data obtained for transparent glass substrates before and after modification with absorbing polymer films. Surface modification was made with an overlayer such as polyaniline ( PANI), which exhibits different optical properties by varying its oxidation state. First, the issue of using transparent substrates for ellipsometry studies was examined and then, spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to characterize absorbing overlayers on transparent glasses. The same methodologies of data analysis can be also applied to other absorbing films on transparent substrates, and deposited by different techniques.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of the microorganism Streptococcus mutans on toothbrushes made of opaque and transparent materials. METHODS: Twenty-eight toothbrushes (14 opaque and 14 transparent) were inoculated in tubes with brain heart infusion (BHI) broth of a standard strain of S. mutans and incubated in candle jars at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. Both the opaque and transparent toothbrushes were removed at T = 0 h (control); T = 0.5 h; T = 1 h; T = 2 h; T = 4 h; T = 8 h; and T = 24 h. Individual toothbrushes were subjected to agitation in a saline solution and samples of the solution were diluted and inoculated in Bacitracin Sucrose Agar--SB-20. RESULTS: After half an hour (T2) there was a significant decrease in the number of microorganisms on the transparent and opaque toothbrushes, respectively 6.0 x 10(5) and 9.4 x 10(5), when compared to the control. After the T3 = 1 hour, T4 = 2 hours, T5 = 4 h, the number of microorganisms decreased from 4.1 x 10(5); 2.1 x 10(5); 1.4 x 10(5); and 9.2 x 10(5); 5.7 x 10(5); 1.2 x 10(5) to zero (0.0) in T6 = 8 h, respectively on the transparent and opaque toothbrushes. The reduction in viable microorganisms was more obvious with the transparent toothbrushes, although the number of viable microorganisms was not significantly different for the two types of toothbrushes at the end of the experiment, T5 = 1.4 x 10(5) (transparent) and T5 = 1.2 x 10(5) (opaque). CONCLUSIONS: With both opaque and transparent toothbrushes, the number of microorganisms decreased with time. A reduction in the number of microorganisms on the transparent toothbrushes was observed following inoculation and incubation. This suggests the transparent toothbrushes inhibit the viability of the S. mutans.

Transparent glass ceramics containing β-PbF2:Er 3+ nanocrystals were obtained through appropriate thermal treatments of a glass of molar composition 60PbGeO3-10PbF2-30CdF 2 doped with 0.5 mol% Er3+. Their optical properties, as well as upconversion processes among erbium ions in the glass and glass ceramic matrix were studied. From absorption spectra, Judd-Ofelt parameters and radiative transition rates for several excited levels were calculated. Emission spectra in the visible and NIR regions were collected, and stimulated emission cross sections were obtained by McCumber theory for the 4F 13/2→4I15/2 transition at 1.5 μm. Red and green upconversion emissions were measured in glass and glass ceramics upon excitation at 980 nm; lifetimes were measured in order to assess the upconversion mechanisms.
