The hot deformation behaviour of Mg–3Al alloy has been studied using the processing-map technique. Compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 250–550 °C and strain rate range 3 × 10−4 to 102 s−1 and the flow stress data obtained from the tests were used to develop the processing map. The various domains in the map corresponding to different dissipative characteristics have been identified as follows: (i) grain boundary sliding (GBS) domain accommodated by slip controlled by grain boundary diffusion at slow strain-rates (<10−3 s−1) in the temperature range from 350 to 450 °C, (ii) two different dynamic recrystallization (DRX) domains with a peak efficiency of 42% at 550 °C/10−1 s−1 and 425 °C/102 s−1 governed by stress-assisted cross-slip and thermally activated climb as the respective rate controlling mechanisms and (iii) dynamic recovery (DRV) domain below 300 °C in the intermediate strain rate range from 3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1. The regimes of flow instability have also been delineated in the processing map using an instability criterion. Adiabatic shear banding at higher strain rates (>101 s−1) and solute drag by substitutional Al atoms at intermediate strain rates (3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1) in the temperature range (350–450 °C) are responsible for flow instability. The relevance of these mechanisms with reference to hot working practice of the material has been indicated. The processing maps of Mg–3Al alloy and as-cast Mg have been compared qualitatively to elucidate the effect of alloying with aluminum on the deformation behaviour of magnesium.

A conventional magnesium alloy, AZ91D, and two creep resistant magnesium alloys, developed for powertrain applications, MRI 153M and MRI 230D, are prepared by high pressure die casting. These alloys are tested for their creep behaviour in the continuous manner, as is the Current practice, and in the interrupted manner, which represents the real life Situation more closely. It is observed that the interrupted creep tests give rise to a primary creep appearing at the beginning of each cycle resulting in a higher average strain rate than that encountered in the continuous creep tests. Further, the shorter the cycle time, higher is the average strain rate in the interrupted creep tests. A higher average strain rate will give rise to a higher strain over the same period. This is attributed to the recovery taking place during the cooling and heating between two cycles. The effect of additional precipitation during interrupted creep tests depends on the nature of the precipitates. The additional precipitation of beta phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles increases the steady state strain rate in the AZ91D and MRI 153M alloys. whereas the additional precipitation of C36 phase during the cooling and heating between two cycles decreases the steady state strain rate in the MRI 230D alloy. Rapid granular flows are defined as flows in which the time scales for the particle interactions are small compared to the inverse of the strain rate, so that the particle interactions can be treated as instantaneous collisions. We first show, using Discrete Element simulations, that even very dense flows of sand or glass beads with volume fraction between 0.5 and 0.6 are rapid granular flows. Since collisions are instantaneous, a kinetic theory approach for the constitutive relations is most appropriate, and we present kinetic theory results for different microscopic models for particle interaction. The significant difference between granular flows and normal fluids is that energy is not conserved in a granular flow. The differences in the hydrodynamic modes caused by the non-conserved nature of energy are discussed. Going beyond the Boltzmann equation, the effect of correlations is studied using the ring kinetic approximation, and it is shown that the divergences in the viscometric coefficients, which are present for elastic fluids, are not present for granular flows because energy is not conserved. The hydrodynamic model is applied to the flow down an inclined plane. Since energy is not a conserved variable, the hydrodynamic fields in the bulk of a granular flow are obtained from the mass and momentum conservation equations alone. Energy becomes a relevant variable only in thin 'boundary layers' at the boundaries of the flow where there is a balance between the rates of conduction and dissipation. We show that such a hydrodynamic model can predict the salient features of a chute flow, including the flow initiation when the angle of inclination is increased above the 'friction angle', the striking lack of observable variation of the volume fraction with height, the observation of a steady flow only for certain restitution coefficients, and the density variations in the boundary layers.

Friction plays an important role in metal forming processes, and the surface texture of the die is a major factor that influences friction. In the present investigation, experiments were conducted to understand the role of surface texture of the harder die surface and load on coefficient of friction. The data analysis showed that the coefficient of friction is highly dependent on the surface texture of the die surface. Assigning different magnitude of coefficients of friction, obtained in the experiments, at different regions between the die and the workpiece, Finite element (FE) simulation of a compression test was carried out to understand the effect of friction on deformation and stress/strain-rate distribution. Simulation results revealed that, owing to the difference in coefficient of friction, there is a change in metal flow pattern. Both experimental and simulation results confirmed that the surface texture of the die surface and thus coefficient of friction directly affects the strain rate and flow pattern of the workpiece.

Processing maps for hot working of as-cast and wrought stainless steels of type AISI 304 have been developed in the temperature range 600 to 1250°C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s−1. The domain of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in as-cast material occurs at higher temperatures (1250°C) and lower strain rates (0.001 s−1) than in the wrought steel (1100°C and 0.01 s−1). The effect is explained in terms of enhanced nucleation rate of DRX due to the carbide, ferrite particles, stable oxides/nitrides and second-phase intermetallics in the as-cast microstructure. The DRX domain is wider in the wrought material although the peak efficiency is less (32%) than in the as-cast case (40%). The flow instability regime is not significantly affected by the initial microstructure

Evolution of crystallographic texture during high strain rate deformation in FCC materials with different stacking fault energy (Ni, Cu, and Cu-10Zn alloy) has been studied. The texture evolved in FCC materials at these strain rates show little dependence on the Stacking Fault Energy and the amount of deformation. Copper shows an anomalous behavior that is attributed to the ease of cross slip and continuous Dynamic Recrystallization that are operative under the experimental conditions.

Strain controlled low cycle fatigue tests on solution annealed nitrogen modified 316L stainless steel have been conducted in air at 823 K to ascertain the influence of strain rate and strain amplitude. Effect of strain rate was examined from 3x10(-5) s(-1) to 3 x 10(-2) at a fixed strain amplitude of +/- 0.6%. The influence of strain amplitude was evaluated between +/- 0.25 % and +/- 1.0% at a constant strain rate of 3x10(-3) s(-1). The cyclic stress response at all testing conditions is characterized by an initial hardening followed by saturation. Serrated flow, a characteristic feature of dynamic strain ageing (DSA) was seen at strain rates lower than 3x10(-3) s(-1). Fatigue life was found to decrease with decrease in strain rate. The reduction in fatigue resistance is attributed mainly to the detrimental effects associated with DSA.

The evolution of microstructure and texture during room temperature compression of commercially pure Ti with four different initial orientations were studied under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. At a low strain rate (epsilon)over dot = 3 x 10(-4) s(-1) the different initial textures yielded the same end texture, despite different microstructural evolution in terms of twin boundaries. High strain rate deformation at (epsilon)over dot = 1.5 x 10(3) s(-1) was characterized by extensive twinning and evolution of a texture that was similar to that at low strain rate with minor differences. However, there was a significant difference in the strength of the texture for different orientations that was absent for low strain rate deformed samples at high strain rate. A viscoplastic self-consistent model with a secant approach was used to corroborate the experimental results by simulation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

In this paper, an overview of some recent computational studies by the authors on ductile crack initiation under mode I, dynamic loading is presented. In these studies, a large deformation finite element procedure is employed along with the viscoplastic version of the Gurson constitutive model that accounts for the micro-mechanical processes of void nucleation, growth and coalescence. A three-point bend fracture specimen subjected to impact, and a single edge notched specimen loaded by a tensile stress pulse are analysed. Several loading rates are simulated by varying the impact speed or the rise time and magnitude of the stress pulse. A simple model involving a semi-circular notch with a pre-nucleated circular hole situated ahead of it is considered. The growth of the hole and its interaction with the notch tip, which leads to plastic strain and porosity localization in the ligament connecting them, is simulated. The role of strain-rate dependence on ductile crack initiation at high loading rates, and the specimen geometry effect on the variation of dynamic fracture toughness with loading rate are Investigated.

Previous work involving the squeeze-film flow of a model paste substance, a mixture of clay particles and mineral oil commonly known as ‘Plasticine’, has suggested that it behaves as a simple Herschel-Bulkley fluid which exhibits little strain history. However, tensile measurements, which are naturally limited to small strains by the onset of necking, indicate that this material shows strain hardening. A two roll-mill is employed here to investigate the influence of larger extensional strains. The data are analysed using an available first order engineering plasticity solution. The results confirm that this material exhibits both extensional strain and strain rate hardening. This observed strain hardening effect, which is not observed in the squeeze-film experiments, is attributed, in part, to the more homogeneous deformation fields induced during rolling and tensile extension.

We report on the formation of a stable Body-Centered Heptahedral (BCH) crystalline nanobridge structure of diameter ~ 1nm under high strain rate tensile loading to a <100> Cu nanowire. Extensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are performed. Six different cross-sectional dimensions of Cu nanowires are analyzed, i.e. 0.3615 x 0.3615 nm2, 0.723 x 0.723 nm2, 1.0845 x 1.0845 nm2, 1.446 x 1.446 nm2, 1.8075 x 1.8075 nm2, and 2.169 x 2.169 nm2. The strain rates used in the present simulations are 1 x 109 s-1, 1 x 108 s-1, and 1 x 107 s-1. We have shown that the length of the nanobridge can be characterized by larger plastic strain. A large plastic deformation is an indication that the structure is highly stable. The BCH nanobridge structure also shows enhanced mechanical properties such as higher fracture toughness and higher failure strain. The effect of temperature, strain rate and size of the nanowire on the formation of BCH structure is also explained in details. We also show that the initial orientation of the nanowires play an important role on the formation of BCH crystalline structure. Results indicate that proper tailoring of temperature and strain rate during processing or in the device can lead to very long BCH nanobridge structure of Cu with enhanced mechanical properties, which may find potential application for nano-scale electronic circuits.

In this work, the effects of loading rate, material rate sensitivity and constraint level on quasi-static crack tip fields in a FCC single crystal are studied. Finite element simulations are performed within a mode I, plane strain modified boundary layer framework by prescribing the two term (K-T) elastic crack tip field as remote boundary conditions. The material is assumed to obey a rate-dependent crystal plasticity theory. The orientation of the single crystal is chosen so that the crack surface coincides with the crystallographic (010) plane and the crack front lies along 101] direction. Solutions corresponding to different stress intensity rates K., T-stress values and strain rate exponents m are obtained. The results show that the stress levels ahead of the crack tip increase with K. which is accompanied by gradual shrinking of the plastic zone size. However, the nature of the shear band patterns around the crack tip is not affected by the loading rate. Further, it is found that while positive T-stress enhances the opening and hydrostatic stress levels ahead of crack tip, they are considerably reduced with imposition of negative T-stress. Also, negative T-stress promotes formation of shear bands in the forward sector ahead of the crack tip and suppresses them behind the tip.

Particle simulations based on the discrete element method are used to examine the effect of base roughness on the granular flow down an inclined plane. The base is composed of a random configuration of fixed particles, and the base roughness is decreased by decreasing the ratio of diameters of the base and moving particles. A discontinuous transition from a disordered to an ordered flow state is observed when the ratio of diameters of base and moving particles is decreased below a critical value. The ordered flowing state consists of hexagonally close packed layers of particles sliding over each other. The ordered state is denser (higher volume fraction) and has a lower coordination number than the disordered state, and there are discontinuous changes in both the volume fraction and the coordination number at transition. The Bagnold law, which states that the stress is proportional to the square of the strain rate, is valid in both states. However, the Bagnold coefficients in the ordered flowing state are lower, by more than two orders of magnitude, in comparison to those of the disordered state. The critical ratio of base and moving particle diameters is independent of the angle of inclination, and varies very little when the height of the flowing layer is doubled from about 35 to about 70 particle diameters. While flow in the disordered state ceases when the angle of inclination decreases below 20 degrees, there is flow in the ordered state at lower angles of inclination upto 14 degrees. Room temperature, uniaxial compression creep experiments were performed on micro-/nano-sized pillars (having diameters in the range of 250-2000 nm) of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to investigate the influence of sample size on the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior in amorphous alloys. Experimental results reveal that plastic deformation indeed occurs at ambient temperature and at stresses that are well below the nominal quasi-static yield stress. At a given stress, higher total strains accrue in the smaller specimens. In all cases, plastic deformation was found to be devoid of shear bands, i.e., it occurs in homogeneous manner. The stress exponent obtained from the slope of the linear relation between strain rate and applied stress also shows a strong size effect, which is rationalized in terms of the amount of free volume created during deformation and the surface-to-volume ratio of the pillar. The present work proposes a new sensing methodology, which uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) to measure in vivo the surface strain and strain rate on calf muscles while performing certain exercises. Two simple exercises, namely ankle dorsi-flexion and ankle plantar-flexion, have been considered and the strain induced on the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle while performing these exercises has been monitored. The real time strain generated has been recorded and the results are compared with those obtained using a commercial Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDU) system. It is found that the proposed sensing methodology is promising for surface strain measurements in biomechanical applications.
