Cretaceous sediments encountered in Hole 603B contain a 17 Å smectite as the principal clay mineral, with lesser amounts of illite, kaolinite, and randomly interstratified illite/smectite (I/S). No evidence of smectite to I/S transformation with depth is seen in the interval between 1040 and 1570 m below the sediment surface. Although the presence of some volcanic ash suggests a volcanic origin for the smectite, the nature of associated organic matter together with prevailing sedimentological models for Cretaceous sedimentation on the lower continental rise argue more strongly for a dominantly terrestrial origin for the clays.

The Cenozoic sediments of the CRP-3 drill core from the continental shelf of McMurdo Sound in Ross Sea, Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, have been investigated for their clay mineral assemblages, especially for the smectite abundances, concentrations and crystallinities. The assemblages of CRP-3 are very different from those of the CRP-1 and CRP-2/2A drill cores. Thus, an almost monomineralic assemblage characterizes the sequence below 330 mbsf. This assemblage is made of well-crystallized smectite with probably authigenic origin between 800 mbsf and 625 mbsf. From 625 mbsf to 330 mbsf the assemblage consists of moderately crystallized smectite that, at least in part, seems to be of detrital origin and thus indicates weathering under a relatively warm and wet climate. In the interval 330-145 mbsf, smectite concentrations fluctuate between 50% and 100% and probably document alternating phases of chemical weathering under a warm and wet climate and physical weathering under a relatively cool and dry climate. Above 145 mbsf the smectite decreases dramatically to concentrations of about 20% and becomes poorly crystalline. In contrast, illite and chlorite become more abundant. Such an assemblage is typical for early Oligocene and younger sediments in McMurdo Sound and reflects physical weathering conditions under a cool climate on a glaciated Antarctic continent. Correlations of the changes in the clay mineral spectrum of CRP-3 with other cores from McMurdo Sound and from other parts of the Southern Ocean has to remain speculative at this stage, because of the poor age control.

The mineralogy and P, Fe and Mn contents of basal metalliferous and nonmetalliferous sediments of two Deep Sea Drilling Project cores (Sites 77 and 80) were investigated. When compared with superjacent nonmetalliferous material, basal metalliferous sediments are significantly enriched in P, Fe and Mn. Among the phases present in the metalliferous sediment samples are a poorly-crystalline Fe-rich smectite and X-ray amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides. P is associated primarily with the oxyhydroxides. Adsorption of phosphate on smectite does not seem to play any role in the uptake of P by metalliferous sediments. An estimate of the removal of P by on- and off-ridge metallogenic deposition suggests that this process strongly affects the overall geochemical balance of phosphorus in the World Ocean.

Sediments of the CRP-2/2A drill core from the continental shelf of McMurdo Sound in Ross Sea, Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, have been investigated for their clay mineral assemblages, especially for the smectite contents and smectite crystallinities. Highest smectite amounts and best crystallinities occur in three intervals below 485 mbsf in CRP-2/2A. They indicate deposition of sediments during a time when chemical weathering was active on large ice-free areas on the nearby Antarctic continent. In he upper part of the core, smectite contents are much lower and crystallinities are worse. This clay mineral composition indicates deposition of sediments during a time when physical weathering prevailed on an ice-covered continent. At deep-sea sites around Antarctica the shift from smectite-dominated to smectite-poor and illite-rich assemblages is well dated as earliest Oligocene, 33.9-33.1 Ma, and documents the onset of continental glaciation in East Antarctica. At CIROS-1 a corresponding shift in the clay mineralogy was observed at a depth of 425-445 mbsf.

Clay mineral assemblages at ODP Site 1146 in the northern South China Sea are used to investigate sediment source and transport processes and to evaluate the evolution of the East Asian monsoon over the past 2 Myr. Clay minerals consist mainly of illite (22-43%) and smectite (12-48%), with associated chlorite (10-30%), kaolinite (2-18%), and random mixed-layer clays (5-22%). Hydrodynamic and mineralogical studies indicate that illite and chlorite sources include Taiwan and the Yangtze River, that smectite and mixed-layer clays originate predominantly from Luzon and Indonesia, and that kaolinite is primarily derived from the Pearl River. Mineral assemblages indicate strong glacial-interglacial cyclicity, with high illite, chlorite, and kaolinite content during glacials and high smectite and mixed-layer clay content during interglacials. During interglacials, summer enhanced monsoon (southwesterly) currents transport more smectite and mixed-layer clays to Site 1146 whereas during glacials, enhanced winter monsoon (northerly) currents transport more illite and chlorite from Taiwan and the Yangtze River. The ratio (smectite+mixed layers)/(illite+chlorite) was adopted as a proxy for East Asian monsoon variability. Higher ratios indicate strengthened summer-monsoon winds and weakened winter-monsoon winds during interglacials. In contrast, lower ratios indicate a strongly intensified winter monsoon and weakened summer monsoon during glacials. Spectral analysis indicates the mineral ratio was dominantly forced by monsoon variability prior to the development of large-scale glaciation at 1.2 Myr and by both monsoon variability and the effects of changing sea level in the interval 1.2 Myr to present.
