Audited accounts, 1713-1745

The parchment-bound hardcover folio volume contains the Steward's accounts with the College from March 20, 1712/13 through August 9, 1745. The accounts are arranged as Harvard College's debits to the Steward with entries listing the Steward's expenses for students, salaries, and provisions and equipment, and the Steward's credits collected from the quarterly bills, arranged by type of charge (such as study rent, payments from the Butler, and repairs).

Letter from Edward Wigglesworth to John Lowell, 1781 January 3

Four leaves containing a four-and-a-half-page letter in the hand of Professor Edward Wigglesworth to John Lowell dated January 3, 1781. In the letter, Professor Wigglesworth describes the issues related to the deprecating value of paper money and the salaries of Harvard officers, and he provides recommendations for the General Court's grants to the College.

Copy of letters from Ebenezer Storer to John Lowell, 1782 October 31

Two leaves containing two one-page handwritten copies of letters from Harvard College Treasurer Ebenezer Storer both dated October 31, 1782. The first letter outlines the salaries of several College officers and their funding sources. The second letter details the portion of the salaries received from the rents of the College and the assessments on students. The verso of the second leaf contains a note about the document written by one of John Lowell's sons.

The Report of the Committee appointed to Consid'n of the Memorial of the Overseers of Harvard College, 1722 June 29

Two folio-sized leaves containing a handwritten copy of a June 29, 1722 report created by a Committee of the General Court responding to the June 13, 1722 memorial of the Board of Overseers. The report lists three points declaring that the Charter of 1650 intended the Tutors to be members of the Corporation "provided they exceed not five in number," that none of the Fellows be Overseers, and that the Charter of 1650 did not grant the Corporation the power to set salaries without the consent of the Overseers. The copy notes that the report was read and accepted on June 29, and signed by Governor Samuel Shute on July 2, 1722, with the stipulation that none of the current non-resident Fellows be removed from the Corporation.

Four pieces of paper containing notes and figures related to colleges in the University of Cambridge including calculations of the number of fellows, scholars, and masters. The verso of one leaf contains a February 21, 1800 request for the creation of a pamphlet with eulogies for George Washington.

Three leaves with handwritten calculations and account information related to faculty salaries, the assignments on delinquents, rents, and repairs. One leaf is inscribed "R. Hallowell Feb. 28 1801" and likely refers to Robert Hallowell (later Gardiner), a member of the Harvard Class of 1801.

References to certain articles in Coll. Books, [1804]

Nine small scraps of paper used by Pearson to note references to certain articles in the College Books. The notes are brief, for example "Professors' salaries p. 112," and refer to professorship rules, inductions, or salaries. The slips were originally folded into a little packet labeled "References to certain articles in Coll Books." One note was written on a scrap of a letter dated October 1, 1804.

One folio-sized leaf containing a handwritten list of grants received by President Holyoke from the Massachusetts General Court between 1737 and 1750, presumably copied from a record book cited as "M.S. No. II," pages 26-56.

[Note regarding College expenditures, 1794]

One leaf containing a handwritten note intended to justify the expenses of the College with financial figures about the salaries of past presidents and a list of the College's physical plant intended to indicate that "the annual charge for repairs & incidental expenses, it is hoped, will not appear immodest." The note is undated, but the "present arrears" of the College is listed as £198 indicating it was written before the use of the dollar sign. The note is accompanied by a brown paper packet marked "College Sundries" that originally housed the item.
