The calcareous nannofossil assemblages from sediment core DS97-2P from the Reykjanes Ridge have been investigated to document oceanographic changes in surface water during the Holocene. The recorded variations in coccolithophore species assemblages and accumulation rates indicate that the region was subjected to rapid changes of surface water masses throughout the entire Holocene. Coccolithophore assemblages generally are of low species diversity and consist mainly of Emiliania huxleyi and Coccolithus pelagicus ssp. pelagicus. Two major events occurred at 8.5-7 ka and at 4.5-3.5 ka, showing higher coccolith accumulation rates, suggesting that the influence of relatively warm Atlantic waters via the Irminger Current was strong in the investigated area. The coccolithophore assemblages have been compared with diatom, foraminifer and sedimentological records within the same core. These data, supported by a comparison with previously published proxy records, add credit to the hypothesis that Holocene changes did not occur uniformly across the North Atlantic. The results have highlighted the Holocene pattern in the North Atlantic, as a period influenced by strong regionalism with discrepancies in the hydrographical trends and in the distribution of the planktonic proxies.

This thesis’ hypothesis states that architectural modernity in Mexico is not, as sometimes pretended, a homogeneous history, focused on some key figures, but rather a multiple and complex narrative, in which art and print media have played an essential role. Therefore, it proposes a new perspective on 20th century architecture in Mexico analized through the relationship between architecture and photography, art, theory and media. Its aim is to link architecture and artistic movements, authors and publications, forms and manifestos. What is intended here is to explore the concepts of ‘modernity’ and ‘identity’ as part of the construction of architecture and the concept of ‘Mexicanity’. Despite the emphasis that has been given to the construction of an architectural canon —mostly related to the notions of monumentality, regionalism and mestizaje/métissage— this thesis’ approach is focused mainly in processes and not in forms. Through connections between diverse layers of information, new ways of dealing with the architectural project are explored. Brazilian architecture critic Hugo Segawa has described the research on Latin American architecture as «more a task of archaeology than of historiography». Nonetheless, he has also described Mexico as «the most vigorous center of theoretical debates in Latin America throughout the 20th century». This acute discrepancy between decay and vigor, between abundance of production and precarious state of conservation has determined not only the ways in which architecture is studied and understood but also the process of architectural creation. This work is therefore outlined as a new platform in order to reformulate the discipline as a system based on a common will to research and create, far from the existing amnesiac attitude. Following British critic Anthony Vidler, the interest relies in the attempt to ‘relate’ History to project. In order to reduce the elusiveness of an incomplete history and, specially, to understand how ideas become forms and objects, this thesis is composed of 22 timelines organized in three intersecting itineraries: Architecture, Art and Theory. Drawing inspiration from Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne and Gabriel Orozco’s series Asterisms, new exploration devices are created. In such a way, diverse topics unfold to draw connections between built environment, utopian projects, publications, photography and publicity. This work is developed as a new tool for exploration, articulated by layers, like an evolutionary genealogy map. Its objective is to analyze not only the architecture build in cities, but produced on paper. Starting with the work of the generation that led Mexican architecture into the 20th century, this research extends until the first decade of the 21st century (the epilogue), gathering together works which have been usually seen in isolation, and therefore making possible its understanding in a broader context. As a scenario for exploration, this work tries to prompt the crossing of meanings, in the belief that new approaches on the discipline and its context are needed. Architecture in Mexico — a country whose population grew in the 20th century form 13 to 100 million— is related essentially with an anonymous production, or else made from stereotypes. However, between the sprawl of informal urban developments and landmark buildings there is an architectural production as extensive as it is unexamined. This essay introduces a series of new constellations, ranging from the Revolution in 1910 to the Olympic Games in 1968; from the earthquake in Mexico City in 1985 to the international competitions of the last decade. These myriad perspectives present buildings that were never built, forgotten writings, iconic images and unpublished material.

To a certain extent what this research is proposing is a return to local principles or to regionalism, which is able to employ place-specific tools and craftsmanship (local arts and their virtues) promoting and being innovative with traditional elements which belong to a particular place, and using tectonic and stereotomic logic. You can observe this, in the face of a destructive natural event. An immediate architectural reaction is produced in cooperation with the rest of the not affected territory. The cooperation of certain non-governmental organizations with other groups in the same collaborative cycle improves the recycling of ideas and city planning forms. These organizations cooperate in the development and implementation of cities and settlements that need a fast reaction when facing an unexpected disaster.

: Sogn Benedetg Chapel in Sumvitg, part of the early work of Peter Zumthor, condenses aspects of his ideas and his way of designing and building, which still remain valid today. Remembrances of childhood lay the foundation for his focus to architecture, which involves the collection of daily life traces, sensitive to the place and using materials treated in a precise manner, acquiring their presence under the light. With a tactile and tectonic language, from a phenomenological approach, he seeks to share a multi-sensory experience, encompassing complementary perceptions that transcend the visual geometry. As Kahn does, he relies on Heidegger?s thinking and is inspired by the little hut that the philosopher inhabited in the Black Forest, as well as by Rudolf Schwarz?s religious architecture, whose imprint can be appreciated in both the building and the objects encountered within it. The tension generated between interior and exterior keeps awake the senses of the visitor, while the characteristics of the chapel connect with an integrative regionalism that does not exclude contemporary abstract forms.

ABSTRACT Examining the singular contribution of João Archer, Nunes de Almeida and Rogério Ramos to the construction of the energy landscape through architecture, presents today a great opportunity for the advancement of our discipline. This collective of architects studying at the Porto School during the period in which master Carlos Ramos reformed the education of architecture in Portugal, designed and built from the Hidroeléctrica do Douro project office itself, the three hydropower infrastructures and the respective urban structures of Picote), Miranda and Bemposta, located in the International Douro. The project parameters are set between 1953 and 1964, representing one of the most significant moments of infrastructure, industrialization and modernization in a country at the time extremely delayed by the isolation resulting from the Salazar dictatorship. This is also the first architectural project of infrastructures within the scale of territory in which specific traits of the Porto School are recognized and wherein it came into effect the revision and transition from a modernity marked by the Loos rigor and Gropius rationalism lineage to a critical regionalism appropriate to the culture of the place, connected to Lúcio Costa, Wright and Aalto. Thus, rather than space, technical or constructive achievements of the buildings, it is exposed the process used by the authors, their way of understanding and projecting an industrial landscape with a social and humanistic dimension through a poetic and minimal architecture sustained in culture and character of the place, valuing arguments, tools, principles and mechanisms that can become a reference for our profession and provide knowledge to guide architecture towards the construction of the contemporary landscape.

The EU‘s external action includes a preference for regional interlocutors and a tendency to promote regionalism. This work concentrates on the southeast Asian area and it aims at investigating the nature of EU‘s promotion of ASEAN regional integration. The EU‘s ideas and practices of regionalism as well as the single market experience influence the EU‘s international action. The power deriving from the EU‘s institutionalized market is used by the Union in a normative way to diffuse the EU‘s ideas and principles, advance the EU‘s interests and spread its model of economic integration through political dialogue, development cooperation and preferential trade arrangements. This action seems to result in a certain diffusion of the EU‘s ideas and practices in southeast Asia as well as in a subsequent reappropriation and redefinition of external inputs by ASEAN.

This paper first aims at assessing the economic and political importance of Mercosur for the EU’s interests in the short and medium run – say for the one or two coming decades or so. As Mercosur’s size is largely determined by Brazil’s size, this paper focuses on Brazil – although the paper assumes that, from Brazil’s perspective, a Brazil–EU preferential trade agreement (PTA) is a non-starter. It then aims at positioning the Mercosur–EU (MEU) PTA in the context of the EU’s current trade policy. In particular, it tries to assess, once one takes into account all the crucial goals to be met by the EU, whether the EU is likely to find the time and the resources necessary for dealing properly with a MEU PTA; this effort is notably complicated by the very divergent views on the role of trade between Brazil on the one hand, and Argentina and Venezuela, on the other hand. Finally, the paper examines the PTA options that can be seen as reasonably feasible. It suggests that, unless there are dramatic changes in Mercosur’s present trajectory, the goal of negotiating a fully-fledged MEU PTA should be set aside for some time – at least a decade or so. This does not mean leaving the negotiating table, but rather focusing on negotiating topics that remain attractive to both sides in the current context, and manageable and flexible enough to overcome the broad general problems confronted by Mercosur and the EU.

The design of South American integration is becoming different. This has been quite common in the trajectory of over six decades of initiatives aimed at generating institutional frameworks to facilitate regional integration. However, even when it has become apparent that the previous design is undergoing a new process of change, it would be difficult to predict for how long the one that is beginning to take shape will remain in effect. The experience of recent decades suggests great caution in forecasts that are optimistic about any eventual longevity. Several factors are contributing to this redesign. Some are external to the region while others are endogenous. The combination of these factors will influence the future design of South American integration. If past lessons are correctly capitalized and certain advantage is derived from the leeway provided by a decentralized international system with multiple options, we can anticipate that what will predominate in the region will be multidimensional integration agreements (with political and economic objectives at the same time) and with cross-memberships and commitments. If this were the case, the actual impact on regional governance, social and productive integration and the competitive insertion at a global scale will depend largely on the following factors: the quality and sustainability of the strategy for development and global and regional insertion of each country; the combination of a reasonable degree of flexibility and predictability in the commitments made and their corresponding ground rule, and the density of the network of cross-interests that can be achieved as a result of the respective regional integration agreements, reflected in multiple transnational social and production networks.

Introduction. Regional government in contemporary western Europe corresponds to a type of society and economy variously labeled "post-industrial", "post-bourgeois" or merely "the New Europe."l This New Europe evolved historically from the interconnected strands of capitalism; industrialism and pluralistic democracy. It resembles in many respects the type of economy and society familiar to us in North America. Regional government in such a society is thus merely an adaptation on the scale of half a continent of forms of social and economic organization which evolved historically at the national level. Regional government in the New Europe is the institutional and political recognition that societies have changed dramatically since 1945, so dramatically that they cannot be adequately described in the doctrines and ideologies made familiar by nineteenth and early twentieth century political thought. Hence the New Europe and its regional government is the future of that part of history which has also been aptly described as "the end of ideology."

The Western Balkans integration within the EU has started a legal process which is the rejection of former communist legal/political approaches and the transformation of former communist institutions. Indeed, the EU agenda has brought vertical/horizontal integration and Europeanization of national institutions (i.e. shifting power to the EU institutions and international authorities). At this point, it is very crucial to emphasize the fact that the Western Balkans as a whole region has currently an image that includes characteristics of both the Soviet socialism and the European democracy. The EU foreign policies and enlargement strategy for Western Balkans have significant effects on four core factors (i.e. Schengen visa regulations, remittances, asylum and migration as an aggregate process). The convergence/divergence of EU member states’ priorities for migration policies regulate and even shape directly the migration dynamics in migrant sender countries. From this standpoint, the research explores how main migration factors are influenced by political and judicial factors such as; rule of law and democracy score, the economic liberation score, political and human rights, civil society score and citizenship rights in Western Balkan countries. The proposal of interhybridity explores how the hybridization of state and non-state actors within home and host countries can solve labor migration-related problems. The economical and sociopolitical labor-migration model of Basu (2009) is overlapping with the multidimensional empirical framework of interhybridity. Indisputably, hybrid model (i.e. collaboration state and non-state actors) has a catalyst role in terms of balancing social problems and civil society needs. Paradigmatically, it is better to perceive the hybrid model as a combination of communicative and strategic action that means the reciprocal recognition within the model is precondition for significant functionality. This will shape social and industrial relations with moral meanings of communication.
