AILaNb2O7:A new series of layered perovskites exhibiting ion exchange and intercalation behaviour

A new series of layered perovskite oxides, AILaNb2O7 (A = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, NH4) constituting n = 2 members of the family A A′n−1BnO3n+1, has been prepared. Their structure consists of double perovskite slabs interleaved by A atoms. Hydrated HLaNb2O7 is formed by topotactic proton exchange of the A atoms in ALaNb2O7 (A = K, Rb, Cs). The hydrate readily loses water to give anhydrous HLaNb2O7 which is isostructural with RbLaNb2O7. HLaNb2O7 exhibits Bronsted acidity forming intercalation compounds with bases such as n-octylamine and pyridine.

THE DRINKING DRIVER is a guide for listeners to the Adult Education radio series ONE FOR THE ROAD, a five-part series on drink-driving and Australia’s road toll. ONE FOR THE ROAD was produced by Lee Parker and Julie Levi, with assistance from the Federal Office of Road Safety in Canberra. The five programs, presented by Lee Parker were first broadcast on ABC Radio National in January 1989, and repeated on Radio National and Regional Stations across Australia in April/May 1989. Macadamia Regional Variety Trials Series 3 - Phase 2

Regional variety trials (RVT) established in 1983 and again in 1997 identified superior varieties for the macadamia industry. From the 1983 trials, guidelines were developed to assist growers to select the most appropriate new varieties for their particular orchards and many of these superior varieties have been enthusiastically adopted by industry. This is also being done for varieties in the 1997 trials. Many of the best cultivars have already been adopted by growers on the basis of annual reports of yield and quality. Industry development over the next 10 to 20 years will be largely dependent on new, superior varieties selected in these RVT5, including new selections from the macadamia industry breeding program.

Stochastic Modeling of an Aircraft Traversing a Runway Using Time Series Analysis

Time series, from a narrow point of view, is a sequence of observations on a stochastic process made at discrete and equally spaced time intervals. Its future behavior can be predicted by identifying, fitting, and confirming a mathematical model. In this paper, time series analysis is applied to problems concerning runwayinduced vibrations of an aircraft. A simple mathematical model based on this technique is fitted to obtain the impulse response coefficients of an aircraft system considered as a whole for a particular type of operation. Using this model, the output which is the aircraft response can be obtained with lesser computation time for any runway profile as the input.

Perturbation expansions and series acceleration procedures: Part-II. Extrapolation techniques

Three new procedures for the extrapolation of series coefficients from a given power series expansion are proposed. They are based on (i) a novel resummation identity, (ii) parametrised Euler transformation (pet) and (iii) a modifiedpet. Several examples taken from the Ising model series expansions, ferrimagnetic systems, etc., are illustrated. Apart from these applications, the higher order virial coefficients for hard spheres and hard discs have also been evaluated using the new techniques and these are compared with the estimates obtained by other methods. A satisfactory agreement is revealed between the two.

Structural adaptability in the system Bi2O3 - WO3 : Higher members of the homologous series Bi2WnO3n+3

The ultramicrostructure of phases with n = 1, 2 and 3 in the hypothetical series Bi2WnO3n+3 has been investigated by high resolution electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray emission spectroscopy. For n = 1 and 2, well ordered phases with the predicted compositions have been obtained, but for n = 3, a severely disordered assemblage containing intergrowths of the two known structures and strips of the n = 3 member is produced. No evidence for ordered structures with n > 2 has yet been obtained.

A rational approach to the synthesis of one-dimensional acoustic filters

The velocity ratio algorithm developed from a heuristic study of transfer matrix multiplication has been employed to bring out the relative effects of the elements constituting a linear, one-dimensional acoustic filter, the overall dimensions of which are fixed, and synthesize a suitable straight-through configuration for a low-pass, wide-band, non-dissipative acoustic filter. The potential of the foregoing approach in applications to the rational design of practical acoustic filters such as automotive mufflers is indicated.
