Advanced bus-clamping switching sequences, which employ an active vector twice in a subcycle, are used to reduce line current distortion and switching loss in a space vector modulated voltage source converter. This study evaluates minimum switching loss pulse width modulation (MSLPWM), which is a combination of such sequences, for static reactive power compensator (STATCOM) application. It is shown that MSLPWM results in a significant reduction in device loss over conventional space vector pulse width modulation. Experimental verification is presented at different power levels of up to 150 kVA.

The superior catalytic activity along with improved CO tolerance for formic acid electro-oxidation has been demonstrated on a NiO-decorated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) catalyst. The cyclic voltammetry response of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst elucidates improved CO tolerance and follows direct oxidation pathway. It is probably due to the beneficial effect of residual oxygen groups on rGO support which is supported by FT-IR spectrum. A strong interaction of rGO support with NiO nanoparticles facilitates the removal of CO from the catalyst surface. The chronoamperometric response indicates a higher catalytic activity and stability of rGO-NiO/Pt catalyst than the NiO/Pt and unmodified Pt electrode catalyst for a prolonged time of continuous oxidation of formic acid. Silver nanoparticles-anchored reduced graphene oxide (Ag-RGO) is prepared by simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and Ag+ ions in an aqueous medium by ethylene glycol as the reducing agent. Ag particles of average size of 4.7 nm were uniformly distributed on the RGO sheets. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is studied on Ag-RGO catalyst in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes by using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. As the interest in non-aqueous electrolyte is to study the catalytic performance of Ag-RGO for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells, these cells are assembled and characterized. Li-O-2 cells with Ag-RGO as the oxygen electrode catalyst are subjected to charge-discharge cycling at several current densities. A discharge capacity of 11 950 mA h g(-1) (11.29 mA h cm(-2)) is obtained initially at low current density. Although there is a decrease in the capacity on repeated discharge-charge cycling initially, a stable capacity is observed for about 30 cycles. The results indicate that Ag-RGO is a suitable catalyst for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells.

The catalytic performance of metals can be enhanced by intimately alloying different metals with Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO). In this work, we have demonstrated a simplistic in situ one-step reduction approach for the synthesis of RGO/Pt-Ni nanocatalysts with different atomic ratios of Pt and Ni, without using any capping agent. The physical properties of the as-synthesized nanocatalysts have been systematically investigated by XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, EDX, ICP-AES, and TEM. The composition dependent magnetic properties of the RGO/Pt-Ni nanocatalysts were investigated at 5 and 300 K, respectively. The results confirm that the RGO/Pt-Ni nanocatalysts show a super-paramagnetic nature at room temperature in all compositions. Furthermore, the catalytic activities of the RGO/Pt-Ni nanocatalysts were investigated by analyzing the reduction of p-nitrophenol, and the reduction rate was found to be susceptible to the composition of Pt and Ni. Moreover, it has been found that RGO/Pt-Ni nanocatalysts show superior catalytic activity compared with the bare Pt-Ni of the same composition. Interestingly, the nanocatalysts can be readily recycled by a strong magnet and reused for the next reactions.

Towards ultrafast optoelectronic applications of single and a few layer reduced graphene oxide (RGO), we study time domain terahertz spectroscopy and optical pump induced changes in terahertz conductivity of self-supported RGO membrane in the spectral window of 0.5-3.5 THz. The real and imaginary parts of conductivity spectra clearly reveal low frequency resonances, attributed to the energy gaps due to the van Hove singularities in the density of states flanking the Dirac points arising due to the relative rotation of the graphene layers. Further, optical pump induced terahertz conductivity is positive, pointing to the dominance of intraband scattering processes. The relaxation dynamics of the photo-excited carriers consists of three cooling pathways: the faster (similar to 450 fs) one due to optical phonon emission followed by disorder mediated large momentum and large energy acoustic phonon emission with a time constant of a few ps (called the super-collision mechanism) and a very large time (similar to 100 ps) arising from the deep trap states. The frequency dependence of the dynamic conductivity at different delay times is analyzed in term of Drude-Smith model. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The partially exfoliated and reduced graphite oxide (PE-RGO) is prepared by low temperature thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide under air atmosphere. A symmetric carbon/carbon supercapacitor is studied in a Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The discharge capacitance is 92 F g(-1), when symmetric cell is cycled between the potential ranges from 0 to 1.6 V. This system demonstrates a stable charge/discharge cycle behavior up to 3000 cycles when the cell is operated at a voltage window of 1.6 V. The utilization ratio of potential window is 90% for this system is attributed to the more negative value of electrodes potential when the cell voltage is set to 0 V. The low-temperature exfoliation approach is convenient for mass production of graphenes at low cost and it can be used as electrode material for energy storage applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A label-free biosensor has been fabricated using a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and anatase titania (ant-TiO2) nanocomposite, electrophoretically deposited onto an indium tin oxide coated glass substrate. The RGO-ant-TiO2 nanocomposite has been functionalized with protein (horseradish peroxidase) conjugated antibodies for the specific recognition and detection of Vibrio cholerae. The presence of Ab-Vc on the RGO-ant-TiO2 nanocomposite has been confirmed using electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical studies relating to the fabricated Ab-Vc/RGO-ant-TiO2/ITO immunoelectrode have been conducted to investigate the binding kinetics. This immunosensor exhibits improved biosensing properties in the detection of Vibrio cholerae, with a sensitivity of 18.17 x 10(6) F mol(-1) L-1 m(-2) in the detection range of 0.12-5.4 nmol L-1, and a low detection limit of 0.12 nmol L-1. The association (k(a)), dissociation (k(d)) and equilibrium rate constants have been estimated to be 0.07 nM, 0.002 nM and 0.41 nM, respectively. This Ab-Vc/RGO-ant-TiO2/ITO immunoelectrode could be a suitable platform for the development of compact diagnostic devices.

Inhibition of electron-hole pair recombination is the most desirable solution for stimulating photocatalytic activity in semiconductor nanostructures. To implement this, herein we study the photocatalytic efficiency of elemental Au, Pd and bimetallic AuPd nanoalloy decorated pristine and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybridized ZnO nanorods for degrading rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye. Fabrication of Au, Pd and AuPd nanoalloy on pristine and RGO modified ZnO nanorods is simple and more importantly surfactant or polymer free. AuPd nanoalloyed ZnO-RGO nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic activity for degrading dye than both Au and Pd hybridized ones, indicating the promising potential of bimetallic nanoalloys over elemental components. A non-monotonic dependence on the composite composition was found by analyzing photodegradation efficiency of a series of ZnO-RGO-AuPd hybrid nanostructures with different weight percentages of RGO. The hybrid nanostructure ZnO-RGO (5 wt%)-AuPd (1 wt%) exhibits highest photodegradation efficiency (similar to 100% degradation in 20 min) with an improvement in rate constant (k) by a factor of 10 compared to that of the ZnO-RGO nanocomposite. The enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is attributed to the better separation of photogenerated charge carriers in photocatalysts thereby suggesting possible usefulness in a broad range of applications, such as sensing, photocatalysis and solar energy conversion.

There has been a continuous surge toward developing new biopolymers that exhibit better in vivo biocompatibility properties in terms of demonstrating a reduced foreign body response (FBR). One approach to mitigate the undesired FBR is to develop an implant capable of releasing anti-inflammatory molecules in a sustained manner over a long time period. Implants causing inflammation are also more susceptible to infection. In this article, the in vivo biocompatibility of a novel, biodegradable salicylic acid releasing polyester (SAP) has been investigated by subcutaneous implantation in a mouse model. The tissue response to SAP was compared with that of a widely used biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), as a control over three time points: 2, 4, and 16 weeks postimplantation. A long-term in vitro study illustrates a continuous, linear (zero order) release of salicylic acid with a cumulative mass percent release rate of 7.34 x 10(-4) h(-1) over similar to 1.5-17 months. On the basis of physicochemical analysis, surface erosion for SAP and bulk erosion for PLGA have been confirmed as their dominant degradation modes in vivo. On the basis of the histomorphometrical analysis of inflammatory cell densities and collagen distribution as well as quantification of proinflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta), a reduced foreign body response toward SAP with respect to that generated by PLGA has been unambiguously established. The favorable in vivo tissue response to SAP, as manifest from the uniform and well-vascularized encapsulation around the implant, is consistent with the decrease in inflammatory cell density and increase in angiogenesis with time. The above observations, together with the demonstration of long-term and sustained release of salicylic acid, establish the potential use of SAP for applications in improved matrices for tissue engineering and chronic wound healing.

Here, we demonstrate a Si-mediated environmentally friendly reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the fabrication of its hybrids with multiwall carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. The reduction of GO is facilitated by nascent hydrogen generated by the reaction between Si and KOH at similar to 60 degrees C. The overall process takes 5 to 7 minutes and 10 to 15 mu m of Si is consumed each time. We show that Si can be used multiple times and the rGO based hybrids can be used for electrode materials.

This paper develops a fully coupled time domain Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approach to model unsteady combustion dynamics in a backward facing step combustor The acoustic field equations are projected onto the canonical acoustic eigenmodes of the systems to obtain a coupled system of modal evolution equations. The heat release response of the flame is modelled using the G-equation approach. Vortical velocity fluctuations that arise due to shear layer rollup downstream of the step are modelled using a simplified 1D-advection equation whose phase speed is determined from a linear, local, temporal stability analysis of the shear layer just downstream of the step. The hydrodynamic stability analysis reveals a abrupt change in the value of disturbance phase speed from unity for Re < Re-crit to 0.5 for Re > Re-crit, where Remit for the present geometry was found to be approximate to 10425. The results for self-excited flame response show highly wrinkled flame shapes that are qualitatively similar to those seen in prior experiments of acoustically forced flames. The effect of constructive and destructive interference between the two contributions to flame surface wrinkling results in high amplitude wrinkles for the case when K-c -> 1.

Dynamic power dissipation due to redundant switching is an important metric in data-path design. This paper focuses on the use of ingenious operand isolation circuits for low power design. Operand isolation attempts to reduce switching by clamping or latching the output of a first level of combinational circuit. This paper presents a novel method using power supply switching wherein both PMOS and NMOS stacks of a circuit are connected to the same power supply. Thus, the output gets clamped or latched to the power supply value with minimal leakage. The proposed circuits make use of only two transistors to clamp the entire Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) block. Also, the latch-based designs have higher drive strength in comparison to the existing methods. Simulation results have shown considerable area reduction in comparison to the existing techniques without increasing timing overhead.

In this paper, for the first time, we have reported the novel synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) dendrite kind of nanomaterial. The proposed r-GO dendrite possesses multifunctional properties in various fields of sensing and separation. The dendrite was synthesized by chemical reaction in different steps. Initially, the r-GO sheet was conjugated with silane group modified magnetic nanoparticle, resulting in nanoparticle decorated r-GO. The above r-GO sheet was further reacted with a new r-GO sheet, resulting in the formation of r-GO dendrite type of structure. Multifunctional behavior of this r-GO dendrite structure was studied by different methods. First, magnetic properties were studied by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and it was found that dendrite structure shows good magnetic susceptibility (180.2 emu/g). The proposed r-GO dendrite also shows a very good antibacterial behavior for Escherichia coli and excellent electrochemical behavior towards ferrocyanide probe molecule. Along with these, it also acts as a substrate for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer for europium metal ion, a lanthanide. The proposed imprinted sensor shows a very high selectivity and sensitivity for europium metal ion (limit of detection= 0.019 mu g L-1) in aqueous as well as real samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) noise is one of the major issues during the design of the grid-tied power converters. Presence of high dv/dt in Common Mode (CM) voltage, excites the parasitic capacitances and causes injection of narrow peaky current to ground. This results in high EMI noise level. A topology consisting of a single phase PWM-rectifier with LCL filter, utilising bipolar PWM method is proposed which reduces the EMI noise level by more than 30dB. This filter topology is shown to be insensitive to the switching delays between the legs of the inverter. The proposed topology eliminates high dv/dt from the dc-bus CM voltage by making it sinusoidal. Hence, the high frequency CM current injection to ground is minimized.
