The morphological development and crystallization behavior of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) in miscible mixtures of PCL and poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated by optical microscopy as a function of the mixture composition and crystallization temperature. The results indicated that the degree of crystallinity of PCL was independent of the mixture composition upon melt crystallization because the glass-transition temperatures of the mixtures were much lower than the crystallization temperature of PCL. The radii of the PCL spherulites increased linearly with time at crystallization temperatures ranging from 42 to 49 degrees C. The isothermal growth rates of PCL spherulites decreased with the amount of the amorphous PVME components in the mixtures. Accounting for the miscibility of PCL/PVME mixtures, the radial growth rates of PCL spherulites were well described by a kinetic equation involving the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter and the free energy for the nuclei formation in such a way that the theoretical calculations were in good agreement with the experimental data. From the analysis of the equilibrium melting point depression, the interaction energy density of the PVME/PCL system was calculated to be -3.95 J/cm(3).

Reaction of two equivalents of tetrahydrofurfuryl indenyl lithium with anhydrous lanthanide trichlorides in THF afforded bis(tetrahydrofurfurylindenyl) lanthanide chlorides (C4H7OCH2C9H6)(2)LnCl, Ln=La(l), Pr(2), Lu(3). Complexes I and 3 are characterized by single-crystal analysis. The results of crystal structural determination reveal that they are 9-coordinate monomeric intramolecular complexes with a trans arrangement of both the sidearms and indenyl rings in the solid state. The effects of rare earth ionic radii on the structures Of (C4H7OCH2C9H6)(2)LnCl are discussed.

The toughness of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) blends was studied over wide ranges of EPDM content and temperature. In order to study the effect of notch radius (R), the toughness of the samples with different notch radii was determined from Izod impact test. The results showed that both toughness and brittle-ductile transition (BDT) of the blends were a function of R, respectively. At test temperatures, the toughness tended to decrease with increasing 1/R for various PP/EPDM blends. Moreover, the brittle-ductile transition temperature (T-BT) increased with increasing 1/R, whereas the critical interparticle distance (IDc) reduced with increasing 1/R. Finally, it was found that the different curves of IDc versus test temperature (T) for different notches reduced down to a master curve if plotting IDc versus T-BT(m)-T, where T-BT(m) was the T-BT of PP itself for a given notch, indicating that T-BT(m)-T was a more universal parameter that determined the BDT of polymers. This conclusion was well in agreement with the theoretical prediction.

An empirical method based on chemical bond theory for the estimation of the lattice energy for ionic crystals has been proposed. The lattice energy contributions have been partitioned into bond dependent terms. For an individual bond, the lattice energy contribution made by it has been separated into ionic and covalent parts. Our calculated values of lattice energies agree well with available experimental and theoretical values for diverse ionic crystals. This method, which requires detailed crystallographic information and elaborate computation, might be extended and possibly yield further insights with respect to bond properties of materials.

A novel method for fabrication of nanometer-sized electrodes and tips suitable for scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is reported. A fine etched Pt wire is coated with polyimide, which was produced by polymerization on the Pt surface initiated by heat. This method can prepare electrodes with effective radii varying from a few to hundreds of nanometers. Scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and SECM were used to characterize these electrodes. Well-defined steady-state voltammograms could be obtained in aqueous or in 1,2-dichloroethane solutions. Ibis method produced the nanoelectrodes with exposed Pit on the apex, and they can also be employed as the nanotips for SECM investigations. Different sizes of Pt nanotips made by this method were employed to evaluate the kinetics of the redox reaction of Ru(NH3)6(3+) on the surface of a large Pt electrode by SECM, and the standard rate constant kappa (o) of this system was calculated from the best fit of the SECM approach curve. This result is similar to the values obtained by analysis of the obtained voltammetric data.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients for ethylamine in heavy water (D2O) and in light water (H2O) have been measured in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz at 25 degrees C. A single relaxational process has been observed in these two kinds of solutions. From the concentration dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters, and following the reaction mechanism proposed by Eigen et al. for ethylamine in H2O, the causes of the relaxations have been attributed to a perturbation of an equilibrium associated with a deuteron or proton transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been estimated from deuterioxide or hydroxide ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency, and the kinetic isotope effects have been determined. In addition, the standard volume changes of the reactions have been calculated from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength, and the adiabatic compressibility has also been determined from the density and sound velocity for ethylamine in D2O and in H2O, respectively. These results are compared with those for propylamine and butylamine and are discussed in relation to the different kinetic properties between D2O and H2O, the reaction radii derived by Debye theory, and the structural properties of the reaction intermediate.

The influence of muffin-tin approximation on energy band gap was studied using LMTO-ASA (Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital-Atomic Sphere Approximation) approach. Since the diverse data are available for LaX(X=N, P, As, Sb), they are presented in our research as an example in order to test the reliability of our results. Four groups of muffin-tin radii were chosen, they were the fitted muffin-tin radii based on the optical properties of the crystals (the first), 1 : 1 for La : X(the second), 1.5 : 1 for La : X(the third), and a group of radii derived by making the charge in the interstitial space to be zero(the fourth). The results show that the fitted muffin-tin radii (the first group) give the best results compared with experimental values, and the predicted energy band gaps are very sensitive to the choice of muffin-tin radius in comparison with the other groups. The second and the third delivered results somewhere in between, while the fourth provided the worst results compared with the other groups. For the same crystal, with the increase of muffin-tin radius of lanthanum, the calculated energy band gaps decreased, going from semi-conductor to semimetal. This again clearly indicated the sensitivity of energy band structure on muffin-tin approximation.

Covalent radii of the bonding elements have strong effects on the linear electro-optic coefficients of zinc blende crystals; these effects can be quantitatively determined by investigating the relation between the difference in the atomic sizes rho and the magnitude of the linear electro-optic tensor coefficient r(41). It is interesting to note that for the same cation Zn2+, Ga3+, or In3+ the magnitude of r(41) increases with increased covalent radius of the bonded anion r(beta). Especially with the increasing tendency of the parameter rho, the magnitude of r(41) of crystals that have a same cation will increase suddenly when the value of r(beta) becomes larger. The technique of high-temperature high-pressure extraction with pyridine has been successfully utilized to extract a wide variety of endohedral rare-earth fullerenes of the type Ln@C-2n (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb). Ln@C-80, Ln@C-82, and Ln(2)@C-80 for most of the rare-earth metals can be produced with high-yield and selectively extracted from the carbon-are evaporation soot. Metallofullerenes containing Sm, Eu, and Yb (which could have +2 oxidation states) are especially difficult to extract. Some possible reasons for the high-yield extraction are discussed. The laser desorption mass spectrometric characterization results indicate a relationship between the extraction yields of metallofullerenes and the oxidation states and ionic radii of the rare-earths.

A theoretical method has been set up to calculate the electrooptic tensor coefficients r(ijk), based on the Phillips-Van Vechten (PV) dielectric theory and the Levine bond charge model, Starting from the crystal structure data and only introducing the experimentally determined optical permittivity and dielectric constant, the electro-optic tensor coefficients r(ijk) can be quantitatively predicted, The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experiment in the case of zinc blende and wurtzite crystals, For zinc blende crystals, the effects of covalent radii on the linear electro-optic coefficients are discussed. Probe beam deflection(PBD) technique together with electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry was used to study the ion exchange in prussian blue(PB) film and its analogue indium hexacyanoferrate (InHCF) chemically modified electrodes, The ion exchange mechanism of PB was verified as following: K2Fe2+FeI(CN)(6)(-e--K+)reversible arrow(+e-+K+)KFe(3+)Fe(I)(CN)(6)(-xe--xK+)reversible arrow(+xe-+xK+) [Fe3+FeI(CN)(6)](x)[KFe3+FeI(CN)(6)](1-x) where on reduction in contact with an acidic KCl electrolyte, H+ enter PB film before K+. Both the cations and anions participate concurrently in the redox process of InHCF, meanwhile K+ ion plays a major role in the whole charge transfer process of this film with increasing radii of anions.

Quantitative data on the crystallization kinetics of polymorphic polymers can be derived from the investigation of gross spherulitic morphology formed in isothermal conditions. Depending on distance between centers, and the time lag between their formation and relative growth rates, various types of boundary lines can be generated by the impinging of two spherical bodies whose radii increase linearly with time, In polymorphic polymers, different types of spherulites often develop simultaneously at different rates from sporadic or predetermined nuclei. In same cases, the so-called growth transformation, in which a nucleus of the fast growing specie is formed at the tip of an advancing lamella of the slower crystal form, provides an alternative mode of nucleation, It is shown that if only one event of growth transformation takes place at the front of a slow growing body, the fast growing spherulite swallows the parent one and the resultant shape of interspherulitic boundary is described by two symmetrical logarithmic spirals whose parameters can be extracted from micrographs taken at the end of crystallization. These concepts are applied to determine the radial growth rate of gamma form spherulites of polypivalolactone in a wide range of temperatures through analysis of the alpha/gamma interspherulitic profiles formed in isothermal conditions and direct measurement of the growth rate of the alpha counterparts at the same temperature.

The compound [FeCp(Tol)](2)[Ni(mnt)(2)] has been prepared from [FeCp(Tol)]AlCl4 and Na-2[Ni(mnt)(2)]. This new organometallic radical ionic salt has been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR and mass spectroscopy. The X-ray structure of the compound shows there are segregated cation and anion stacks in the perpendicular directions, The molecular anions form a zig-zag stacking along the b axis, and between every two neighbouring anion planes a methyl group of the cation is inserted. This gives rise to a long spacing of 6.87 Angstrom, between the anion planes. The cations stack along the c axis, with the closest spacing of 3.457 Angstrom between the cyclopentadienyl plane and the neighbouring toluene plane, which is shorter than the sum of Van der Wall's radii. Conductivity measurements showed the compound as a semiconductor with a room temperature conductivity of 1.6 X 10(-4) Scm(-1).

The compounds, K_5LnLi_2F_(10)(Ln=La, Gd, Y) were synthesized by solid-state reaction in argon atmosphere. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed that K_5LnLi_2F_(10) is isostructural with K_5NdLi_2F_(10)(KNLF) except K_5YLi_2F_(10). The cell parameters and volumes of K_5LnLi_2F_(10)(Ln=La, Ce, Gd) were calculated. They decrease regularly with radii of La~(3+), Ce~(3+) and Gd~(3+). The excitation and fluorescent spactra of K_5Ce_xLn_(1-x) Li_2F_(10) were determined. It was found that the excitat...

Eddies are frequently observed in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS). However, there have been few studies on vertical structure and temporal-spatial evolution of these eddies. We analyzed the seasonal Luzon Warm Eddy (LWE) based on Argo float data and the merged data products of satellite altimeters of Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1 and European Research Satellites. The analysis shows that the LWE extends vertically to more than 500 m water depth, with a higher temperature anomaly of 5A degrees C and lower salinity anomaly of 0.5 near the thermocline. The current speeds of the LWE are stronger in its uppermost 200 m, with a maximum speed of 0.6 m/s. Sometimes the LWE incorporates mixed waters from the Kuroshio Current and the SCS, and thus has higher thermohaline characteristics than local marine waters. Time series of eddy kinematic parameters show that the radii and shape of the LWE vary during propagation, and its eddy kinetic energy follows a normal distribution. In addition, we used the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) here to analyze seasonal characteristics of the LWE. The results suggest that the LWE generally forms in July, intensifies in August and September, separates from the coast of Luzon in October and propagates westward, and weakens in December and disappears in February. The LWE's westward migration is approximately along 19A degrees N latitude from northwest of Luzon to southeast of Hainan, with a mean speed of 6.6 cm/s.
