Recent increasing applications for cast Al-Si alloys are particularly driven by the need for lightweighting components in the automotive sector. To improve mechanical properties, elements such as strontium, sodium and antimony can be added to modify the eutectic silicon from coarse and plate-like to fine and fibrous morphology. It is only recently being noticed that the morphological transformation resulting from eutectic modification is also accompanied by other, equally significant, but often unexpected changes. These changes can include a 10-fold increase in the eutectic grain size, redistribution of low-melting point phases and porosity as well as surface finish, consequently leading to variations in casting quality. This paper shows the state-of-the-art in understanding the mechanism of eutectic nucleation and growth in Al-Si alloys, inspecting samples, both quenched and uninterrupted, on the macro, micro and nano-scale. It shows that significant variations in eutectic nucleation and growth dynamics occur in AI-Si alloys as a function of the type and amount of modifier elements added. The key role of AIP particles in nucleating silicon is demonstrated. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: We assessed the effect of enteral refeeding on the morphology, gene expression, and contraction of acute open wounds in previously malnourished rats using two different enteral diets. Methods: Adult male isogenic Lewis rats divided into two groups (eutrophic, n = 30; and previously malnourished, 12-15% body weight loss, n = 27) were subjected to cutaneous dorsal wounds and gastrostomy. Control rats received a standard oral diet (AIN-93M chow) plus enteral saline solution. Subject rats received chow plus a standard enteral diet or an enteral diet enriched with arginine and antioxidants. On post-trauma days 7 and 14, wound granulation tissue samples were collected for morphologic analysis using hematoxylin and eosin and picrosirius stain or immunohistochemistry slides and real-time polymerase chain reaction for collagen I and III gene expression. Wound contraction was also evaluated by comparing wound images from days 0,7, and 14. Results: Malnourished control rats had increased intensity and duration of wound inflammation, impaired increase of fibroblast cells contingent on post-trauma days 7 to 14, decreased expression of collagen III, and less wound contraction compared with eutrophic control rats. A specialized enteral diet did not improve wound healing of malnourished rats but did promote wound contraction at post-trauma day 7 in eutrophic rats. Conclusion: Short-term enteral refeeding, even with a specialized diet, failed to protect previously wounded malnourished rats from a prolonged inflammatory phase and impaired healing. Background/Purpose. Posttransplantation portal vein thrombosis (PVT) can have severe health consequences, and portal hypertension and other consequences of the long-term privation of portal inflow to the graft may be hazardous, especially in young children. The Rex shunt has been used successfully to treat PVT patients since 1998. In 2007, we started to perform this surgery in patients with idiopathic PVT and late posttransplantation PVT. Herein we have reported our experience with this technique in acute posttransplantation PVT. Methods. Three patients of ages 12, 15, and 18 months underwent cadaveric (n = 1) or living donor (n = 2) orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). All patients had biliary atresia with portal vein hypoplasia; they developed acute PVT on the first postoperative day. They underwent a mesenteric-portal surgical shunt (Rex shunt) using a left internal jugular vein autograft (n = 2) or cadaveric iliac vein graft (n = 1) on the first postoperative day. Results. The 8-month follow-up has confirmed shunt patency by postoperative Doppler ultrasound. There have been no biliary complications to date. Conclusions. The mesenteric-portal shunt (Rex shunt) using an autograft of the left internal jugular or a cadaveric vein graft should be considered for children with acute PVT after OLT. These children usually have small portal veins; reanastomosis is often unsuccessful. In addition, this technique has the advantage to avoid manipulation of the hepatic hilum and biliary anastomosis. Although this study was based on a limited experience, we concluded that this technique is feasible, with great benefits to and low risks for these patients.

Aims: To determine the occurrence of isolated and recurrent episodes of conductive hearing loss (CHL) during the first two years of life in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Study design, subjects and outcome measures: In a longitudinal clinical study. 187 children were evaluated at 6, 9, 12,15 18 and 24 months of age by visual reinforcement audiometry, tympanometry and auditory brain response system. Results: Of the children with BPD, 54.5% presented with episodes of CHL, as opposed to 34.7% of the children without BPD. This difference was found to be statistically significant. The recurrent or persistent episodes were more frequent among children with BPD (25.7%) than among those without BPD (8.3%). The independent variables that contributed to this finding were small for gestational age and a 5 min Apgar score. Conclusions: Recurrent CHL episodes are more frequent among VLBW infants with BPD than among VLBW infants without BPD. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: Although the influence of respiration on ventricular filling, as evaluated by Doppler technique, and the evaluation of diastolic velocities of mitral valve annulus (MVA), as measured by Doppler tissue imaging (DTI), can provide valuable information for the study of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, the concomitant effects of aging, tidal volume (TV), and respiratory rate (RR) on these velocities have not been quantitatively investigated. Methods: We evaluated 12 normal male volunteers (Group I) aged 20-26 years (mean: 22.8) and 8 normal subjects aged 41 to 54 years old (mean: 45.9) (Group II). Using DTI we measured peak early (E-a) and late (A(a)) velocities of longitudinal axis expansion at lateral and medial MVA. Doppler mitral and tricuspid flow velocities were measured: peak early (E) and late (A) inflow velocity, early (E-i) and late (A(i)) flow integral, and deceleration time of peak early mitral flow velocity (DT). Respiratory cycles were simultaneously recorded at RR of 9, 12, 15, and 18 cycles/min and TV of 600 and 900 mL during respiration (RESP). Results and conclusions: (1) E, A, and A(i) in MV had negligible change during respiration, but E-i was significantly reduced during inspiration; (2) DT reduced slightly with inspiration, but the change was significant only with TV of 900 mL; (3) an important increase of E in right ventricular flow was observed during inspiration; (4) variations of RR and TV did not significantly influence right and left ventricular inflow in normal subjects, in the conditions of this investigation; (5) a significant increase of E-a at medial MVA was documented during inspiration only in young subjects; (6) a significant decrease of A(a) at medial MVA was observed during inspiration in both groups of volunteers; (7) RR and TV did not influence MVA velocities in young and adult subjects; (8) a consistent reduction in E-a and a significant increase in A(a) were observed with increasing age; (9) these changes were more conspicuous and consistent than those documented in ventricular filling when young and middle-age men are compared, suggesting that the DTI is more sensitive to detect changes in diastolic function; and (10) in addition, these data suggest that, for evaluation of diastolic function, in clinical context, it is not necessary to control rigorously RR or TV.

One hundred and fifty-one Erysipelothrix spp. isolates from diseased and carrier swine from Brazil were identified by PCR, submitted to serotyping and analyzed by amplified fragment length polymorphism with a single enzyme (AFLP). Reference strains from Australia and the United Kingdom were also examined. The 151 strains were classified into 18 different serotypes (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24 and 25), being serotype 2b the most frequent (39.7%). By associating serotyping and PCR results, it was possible to identify 146 strains as E. rhusiopathiae and five strains as E. tonsillarum. Despite the fact that for this genus AFLP did not cluster all isolates according to serotype, origin, disease or isolation data, the execution of the technique was easy and fast, demonstrating high discriminatory power. The results produced by the AFLP analysis of Erysipelothrix spp. could also support its use as a discriminatory tool for E. rhusiopathiae and E. tonsillarum species. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Acute infections lead to alterations in behavior, collectively known as sickness behavior. which includes reduction in locomotion, food ingestion, sexual and social behavior, environmental exploration, and sleep profile. Although generally seen as undesired, sickness behavior represents a conserved strategy for animals to overcome disease. Aging process is associated with a variety of changes in immunity, which are referred to as immunosenescence, and include higher mortality by infectious diseases. Few works studied sickness behavior display in old animals. Thus, we sought to investigate the display of sickness related behaviors on aged mice. Adult(3-6 months old), middle-aged (12-15 m) and aged mice (18-22 m)were treated with i.p. LPS (200 mu g/kg) and their behaviors were assessed in the open field and in the elevated plus-maze. Exploratory activity was similar in aged mice treated or not with LPS in both apparati. In the open field, locomotion remained at baseline levels; in the elevated plus-maze, there was a time-dependent decrease in motor activity. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Objective: To assess the temperature variation in the cervical, middle and apical thirds of root external wall, caused by 980-nm diode laser irradiation with different parameters. Methods: The roots of 90 canines, had their canals instrumented and were randomly distributed into 3 groups (n = 30) according to the laser potency (1.5 W, 3.0 W and 5.0 W). Each group was subdivided into 3 (n = 10) according to the frequency (CM, 100 Hz and 1000 Hz), and each subgroup divided into 2 (n = S): dried canal or filled with distilled water. The maximum temperature values were collected by 3 thermocouples located at each third of the root external wall and recorded by digital thermometers. Results: The groups irradiated in the continuous mode (CM) presented the highest values (11.82 +/- 5.78), regardless of the canals were dry or not, which were statistically different (p < 0.01) from those obtained with 100 Hz (6.22 +/- 3.64) and 1000 Hz (6.00 +/- 3.36), which presented no statistical difference between them (p > 0.01). The groups irradiated with 5.0 W presented the greatest temperature variation (12.15 +/- 5.14), followed by 3.0 W (7.88 +/- 3.92) and 1.5 W (4.02 +/- 2.16), differing between them (p < 0.01). The cervical third of the root presented the highest temperature rises (9.68 +/- 5.80), followed by the middle (7.66 +/- 4.87) and apical (6.70 +/- 4.23), with statistical difference among them (p < 0.01). After 30 s from the end of irradiation, all the specimens presented temperature variation lower than 10 degrees C. Conclusions: Application of 980-nm diode laser in the root, at 1.5 W in all operating modes, and 3.0 W, in the pulsed mode, for 20 s, can safely be used in endodontic treatment, irrespective of the presence of humidity. Two studies investigated the development of infants' visual preferences for the human body shape. In Study 1, infants of 12,15 and 18 months were tested in a standard preferential looking experiment, in which they were shown paired line drawings of typical and scrambled bodies. Results indicated that the 18-month-olds had a reliable preference for the scrambled body shapes over typical body shapes, while the younger infants did not show differential responding. In Study 2, 12- and 18-month-olds were tested with the same procedure, except that the typical and scrambled body stimuli were photographic images. The results of Study 2 again indicated that only the 18-month-olds had a reliable preference for the scrambled body shapes. This finding contrasts sharply with infants' precocious preferences for human faces, suggesting that infants' learning about human faces and human bodies follow different developmental trajectories. We present whole-rock and zircon rare earth element (REE) data from two early Archaean gneisses (3.81 Ga and 3.64 Ga) from the Itsaq gneiss complex, south-west Greenland. Both gneisses represent extremely rare examples of unaltered, fresh and relatively undeformed igneous rocks of such antiquity. Cathodoluminescence imaging of their zircons indicates a single crystallisation episode with no evidence for either later metamorphic and/or anatectic reworking or inheritance of earlier grains. Uniform, single-population U/Pb age data confirm the structural simplicity of these zircons. One sample, a 3.64 Ga granodioritic gneiss from the Gothabsfjord, yields a chondrite-normalised REE pattern with a positive slope from La to Lu as well as substantial positive Ce and slight negative Eu anomalies, features generally considered to be typical of igneous zircon. In contrast, the second sample, a 3.81 Ga tonalite from south of the Isua Greenstone Belt, has variable but generally much higher light REE abundances, with similar middle to heavy REE. Calculation of zircon/melt distribution coefficients (D-REE(zircon/melt)) from each sample yields markedly different values for the trivalent REE (i.e. Ce and Eu omitted) and simple application of one set of D-REE(zircon/melt) to model the melt composition for the other sample yields concentrations that are in error by up to two orders of magnitude for the light REE (La-Nd). The observed light REE overabundance in the 3.81 Ga tonalite is a commonly observed feature in terrestrial zircons for which a number of explanations ranging from lattice strain to disequilibrium crystallisation have been proposed and are further investigated herein. Regardless of the cause of light REE overabundance, our study shows that simple application of zircon/melt distribution coefficients is not an unambiguous method for ascertaining original melt composition. In this context, recent studies that use REE data to claim that > 4.3 Ga Hadean detrital zircons originally crystallised from an evolved magma, in turn suggesting the operation of geological processes in the early Earth analogous to those of the present day (e.g. subduction and melting of hydrated oceanic crust), must be regarded with caution. Indeed, comparison of terrestrial Hadean and > 3.9 Ga lunar highland zircons shows remarkable similarities in the light REE, even though subduction processes that have been used to explain the terrestrial zircons have never operated on the Moon. The platelet inhibitory effects of the nitric oxide (NO) donor drug MAHMA NONOate ((Z-1-{N-methyl-N-[6-(N-methylammoniohexyl)amino] diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate) were examined in anaesthetised rats and compared with those of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO; an S-nitrosothiol). Bolus administration of the aggregating agent ADP dose-dependently reduced the number of circulating free platelets. Intravenous infusions of MAHMA NONOate (3-30 nmol/kg/min) dose-dependently inhibited the effect of 0.3 mumol/kg ADP. MAHMA NONOate was approximately 10-fold more potent than GSNO. MAHMA NONOate (0.3-10 nmol/kg/min) also reduced systemic artery pressure and was again 10-fold more potent than GSNO. Thus MAHMA NONOate has both platelet inhibitory and vasodepressor effects in vivo. The dose ranges for these two effects overlapped, although blood pressure was affected at slightly lower doses. The platelet inhibitory effects compared favourably with those of GSNO, even though NONOates generate free radical NO which, in theory, could have been scavenged by haemoglobin. Therefore platelet inhibition may be a useful therapeutic property of NONOates. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
