The limits of stability and extinction of a laminar diffusion flame have been experimentally studied in a two-dimensional laminar boundary layer over a porous flat plate through which n-pentane vapour was uniformly injected. The stability and extinction boundaries are mapped on a plot of free stream oxidant velocity versus fuel injection velocity. Effects of free stream temperature and of dilution of fuel and oxidant on these boundaries have been examined. The results show that there exists a limiting oxidant flux beyond which the diffusion flame cannot be sustained. This limiting oxidant flux has been found to depend_on the free stream oxygen concentration, fuel concentration and injection'velocity of the fuel.

The opposed-jet diffusion flame has been considered with four step reaction kinetics for hydrogenoxygen system. The studies have revealed that the flame broadening reduces and maximum temperature increases as pressure increases. The relative importance of different reaction steps have been brought out in different regions (unstable, near extinction and equilibrium). The present studies have also led to the deduction of the oveall reaction rate constants of an equivalent single step reaction using matching of a certain overall set of parameters for four step reaction scheme and equivalent single step reaction.

The cricket is one of most popular games in the Asian subcontinent and its popularity is increasing every day. The issue of replacement of the cricket ball amidst the matches is always an uncomfortable situation for teams, umpires and even supporters. At present the basis of the replacement is solely on the judgement, experience and expertise of the umpires, which is subjective, controversial and debatable. In this paper, we have attempted a new approach to quantify the number of impacts or impact factor of a 4-piece leather ball used in the Intemational one-day and test cricket matches. This gives a more objective and scientific basis/ criteria for the replacement of the ball. Here, we have used a well known and widely used Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) imaging to capture the dynamics of the thermal profice of the cricket ball, which has been heated for about 15 seconds. The idea behind this approach is the simple observation that an old ball (ball with a few impacts) has different thermal signature/profice compared to the that of a new ball. This could be due to the change in the surface profice and internal structure, minor de-shaping, opening of seam etc. The TIR video and its frames, which is inherently noisy, are restored using Hebbian learning based FIR (sic), which performs optimal smoothing in relatively less number of iteration. We have focussed on the hottest region of the ball i.e., the inner core and tracked its thermal profice dynamics. Finally we have used multi layer perceptron model (MLP) to quantify the impact factor with fairly good accuracy.

The Ball-Larus path-profiling algorithm is an efficient technique to collect acyclic path frequencies of a program. However, longer paths -those extending across loop iterations - describe the runtime behaviour of programs better. We generalize the Ball-Larus profiling algorithm for profiling k-iteration paths - paths that can span up to to k iterations of a loop. We show that it is possible to number suchk-iteration paths perfectly, thus allowing for an efficient profiling algorithm for such longer paths. We also describe a scheme for mixed-mode profiling: profiling different parts of a procedure with different path lengths. Experimental results show that k-iteration profiling is realistic.

Wear of etched near-eutectic aluminium silicon alloy slid against a steel ball under ambient is explored. The sliding velocity is kept low (0.01 m/s) and the nominal contact pressure is varied in a 15-40 MPa range. Four stages of wear are identified; ultra mild wear, mild wear, severe wear and post severe oxidative wear. The first transition is controlled by the protrusions of silicon particles, projecting out of the aluminium alloy matrix. Once these protrusions disappear under pressure and sliding, oxidation and bulk energy dissipation mechanisms take over to institute transitions to other stages of wear. The phenomenological characteristics of wear stages are explored using a variety of techniques including nanoindentation, focused ion beam milling, electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and optical interferometry. The structural features, including preferred orientation and surface morphology of zinc oxide (ZnO) films deposited by combustion flame pyrolysis were investigated as a function of process parameters, which include precursor solution concentration, substrate-nozzle (S-N) distance, gas flow rate, and duration of deposition. In this technique, the precursor droplets react within the flame and form a coating on an amorphous silica substrate held in or near the flame. Depending on the process parameters, the state of decomposition at which the precursor arrives on the substrate varies substantially and this in turn dictates the orientation and microstructure of the films.

In this paper, direct numerical simulation of autoignition in an initially non-premixed medium under isotropic, homogeneous, and decaying turbulence is presented. The pressure-based method developed herein is a spectral implementation of the sequential steps followed in the predictor-corrector type of algorithms; it includes the effects of density fluctuations caused by spatial inhomogeneities ill temperature and species. The velocity and pressure field are solved in the spectral space while the scalars and density field are solved in the physical space. The presented results reveal that the autoignition spots originate and evolve at locations where (1) the composition corresponds to a small range around a specific mixture fraction, and (2) the conditional scaler dissipation rate is low. A careful examination of the data obtained indicates that the autoignition spots originate in the vortex cores, and the hot gases travel outward as combustion progresses. Hence, the applicability of the transient laminar flamelet model for this problem is questioned. The dependence of autoignition characteristics on parameters such as (1) die initial eddy-turnover time and (2) the initial ratio of length scale of scalars to that of velocities are investigated. Certain implications of new results on the conditional moment closure modeling are discussed.

Polyphosphate esters were synthesized by the solution polycondensation of bisphenols with aryl phosphorodichloridates. The polymers were characterized by i.r. and 1H, 13C and 31P n.m.r. spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end group analysis using 1H and 31P n.m.r. spectral data. The thermal stability of the polymers was analysed by thermogravimetry.

Laboratory results of marked-ball wear tests are used to discuss the relative significance of corrosive and abrasive wear in wet grinding. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion current obtained from polarization curves under abrasion. Slurry rheology governs the manner in which ground slurries coat grinding balls, thereby influencing not only the grinding efficiency but also abrasive wear. The effects of percent solids and a grinding aid are illustrated.
