Chagas disease, which is caused by the intracellular parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a neglected illness with 12-14 million reported cases in endemic geographic regions of Latin America. While the disease still represents an important public health problem in these affected areas, the available therapy, which was introduced more than four decades ago, is far from ideal due to its substantial toxicity, its limited effects on different parasite stocks, and its poor activity during the chronic phase of the disease. For the past 15 years, our group, in collaboration with research groups focused on medicinal chemistry, has been working on experimental chemotherapies for Chagas disease, investigating the biological activity, toxicity, selectivity and cellular targets of different classes of compounds on T. cruzi. In this report, we present an overview of these in vitro and in vivo studies, focusing on the most promising classes of compounds with the aim of contributing to the current knowledge of the treatment of Chagas disease and aiding in the development of a new arsenal of candidates with anti-T. cruzi efficacy.

Propolis is a multifunctional material used by bees in the construction and maintenance of their hives. The chemical composition and pharmacological properties have been studied for centuries. Today they represent an important raw material for many health products and constitute a new interdisciplinary area for research. Among others they show important antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities and various pharmacological properties. This paper presents an overview of the scientific literature and patents concerning propolis.

The chemical study of the propolis produced in Teresina city, state of Piaui, resulted in the identification of six cycloartane triterpenoids: isomangiferolic acid, 24-methylenecycloartane-3beta,26-diol, mangiferolic acid, mangiferonic acid, ambonic acid and ambolic acid. The substances were characterized by one and two-dimensional ¹H and 13C NMR analysis.

The physicochemical composition of pure royal jelly as well as of some adulterated samples was analyzed by determining moisture, ash, lipids, nitrogen/proteins, carbohydrates, starch and 10- HDA (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid). The solubility in alkaline medium was used to detect the main frauds for adulterating royal jelly which comprise addition of yogurt, water, egg white, sweet condensed milk mixed with propolis, unripe banana and corn starch slurry.

Phytochemical investigation of a propolis sample from Alto Santo - Ceará, Brazil, allowed identification of triterpenes (lupeol, lupenone, germanicone, canaric acid) and flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol and acacetin), which were identified by spectroscopic data (IR, MS, and NMR, including 2D techniques). This is the first report of canaric acid in propolis. Propolis extract and flavonoids showed antioxidant activity using a DPPH radical scavenging assay.

The composition and biological activities of propolis, a resinous hive product collected by honeybees from various plant sources, depends on various factors such as season and vegetation of the area. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the seasonal effect on the ethanolic extracts of Brazilian propolis (EEP) type 6 and type 12, collected during 6 months in terms of antibacterial activity and phenolic composition. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated by MIC and MBC on S. mutans Ingbritt 1600 and the profile of chemical composition by UV-visible spectrophotometry, HPLC-RF and GC-MS. The results demonstrated that the season in which propolis is collected influences its chemical composition, resulting in modifications in its antibacterial activity.

The essential oils of five samples obtained in different regions of the state of Piaui were analyzed by GC-MS. Ninety-one volatile constituents were tentatively identified and eight were positively identified. The principal components obtained from each sample were: 1,8-cineole, exo-fenchol, terpin-4-ol and fenchone (Teresina), a-pinene, caryophyllene oxide, b-pinene and a-copaene (Pio IX), (E)-caryophyllene, a-copaene, a-pinene, caryophyllene oxide and d-cadinene (Campo Maior), (E)-caryophyllene, a-gurjunene and b-selinene (Pedro II) and (E)-caryophyllene, a-gurjunene, d-cadinene and a-copaene (Lagoa de Sao Francisco). The five samples presented differences in the chemical composition of volatile fractions. The studies pointed out the need of characterizing propolis from Piaui by geographic regions and by seasons (drought and rainy periods).

Propolis is mostly used as hydroalcoholic extract. Recently there has been a growing number of patents dealing with new solvents for preparing propolis extracts. This study aimed to prepare edible oil propolis extracts and compare their chemical composition and biological activity with ethanolic propolis extracts. ESI-MS and spectrophotometric methods were used for qualitative and quantitative analyses, respectively. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by diffusion in agar. Cytotoxicity was tested by MTT assay using tumor cell lines. The oil is able to extract bioactive compounds from propolis. Further studies are needed to improve extraction efficiency and to characterize the active components.

The international organizations CLSI and EUCAST developed reference methodologies for activity evaluation antifungal. The aim of this work was to compare the recommended methodologies by the CLSI and EUCAST in the antifungal activity evaluation of crude extracts of Azadirachta indica and green propolis. The results showed that the MIC values determined by the EUCAST methodology were smaller than that determined by the CLSI. Nevertheless, both methodologies were satisfactory to detect and evaluate antifungal activity of the crude extracts and isolated compounds. The EUCAST methodology showed advantage by making possible to obtain results in less time.

Propolis is a resinous hive product collected by honeybees from various plant sources. It has a complex chemical composition, constituted by various phenolic compounds. Extracts of increasing polarity (n-hexane, chloroform, and ethanol) were obtained from a sample of red propolis from the state of Alagoas. Assays were carried out for determination of contents of phenolics, along with antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The EEP, fractions and sub-fractions showed strong biological activities and were related with phenolic the content compounds contents. The sub-fractions were more bioactive than the EEP and fractions, demonstrating that the antioxidant and antibacterial activities are not a result of synergistic effect between the various chemical compounds in propolis.

The phytochemical investigation of a sample of propolis from Passa Quatro-Minas Gerais State, Brazil, where nine constituents were isolated: a mixture of α- and β-amyrin, lupeol, a mixture of flavonols ramnocitrin and eupalitin, acacetin, 3-prenyl-4-hydroxycinnamic acid, 3,5-diprenyl-4-hydroxycinnamic acid the new compound, the (E)-3-[4-(3-phenylpropanoiloxy)]-3,5-diprenil-cinnamic acid. The structures of the isolated compounds were characterized by 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, MS and IR spectrometry, and comparison with data described in the literature.

A homeopatia pode ser uma alternativa de controle de doenças de plantas pela ativação de genes vegetais responsáveis pela resistência às doenças. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ação dos medicamentos homeopáticos Propolis, Sulphur e Ferrum sulphuricum nas dinamizações 6, 12, 30 e 60CH (escala centesimal hahnemaniana) no controle de Alternaria solani e em variáveis de crescimento. Solução hidroalcóolica 10% e água destilada foram os tratamentos controle. Aos 19 dias após o transplante, a 6 ª folha de cada planta foi tratada e 72 horas após, a 6ª e a 7ª folhas foram inoculadas com A. solani. A severidade da doença foi avaliada e calculada a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD). Foram avaliados volume e massa seca do sistema radicular e massa fresca e seca da parte aérea. Sulphur em 12 e 30CH, Ferrum sulphuricum em 6, 12 e 30CH e Propolis em todas as dinamizações reduziram a AACPD na ordem de 17% a 49%. Sulphur em 60CH e solução hidroalcoólica 10% apresentaram efeito sistêmico na indução de resistência. Nas variáveis de crescimento, Propolis em 30 e 60CH incrementou o volume de raiz em 39% e 33%, a massa fresca da parte aérea em 35% (30CH) e a massa seca da raiz em 38% (30CH). Sulphur em todas as dinamizações aumentou a massa da parte aérea entre 23% a 37%, e em 60CH incrementou em 59% a massa de raízes, o que também ocorreu com Ferrum sulphuricum 60CH (65% de incremento). Esses resultados indicam que os preparados homeopáticos podem controlar a pinta preta e incrementar o crescimento do tomateiro.

Observation colonies containing only young workers from 10 matrix colonies were set up to investigate the genetic aspects involved in task division in Melipona quadrifasciata. Wide variation among origins was observed for all behaviors analyzed, but these differences were significant only for brood cell construction and propolis preparation

Enzymatic senescence processes and browning of fresh cut vegetables negatively affect their sensory properties and nutritional value and finally result in the rejection of affected products by consumers. In order to prevent quality decay, the combined effects of natural antioxidants and storage temperature on peroxidase activity and sensory attributes (overall visual quality, browning and odor) of individual and mixed vegetables for soup (butternut squash, leek and celery) were evaluated. Fresh cut vegetables were treated with antioxidant solutions as tea tree essential oil (15 μl/mL), propolis extract (15 μl/mL) and gallic acid (2 mg/mL) and stored at optimal (5 °C) and abusive (15 °C) temperature for a maximum of 14 days. The application of natural preservatives, plus optimal storage conditions, exerted significant inhibitory effects in peroxidase activity of squash, celery and mixed vegetables throughout the storage. Furthermore, propolis treatment applied on mixed vegetables retarded browning appearance and preserved the visual quality for a longer period when compared to untreated product.
