Hybrid latices of poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) were synthesized via in situ miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of 3 and 6 wt % organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Three different ammonium salts: cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (Dodigen), and distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (Praepagen), were investigated as organic modifiers. Increased affinity for organic liquids was observed after organic modification of the MMT. Stable hybrid latices were obtained even though miniemulsion stability was disturbed to some extent by the presence of the OMMTs during the synthesis. Highly intercalated and exfoliated polymer-MMT nanocomposites films were produced with good MMT dispersion throughout the polymeric matrix. Materials containing MMT modified with the 16 carbons alkyl chain salt (CTAC) resulted in the largest increments of storage modulus, indicating that single chain quaternary salts provide higher increments on mechanical properties. Films presenting exfoliated structure resulted in the largest increments in the onset temperature of decomposition. For the range of OMMT loading studied, the nanocomposite structure influenced more significantly the thermal stability properties of the hybrid material than did the OMMT loading. The film containing 3 wt % MMT modified with the two 18 carbons alkyl chains salt (Praepagen) provided the highest increment of onset temperature of decomposition. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of ultraviolet radiation on the properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was studied. The PHB investigated is produced from microbial fermentation using saccharose from sugarcane as the carbon source to the bacteria. The material was exposed to artificial UV-A radiation for 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks. The photodegradation effect was followed by changes of molecular weight, of chemical and crystalline structures, of thermal, morphological, optical and mechanical properties, as well as of biodegradability. The experimental results showed that PHB undergoes both chain scission and cross-linking reactions, but the continuous decrease in its mechanical properties and the low amount of gel content upon UV exposure indicated that the scission reactions were predominant. Molar mass, melting temperature and crystallinity measurements for two layers of PHB samples with different depth suggested that the material has a strong degradation profile, which was attributed to its dark colour that restricted the transmission of light. Previous photodegradation initially delayed PHB biodegradability, due to the superficial increase in crystallinity seen with UV exposure. The possible reactions taking place during PHB photodegradation were presented and discussed in terms of the infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. A reference peak (internal standard) in the infrared spectra was proposed for PHB photodegradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a very promising biopolymer. In order to improve its processability and decrease its brittleness, PHB/elastomer blends can be prepared. In the work reported, the effect of the addition of a rubbery phase, i.e. ethylene - propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) or poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB), on the properties of PHB was studied. The effects of rubber type and of changing the PHB/elastomer blend processing method on the crystallinity and physical properties of the blends were also investigated. For blends based on PHB, the main role of EPDM is its nucleating effect evidenced by a decrease of crystallization temperature and an increase of crystallinity with increasing EPDM content regardless of the processing route. While EPDM has a weak effect on PHB glass transition temperature, PVB induces a marked decrease of this temperature thank to its plasticizer that swells the PHB amorphous phase. A promising solution to improve the mechanical properties of PHB seems to be the melt-processing of PHB with both plasticizer and EPDM. In fact, the plasticizer is more efficient than the elastomer in decreasing the PHB glass transition temperature and, because of the nucleating effect of EPDM, the decrease of the PHB modulus due to the plasticizer can be counterbalanced. This work investigates the influence of the addition of cerium (IV) ions on the anticorrosion properties of organic-inorganic hybrid coatings applied to passivated tin coated steel. In order to evaluate the specific effect of cerium (IV) addition on nanostructural features of the organic and inorganic phases of the hybrid coating, the hydrolytic polycondensation of silicon alkoxide and the radical polymerization of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) function were induced separately. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by means of linear polarization, Tafel type curves and electrochemical impedance measurements. The impedance results obtained for the hybrid coatings were discussed based on an electrical equivalent circuit used to fit the experimental data. The electrochemical results clearly showed the improvement of the protective properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid coating mainly when the cerium (IV) was added to the organic phase solution precursor, which seemed to be due to the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated siloxane-PMMA film. This article reports experimental results obtained in a laboratory-scale photochemical reactor on the photodegradation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in aqueous solutions by means of the photo-Fenton and H(2)O(2)/UV processes. Dilute water solutions of PEG were fed to a batch reactor, mixed with pertinent reactants, and allowed to react under different conditions. Reaction progress was evaluated by sampling and analyzing the concentration of the total organic carbon (TOC) in solution as a function of the reaction time. Organic acids formed during oxidation were determined by HPLC analyses. The main acids detected in both processes were acetic and formic. Glycolic acid was detected only in the photo-Fenton process, and malonic acid was detected only in the H(2)O(2)/UV treatment, indicating that different reaction paths occur in these processes. The characteristics of both processes are discussed, based on the evolution of the TOC-time curves and the concentration profiles of the monitored organic acids. The experimental results constitute a contribution to the design of industrial processes for the treatment of wastewaters containing soluble polymers with similar properties.

This paper presents the possible alternative removal options for the development of safe drinking water supply in the trace elements affected areas. Arsenic and chromium are two of the most toxic pollutants, introduced into natural waters from a variety of sources and causes various adverse effects on living bodies. Performance of three filter bed method was evaluated in the laboratory. Experiments have been conducted to investigate the sorption of arsenic and chromium on carbon steel and removal of trace elements from drinking water with a household filtration process. The affinity of the arsenic and chromium species for Fe/Fe(3)C (iron/iron carbide) sites is the key factor controlling the removal of the elements. The method is based on the use of powdered block carbon (PBC), powder carbon steel and ball ceramic in the ion-sorption columns as a cleaning process. The PBC modified is a satisfactory and practical sorbent for trace elements (arsenite and chromate) dissolved in water.

A new approach to electrochromics, based on the reversible coating-dissolution of an oxide from an inorganic electrochromic electrolyte consisting of a silver-amine complex in a polymer electrolyte (PEO), has proven successful. The reversible electrodeposition of silver onto indium-tin oxide coated glass (ITO) was investigated and the influence of HClO(4) and KI was evaluated. Several characteristics of the electrolyte Ag-PEO make it suitable for use in electrochromic reversible silver electrodeposition devices, such as visible absorption spectrum with an absorbance variation of 60%, an electrochromic efficiency of 5.2 cm(2) C(-1) and an ionic conductivity 4.4 x 10(-4) S cm(-1). The addition of perchloric acid improved the transparency of Ag-PEO, and potassium iodide (KI) was fundamental in setting up the process of reversible silver electrodeposition in the PEO polymeric matrix. A description of the electrochemical processes implied is presented. A number of approaches focusing on the improvement of system performance are tested. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Inorganic elements analyses of Carapicuiba lake reveal that As, Cr, Pb and Mn are above the recommended drinking water standards. The mean total concentrations of toxic elements in surface water decrease in the order Mn > Cr > Pb > As. At elevated concentrations, toxic elements like Cr can accumulate in soils and enter the food chain, leading to serious health hazards and threatening the long-term sustainability of the local ecosystem. Absorbing materials has often been used to improve water quality. In this investigation three types of material were studied: the natural zeolite (mordenite); synthetic goethite and the powdered block carbon modified. The adsorption of Pb(2+) and Mn(2+) onto natural zeolite as a function of their concentrations was studied at 24 degrees C by varying the metal concentration from 100 to 400 mg L(-1) while keeping all other parameters constant. The low-cost zeolites removed Pb from water without any pretreatment at pH values <6. The maximum adsorption attained was as follows: Pb(2+) 78.7% and Mn(2+) 19.6%. The modified powdered block carbon effectively removed As(V) and Cr(VI) while goethite removed more chromate than arsenate in the pH range 5-6. Results of this study will be used to evaluate the application these materials for the treatment of the Carapicuiba lake`s water.

The partitioning of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) in poly(ethylene glycol)/Na-poly(acrylate) aqueous two-phase systems (PEG/NaPA-ATPS) has been investigated. The aqueous two-phase systems are formed by mixing the polymers with a salt and a protein solution. The protein partitioning in the two-phase system was investigated at 25 degrees C. The concentration of the GFP was measured by fluorimetry. It was found that the partitioning of GFP depends on the salt type, pH and concentration of PEG. The data indicates that GFP partitions more strongly to the PEG phase in presence of Na2SO4 relative to NaCl. Furthermore, the GFP partitions more to the PEG phase at higher pH. The partition to the PEG phase is strongly favoured in systems with larger tie-line lengths (i.e. systems with higher polymer concentrations). The molecular weight of PEG is important since the partition coefficient (K) of GFP gradually decreases with increasing PEG size, from K ca. 300-400 for PEG 400 to K equal to 1.19 for PEG 8000. A separation process was developed where GFP was separated from a homogenate in two extraction steps: the GFP is first partitioned to the PEG phase in a PEG 3000/NaPA 8000 system containing 3 wt% Na2SO4, where the K value of GFP was 8. The GFP is then re-extracted to a salt phase formed by mixing the previous top-phase with a Na2SO4 solution. The K-value of GFP in this back-extraction was 0.22. The total recovery based on the start material was 74%. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The partition of hemoglobin, lysozyme and glucose-6-phospate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in a novel inexpensive aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) composed by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) has been studied. The effect of NaCl and Na2SO4, pH and PEG molecular size on the partitioning has been studied. At high pH (above 9), hemoglobin partitions strongly to the PEG-phase. Although some precipitation of hemoglobin occurs, high recovery values are obtained particularly for lysozyme and G6PDH. The partitioning forces are dominated by the hydrophobic and electrochemical (salt) effects, since the positively charged lysozyme and negatively charged G6PDH partitions to the non-charged PEG and the strongly negatively charged polyacrylate enriched phase, respectively. The present study reports on the preparation and testing of a desoxycholate amphotericin B (D-AMB) sustained delivery system based on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) polymeric blends (Nano-D-AMB) aimed at reducing the number of AMB administrations required to treat mycosis. BALB/c mice were infected with the yeast Paracoccidioides brasiliensis intravenously to mimic the chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis. At 30 days post-infection, the animals were treated with Nano-D-AMB [6 mg/kg of encapsulated D-AMB, intraperitoneally (ip), interval of 72 h] or D-AMB (2 mg/kg, ip, interval of 24 h). Drug efficacy was investigated by the fungal burden recovery from tissues. Toxicity was assessed by renal and hepatic biochemical parameters, physical appearance of the animals and haematological investigation. The control groups used were non-infected and the infected mice mock treated with PBS. Nano-D-AMB presented results comparable to free D-AMB, with a marked antifungal efficacy. The Nano-D-AMB-treated group presented lower loss of body weight and absence of stress sign (piloerection and hypotrichosis) observed after D-AMB treatment. No renal [blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine] or hepatic (pyruvic and oxalacetic glutamic transaminases) biochemical abnormalities were found. The micronucleus assay showed no significant differences in both the micronucleus frequency and percentage of polychromatic erythrocytes for Nano-D-AMB, indicating the absence of genotoxicity and cytotoxic effects. The D-AMB-coated PLGA-DMSA nanoparticle showed antifungal efficacy, fewer undesirable effects and a favourable extended dosing interval. Nano-D-AMB comprises an AMB formulation able to lessen the number of drug administrations. Further studies would elucidate whether Nano-D-AMB would be useful to treat systemic fungal infections such as paracoccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis and cryptococcosis.

The gamma-radiolysis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfuoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) was investigated using solid state F-19 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Chain scission products identified in the polymer were saturated chain ends -CF2CF3 (G = 1.0), methyl ether end groups -CF2OCF3 (G = 0.9), acid end groups -CF2COOH (G = 0.5), and a small amount of terminal unsaturation -CF=CF2 (G = 0.2). A mechanism for the formation of these scission products was proposed and the G value for main chain scission, G(S), was determined to be 1.4. Cross-linking of TFE/PMVE was found to proceed via a Y-linking mechanism. The G value for cross-linking, G(X), was determined to be 0.9. A maximum of 0.2 mol % cross-links were formed under the experimental conditions.

A gas product analysis has been conducted on gamma-irradiated samples of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) by means of gas chromatography. The major volatile products have been identified to be CO, CO2, CH4 and C2H6 for PLA, and CO and CO2 for PGA. In addition, the yield of evolved gases for PLA has been found to be 1.81 for CO2, 0.98 for CO, 0.026 for CH4 and 0.012 for C2H6; and that for PGA to be 1.70 for CO2 and 0.42 for CO. The new chain ends formed due to gamma-induced bond cleavage in PLA have been assigned to CH3-CH2-CO-O- and CH3-CH2-O-CO-, and the G values for formation of these chain ends were found to be 1.9 and 0.6, respectively. The G value for chain scission reported previously of 2.3 is comparable with that for the formation of the propanoic acid end group. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.

The effect of irradiation temperature on the polymer properties was investigated for the fluoroelastomer poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethylvinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE). TFE/PMVE samples were gamma-irradiated to 150 kGy at temperatures ranging from 77 K to 373 K. Analysis of the sol/gel behaviour, tensile properties, and glass transition temperatures indicated that crosslinking commenced in the temperature range 195 to 263 K, for a dose of 150 kGy. The latter temperature was 13 K below the glass transition temperature. Crosslinking remained relatively constant to higher temperatures. Chain scission reactions were found to occur well below the glass transition temperature and increased at higher temperatures. The optimum temperature for the radiation crosslinking of TFE/PMVE, for the temperatures investigated, was 263 K. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The gamma-radiolysis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) was investigated using chemical and mechanical analyses. The polymer was found to form an insoluble network with a dose of gelation of 15.8 kGy. Tensile and glass transition temperature measurements indicated the predominance of crosslinking, with optimal elastomeric properties reached in the dose range of 120 to 200 kGy. Photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopy CPAS) showed the formation of new carboxylic acid end groups on irradiation. These new end groups were shown to decrease the thermal oxidative stability of the crosslinked network as determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the polymer at 77 K indicated the presence of radical precursors. A G-value of 1.1 was determined for radical production at 77 K. Comparison of radical concentrations for a copolymer with a different mole ratio of PMVE, indicated that the PMVE units contribute to scission reactions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
