We report a systematic study of the localized surface plasmon resonance effects on the photoluminescence of Er3+-doped tellurite glasses containing Silver or Gold nanoparticles. The Silver and Gold nanoparticles are obtained by means of reduction of Ag ions (Ag+ -> Ag-0) or Au ions (Au3+ -> Au-0) during the melting process followed by the formation of nanoparticles by heat treatment of the glasses. Absorption and photoluminescence spectra reveal particular features of the interaction between the metallic nanoparticles and Er3+ ions. The photoluminescence enhancement observed is due to dipole coupling of Silver nanoparticles with the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) Er3+ transition and Gold nanoparticles with the H-2(11/2)-> I-4(13/2) (805 nm) and S-4(3/2) -> I-4(13/2) (840 nm) Er3+ transitions. Such process is achieved via an efficient coupling yielding an energy transfer from the nanoparticles to the Er3+ ions, which is confirmed from the theoretical spectra calculated through the decay rate. We studied the spin-polarized charge densities in II-VI-based diluted magnetic superlattices formed of p-doped ZnTe:Mg/ZnTe:TM/ZnTe:Mg non-magnetic/magnetic/non-magnetic layers, with TM standing for transition metal. The calculations were performed within a self-consistent k.p method, in which are also taken into account the exchange correlation effects in the local density approximation. Our results show a limit for the width of the non-magnetic layer for which the difference between the opposite spin charge densities is maximized, indicating the best conditions to obtain full polarization by varying the TM content. We also discuss these effects in the calculated photoluminescence spectra. Our findings point to the possibility of engineering the spin-polarized charge distribution by varying the widths of the magnetic and non-magnetic layers and/or varying the TM concentration in the magnetic layers, thus providing a guide for future experiments.

Site-selective spectroscopy in hexagonal beta-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ has revealed different environments for Er3+ ions (multisite formation). The low-temperature S-4(3/2) -> (I15/2Er3+)-I-4 green emission depends on the excitation wavelength associated with the F-4(7/2) Er3+ level. We have studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the green, red, and blue Er3+ emission upon NIR excitation at similar to 980 nm, in order to establish the role played by energy resonance conditions and the multiple Er3+ sites due to the disordered structure for the upconversion (UC) process (energy tuning). The variation of photoluminescence spectra and lifetimes as a function of pressure and temperature reveals that the origin of the high green UC efficiency of the beta-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ compound is mainly due to the multisite distribution, and the low phonon energy of the host lattice.

ZnO nanofibre networks (NFNs) were grown by vapour transport method on Si-based substrates. One type of substrate was SiO2 thermally grown on Si and another consisted of a Si wafer onto which Si nanowires (NWs) had been grown having Au nanoparticles catalysts. The ZnO-NFN morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy on samples grown at 600 °C and 720 °C substrate temperature, while an focused ion beam was used to study the ZnO NFN/Si NWs/Si and ZnO NFN/SiO2 interfaces. Photoluminescence, electrical conductance and photoconductance of ZnO-NFN was studied for the sample grown on SiO2. The photoluminescence spectra show strong peaks due to exciton recombination and lattice defects. The ZnO-NFN presents quasi-persistent photoconductivity effects and ohmic I-V characteristics which become nonlinear and hysteretic as the applied voltage is increased. The electrical conductance as a function of temperature can be described by a modified three dimensional variable hopping model with nanometer-ranged typical hopping distances.

A simple and scalable chemical approach has been proposed for the generation of 1-dimensional nanostructures of two most important inorganic materials such as zinc oxide and cadmium sulfide. By controlling the growth habit of the nanostructures with manipulated reaction conditions, the diameter and uniformity of the nanowires/nanorods were tailored. We studied extensively optical behavior and structural growth of CdS NWs and ZnO NRs doped ferroelectric liquid crystal Felix-017/100. Due to doping band gap has been changed and several blue shifts occurred in photoluminescence spectra because of nanoconfinement effect and mobility of charges.

We proposed in our previous work V-substituted In2S3 as an intermediate band (IB) material able to enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic cells by combining two photons to achieve a higher energy electron excitation, much like natural photosynthesis. Here this hyper-doped material is tested in a photocatalytic reaction using wavelength-controlled light. The results evidence its ability to use photons with wavelengths of up to 750 nm, i.e. with energy significantly lower than the bandgap (=2.0 eV) of non-substituted In2S3, driving with them the photocatalytic reaction at rates comparable to those of non-substituted In2S3 in its photoactivity range (λ ≤ 650 nm). Photoluminescence spectra evidence that the same bandgap excitation as in V-free In2S3 occurs in V-substituted In2S3 upon illumination with photons in the same sub-bandgap energy range which is effective in photocatalysis, and its linear dependence on light intensity proves that this is not due to a nonlinear optical property. This evidences for the first time that a two-photon process can be active in photocatalysis in a single-phase material. Quantum calculations using GW-type many-body perturbation theory suggest that the new band introduced in the In2S3 gap by V insertion is located closer to the conduction band than to the valence band, so that hot carriers produced by the two-photon process would be of electron type; they also show that the absorption coefficients of both transitions involving the IB are of significant and similar magnitude. The results imply that V-substituted In2S3, besides being photocatalytically active in the whole visible light range (a property which could be used for the production of solar fuels), could make possible photovoltaic cells of improved efficiency.

The optical spectroscopy of a single InAs quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom is studied using a model Hamiltonian that includes the exchange interactions between the spins of the quantum dot electron-hole pair, the Mn atom, and the acceptor hole. Our model permits linking the photoluminescence spectra to the Mn spin states after photon emission. We focus on the relation between the charge state of the Mn, A0 or A−, and the different spectra which result through either band-to-band or band-to-acceptor transitions. We consider both neutral and negatively charged dots. Our model is able to account for recent experimental results on single Mn doped InAs photoluminescence spectra and can be used to account for future experiments in GaAs quantum dots. Similarities and differences with the case of single Mn doped CdTe quantum dots are discussed.

In this article, we investigate the parameters used in the MOCVD growth of GaAsN epilayers on GaAs substrates and some of their microstructures and optical properties. The N incorporation was found to mainly depend on the growth temperature and the fractional 1,1-dimethylhydrazine molar flow. A thin highly strained interface layer was observed between GaAsN and GaAs, which, contrary to previously published results, was not N enriched. The low-temperature (10 K) photoluminescence spectra were composed of several emissions that we attribute to a combination of interband transition and transitions involving localized defect states. We have synthesized ternary InGaAs nanowires on (111)B GaAs surfaces by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Au colloidal nanoparticles were employed to catalyze nanowire growth. We observed the strong influence of nanowire density on nanowire height, tapering, and base shape specific to the nanowires with high In composition. This dependency was attributed to the large difference of diffusion length on (111)B surfaces between In and Ga reaction species, with In being the more mobile species. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis together with high-resolution electron microscopy study of individual InGaAs nanowires shows large In/Ga compositional variation along the nanowire supporting the present diffusion model. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit a red shift with decreasing nanowire density due to the higher degree of In incorporation in more sparsely distributed InGaAs nanowires.

CuAlO2 has been examined as a potential luminescent material by substituting Eu for Al cations in the delafossite structure. CuAlO2:Eu3+ nanofibers have been prepared via electrospinning for the ease of mitigating synthesis requirements and for future optoelectronics and emerging applications. Single-phase CuAlO2 fibers could be obtained at a temperature of 1100 °C in air. The Eu was successfully doped in the delafossite structure and two strong emission bands at ~405 and 610 nm were observed in the photoluminescence spectra. These bands are due to the intrinsic near-band-edge transition of CuAlO2 and the f-f transition of the Eu3+ activator, respectively. Further electrical characterization indicated that these fibers exhibit semiconducting behavior and the introduction of Eu could act as band-edge modifiers, thus changing the thermal activation energies. In light of this study, CuAlO2:Eu3+ fibers with both strong photoluminescence and p-type conductivity could be produced by tailoring the rare earth doping concentrations.
