Carbonyl-iridium half-sandwich compounds, Cp*Ir(CO)(EPh)(2) (E = S, Se), were prepared by the photo-induced reaction of Cp*Ir(CO)(2) with the diphenyl dichalcogenides, E2Ph2, and used as neutral chelating ligands in carbonylmetal complexes such as Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Cr(CO)(4)], Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Mo(CO)(4)] and Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-EPh)(2)[Fe(CO)(3)], respectively. A trimethylphosphane - iridium analogue, Cp*Ir(PMe3)(mu-SeMe)(2)[Cr(CO)(4)], was also obtained. The new heterodimetallic complexes were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular geometry of Cp*Ir(CO)(mu-SePh)(2)[Mo(CO)(4)] has been determined by a single crystal X-ray structure analysis. According to the long Ir...Mo distance (395.3(1) Angstrom), direct metal-metal interactions appear to be absent. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Reaction of YbCl3 with 3 equimolar CpNa (Cp = cyclopentadienide) in THF, followed by treatment with trans-(+/-)-N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine led to the isolation of first mono(cyclopentadienyl) lanthanide Schiff base complex, [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)](2) (mu-THF)(THF) (1). The molecular structure of 1 shows that it is a dimer in which the two [(eta(5)-C5H5)Yb(mu-OC20H20N2O)] units connecting via a bridging THF oxygen and two bridging oxygen atoms from Schiff base ligands. The reaction of anhydrous PrCl3 with Na(C9H7) in 1.2 mole ratio in THF gives [(C9H7)(2)PrCl(THF)](2)1. 1 crystallized in monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c with a = 7.808(2), b = 17.796(6), c = 14.070(4) Angstrom, beta = 93.97(2)degrees, V= 1950.3(9) Angstrom(3), Dcalcd = 1.63 g/cm(3) and Z = 2. Each Pr ion is surrounded by two indenyl, two Cl and one THF in a roughly trigonal bipyramid arrangement with average Pr-C(ring) and Pr-Cl distances of 2.81 and 2.84 Angstrom. The reaction of LaCl3 with Na(C9H7) in 1:3 mole ratio gives (C9H7)(3)LaTHF 2, which crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with unit cell constants a = 21.871(8), b = 10.585(3), c = 23.652(7) Angstrom,beta = 114.62(2)degrees, V = 4977.9 Angstrom(3) and Z = 8. NdCl3 reacts with excess CpNa (Cp=Cyclopentadienyl) in THF, followed by sequent treatment with (S)-(+)-N-(1-phenylethyl)salicylideneamine led to the formation of title compound, [GRAPHICS] The X-ray structure determination shows that it is a dimer with internal C-C bond formation and hydrogen transfer between one of Cp ring and the C=N bond of Schiff base ligand. Three new lanthanide (Ln)-alkylaluminium (Al) bimetallic complexes with the formula [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Ln(mu-CF3CHO2)AIR(2) . 2THF](2) (Ln = Nd, Y, R=i-C4H9 (i-Bu); Ln=Eu, R=C2H5(Et); THF=tetrahydrofuran) were synthesized by the reaction of Ln(CF,CO,), (Ln=Nd, Y) with HAI (i-Bu)(2) and of Eu(CF3CO2)(3) with AlEt(3), respectively. Their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction at 233 K. [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Nd (mu-CF3CHO2)Al(i-Bu)(2) . 2THF](2) (Nd-Al) and [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Y(mu-CF3CHO2)Al(i-Bu)(2) . 2THF](2) (Y-Al) are isomorphous and crystallize in space group with a=12.441(3) Angstrom [12.347(5) Angstrom for Y-Al], b=12.832(3) Angstrom [12.832(4) Angstrom], c=11.334(3) Angstrom [11.292(8) Angstrom], alpha=104.93 (2)degrees [104.45(4)degrees], beta=98.47(2)degrees [98.81(4)degrees], gamma=64.60(2)degrees [64.30(3)degrees], R=0.519 [0.113], R(w)=0.0532 [0.110], Z=1 and [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Eu(CF3CHO2)AlEt(2) . 2THF](2)(Eu-Al) in space group P2(1)/n with a=11.913(6) Angstrom, b=14.051(9) Angstrom, c=17.920(9) Angstrom, alpha=101.88(11)degrees, beta=gamma=90 degrees, R=0.0509, R(w)=0.0471 and Z=2. The six CF3CO2- (including CF3CHO2-) of each complex, among which pairs are equivalent, coordinated to Ln and Al in three patterns: (A) the two oxygen atoms in one of the three CF3CO2- type coordinated to two different Ln; (B) the two oxygen atoms in the second of CF3CO2- type coordinated to Ln and Al, respectively; (C) one of the two oxygen atoms in the third CF3CO2- type bidentately coordinated to two Ln and another oxygen coordinated to Al and one of the two Ln, respectively. Unlike types A and B, in type C the carboxyl carbon with a hydrogen atom bonded to it was found to appear as an sp(3)-hybridized configuration rather than an sp(2)-one. 1D and 2D NMR results further confirmed the existence of such a disproportionated CF3CHO2- ligand. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) could be polymerized by Y-Al or Eu-Al as a single-component catalyst and highly syndiotactic poly(MMA) was obtained. THF could also be polymerized by Y-Al in the presence of a small amount of ECH.

Dinuclear complexes [Mo-2(mu-pyS)(2)(CO)(4)(PPh(3))(2)] (1), [Mo-2(mu-pyS)(2)(CO)(5)(PPh(3))] (2) and a trace quality of trinuclear complex [Mo-3(mu-pyS)(2)(mu(3)-pyS)(2)(CO)(6)] (3) were obtained from the reaction of [Mo(CO)(3)(MeCN)(3)] with pyridine-2-thione (pySH) and PPh(3) in THF. The crystal structures of 1.2C(7)H(8) and 3.7 C7H8 have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Crystals of 1.2C(7)H(8) are monoclinic, space group C2/c and Z = 4, with a = 18.797(3), b = 11.143(4), c = 28.157(7) Angstrom, beta = 101.23(2)degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.050 and Rw = 0.057 for 3146 observed reflections, Crystals of 3.7 C7H8 are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a and Z = 4, with a = 13.912(2), b = 17.161(2), c = 15.577(3) Angstrom, beta = 101.17(1)degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.046 and Rw = 0.051 for 4357 observed reflections. The molecule of 1 consists of two Mo(CO)(2)(PPh(3)) fragments linked by an Mo-Mo bond (2.974(2)Angstrom) and by two doubly-bridging pyS ligands. The compound 3 contains a bent open geometry of three molybdenum atoms (Mo(1)-Mo(2)-Mo(3) angle 122.99(3)degrees) linked by two Mo-Mo bonds (2.943(1) and 2.950(1) Angstrom) and by two doubly- and two triply-bridging pyS ligands.

The compounds O(CH2CH2C5H4)(2)Ln(THF)(2) [Ln = Sm(1), Yb(2)] were synthesized by the reduction of O(CH2CH2C5H4)(2)LnCl with sodium metal in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at room temperature. Recrystallization of 2 from dimethoxyethane (DME) produced the single-crystal O(CH2CH2C5H4)(2)Yb(DME) (3) whose structure has been determined by an X-ray diffraction study. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group Pcab, with a = 14.168(4), b = 13.541(6), c = 19.314(8) Angstrom, Z = 8, D-calc. = 1.66 g cm(-3).

LnCl(3) (Ln = Nd, Gd) reacts with C5H9C5H4Na (or K2C8H8) in THF (C5H9C5H4 = cyclopentylcyclopentadienyl) in the ratio of 1:1 to give (C5H9C5H4)LnCl(2)(THF)(n) (or (C8H8)LnCl(2)(THF)(n)], which further reacts with K2C8H8 (or C5H9C5H4Na) in THF to form the title complexes. If Ln = Nd the complex (C8H8)Nd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2) (a) was obtained: when Ln = Gd the 1:1 complex [(C8H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)][(C5H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2)] (b) was obtained in crystalline form. The crystal structure analysis shows that in (C8H8)Ln(C5H9C5H4)(THF)(2) (Ln = Nd or Gd), the Cyclopentylcyclopentadienyl (eta(5)), cyclooctatetraenyl (eta(8)) and two oxygen atoms from THF are coordinated to Nd3+ (or Gd3+) with coordination number 10. The centroid of the cyclopentadienyl ring (Cp') in C5H9C5H4 group, cyclooctatetraenyl centroid (COT) and two oxygens (THF) form a twisted tetrahedron around Nd3+ (or Gd3+). In (C8H8)Gd(C5H9C5H4)(THF), the cyclopentyl-cyclopentadienyl (eta(5)), cyclooctatetraenyl (eta(8)) and one oxygen atom are coordinated to Gd3+ with the coordination number of 9 and Cp', COT and oxygen atom form a triangular plane around Gd3+, which is almost in the plane (dev. - 0.0144 Angstrom).

The interaction of [(C(5)H(4)R)(2)NdCl.2LiCl] (R = H, Bu(t)) with one equivalent of Li[(CH2)(CH2)PPh(2)] in refluxing tetrahydrofuran gave the purplish-blue complex [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] in 50% yield. The compounds have been fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectroscopy indicated the existence of the following equilibrium: [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] + THF reversible arrow (C(5)H(4)R)(3)Nd(THF) + CH2=P(Me)Ph(2). At room temperature, the exchange between the coordinated and free ylide ligand is slow on the NMR time scale.

The interaction of (C5H5)2SmCl.LiCl with one equivalent of Li[(CH2)(CH2) PPh2] in refluxing tetrahydrofuran gives the yellow complex [(C5H5)3SmCH2P (Me)Ph2] in 30% yield. The compound has been fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods.

The reactions of [Cp2Mo2(CO)4] (1) with 2,2'-dipyridyl disulphide (C5H4NS-)2, 8,8'-diquinolyl disulphide (C9H6NS-)2 and tetramethyl thiuram disulphide (Me2NC(S)S-)2 in toluene solution resulted in the cleavage of the Mo-Mo triple bond to yield molybdenum complexes [CpMo(CO)2(C5H4NS)] (2), [CpMo(CO)2(C9H6NS)] (3) and [CpMo(CO)2(S2CNMe2)] (4), respectively. The molecular structures of 2, 3 . O=PPh3 and 4 were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Crystals of 2 are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, with Z = 4, in a unit cell of dimensions a = 6.448(1), b = 12.616(2), c = 14.772(2) angstrom, beta = 92.85(1)-degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.028 and R(w) = 0.039 for 1357 observed reflections. Crystals of 3 . O=PPh3 are triclinic, space group P1BAR, with Z = 2, in a unit cell of dimensions a = 11.351(3), b = 13.409(3), c = 9.895(2) angstrom, alpha = 94.59(2), beta = 90.35(2), gamma = 78.07(2)-degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.033 and R(w) = 0.037 for 3260 observed reflections. Crystals of 4 are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a and Z = 4 with a = 12.468(5), b = 7.637(2), c = 13.135(4) angstrom, beta = 96.62(3). The structure was refined to R = 0.032 and R(w) = 0.042 for 1698 observed reflections. Each of complexes 2-4 contains a cyclopentadienyl ligand, a cis pair of carbonyls and a chelate ligand (S,N donor or S,S donor). All the compounds have distorted square-pyramid structures.

[(Me4C2Cp2SmCl.MgCl2.3THF)THF]2 was prepared by the reaction of Me4C2Cp2MgCl2.4THF (Cp=C5H4, THF = tetrahydrofuran) with SmCl3 in THF. The crystals belong to triclinic space group P-1 with a 12.149(3), b 13.187(4), c 13.810(5) angstrom, alpha 117.23(2), beta 94.07(2), gamma 62.86(2)-degrees, V = 1723.9(1.0) angstrom3. In the molecular structure of the title compound there is a symmetrical centre and a quadrilateral formed by SM, Mg, Cl1, Cl2 atoms. Two centroids of the cyclopentadienyls, bridged by a tetramethylethano group form with three bridging chlorine atoms (Cl1, Cl2, Cl1a) a pseudo-trigonal bipyramid around Sm. Three oxygen atoms of THF and three chlorine atoMS (Cl1, Cl2, Cl3) constitute a distorted octahedron around Mg.
