Parachlamydia acanthamoebae in domestic cats with and without corneal disease.

Corneal samples of cats with and without corneal diseases were screened with a pan-Chlamydiales PCR and specific PCRs for Parachlamydia, Protochlamydia, Chlamydophila felis, Acanthamoeba and feline herpesviruses (FHV-1). Several corneal samples tested positive for Parachlamydia and related Chlamydiales, indicating cat exposure to these intracellular bacteria.

Tratamentos terapêuticos convencionais no controle do ectoparasita Ichthyophtirius multifiliis em jundiá (Rhamdia quelen)

O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a eficiência de tratamentos convencionais no controle da infestação do ictio no jundiá (Rhamdia quelen). Vinte alevinos (3-6 cm) foram estocados em 28 aquários (10 L) durante 192 horas e submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: controle, formalina comercial (0,2 mL L-1), permanganato de potássio (1,3 mg L-1), sulfato de cobre (0,63 mg L-1), sal comum (10 g L-1), verde de malaquita (0,05 mg L-1) e elevação da temperatura para 32°C. O sulfato de cobre, o sal e a elevação da temperatura reduziram o número de parasitas ao final do experimento, podendo ser utilizados como substitutos do verde de malaquita no controle do ictio no jundiá.

Angiostatic kinase inhibitors to sustain photodynamic angio-occlusion.

Targeted angiostatic therapy receives major attention for the treatment of cancer and exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used as an effective clinical approach for these diseases. As PDT can cause an angiogenic response in the treated tissue, combination of PDT with anti-angiogenic compounds should lead to improved therapy. This study was undertaken to test the clinically used small molecule kinase inhibitors Nexavar® (sorafenib), Tarceva® (erlotinib) and Sutent® (sunitinib) for this purpose, and to compare the results to the combination of Visudyne®-PDT with Avastin® (bevacizumab) treatment. When topically applied to the chicken chorioallantoic membrane at embryo development day (EDD) 7, a clear inhibition of blood vessel development was observed, with sorafenib being most efficient. To investigate the combination with phototherapy, Visudyne®-PDT was first applied on EDD11 to close all <100 μm vessels. Application of angiostatics after PDT resulted in a significant decrease in vessel regrowth in terms of reduced vessel density and number of branching points/mm(2) . As the 50% effective dose (ED50) for all compounds was approximately 10-fold lower, Sorafenib outperformed the other compounds. In vitro, all kinase inhibitors decreased the viability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Sunitinib convincingly inhibited the in vitro migration of endothelial cells. These results suggest the therapeutic potential of these compounds for application in combination with PDT in anti-cancer approaches, and possibly also in the treatment of other diseases where angiogenesis plays an important role.

The IST METRA Project

This article summarizes the main achievementsof the Multi-Element Transmit andReceive Antennas (METRA) Project, an ISTresearch and technological development project carried out between January 2000 and June 2001 by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Center for Personkommunikation of Aalborg University, Nokia Networks, Nokia Mobile Phones, and Vodafone Group Research and Development.The main objective of METRA was the performanceevaluation of multi-antenna terminals incombination with adaptive antennas at the basestation in UMTS communication systems. 1 AMIMO channel sounder was developed that providedrealistic multi-antenna channel measurements.Using these measured data, stochasticchannel models were developed and properly validated.These models were also evaluated inorder to estimate their corresponding channelcapacity. Different MIMO configurations andprocessing schemes were developed for both theFDD and TDD modes of UTRA, and their linkperformance was assessed. Performance evaluationwas completed by system simulations thatillustrated the benefits of MIMO configurationsto the network operator. Implementation cost vs.performance improvement was also covered bythe project, including the base station and terminalmanufacturer and network operator viewpoints.Finally, significant standards contributionswere generated by the project and presented to the pertinent 3GPP working groups.
