Irrational schematic beliefs and psychological distress in caregivers of people with traumatic brain injury

Objective: To investigate the relation between irrational schematic beliefs and psychological distress in caregivers of persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Design: Cross-sectional mail survey. Participants: One hundred sixteen caregivers of persons with TBI living in the Australian states of Victoria and Queensland who were members of community support groups and brain injury associations. Measures: The Irrational Beliefs Inventory, Brief Symptom Inventory, income satisfaction, degree of personality and behavior change in the TBI individual, and injury severity. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses showed that after controlling for the effects of characteristics of the caregiving situation and the individual with TBI, greater adherence to irrational beliefs was related to higher levels of global psychological distress. Specifically, irrational beliefs related to Worrying were associated with all areas of psychological distress. Conclusion: Results support the cognitive theory proposal that irrational beliefs play an important role in the adaptation to TBI caregiving. Findings suggest the inclusion of cognitive therapy strategies in interventions for caregivers.

The leisure satisfaction of people with psychiatric disabilities

Leisure plays a dynamic role in peoples' lives and it would be useful to know how the satisfaction gained from leisure choices relates to personal and social adjustment, mental health and life satisfaction for people with psychiatric ability. Lloyd et al identify the extent of satisfaction derived from leisure activities for people with a mental illness and determine whether or not a standardized measure of leisure satisfaction can be applied to a population of people with mental illness.

Crystallization and preliminary diffraction studies of native and selenomethionine CcmG (CycY, DsbE)

t Disulfide-bond (Dsb) proteins are a family of redox proteins containing a Cys-X-X-Cys motif. They are essential for disulfide-bond exchange in the bacterial periplasm and are necessary for the correct folding and function of many secreted proteins. CcmG (DsbE) is a reducing Dsb protein required for cytochrome c maturation. Crystals of Bradyrhizobium japonicum CcmG have been obtained that diffract X-rays to 1.14 Angstrom resolution. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 35.1, b = 48.2, c = 90.2 Angstrom. Selenomethionine CcmG was expressed without using a methionine auxotroph or methionine-pathway inhibition and was purified without reducing agents.

Establishment of native ecosystems after mining - Australian experience across diverse biogeographic zones

The Australian minerals industry, which is dominated by coal, gold, bauxite, iron ore, base metals and mineral sand operations, is widely scattered across a continent which has a wide range of climatic zones ranging from moist temperate in the south through hot deserts in the centre to moist tropical in the north. There is an emphasis at most mines on establishing native ecosystems after mining, and technologies have had to be developed to ensure successful establishment and stability of these ecosystems under often adverse climatic conditions. This paper describes some of the innovative practices used to establish native ecosystenms in bauxite, mineral sand and coal operations across diverse biogeographic zones. Additionally, brief reference is made to an ecosystem function analysis, which has been developed to assess the success of establishment of these ecosystems. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The very real defence gains, however, were made at the cost of bitter popular resentment over the way those gains were made.

Behaviour rating scales for older people with dementia: which is the best for use by nurses?

There is increasing awareness of the importance of disruptive behaviour in people with dementia and the need for rating scales to accurately and reliably measure this behaviour. When rating scales are to be administered by nurses, scale characteristics must take into account the limitations of the nursing role and the nature of the environment in which nurses work. This paper reviews thirty-one rating scales that have been used to measure behaviour in dementia. From this analysis, five scales were identified as suitable for use by nurses when measuring disruptive behaviour in older people with dementia.

Family dynasties in the Tasmanian native hen (Gallinula mortierii)

For species that form multi-generational and territorial family groups, resource-rich areas are predicted to support family dynasties in which one genetic lineage continuously occupies an area and may even expand to occupy surrounding areas. Data from a long-term study of Tasmanian native hens (Gallinula mortierii) support this prediction. The reproductive success and dispersal patterns of 18 hen lineages were monitored for seven breeding seasons and over several generations. The founder group with the highest average territory quality produced the highest total number of fledged young and the highest number of fledged linear descendants, accounting for 24% of the combined reproductive output of these 18 lineages. In the space of 6 years, this single genetic lineage expanded from one territory to occupy 12 of the 47 territories present in the population. This rate of expansion was over four times the population average for the same period. A multivariate analysis revealed that the success of a genetic lineage depended only on the number of high-quality territories surrounding the founder group. These results further demonstrate the resource-dependent nature of reproductive success in this species, and also highlight the potential importance of family dynasties in other cooperative species with complex social dynamics and dispersal patterns.

Yorta Yorta: The effect of changes in traditional laws and customs in native title determinations

Members of the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal Community v State of Victoria was the first case in which a claim for native title was lodged in a non-remote area of the Australian mainland which was the subject of European settlement at an early stage in Australian history - highlights the difficulties in establishing native title claims in long settled regions of Australia - a failure to recognise the strength of oral tradition in establishing Aboriginal connection with the land.
