For the purpose of postulating some hypotheses about the meaning of death in the historical period in which the poet lived, we will comment some poems by identifying clues which reclaim the period’s moral.

The novel As intermitências da morte, by José Saramago (2005a), presents an imaginary narrative that treats one of the most classical themes of universal literature. Besides that, the novel discusses the question of fictional discourse construction, showing the potentialities (and limits) of language as an intermediation between life and art.

The critic João Alexandre Barbosa, points in the work Agrestes (1981-1985), of the Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto, the presence of individualized death. Thus way, this study proposes to analyse the meanings of lyrism and first-person enunciations, in the work Agrestes, a trace gradually eliminated from Cabral’s discursive field since his first work, Pedra do Sono (1940-1). These elements will clash with João Cabral’s poetics, previously based on the selection of voices and artistic practices consistent with his compositional method, with rigorous sorting values and elimination of any subjectivism. To understand this inconsistency, we propose studying the last part of the work Agrestes, entitled “A indesejada das gentes”, a place where the theme of death is recurrent, as well as the presence of enunciators to set out, even to reveal its feelings about aging and death. The analytical procedure should research the hypothesis of rupture of the inflexible tone of João Cabral’s speech that would follow in respect to the poetic project, a reverse path, starting from objective poetry in the direction of subjective poetry.

The death has been considered a forbidden issue. To develop studies that promote reflections about it allows the enlargement of the understanding as regarding the death as about life in that both are related during the human existence. This research aimed to understand the death’s conceptions and family meanings to three different generations. For this goal, through phenomenological methodology, were achieved individual interviews with adolescents, both his parents and the grandfather, all belonging to the same family. After to understand the participant’s experiences, six thematic categories were created: a) Death’s meanings; b) The death of himself; c) The death of another and/or its possibility; d) Sources of support; e) The family in the death’s presence; f) The life in the death’s inevitability presence. From these categories, the dates were phenomenologically. The participants showed similar reports in several times, confirming the literature that says that the daily life experiences among the family members take the family to form a peculiar way to understand and an interpret their experiences. This identity family, however, did not prevent each participant to develop his particular history based in idiosyncratic elements and associated with the stage of life cycle that it is. The reports showed that the prohibition of death in society is still very present, which prevents that discussions about the issue are present in daily life. This study provided for participants to reflect on their experiences around the phenomenon of death and, consequently, about the inseparable relationship between living and dying. It has also reiterated the literature, showing the similarity of views among the family members of three generations face a vital phenomenon potentially impacting the life cycle of individual and family.

The phenomenological research aims to understand how human beings mean their experiences and allows a detailed investigation of issues related to human life. In order to understand how the death experience within the family has been addressed by studies within phenomenological research perspective, a systematic review of literature was performed based on abstracts indexed in Lilacs, PEPsic, Medline e PsycInfo, by means of the intersection of the keywords: family, death, and phenomenology. Overall, 54 papers were found. Initially, all the papers were subjected to a quantitative analysis, after which 15 were selected for qualitative analysis. The results indicated that studies with grounding in phenomenology addressed three major themes: the experiences, meanings and coping with grief and loss, the family’s relationship with the terminally ill patient, and the experiences of families facing sudden death.

This paper presents the basic trends by which psychoanalytical thought understands the subject of death and mourning: the melancholic identification and the death instinct. The implications of these concepts to the comprehension of death and mourning are discussed, specially showing that the death instinct, differently than a wish to die, must be understood as a traumatic potentiality to the psychic apparatus, which needs to be bound and represented. In this sense, it is argued that the narcissist personality configurations in place on post-modernity lead to violence explosion on the field of culture. One of the results of this process can be traced in the lack of psychic elaboration work of mourning and death, which demonstrate the relevance of the definition of "wide-open death" as a social representation of death nowadays.
