set of energies at different internuclear distances for the ground electronic state and two excited electronic states of NaH molecule have been calculated using valence internally contracted multireference configuration interaction(MRCI) including Davidson correction and three basis sets. Then, a potential energy curve (PEC) for each state was determined by extrapolating MRCI energies to the complete basis sets limit. Based on the PECs, accurate vibrational energy levels and rotational constants were determined. The computational PECs are were fitted to analytical potential energy functions using the Murrell-Sorbie potential function. Then, accurate spectroscopic parameters were calculated. Compared with experimental results, values obtained with the basis set extrapolation yield a potential energy curve that gives accurate vibrational energy levels, rotational constants and spectroscopic parameters for the NaH molecule. In an attempt to ascertain the rate-determining steps (RDS) of TiO2 photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reaction, the PEC oxidation of sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) solution in a TiO2-coated electrode reactor system was monitored by applying the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method. In the meantime, an EIS mathematical model was first established to theoretically simulate the PEC reaction. Based on the EIS model, the theoretical simulation indicates three typical reactions in a PEC oxidation process, which include the charge-transfer-dominated reaction, both the charge-transfer- and adsorption-dominated reaction, and the adsorption-dominated reaction. The experimental results of EIS measurement showed that there was only one arc/semicircle on the EIS plane display when the external bias applied was below 200 mV (vs SCE) in the SSA PEC degradation whereas there were two arcs/semicircles when the externally applied bias exceeded 200 mV (vs SCE). The experimental results have a good agreement with the model simulation. The EIS method in this study provides an easier way to determine the RDS in a PEC oxidation process, which would be helpful to better control the reaction in practice.

Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) from East Pacific Rise (EPR) 13 degrees N are analysed for major and trace elements, both of which show a continuous evolving trend. Positive MgO-Al2O3 and negative MgO-Sc relationships manifest the cotectic crystallization of plagioclase and olivine, which exist with the presence of plagioclase and olivine phenocrysts and the absence of clinopyroxene phenocrysts. However, the fractionation of clinopyroxene is proven by the positive correlation of MgO and CaO. Thus, MORB samples are believed to show a "clinopyroxene paradox". The highest magnesium-bearing MORB sample E13-3B (MgO = 9.52%) is modelled for isobaric crystallization with COMAGMAT at different pressures. Observed CaO/Al2O3 ratios can be derived from E13-3B only by fractional crystallization at pressure > 4 +/- 1 kbar, which necessitates clinopyroxene crystallization and is not consistent with cotectic crystallization of olivine plus plagioclase in the magma chamber (at pressure similar to 1 kbar). The initial compositions of the melt inclusions, which could represent potential parental magmas, are reconstructed by correcting for post-entrapment crystallization (PEC). The simulated crystallization of initial melt inclusions also produce observed CaO/Al2O3 ratios only at > 4 +/- 1 kbar, in which clinopyroxene takes part in crystallization. It is suggested that MORB magmas have experienced clinopyroxene fractionation in the lower crust, in and below the Moho transition zone. The MORB magmas have experienced transition from clinopyroxene+plagioclase+olivine crystallization at > 4 +/- 1 kbar to mainly olivine+plagioclase crystallization at < 1 kbar, which contributes to the explanation of the "clinopyroxene paradox".

This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010. When it is difficult to develop selective ligands within a family of related G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), chemically engineered receptors activated solely by synthetic ligands (RASSLs) are useful alternatives for probing receptor function. In the present work, we explored whether a RASSL of the free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFA2) could be developed on the basis of pharmacological variation between species orthologs. For this, bovine FFA2 was characterized, revealing distinct ligand selectivity compared with human FFA2. Homology modeling and mutational analysis demonstrated a single mutation in human FFA2 of C4.57G resulted in a human FFA2 receptor with ligand selectivity similar to the bovine receptor. This was exploited to generate human FFA2-RASSL by the addition of a second mutation at a known orthosteric ligand interaction site, H6.55Q. The resulting FFA2-RASSL displayed a >100-fold loss of activity to endogenous ligands, while responding to the distinct ligand sorbic acid with pEC(50) values for inhibition of cAMP, 5.83 ± 0.11; Ca(2+) mobilization, 4.63 ± 0.05; ERK phosphorylation, 5.61 ± 0.06; and dynamic mass redistribution, 5.35 ± 0.06. This FFA2-RASSL will be useful in future studies on this receptor and demonstrates that exploitation of pharmacological variation between species orthologs is a powerful method to generate novel chemically engineered GPCRs.-Hudson, B. Objective

Global migration of healthcare workers places responsibility on employers to comply with legal employment rights whilst ensuring patient safety remains the central goal. We describe the pilot of a communication assessment designed for doctors who trained and communicated with patients and colleagues in a different language from that of the host country. It is unique in assessing clinical communication without assessing knowledge.

Methods

A 14-station OSCE was developed using a domain-based marking scheme, covering professional communication and English language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in routine, acute and emotionally challenging contexts, with patients, carers and healthcare teams. Candidates (n = 43), non-UK trained volunteers applying to the UK Foundation Programme, were provided with relevant station information prior to the exam.

Results

The criteria for passing the test included achieving the pass score and passing 10 or more of the 14 stations. Of the 43 candidates, nine failed on the station criteria. Two failed the pass score and also the station criteria. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.866.

Conclusion

This pilot tested ‘proof of concept’ of a new domain-based communication assessment for non-UK trained doctors.

Practice implications

The test would enable employers and regulators to verify communication competence and safety in clinical contexts, independent of clinical knowledge, for doctors who trained in a language different from that of the host country.

Objective: Communication skills can be trained alongside clinical reasoning, history taking or clinical examination skills. This is advocated as a solution to the low transfer of communication skills. Still, students have to integrate the knowledge/skills acquired during different curriculum parts in patient consultations at some point. How do medical students experience these integrated consultations within a simulated environment and in real practice when dealing with responsibility?

Methods: Six focus groups were conducted with (pre-)/clerkship students.

Results: Students were motivated to practice integrated consultations with simulated patients and felt like 'real physicians'. However, their focus on medical problem solving drew attention away from improving their communication skills. Responsibility for real patients triggered students' identity development. This identity formation guided the development of an own consultation style, a process that was hampered by conflicting demands of role models.

Conclusion: Practicing complete consultations results in the dilemma of prioritizing medical problem solving above attention for patient communication. Integrated consultation training advances this dilemma to the pre-clerkship period. During clerkships this dilemma is heightened because real patients trigger empathy and responsibility, which invites students to define their role as doctor.

Practice Implications: When training integrated consultations, educators should pay attention to students' learning priorities and support the development of students' professional identity.

This paper reports a new method for reducing theRadar Cross-Section (RCS) of a metal backed dipole antenna. Numerical simulations are used to show that when the Perfect Electrical Conductor (PEC) is replaced by a carefully designedFrequency Selective Surface (FSS), the electromagnetic performanceof the antenna is similar in band, but the RCS of the structure is significantly lower out of band. The design of the FSSand the return loss, radiation patterns and RCS are presentedfor an antenna which operates at a center frequency of 4 GHzand the results are compared with a conventional metal backed arrangement
