The reported experimental work on the systems Fe-Zn-O and Fe-Zn-Si-O in equilibrium with metallic iron is part of a wider research program that combines experimental and thermodynamic computer modeling techniques to characterize zinc/lead industrial slags and sinters in the system PbO-ZnO-SiO2-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3. Extensive experimental,investigations using high-temperature equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) were carried out. Special experimental; procedures were developed to enable accurate measurements in these ZnO-containing systems to be performed in equilibrium with metallic iron; The systems Fe-Zn-O and FeZn-Si-O were experimentally investigated in equilibrium with metallic iron in the temperature ranges 900 degreesC to 1200 degreesC (1173 to 1473 K) and from 1000 degreesC to 1350 degreesC (1273 to 1623 K), respectively. The liquidus surface in the system Fe-Zn-Si-O in equilibrium with metallic iron was characterized in the composition ranges 0 to 33 wt pet ZnO and 0 to 40 wt pet SiO2. The wustite (Fe,Zn)O, zincite (Zn,Fe)O, willemite (Zn,Fe)(2)SiO4, arid fayalite: (Fe,Zn)(2)SiO4 solid solutions in equilibrium with metallic iron were measured.

Mesoporous Ti-substituted aluminophosphates (AlPOs) with a hexagonal, cubic and lamellar pore structure, characteristic of MCM-41, MCM-48. and MCM-50, respectively, were synthesized. The stability of these mesophases upon template removal was studied. The pore structures, surface properties, and local atom environments of Al, P, and Ti of the hexagonal and cubic Ti-containing mesoporous products were extensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, AAS, XPS, ultraviolet-visible, and adsorption of nitrogen and water vapor techniques while the lamellar mesophase was not further characterized due to its very poor thermal stability. Ti-containing mesoporous AlPO materials show a reasonable thermal stability upon template removal, a hydrophilic surface property, and high porosity showing application potentials in catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons. Coating anatase TiO2 onto three different particle supports, activated carbon (AC), gamma -alumina (Al2O3) and silica gel (SiO2), by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was studied. The effect of the CVD synthesis conditions on the loading rate of anatase TiO2 was investigated. It was found that introducing water vapor during CVD or adsorbing water before CVD was crucial to obtain anatase TiO2 on the surface of the particle supports. The evaporation temperature of precursor, deposition temperature in the reactor, flow rate of carrier gas, and the length of coating time were also important parameters to obtain more uniform and repeatable TiO2 coating. High inflow precursor concentration, high CVD reactor temperature and long coating time tended to cause block problem. Coating TiO2 onto small particles by CVD involved both chemical vapor deposition and particle deposition. It was believed that the latter was the reason for the block problem. In addition, the mechanism of CVD process in this study included two parts, pyrolysis and hydrolysis, and one of them was dominant in the CVD process under different synthesis route. Among the three types of materials, silica gel, with higher surface hydroxyl groups and macropore surface area, was found to be the most efficient support in terms of both anatase TiO2 coating and photocatalytic reaction. The effect of pore structure on the behavior of lithium intercalation into an electrode containing porous V(2)O(5) film has been investigated and compared with the electrode containing a non-porous V(2)O(5) film. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a lamellar structure for both materials. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms, t-plot method, and Scanning Electronic Microscopy show that the route employed for the preparation of mesoporous V(2)O(5) was successful. The electrochemical performance of these matrices as lithium intercalation cathode materials was evaluated. The porous material reaches stability after several cycles more easily compared with the V(2)O(5) xerogel. Lithium intercalation into the porous V(2)O(5) film electrode is crucially influenced by pore surface and film surface irregularity, in contrast with the non-porous surface of the V(2)O(5) xerogel.

Formation of stable thin films of mixed xyloglucan (XG) and alginate (ALG) onto Si/SiO2 wafers was achieved under pH 11.6, 50 mM CaCl2, and at 70 degrees C. XG-ALG films presented mean thickness of (16 +/- 2) nun and globules rich surface, as evidenced by means of ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The adsorption of two glucose/mannose-binding seed (Canavalia ensiformis and Dioclea altissima) lectins, coded here as ConA and DAlt, onto XG-ALG surfaces took place under pH 5. Under this condition both lectins present positive net charge. ConA and DAIt adsorbed irreversibly onto XG-ALG forming homogenous monolayers similar to(4 +/- 1)nm thick. Lectins adsorption was mainly driven by electrostatic interaction between lectins positively charged residues and carboxylated (negatively charged) ALG groups. Adhesion of four serotypes of dengue virus, DENV (1-4), particles to XG-ALG surfaces were observed by ellipsometry and AFM. The attachment of dengue particles onto XG-ALG films might be mediated by (i) H bonding between E protein (located at virus particle surface) polar residues and hydroxyl groups present on XG-ALG surfaces and (ii) electrostatic interaction between E protein positively charged residues and ALG carboxylic groups. DENV-4 serotype presented the weakest adsorption onto XG-ALG surfaces, indicating that E protein on DENV-4 surface presents net charge (amino acid sequence) different from E proteins of other serotypes. All four DENV particles serotypes adsorbed similarly onto lectin films adsorbed. Nevertheless, the addition of 0.005 mol/L of mannose prevented dengue particles from adsorbing onto lectin films. XG-ALG and lectin layers serve as potential materials for the development of diagnostic methods for dengue. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experimental and thermodynamic modeling studies have been carried out on the Zn-Fe-Si-O system. This research is part of a wider program to characterize zinc/lead industrial slags and sinters in the PbO-ZnO-SiO2-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system. Experimental investigations involve high-temperature equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Liquidus temperatures and solid solubilities of the crystalline phases were measured in the temperature range from 1200 °C to 1450 °C (1473 to 1723 K) in the zinc ferrite, zincite, willemite, and tridymite primary-phase fields in the Zn-Fe-Si-O system in air. These equilibrium data for the Zn-Fe-Si-O system in air, combined with previously reported data for this system, were used to obtain an optimized self-consistent set of parameters of thermodynamic models for all phases.

A range of materials is treated in zinc fuming processes to recover metal values and produce benign slag waste products. The selection of the optimum process conditions in these various technologies can be greatly assisted by the use of a chemical thermodynamic model of the system. In this paper the effects of slag chemistry on the liquidus temperatures, subliquidus phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties are described by the F*A*C*T computer package with the new thermodynamic database of the ZnO-PbO-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 system. The implications of these findings for plant practice are discussed.

The synthesis and characterization of high-quality mesoporous silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs) with a hexagonally arranged pore structure and a good thermal stability are described. The influence of some important synthesis parameters including temperature, time, and Si content in the synthesis gel was examined. The local environments of Al, P, and Si were investigated using MAS NMR spectroscopy. The acidity of the mesoporous SAPOs was studied and compared with those of aluminosilicate MCM-41 and SAPO-5. Results show that both the synthesis temperature and time have a significant impact on the formation of mesoporous SAPOs, whereas the presence of Si in the synthesis gel has a direct influence on the structure type and the quality of the resulting mesoporous SAPO materials. High-quality mesoporous SAPOs can be synthesized from the synthesis gels with Si/Al ratio smaller than 0.5 in the presence of cationic surfactants in a weakly basic aqueous solution. The mesoporous SAPO materials show interesting acidity properties, possessing both strong and mild sites. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Low-temperature anneals (1200 degreesC for 40 h) of 8 mol% yttria-stabilised zirconia, prior to the samples being sintered at 1500 degreesC, had the effect of improving the ionic conductivity of the specimens. The presence Of SiO2 in the specimens was shown to be detrimental, however. Irrespective of the SiO2 content, this type of heat treatment also leads to improvements in conductivity. Extensive microstructural analysis provided indication of the mechanism of this phenomenon. This included selective formation of zircon, relief of sintering strain leading to the formation of coherent grain boundaries and segregation effects. We discuss the operation of a new type of optical sensor (MISCam) based on a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure. The operation principle relies on light-induced changes of the band bending and barrier height at the interface between semiconductor and insulator. An image is obtained from the quenching of the ac signal in analogy to the principle of the laser-scanned photodiode (LSP). Lateral resolution depends on the semiconductor material chosen. We have characterised the MIS structures by C-V, I-V, and spectral response measurements testing different types of insulators like a-Si3N4, SiO2, and AlN. The presence of slow interface charges allows for image memory. Colour sensors can be realised by controlling sign and magnitude of the electric fields in the base and the interface region.
