Sol-gel derived PbZrO3 (PZ) thin films have been deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and according to the pseudotetragonal symmetry of PZ, the relatively preferred (110)t oriented phase formation has been noticed. The room temperature P‐E hysteresis loops have been observed to be slim by nature. The slim hysteresis loops are attributed to the [110]t directional antiparallel lattice motion of Pb ions and by the directionality of the applied electric field. Pure PZ formation has been characterized by the dielectric phase transition at 235 °C and antiferroelectric P‐E hysteresis loops at room temperature. Dielectric response has been characterized within a frequency domain of 100 Hz–1 MHz at various temperatures ranging from 40 to 350 °C. Though frequency dispersion of dielectric behaves like a Maxwell–Wagner type of relaxation, ω2 dependency of ac conductivity indicates that there must be G‐C equivalent circuit dominance at high frequency. The presence of trap charges in PZ has been determined by Arrhenius plots of ac conductivity. The temperature dependent n (calculated from the universal power law of ac conductivity) values indicate an anomalous behavior of the trapped charges. This anomaly has been explained by strongly and weakly correlated potential wells of trapped charges and their behavior on thermal activation. The dominance of circuit∕circuits resembling Maxwell–Wagner type has been investigated by logarithmic Nyquist plots at various temperatures and it has been justified that the dielectric dispersion is not from the actual Maxwell–Wagner-type response.

This thesis deals with theoretical modeling of the electrodynamics of auroral ionospheres. In the five research articles forming the main part of the thesis we have concentrated on two main themes: Development of new data-analysis techniques and study of inductive phenomena in the ionospheric electrodynamics. The introductory part of the thesis provides a background for these new results and places them in the wider context of ionospheric research. In this thesis we have developed a new tool (called 1D SECS) for analysing ground based magnetic measurements from a 1-dimensional magnetometer chain (usually aligned in the North-South direction) and a new method for obtaining ionospheric electric field from combined ground based magnetic measurements and estimated ionospheric electric conductance. Both these methods are based on earlier work, but contain important new features: 1D SECS respects the spherical geometry of large scale ionospheric electrojet systems and due to an innovative way of implementing boundary conditions the new method for obtaining electric fields can be applied also at local scale studies. These new calculation methods have been tested using both simulated and real data. The tests indicate that the new methods are more reliable than the previous techniques. Inductive phenomena are intimately related to temporal changes in electric currents. As the large scale ionospheric current systems change relatively slowly, in time scales of several minutes or hours, inductive effects are usually assumed to be negligible. However, during the past ten years, it has been realised that induction can play an important part in some ionospheric phenomena. In this thesis we have studied the role of inductive electric fields and currents in ionospheric electrodynamics. We have formulated the induction problem so that only ionospheric electric parameters are used in the calculations. This is in contrast to previous studies, which require knowledge of the magnetospheric-ionosphere coupling. We have applied our technique to several realistic models of typical auroral phenomena. The results indicate that inductive electric fields and currents are locally important during the most dynamical phenomena (like the westward travelling surge, WTS). In these situations induction may locally contribute up to 20-30% of the total ionospheric electric field and currents. Inductive phenomena do also change the field-aligned currents flowing between the ionosphere and magnetosphere, thus modifying the coupling between the two regions.

A novel multiple turn conformation has been observed for a segment GPGRAFY in the crystal structure of a complex of HIV-1 gp120 V3 loop peptide with the Fab fragment of a neutralizing antibody [Ghiara ct al. (1994) Science 264, 82-85]. A structural motif has been defined for the peptide segment, employing idealized backbone conformations characterized by ranges of virtual C-alpha torsion angles and bond angles. A search of 122 high-resolution protein crystal structures has permitted identification of 24 examples of similar structural motifs. Two major conformational families have been identified, which differ primarily in the conformation at residue 3. The observed conformation at residue 3 in family 1 is left-handed helical (alpha(L)) and that in family 2 is right-handed helical (alpha(R)). Of the 10 examples in family 1, 9 examples have Gly residues at position 3. Of the 12 examples in family 2, 7 examples have Asn/Asp at position 3. Computer modeling of the V3 loop tip sequence using the two backbone conformational families as starting points leads to minimum-energy conformations in which antigenically important side-chains occupy similar spatial arrangements. This stereochemical analysis of the V3 loop tip sequence suggests a rational basis for the design of synthetic analog peptides for use as viral antagonists or synthetic antigens. (C) Munksgaard 1995.

In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) algorithms for a split-phase induction machine (SPIM) are established. An SPIM has two sets of three-phase stator windings, with a shift of thirty electrical degrees between them. The significant contributions of this paper are: 1) two new methods of DTC technique for an SPIM are developed, called Resultant Flux Control Method and Individual Flux Control Method and 2) advantages and disadvantages of both methods are discussed. High torque ripple is a disadvantage for three-phase DTC. It is found that torque ripple in an SPIM can be significantly reduced without increasing the switching frequency.

A voltage source inverter-fed induction motor produces a pulsating torque due to application of nonsinusoidal voltages. Torque pulsation is strongly influenced by the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method employed. Conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) is known to result in less torque ripple than sine-triangle PWM. This paper aims at further reduction in the pulsating torque by employing advanced bus-clamping switching sequences, which apply an active vector twice in a subcycle. This paper proposes a hybrid PWM technique which employs such advanced bus-clamping sequences in conjunction with a conventional switching sequence. The proposed hybrid PWM technique is shown to reduce the torque ripple considerably over CSVPWM along with a marginal reduction in current ripple.

A reciprocal relationship exists between the cytochrome P-450 content and d-aminolaevulinate synthetase activity in adult rats. In young rats the basal d-aminolaevulinate synthetase activity is higher and the cytochrome P-450 content is lower compared with the adult rat liver. Administration of allylisopropylacetamide neither induces the enzyme nor causes degradation of cytochrome P-450 in the young rat liver, unlike adult rat liver. Allylisopropylacetamide fails to induce d-aminolaevulinate synthetase in adrenalectomized–ovariectomized animals or intact animals pretreated with successive doses of the drug, in the absence of cortisol. The cortisol-mediated induction of the enzyme is sensitive to actinomycin D. Allylisopropylacetamide administration degrades microsomal haem but not nuclear haem. Haem does not counteract the decrease in cytochrome P-450 content caused by allylisopropylacetamide administration, but there is evidence for the formation of drug-resistant protein-bound haem in liver microsomal material under these conditions. Phenobarbital induces d-aminolaevulinate synthetase under conditions when there is no breakdown of cytochrome P-450. On the basis of these results and those already published, a model is proposed for the regulation of d-aminolaevulinate synthetase induction in rat liver.

Administration of 3,5-diethoxy carbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC) to mice resulted in a striking increase in the level of δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) synthetase in liver. Although the enzyme activity was primarily localized in mitochondria and postmicrosomal supernatant fluid, a significant level of activity was also detected in purified nuclei. The time course of induction showed a close parallelism between the bound and free enzyme activities with the former always accounting for a higher percentage of the total activity as compared to the latter. Studies with cycloheximide indicated a half-life of around 3 hr for both the bound and free ALA synthetase. Actinomycin D and hemin prevented enzyme induction when administered along with DDC, but when administered 12 hr after DDC treatment Actinomycin D did not lead to a decay of either the bound or free enzyme activity and hemin inhibited the bound enzyme activity but not the free enzyme level. The molecular sizes of the mitochondrial and cytosolic ALA synthetase(s) were found to be similar on sephadex columns.

Here the design and operation of a novel transmission electron microscope (TEM) triboprobe instrument with real-time vision control for advanced in situ electron microscopy is demonstrated. The NanoLAB triboprobe incorporates a new high stiffness coarse slider design for increased stability and positioning performance. This is linked with an advanced software control system which introduces both new and flexible in situ experimental functional testing modes, plus an automated vision control feedback system. This advancement in instrumentation design unlocks new possibilities of performing a range of new dynamical nanoscale materials tests, including novel friction and fatigue experiments inside the electron microscope.

This paper presents a study of kinematic and force singularities in parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms and their relationship to accessibility and controllability of such manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms, Parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms are classified according to their degrees of freedom, number of output Cartesian variables used to describe their motion and the number of actuated joint inputs. The singularities in the workspace are obtained by considering the force transformation matrix which maps the forces and torques in joint space to output forces and torques ill Cartesian space. The regions in the workspace which violate the small time local controllability (STLC) and small time local accessibility (STLA) condition are obtained by deriving the equations of motion in terms of Cartesian variables and by using techniques from Lie algebra. We show that for fully actuated manipulators when the number ofactuated joint inputs is equal to the number of output Cartesian variables, and the force transformation matrix loses rank, the parallel manipulator does not meet the STLC requirement. For the case where the number of joint inputs is less than the number of output Cartesian variables, if the constraint forces and torques (represented by the Lagrange multipliers) become infinite, the force transformation matrix loses rank. Finally, we show that the singular and non-STLC regions in the workspace of a parallel manipulator and closed-loop mechanism can be reduced by adding redundant joint actuators and links. The results are illustrated with the help of numerical examples where we plot the singular and non-STLC/non-STLA regions of parallel manipulators and closed-loop mechanisms belonging to the above mentioned classes. In order to explore idiotypic, anti-idiotypic, and anti-anti-idiotypic responses to allergens, BALB/c mice were immunized with affinity- purified human idiotypic antibodies directed against a highly purified shrimp allergen. This resulted in the production of anti-idiotypic antibodies which were quantitated by using rabbit idiotypic antibodies raised against the same purified allergen. The mouse anti-idiotypic antibodies recognized shrimp-specific human idiotypic antibodies of the IgE isotype from 18 of 20 individuals, and IgG antibodies from 14 of 20 shrimp-sensitive patients. Immunization of BALB/c mice with affinity- purified, allergen-specific anti-idiotypic antibodies induced anti- allergen IgE and IgG responses in the absence of the allergen. This paper thus presents evidence that anti-idiotypic antibodies raised against allergen-specific idiotypic antibodies may substitute for the original allergen in the induction of allergen-specific idiotypic antibodies. The demonstration of shared idiotopes on IgG and IgE antibodies in the sera of shrimp-sensitive patients supports the use of allergen-specific anti-idiotypic antibodies as surrogate allergens.

The operation of a stand-alone, as opposed to grid connected generation system, using a slip-ring induction machine as the electrical generator, is considered. In contrast to an alternator, a slip-ring induction machine can run at variable speed and still deliver constant frequency power to loads. This feature enables optimization of the system when the prime mover is inherently variable speed in nature eg. wind turbines, as well as diesel driven systems, where there is scope for economizing on fuel consumption. Experimental results from a system driven by a 44 bhp diesel engine are presented. Operation at subsynchronous as well as super-synchronous speeds is examined. The measurement facilitates the understanding of the system as well as its design.

The DSP is the natural choice as it is able to perform high speed calculations required in power electronics. The educational kit consists of a DSP platform using TI DSP TMS320C50 starter kit, an inverter and an induction machine-dc machine set.
