A novel method to fabricate chemically linked conducting polymer–biopolymer composites that are intrinsically flexible and conducting for functional electrode applications is presented. Polypyrrole was synthesised in situ during the cellulose regeneration process using the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid as a solvent medium. The obtained polypyrrole–cellulose composite was chemically blended and showed flexible polymer properties while retaining the electronic properties of a conducting polymer. Addition of an ionic liquid such as trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, enhanced the flexibility of the composite. The functional application of these materials in the electrochemically controlled release of a model drug has been demonstrated. This strategy opens up a new design for a wide spectrum of materials for smart electronic device applications wherein the functionality of doping and de-doping of conducting polymers is retained and their processability issue is addressed by exploiting an ionic liquid route.

Uusiutuvan energian käytön lisääntyminen lisää sähkön varastoinnin tarvetta. Litiumioniakku-jen on todettu olevan oivallisia keinoja varastoida sähköä esimerkiksi sähköautojen energian-lähteeksi. Tästä syystä akkujen kysyntä kasvaa nopeaa tahtia, jolloin nykyiset litiumlähteet ei-vät enää riitä tuottamaan tarpeeksi litiumia kasvavaan tarpeeseen. Tämän vuoksi litiumin tal-teenottoon tulee valjastaa uusia litiumin lähteitä, joiden hyödynnettävyys nykyisellä tekniikalla on pienen litiumkonsentraation ja muiden alkali- ja maa-alkalimetallien läsnäolon takia vaikeaa. Tällä hetkellä litiumia otetaan talteen eniten korkean litiumpitoisuuden luonnon suolajärvistä. Nykyisin käytössä oleva litiumin erotusprosessi on hidas ja sen käyttö pienten litiumkonsent-raatioiden suola-altailla on kannattamatonta. Tehokkaampana talteenottomenetelmänä luonnon suolajärvillä nähdään litiumin selektiivinen uutto ionisilla nesteillä. Menetelmä on todettu toi-mivaksi suolajärvillä, joilla on matala litiumkonsentraatio.

Tissue engineering is a real challenge for the treatment of cartilage pathologies. In this field, biomimetic hydrogels based on natural polymers are among the most commonly used matrices. A hydrogel made of silanized hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC-Si) is especially promising because it can be injected in cartilaginous lesions by minimally invasive surgery. However, the current synthesis of HPMC-Si is limited by the insolubility of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). This thesis work was focused on finding new synthesis conditions for the design of HPMC-Si hydrogel. In order to obtain a complete solubilization of HPMC and to improve its functionalization by the (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), the use of ionic liquids (IL), which are excellent solvents for polysaccharides, was undertaken. The beginning of this study was first devoted to the selection of an IL and then to the development of new reaction conditions. With these new conditions, higher silicon rates were obtained for HPMC modified in ionic liquid medium, however no hydrogel could be formed. The second part was therefore devoted to the synthesis of GPTMS 13C. Indeed, thanks to this radiolabeling, a structural characterization by 13C NMR of the HPMC-Si could be achieved. Finally, the reactivity in organic solvents of three organosilanes, including the GPTMS, was investigated toward nucleophiles representing the common functions found in natural polymers (e.g. -NH2, -OH, -SH). The results of this thesis have provided insights into the GPTMS reactivity in organic medium and thus paves the way to new conditions for the silanization of polysaccharides.

The purpose of my internship, carried out during my Erasmus period at the Complutense University of Madrid, was focused on the formulation of ionogels and hydrogels for the obtainment of films with high lignin content, and on their characterization measuring their antibacterial properties. For biomass formulation I used lignocellulosic biomass (Pinus Radiata) as raw material and ionic liquid as solvent. The two ionic liquids proposed were: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumdimethylphosphate [Emim][DMP] and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumdiethylphosphate [Emim][DEP]. The two-starting cellulose-rich solids were obtained from Pinus radiata wood that had been submitted to an organosolv process, to reduce its lignin content to fifteen (ORG15) and twenty per cent (ORG20). Having two ionic liquids and two solids available, the first phase of the project was devoted to the screening of both solids in both ionic liquids. Through this, it was possible to identify that only the [Emim][DMP] ionic liquid fulfils the purpose. It was also possible to discard the cellulose-rich solid ORG20 because its dissolution in the ionic liquid was not possible (after the time fixed) and, additionally, a Pinus radiata cellulose-rich solid bleached with hydrogen peroxide and containing ten per cent of lignin (ORG10B) was included in the screening. After screening, a total of five ionogels were subsequently formulated: two gels were formulated with the starting raw material ORG15 (with 1% and 1.75% cellulose, respectively) and three with ORG10B (with 1%, 1.75% and 3% cellulose, respectively). Five hydrogels were obtained from the ionogels. Rheological tests were performed on each ionogel and hydrogel. Finally, films were formulated from hydrogels and they were analysed by antibacterial testing to see if they could be applied as food packaging. In addition, antioxidant and properties such as opacity and transparency were also studied.

The analysis of Macdonald for electrolytes is generalized to the case in which two groups of ions are present. We assume that the electrolyte can be considered as a dispersion of ions in a dielectric liquid, and that the ionic recombination can be neglected. We present the differential equations governing the ionic redistribution when the liquid is subjected to an external electric field, describing the simultaneous diffusion of the two groups of ions in the presence of their own space charge fields. We investigate the influence of the ions on the impedance spectroscopy of an electrolytic cell. In the analysis, we assume that each group of ions have equal mobility, the electrodes perfectly block and that the adsorption phenomena can be neglected. In this framework, it is shown that the real part of the electrical impedance of the cell has a frequency dependence presenting two plateaux, related to a type of ambipolar and free diffusion coefficients. The importance of the considered problem on the ionic characterization performed by means of the impedance spectroscopy technique was discussed. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Pitzer`s equation for the excess Gibbs energy of aqueous solutions of low-molecular electrolytes is extended to aqueous solutions of polyelectrolytes. The model retains the original form of Pitzer`s model (combining a long-range term, based on the Debye-Huckel equation, with a short-range term similar to the virial equation where the second osmotic virial coefficient depends on the ionic strength). The extension consists of two parts: at first, it is assumed that a constant fraction of the monomer units of the polyelectrolyte is dissociated, i.e., that fraction does not depend on the concentration of the polyelectrolyte, and at second, a modified expression for the ionic strength (wherein each charged monomer group is taken into account individually) is introduced. This modification is to account for the presence of charged polyelectrolyte chains, which cannot be regarded as punctual charges. The resulting equation was used to correlate osmotic coefficient data of aqueous solutions of a single polyelectrolyte as well as of binary mixtures of a single polyelectrolyte and a salt with low-molecular weight. It was additionally applied to correlate liquid-liquid equilibrium data of some aqueous two-phase systems that might form when a polyelectrolyte and another hydrophilic but neutral polymer are simultaneously dissolved in water. A good agreement between the experimental data and the correlation result is observed for all investigated systems. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background, aim, and scope The retention of potentially toxic metals in highly weathered soils can follow different pathways that variably affect their mobility and availability in the soil-water-plant system. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pH, nature of electrolyte, and ionic strength of the solution on nickel (Ni) adsorption by two acric Oxisols and a less weathered Alfisol. Materials and methods The effect of pH on Ni adsorption was evaluated in surface and subsurface samples from a clayey textured Anionic `Rhodic` Acrudox ( RA), a sandy-clayey textured Anionic `Xantic` Acrudox (XA), and a heavy clayey textured Rhodic Kandiudalf (RK). All soil samples were equilibrated with the same concentration of Ni solution (5.0 mg L(-1)) and two electrolyte solutions (CaCl(2) or NaCl) with different ionic strengths (IS) (1.0, 0.1 and 0.01 mol L(-1)). The pH of each sample set varied from 3 to 10 in order to obtain sorption envelopes. Results and discussion Ni adsorption increased as the pH increased, reaching its maximum of nearly pH 6. The adsorption was highest in Alfisol, followed by RA and XA. Competition between Ni(2+) and Ca(2+) was higher than that between Ni(2+) and Na(+) in all soil samples, as shown by the higher percentage of Ni adsorption at pH 5. At pH values below the intersection point of the three ionic strength curves (zero point of salt effect), Ni adsorption was generally higher in the more concentrated solution (highest IS), probably due to the neutralization of positive charges of soil colloids by Cl(-) ions and consequent adsorption of Ni(2+). Above this point, Ni adsorption was higher in the more diluted solution (lowest ionic strength), due to the higher negative potential at the colloid surfaces and the lower ionic competition for exchange sites in soil colloids. Conclusions The effect of ionic strength was lower in the Oxisols than in the Alfisol. The main mechanism that controlled Ni adsorption in the soils was the ionic exchange, since the adsorption of ionic species varied according to the variation of pH values. The ionic competition revealed the importance of electrolyte composition and ionic strength on Ni adsorption in soils from the humid tropics. Recommendations and perspectives The presence of NaCl or CaCl(2) in different ionic strengths affects the availability of heavy metals in contaminated soils. Therefore, the study of heavy metal dynamics in highly weathered soils must consider this behavior, especially in soils with large amounts of acric components.

Low-temperature anneals (1200 degreesC for 40 h) of 8 mol% yttria-stabilised zirconia, prior to the samples being sintered at 1500 degreesC, had the effect of improving the ionic conductivity of the specimens. The presence Of SiO2 in the specimens was shown to be detrimental, however. Irrespective of the SiO2 content, this type of heat treatment also leads to improvements in conductivity. Extensive microstructural analysis provided indication of the mechanism of this phenomenon. This included selective formation of zircon, relief of sintering strain leading to the formation of coherent grain boundaries and segregation effects. We present the implementation of dynamic electrostatic force microscopy in liquid media. This implementation enables the quantitative imaging of local dielectric properties of materials in electrolyte solutions with nanoscale spatial resolution. Local imaging capabilities are obtained by probing the frequency-dependent and ionic concentration-dependent electrostatic forces at high frequency (>1 MHz), while quantification of the interaction forces is obtained with finite-element numerical calculations. The results presented open a wide range of possibilities in a number of fields where the dielectric properties of materials need to be probed at the nanoscale and in a liquid environment.

The aim of this study was to develop a fast capillary electrophoresis method for the determination of benzoate and sorbate ions in commercial beverages. In the method development the pH and constituents of the background electrolyte were selected using the effective mobility versus pH curves. As the high resolution obtained experimentally for sorbate and benzoate in the studies presented in the literature is not in agreement with that expected from the ionic mobility values published, a procedure to determine these values was carried out. The salicylate ion was used as the internal standard. The background electrolyte was composed of 25 mmol L(-1) tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and 12.5 mmol L(-1) 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid, atpH 8.1.Separation was conducted in a fused-silica capillary(32 cm total length and 8.5 cm effective length, 50 mu m I.D.), with short-end injection configuration and direct UV detection at 200 nm for benzoate and salicylate and 254 nm for sorbate ions. The run time was only 28 s. A few figures of merit of the proposed method include: good linearity (R(2) > 0.999), limit of detection of 0.9 and 0.3 mg L(-1) for benzoate and sorbate, respectively, inter-day precision better than 2.7% (n =9) and recovery in the range 97.9-105%. Beverage samples were prepared by simple dilution with deionized water (1:11, v/v). Concentrations in the range of 197-401 mg L(-1) for benzoate and 28-144 mg L(-1) for sorbate were found in soft drinks and tea. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
