The modern Atlantic Ocean, dominated by the interactions of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), plays a key role in redistributing heat from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere. In order to reconstruct the evolution of the relative importance of these two water masses, the NADW/AABW transition, reflected by the calcite lysocline, was investigated by the Globigerina bulloides dissolution index (BDX?). The depth level of the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM) calcite lysocline was elevated by several hundred metres, indicating a more corrosive water mass present at modern NADW level. Overall, the small range of BDX? data and the gradual decrease in preservation below the calcite lysocline point to a less stratified Atlantic Ocean during the LGM. Similar preservation patterns in the West and East Atlantic demonstrate that the modern west-east asymmetry did not exist due to an expansion of southern deep waters compensating for the decrease in NADW formation.

A number of essential elements closely related to each other are involved in the Earth's climatic system. The temporal and spatial distribution of insolation determines wind patterns and the ocean's thermohaline pump. In turn, these last two are directly linked to the extension and retreat of marine and continental ice and to the chemistry of the atmosphere and the ocean. The variability of these elements may trigger, amplify, sustain or globalize rapid climatic changes. Paleoclimatic oscillations have been identified in this thesis by using fossil organic compounds synthesized by marine and terrestrial flora. High sedimentation rate deposits at the Barents and the Iberian peninsula continental margins were chosen in order to estimate the climatic changes on centennial time resolution. At the Barents margin, the sediment recovered was up to 15,000 years old (unit ''a'', from latin ''annos'') (M23258; west of the Bjørnøya island). At the Iberian margin, the sediment cores studied covered a wide range of time spans: up to 115,000 a (MD99-2343; north of the Minorca island), up to 250,000 a (ODP-977A; Alboran basin) and up to 420,000 a (MD01-2442, MD01-2443, MD01-2444, MD01-2445; close to the Tagus abyssal plain). At the northern site, inputs containing marine, continental and ancient reworked organic matter provided a detailed reconstruction of climate history at the time of the final retreat of the Barents ice sheet. At the western Barents continental slope, warm climatic conditions were observed during the early Holocene (~from 8,650 a to 5,240 a ago); in contrast, an apparent long-term cooling trend occurred in the late Holocene (~from 5,240 a to 760 a ago), in consistence with other paleoarchives from northern and southern European latitudes. The Iberian margin sites, which were never covered with large ice sheets, preserved exceptionally complete sequences of rapid events during ice ages hitherto not studied in such great detail: during the last glacial (~from 70,900 a to 11,800 a ago), the second glacial (~from 189,300 a to 127,500 a ago), the third ice age (~from 278,600 a to 244,800 a ago) and the fourth (~from 376,300 a to 337,500 a ago). In this thesis, crucial research questions were brought up concerning the severity of different glacial periods, the intensity and rates of the recorded oscillations and the long distance connections related to rapid climate change. The data obtained provide a sound basis to further research on the mechanisms involved in this rapid climate variability. An essential point of the research was the evidence that, over the past 420,000 a, at the whole Iberian margin, warm and stable long periods similar to the Holocene always ended abruptly in few centuries after a gradual deterioration of climate conditions. The detailed estimate of past climate variability provides clues to the natural end of the present warm period. Returning to an ice age in European lands would be exacerbated by a number of factors: a lack of differential solar heating between northern and southern north Atlantic latitudes, enhanced evaporation at low latitudes, and an increase in snowfall or iceberg discharges at northern regions. It must be emphasized that all climatic oscillations observed in this thesis were caused by forces of nature, i.e. the last two centuries were not taken into consideration.

In this article, it is proposed a brief revision of the number of Techialoyan codices. To do this, the text starts with a definition of the corpus, that it is composed of manuscripts done between the half of the 17th century and beginning of the next. Around these documents there are many doubts and it remains much to do. In this case, we present a review around the lists and catalogues to see the changes of the group through time. Our conclusion is that is necessary recount the corpus, because there are fragmented documents and others are unknowns or copies. Finally, we show our count, that leaves the number less than fifty-six documents catalogued until today.

Microplankton plays a vital part in marine ecosystems and its importance has been recognised by the inclusion of microplankton community composition in regulatory frameworks such as the European Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive as an indicator of ecological status. Quantitative techniques are therefore required to assess the environmental status of the microplankton in a water body. Here we demonstrate the use of a method known as the Microplankton Index PI(mp) to evaluate changes in the microplankton community of the West coast Scottish Sea Loch Creran. Microplankton in this fjord has been studied since the 1970’s providing a data set spanning four decades. Our analysis compares an arbitrarily chosen reference period between 1979 and 1981 with a period between 2011 and 2013 and demonstrates that between these two periods community structure has changed considerably with a substantial drop in the numbers of observed diatoms accompanied by a rise in the number of autotrophic/mixotrophic dinoflagellates as well as an increase in the potentially toxin producing genus Pseudo-nitzschia and that these are related to changes in both the intensity and timing of local patterns of precipitation. The PI(mp) is shown to be a useful and robust method to visualise and quantify changes in the underlying structure of the microplankton community and is a powerful addition to the toolbox of techniques needed to determine the health of our seas.

Mycobacterium bovis populations in countries with persistent bovine tuberculosis usually show a prevalent spoligotype with a wide geographical distribution. This study applied mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing to a random panel of 115 M. bovis isolates that are representative of the most frequent spoligotype in the Iberian Peninsula, SB0121. VNTR typing targeted nine loci: ETR-A (alias VNTR2165), ETR-B (VNTR2461), ETR-D (MIRU4, VNTR580), ETR-E (MIRU31, VNTR3192), MIRU26 (VNTR2996), QUB11a (VNTR2163a), QUB11b (VNTR2163b), QUB26 (VNTR4052), and QUB3232 (VNTR3232). We found a high degree of diversity among the studied isolates (discriminatory index [D] = 0.9856), which were split into 65 different MIRU-VNTR types. An alternative short-format MIRU-VNTR typing targeting only the four loci with the highest variability values was found to offer an equivalent discriminatory index. Minimum spanning trees using the MIRU-VNTR data showed the hypothetical evolution of an apparent clonal group. MIRU-VNTR analysis was also applied to the isolates of 176 animals from 15 farms infected by M. bovis SB0121; in 10 farms, the analysis revealed the coexistence of two to five different MIRU types differing in one to six loci, which highlights the frequency of undetected heterogeneity.

The assessment of water quality has changed markedly worldwide over the last years, especially in Europe due to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Fish was considered a key-element in this context and several fish-based multi-metric indices have been proposed. In this study, we propose a multi-metric index, the Estuarine Fish Assessment Index (EFAI), developed for Portuguese estuaries, designed for the overall assessment of transitional waters, which could also be applied at the water body level within an estuary. The EFAI integrates seven metrics: species richness, percentage of marine migrants, number of species and abundance of estuarine resident species, number of species and abundance of piscivorous species, status of diadromous species, status of introduced species and status of disturbance sensitive species. Fish sampling surveys were conducted in 2006, 2009 and 2010, using beam trawl, in 13 estuarine systems along the Portuguese coast. Most of the metrics presented a high variability among the transitional systems surveyed. According to the EFAI values, Portuguese estuaries presented a "Good" water quality status (except the Douro in a particular year). The assessments in different years were generally concordant, with a few exceptions. The relationship between the EFAI and the Anthropogenic Pressure Index (API) was not significant, but a negative and significant correlation was registered between the EFAI and the expert judgement pressure index, at both estuary and water body level. The ordination analysis performed to evaluate similarities among North-East Atlantic Geographical Intercalibration Group (NEAGIG) fish-based indices put in evidence four main groups: the French index, since it is substantially different from all the other indices (uses only four metrics based on densities); indices from Ireland, United Kingdom and Spain (Asturias and Cantabria); the Dutch and German indices; and the indices of Belgium. Portugal and Spain (Basque country). The need for detailed studies, including comparative approaches, on several aspects of these assessment tools, especially in what regards their response to anthropogenic pressures was stressed. A Flood Vulnerability Index (FloodVI) was developed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a new aggregation method based on Cluster Analysis (CA). PCA simplifies a large number of variables into a few uncorrelated factors representing the social, economic, physical and environmental dimensions of vulnerability. CA groups areas that have the same characteristics in terms of vulnerability into vulnerability classes. The grouping of the areas determines their classification contrary to other aggregation methods in which the areas' classification determines their grouping. While other aggregation methods distribute the areas into classes, in an artificial manner, by imposing a certain probability for an area to belong to a certain class, as determined by the assumption that the aggregation measure used is normally distributed, CA does not constrain the distribution of the areas by the classes. FloodVI was designed at the neighbourhood level and was applied to the Portuguese municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia where several flood events have taken place in the recent past. The FloodVI sensitivity was assessed using three different aggregation methods: the sum of component scores, the first component score and the weighted sum of component scores. The results highlight the sensitivity of the FloodVI to different aggregation methods. Both sum of component scores and weighted sum of component scores have shown similar results. The first component score aggregation method classifies almost all areas as having medium vulnerability and finally the results obtained using the CA show a distinct differentiation of the vulnerability where hot spots can be clearly identified. The information provided by records of previous flood events corroborate the results obtained with CA, because the inundated areas with greater damages are those that are identified as high and very high vulnerability areas by CA. This supports the fact that CA provides a reliable FloodVI.

Different selection objectives within the Quarter Horse breed led to the formation of groups with distinct skills, including the racing and cutting lines. With a smaller population size in Brazil, but of great economic representativeness, the racing line is characterized by animals that can reach high speeds over short distances and within a short period of time. The cutting line is destined for functional tests, exploring skills such as agility and obedience. Although the athletic performance of horses is likely to be influenced by a large number of genes, few genetic variants have so far been related to this trait and this was done exclusively in Thoroughbreds, including the g.38973231G>A singlenucleotide polymorphism in the PDK4 gene and the g.22684390C>T single-nucleotide polymorphism in the COX4I2 gene. The results of the present study demonstrate the presence of polymorphic PDK4 and COX4I2 genes in Quarter Horses. The analysis of 296 racing animals and 68 cutting animals revealed significant differences in allele and genotype frequencies between the two lines. The same was not observed when these frequencies were compared between extreme racing performance phenotypes. There were also no significant associations between alleles of the two polymorphisms and the speed index. These results suggest that the alleles of the PDK4 and COX4I2 genes, which are related to better racecourse performance in Thoroughbreds, are probably associated with beneficial adaptations in aerobic metabolism and therefore play secondary roles in sprint racing performance in Quarter Horses, which is mainly anaerobic.

Two dimensional flow of a micropolar fluid in a porous channel is investigated. The flow is driven by suction or injection at the channel walls, and the micropolar model due to Eringen is used to describe the working fluid. An extension of Berman's similarity transform is used to reduce the governing equations to a set of non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations. The latter are solved for large mass transfer via a perturbation analysis where the inverse of the cross-flow Reynolds number is used as the perturbing parameter. Complementary numerical solutions for strong injection are also obtained using a quasilinearisation scheme, and good agreement is observed between the solutions obtained from the perturbation analysis and the computations.
