Amyloid fibrils are formed by a model surfactant-like peptide (Ala)10-(His)6 containing a hexahistidine tag. This peptide undergoes a remarkable two-step self-assembly process with two distinct critical aggregation concentrations (cac’s), probed by fluorescence techniques. A micromolar range cac is ascribed to the formation of prefibrillar structures, whereas a millimolar range cac is associated with the formation of well-defined but more compact fibrils. We examine the labeling of these model tagged amyloid fibrils using Ni-NTA functionalized gold nanoparticles (Nanogold). Successful labeling is demonstrated via electron microscopy imaging. The specificity of tagging does not disrupt the β-sheet structure of the peptide fibrils. Binding of fibrils and Nanogold is found to influence the circular dichroism associated with the gold nanoparticle plasmon absorption band. These results highlight a new approach to the fabrication of functionalized amyloid fibrils and the creation of peptide/nanoparticle hybrid materials.

The assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into nanostructured films is attractive for producing functionalized hybrid materials and (bio-)chemical sensors, but this requires experimental methods that allow for control of molecular architecturcs. In this study, we exploit the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique to obtain two types of sensors incorporating CNTs. In the first, LbL films of alternating layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) dispersed in polyarninoamide (PAMAM) dendrimers and nickel phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) were used in amperometric detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA). The electrochemical properties evaluated with cyclic voltammetry indicated that the incorporation of MWNTs in the PAMAM-NT/NiTsPc LbL films led to a 3-fold increase in the peak current, in addition to a decrease of 50 mV in the oxidation potential of DA. The latter allowed detection of DA even in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), a typical interferent for DA. Another LbL film was obtained with layers of PAMAM and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) employed in field-effect-devices using a capacitive electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor structure (EIS). The adsorption of the film components was monitored by measuring the flat-band voltage shift in capacitance-voltage (C-P) curves, caused by the charges from the components. Constant capacitance (ConCap) measurements showed that the EISPAMAM/SWNT film displayed a high pH sensitivity (ca. 54.5 mV/pH), being capable of detecting penicillin G between 10(-4) mol L(-1) and 10(-2) mol L-1, when a layer of penicillinase was adsorbed atop the PAMAM/SWNT film. A conductive and electrochemically active composite material has been prepared by the combination of bentonite and nickel hydroxide precursor sol. This material exhibits the characteristic intercalation properties of the clay component and the electrochemical and optical properties of nickel hydroxide. The clay particles seem to induce the aggregation of nickel hydroxide, leading to the formation of a layer of alpha-Ni(OH)(2) exhibiting needle like morphology. The composite forms stable films and has been conveniently used for the preparation of modified electrodes exhibiting intercalation and electrochemical properties, thus providing an interesting material for the development of amperometric sensors. Two hybrid materials based on dodecatungstophosphoric acid (HPW) dispersed in ormosils modified with 3-aminopropiltrietoxysilane (APTS) or with N-(3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyl)-ethylene-diamine (TSPEN) show reversible photochromic response induced by irradiation in the 200-390 nm UV range. A set of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques was used to analyze the structural properties of the main components of these hybrids (the HPW polyanion, the inorganic matrix, and the organic functionalities). For the ormosils, the use of (29)Si NMR, {(1)H}-(29)Si cross-polarization, and {(1)H}-(29)Si HETCOR revealed a homogeneous distribution of silicon species Q ``, T(2), and T(3) for the APTS hybrid, contrasting with the separation of T(3) species in the TSPEN hybrid. The combination of (31)P NMR, {(1)H}-(31)P cross-polarization and (31)P-{(1)H} spin-echo double resonance (SEDOR) revealed the dispersion of the HPW ions in the ormosil, occupying sites with a high number of close protons (>50). Differences in the molecular dynamics at room temperature, inferred from SEDOR experiments, indicate a state of restricted mobility of the HPW ion and the surrounding molecular groups in the TSPEN hybrid. This behavior is consistent with the presence of more amino groups in the TSPEN, acting as chelating groups to the HPW ion. This hybrid, with the strong chelate interaction of the diamine group, shows the most intense photochromic response, in agreement with the charge transfer models proposed to explain the photochromic effect. Electronic reflectance spectroscopy in irradiated samples revealed the presence of one-electron and two-electron reduced polyanions. The one-electron reduced species could be detected also by (31)P NMR spectroscopy immediately after UV irradiation.

This study describes the synthesis of novel biological hybrid materials, where 3D structures were obtained using gold nanoparticles (AuNps) and methionine (Met) in a one-step procedure in aqueous media. The type of nanostructure can be controlled by tuning the intermolecular interactions between Met and AuNp, which strongly depends on the pH used for the synthesis. Computational simulation using the density-functional theory (DFT) showed that the AuNp - Met 3D structures are formed upon reorientation of Met molecules so that the backbone amine groups interact via H-bonds. These findings were experimentally confirmed using FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Crown Copyright (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on the assembly between inorganic 2D host structure and polymer have received considerable attention in the last few years. This emerging class of materials presents several applications according to their structural and functional properties. Particularly, among others, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) provide the opportunity of preparing new organically modified 2D nanocomposites. Pyrrole carboxylic acid derivatives, namely 4-(lH-pyrrol-1-yl)benzoate, 3-(pyrrol-i-yl)-propanoate,7-(pyrrol-1-yl)-heptanoate, and aniline carboxylic acid derivative, namely 3-aminobenzoic acid, have been intercalated in LDHs of intralamellar composition Zn2Al(OH)(6). The LDHs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method at constant pH followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction patterns (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron spin resonance (ESR). The basal spacing found by the PXRD technique gives evidence of the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. ESR spectra present a typical signal with a superhyperfine structure with 6 + 1 lines (g = 2.005 +/- 0.0004), which is assigned to the interaction between a carboxylate radical from the guest molecules and a nearby aluminium nucleus (I = 5/2) from the host structure. Additionally, the ESR data suggest that the monomers are connected to each other in limited number after thermal treatment. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A catalyst of great interest to the scientific community tries to unite the structure of ordered pore diameter from mesoporous materials with the properties of stability and acid activity to microporous zeolites. Thus a large number of materials was developed in the past decades, which although being reported as zeolites intrinsically they fail to comply with some relevant characteristics to zeolites, and recently were named zeolitic materials of high accessibility. Among the various synthesis strategies employed, the present research approaches the synthesis methods of crystallization of silanized protozeolitic units and the method of protozeolitic units molded around surfactant micelles, in order for get materials defined as hierarchical zeolites and micro-mesoporous hybrid materials, respectively. As goal BEA/MCM-41 hybrid catalysts with bimodal pore structure formed by nuclei of zeolite Beta and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium were developed. As also was successfully synthesized the hierarchical Beta zeolite having a secondary porosity, in addition to the typical and uniform zeolite micropores. Both catalysts were applied in reactions of catalytic cracking of high density polyethylene (HDPE), to evaluate its properties in catalytic activity, aiming at the recycling of waste plastics to obtain high value-added raw materials and fuels. The BEA/MCM-41 hybrid materials with 0 days of pre-crystallization did not show enough properties for use in catalytic cracking reactions, but they showed superior catalytic properties compared to those ordered mesoporous materials of Al-MCM-41 type. The structure of Beta zeolite with hierarchical porosity leads the accessibility of HDPE bulky molecules to active centers, due to high external area. And provides higher conversion to hydrocarbons in the gasoline range, especially olefins which have great interest in the petrochemical industry

This is a study of the structural transformations occurring in hybrid siloxane-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) nanocomposites, with different PPG molecular weight, along the drying process. The starting materials are wet gels obtained by the sol-gel procedure using as precursor the 3-(trietoxysilyl)propylisocyanate (IsoTrEOS) and polypropylenglycol bis(2-amino-propyl-ether) (NH2-PPG-NH2). The shrinkage and mass loss measurements were performed using a temperature-controlled chamber at 50 degreesC. The nanostructural evolution of samples during drying was studied in situ by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The experimental results demonstrate that the drying process is highly dependent on the molecular weight of polymer. After the initial drying stage, the progressive emptying of pores leads to the formation of a irregular drying front in gels prepared from PPG of high molecular weight, like 4000 g/mol. As a consequence, an increase of the SAXS intensity due to the increase of electronic density contrast between siloxane clusters and polymeric matrix is observed. For hybrids containing PPG of low molecular weight, the pore emptying process is fast, leading to a regular drying front, without isolated nanopockets of solvents. SAXS intensity curves exhibit a maximum, which was associated to the existence of spatial correlation of the silica clusters embedded in the polymeric matrix. The spatial correlation is preserved during drying. These results also reveal that the structural transformation during drying is governed by capillary forces and depends on the entanglement of polymer chains.

Hybrid transparent and flexible siloxane-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) materials with covalent bonds between the inorganic (siloxane) and organic (polymeric) phases were prepared by sol-gel process. In order to improve the quality of the mechanical properties of these materials, different amounts of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) were added to the initial sol. The effect of MTES addition on the structure of the composites was studied by Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Si-29 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Si-29 NMR). In absence of MTES, SAXS spectra exhibit a peak that is assigned to spatial correlation due to short range order between the siloxane clusters embedded in the polymeric phase. The experimental results indicate that, for low MTES concentrations ([MTES]/[O] less than or equal to 0.8, O: ether-type oxygen of PPG), the silicon species resulting from hydrolysis and condensation of MTES fill the open spaces between polymeric chains, interacting with the ether-type oxygens. For larger MTES content ([MTES]/[O] greater than or equal to 0.8), the number of free ether-type oxygen sites avalaible for reaction with such silicon species is not large enough. Consequently, a fraction of silicon species resulting from MTES addition graft to siloxane clusters formed by hydrolysis and condensation of the hybrid precursor. For all MTES concentrations the condensation degree of the siloxane phase, determined from Si-29 NMR spectroscopy, is high (> 69%), as expected under neutral pH synthesis conditions.

We report the synthesis and characterization of organic-inorganic hybrid materials: Zn-2-Al-LDHs (layered double hydroxides) containing 3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-propanoate and 7-(1H-pyrrol-l-yl)-heptanoate as the interlayer anions. The LDHs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method at constant pH followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were characterized by PXRD, C-13 CP-MAS NMR, TGA, and ESR. The basal spacing found by PXRD technique is coincident with the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. The solid state C-13 NMR showed that the interlayered anions remain identical after intercalation. ESR data suggest that the monomers connect each other in a limited number of guests when a thermal treatment is applied. The inorganic LDH sheets delay the temperature of degradation of the monomers. C-13 exchange solid-state NMR methods were used to study two families of siloxane/poly-(ethylene glycol) hybrid materials: Types I and II, where the polymer chains interact with the inorganic phase through physical (hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces) or chemical (covalent bonds) interactions, respectively. These methods were employed to analyze the effects of the interactions between the organic and inorganic phases on the polymer dynamics in the milliseconds to seconds time scale, which occurs at temperatures below the motional narrowing of the NMR line width and around the polymer glass transition. Motional heterogeneities associated with these interactions and evidence of both small and large amplitude motions were directly observed for both types of hybrids. The results revealed that the hindrance to the slow molecular motions of the polymer chains due to the siloxane structures depends on the chain length and the nature of the interaction between the organic and inorganic phases.

Siloxane-polyoxypropylene (PPO) hybrids obtained by the sol-gel process and containing short polymer chain have been doped with different sodium salts NaX (X = ClO4, BF4 or I). The effect of the counter-ion (X) on the chemical environment of the sodium ions and on the ionic conductivity of these hybrids was investigated by Na-23 NMR, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), complex impedance, Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results reveal that the different sodium salts have essentially the same effect on the nanoscopic structure of the hybrids. The formation of immobile Na+ cations involved in NaCl-like species could be minimized by using a low amount of HCl as hydrolytic catalyst. The differences in the ionic conductivity of hybrids doped with different sodium salts were correlated with the proportion of Na ions solvated by ether-type oxygen of the polymeric chains and by the carboxyl oxygen located in the urea groups of the PPO chain extremities.
