Can Compensation Committees Effectively Mitigate the CEO Horizon Problem? The Role of Co-opted Directors

Extant research finds inconclusive evidence about the CEO horizon problem. One possibility is that compensation committees design CEO compensation in a way that discourages retiring CEOs from opportunistic earnings management and R&D reduction. However, compensation committees dominated by co-opted directors may not be as effective as those with fewer co-opted directors in mitigating the CEO horizon problem, because directors co-opted by the CEO tend to bias their decisions in favor of the CEO. I find that compensation committees dominated by co-opted directors are associated with higher CEO compensation packages. I document R&D reduction and accruals management in firms with retiring CEOs and compensation committees dominated by co-opted directors, and find that R&D reduction and income-increasing accruals are less discouraged by compensation committees dominated by co-opted directors when deciding CEO compensation. I also examine the effect of boards of directors and compensation committee characteristics on CEO compensation and on mitigating the CEO horizon problem. I find that CEO compensation positively associates with CEO power, director independence, and the percentage of busy directors, and negatively associates with board of directors and committee size and director ownership. Moreover, I find that retiring CEOs are more likely to reduce R&D expenditures when CEOs have more power, and director tenure is longer; retiring CEOs in firms with large boards of directors and compensation committees are less likely to manage accruals.

Mémoire de Licence, université de Dalécarlie Les rapports hommes-femmes dans Les Liaisons dangereuses de Choderlos de Laclos

Ce mémoire a pour but de faire une analyse du roman de Choderlos de Laclos Les Liaisons dangereuses et de répondre à quatre questions primordiales, à savoir : -Quelle représentation de l’homme et de la femme apparaît dans le roman de Choderlos de Laclos et quelle est la nature des relations entre les personnages des deux sexes ? - S’agit-il d’une condamnation ou d’une illustration du libertinage ? -Quels ont été les effets moraux de ce livre sur la société du XVIIIème siècle ? -Quelle était l’attitude de l’auteur par rapport aux femmes ? Afin de répondre à ces quatre questions primordiales, nous avons décidé de faire une analyse du roman, mais aussi de nous intéresser à la sociologie de la littérature et plus exactement sur l’horizon d’attente et la réception de l’oeuvre. Nous avons aussi utilisé la correspondance écrite entre Choderlos de Laclos et Mme Riccoboni afin d’établir l’attitude de l’auteur par rapport aux femmes. Pour conclure, nous démontrerons que l’auteur était en avance sur son temps et n’était aucunement misogyne et oeuvrait pour l’amélioration de éducation des femmes.

Impacts of Deepwater Horizon oil and associated dispersant on early development of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil platform resulted in large amounts of crude oil and dispersant Corexit 9500A® released into the Gulf of Mexico and coincided with the spawning season of the oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The effects of exposing gametes and embryos of C. virginica to dispersant alone (Corexit), mechanically (HEWAF) and chemically dispersed (CEWAF) DWH oil were evaluated. Fertilization success and the morphological development, growth, and survival of larvae were assessed. Gamete exposure reduced fertilization (HEWAF: EC201 h = 1650 μg tPAH50 L− 1; CEWAF: EC201 h = 19.4 μg tPAH50 L− 1; Corexit: EC201 h = 6.9 mg L− 1). CEWAF and Corexit showed a similar toxicity on early life stages at equivalent nominal concentrations. Oysters exposed from gametes to CEWAF and Corexit experienced more deleterious effects than oysters exposed from embryos. Results suggest the presence of oil and dispersant during oyster spawning season may interfere with larval development and subsequent recruitment.

Le Collège coopératif Horizon : La Formule coopérative à la rescousse d'une école de village

En mars 1990, la commission scolaire de Victoriaville décida de fermer l'école secondaire Notre-Dame du Perpétuel-Secours. Cette institution scolaire était située à Ham-Nord, un tout petit village d'un millier d'habitants de la région des Bois-Francs. Cette décision fut évidemment accueillie par de fougueuses protestations de la part de ces villageois qui formèrent rapidement un comité de maintien chargé de faire reculer la commission scolaire. Le comité était composé de gens venant de tous les milieux sociaux de Ham-Nord (industriel, scolaire, religieux...) et il répondit donc aux arguments économiques par des questionnements d'ordre humain. D'abord, ils insistèrent sur le fait que le transfert des élèves de Ham-Nord leur provoquerait un transport quotidien d'une heure et demie. Ensuite, ils soutinrent que la disparition de l'école porterait un dur coup à toute la vitalité socio-économique du village. Malheureusement, les efforts du comité n'ont pas porté fruit. En effet, lors du vote final, le résultat a clairement démontré que la position des commissaires demeurait inflexible. En vérité, ces derniers ont voté à 16 contre 1 en faveur de la fermeture de l'école Notre-Dame du Perpétuel-Secours. Toutefois, la population n'était pas prête à s'avouer vaincue et le comité manoeuvrait désormais pour impliquer le gouvernement dans le dossier. Par conséquent, des manifestations furent organisées à cet égard mais après quelques mois le comité de maintien a reçu une douche d'eau froide puisque le ministère de l'éducation s'est prononcé en faveur de la fermeture…

Natural Disaster and Intangible Heritage: Beyond the Horizon

When 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, many monuments, temples and houses turned into rubbles killing more than 8,000 people and injuring above 21,000. This unfortunate and tragic natural disaster brought international attention to Nepal. But in this time of despair and pain there was a sign of hope that should be acknowledged well, the spirit of community facing the disaster. This paper is about the indigenous community of Kathmandu on how they organized an important traditional festival just four months after the disaster when most the people were still living in the makeshifts, along with the smaller aftershock continuing almost everyday. In the country like Nepal with numerous intangible heritages, which is, still living is not taken seriously by the concerned authorities and mostly been neglected. It is the indigenous community who has been carrying out those heritages, as they are inseparable aspect of the social life. With this paper it tries look at the community involvement and intangible heritage of Kathmandu Valley, which is a part of my PhD research thesis.

Visual Navigation In The Neotropical Ant Odontomachus Hastatus (formicidae, Ponerinae), A Predominantly Nocturnal, Canopy-dwelling Predator Of The Atlantic Rainforest.

The arboreal ant Odontomachus hastatus nests among roots of epiphytic bromeliads in the sandy forest at Cardoso Island (Brazil). Crepuscular and nocturnal foragers travel up to 8m to search for arthropod prey in the canopy, where silhouettes of leaves and branches potentially provide directional information. We investigated the relevance of visual cues (canopy, horizon patterns) during navigation in O. hastatus. Laboratory experiments using a captive ant colony and a round foraging arena revealed that an artificial canopy pattern above the ants and horizon visual marks are effective orientation cues for homing O. hastatus. On the other hand, foragers that were only given a tridimensional landmark (cylinder) or chemical marks were unable to home correctly. Navigation by visual cues in O. hastatus is in accordance with other diurnal arboreal ants. Nocturnal luminosity (moon, stars) is apparently sufficient to produce contrasting silhouettes from the canopy and surrounding vegetation, thus providing orientation cues. Contrary to the plain floor of the round arena, chemical cues may be important for marking bifurcated arboreal routes. This experimental demonstration of the use of visual cues by a predominantly nocturnal arboreal ant provides important information for comparative studies on the evolution of spatial orientation behavior in ants. Quasinormal modes of black holes in anti-de Sitter space: A numerical study of the eikonal limit

Using series solutions and time-domain evolutions, we probe the eikonal limit of the gravitational and scalar-field quasinormal modes of large black holes and black branes in anti-de Sitter backgrounds. These results are particularly relevant for the AdS/CFT correspondence, since the eikonal regime is characterized by the existence of long-lived modes which (presumably) dominate the decay time scale of the perturbations. We confirm all the main qualitative features of these slowly damped modes as predicted by Festuccia and Liu [G. Festuccia and H. Liu, arXiv:0811.1033.] for the scalar-field (tensor-type gravitational) fluctuations. However, quantitatively we find dimensional-dependent correction factors. We also investigate the dependence of the quasinormal mode frequencies on the horizon radius of the black hole (brane) and the angular momentum (wave number) of vector- and scalar-type gravitational perturbations.
