This article demonstrates the use of embedded fibre Bragg gratings as vector bending sensor to monitor two-dimensional shape deformation of a shape memory polymer plate. The shape memory polymer plate was made by using thermal-responsive epoxy-based shape memory polymer materials, and the two fibre Bragg grating sensors were orthogonally embedded, one on the top and the other on the bottom layer of the plate, in order to measure the strain distribution in both longitudinal and transverse directions separately and also with temperature reference. When the shape memory polymer plate was bent at different angles, the Bragg wavelengths of the embedded fibre Bragg gratings showed a red-shift of 50 pm/caused by the bent-induced tensile strain on the plate surface. The finite element method was used to analyse the stress distribution for the whole shape recovery process. The strain transfer rate between the shape memory polymer and optical fibre was also calculated from the finite element method and determined by experimental results, which was around 0.25. During the experiment, the embedded fibre Bragg gratings showed very high temperature sensitivity due to the high thermal expansion coefficient of the shape memory polymer, which was around 108.24 pm/C below the glass transition temperature (Tg) and 47.29 pm/C above Tg. Therefore, the orthogonal arrangement of the two fibre Bragg grating sensors could provide a temperature compensation function, as one of the fibre Bragg gratings only measures the temperature while the other is subjected to the directional deformation. Shape memory alloys are a special class of metals that can undergo large deformation yet still be able to recover their original shape through the mechanism of phase transformations. However, when they experience plastic slip, their ability to recover their original shape is reduced. This is due to the presence of dislocations generated by plastic flow that interfere with shape recovery through the shape memory effect and the superelastic effect. A one-dimensional model that captures the coupling between shape memory effect, the superelastic effect and plastic deformation is introduced. The shape memory alloy is assumed to have only 3 phases: austenite, positive variant martensite and negative variant martensite. If the SMA flows plastically, each phase will exhibit a dislocation field that permanently prevents a portion of it from being transformed back to other phases. Hence, less of the phase is available for subsequent phase transformations. A constitutive model was developed to depict this phenomena and simulate the effect of plasticity on both the shape memory effect and the superelastic effect in shape memory alloys. In addition, experimental tests were conducted to characterize the phenomenon in shape memory wire and superelastic wire. ^ The constitutive model was then implemented in within a finite element context as UMAT (User MATerial Subroutine) for the commercial finite element package ABAQUS. The model is phenomenological in nature and is based on the construction of stress-temperature phase diagram. ^ The model has been shown to be capable of capturing the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the coupling between plasticity and the shape memory effect and plasticity and the super elastic effect within acceptable limits. As a verification case a simple truss structure was built and tested and then simulated using the FEA constitutive model. The results where found to be close the experimental data. ^

The birth of the ecological movement in the 1960s motivated the conception of a new branch of Translation Studies known as Ecotranslation. This scarcely known theoretical research framework sets off from two main notions: firstly, the representation of nature in literature and secondly, the importance of the different roles and interpretations that nature can be provided with in literary works. From these bases, the goal of our pilot study was to apply this new nature-centered approach to the translations of H. G. Wells short story The Country of the Blind, as rendered into Spanish by igo Juregui (2014) and Alfonso Hernndez Cat (1919). The acknowledgement that Ecotranslation derives from a general awareness towards nature, considering it as an intrinsic feature of humankind which simultaneously influences and is affected by human behavior, motivated the following analysis of the role that Wells attributed to it in his short story The Country Of The Blind, which evinced a strong correspondence between environment and society in the original text, where nature was shown to be an essential instrument to figuratively reflect social concerns. Setting off from that critical analysis we compared how two chronologically separate translators rendered the natural elements of the original story into a different language, in this case Spanish. In general terms, data confirmed that Jauregis translation, published in 2014, encompasses a much more literal approach to the source text, rendering Wells original terminology into the closest equivalent expressions in Spanish. While Hernndez Cat, seems to have focused his work on the idea of human control over nature, even if this decision meant altering the precise way in which Wells articulated his ideas.

A large class of computational problems are characterised by frequent synchronisation, and computational requirements which change as a function of time. When such a problem is solved on a message passing multiprocessor machine [5], the combination of these characteristics leads to system performance which deteriorate in time. As the communication performance of parallel hardware steadily improves so load balance becomes a dominant factor in obtaining high parallel efficiency. Performance can be improved with periodic redistribution of computational load; however, redistribution can sometimes be very costly. We study the issue of deciding when to invoke a global load re-balancing mechanism. Such a decision policy must actively weigh the costs of remapping against the performance benefits, and should be general enough to apply automatically to a wide range of computations. This paper discusses a generic strategy for Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB) in unstructured mesh computational mechanics applications. The strategy is intended to handle varying levels of load changes throughout the run. The major issues involved in a generic dynamic load balancing scheme will be investigated together with techniques to automate the implementation of a dynamic load balancing mechanism within the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools (CAPTools) environment, which is a semi-automatic tool for parallelisation of mesh based FORTRAN codes.

Purpose. Anastomotic strictures occur in 3-30% of colorectal anastomosis and one of the main causes may be a reaction to the presence of the metal staples used for suturing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a compression anastomosis ring using the memoryshaped device in initial, i.e. nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) for the prevention of colorectal anastomotic strictures. Patients and methods. A compression anastomosis ring device (NiTi CAR 27) was used to perform compression anastomosis in 20 patients underwent left hemicolectomy and anterior resection of the rectum for carcinoma. An endoscopic check of the anastomosis was carried out at one month and at six months after surgery. Results. In 2 patients (10%) a dehiscence of the anastomosis occurred on the fifth and the eighth postoperative day. No anastomotic strictures were observed in any of the other 18 patients at six months follow-up after surgery. Conclusion. Our preliminary results suggest that the use of a compression anastomosis ring might well be a valid method of preventing anastomotic strictures in colorectal surgery. Further studies involving a larger number of patients are needed in order to confirm these preliminary results.

As the complexity of parallel applications increase, the performance limitations resulting from computational load imbalance become dominant. Mapping the problem space to the processors in a parallel machine in a manner that balances the workload of each processors will typically reduce the run-time. In many cases the computation time required for a given calculation cannot be predetermined even at run-time and so static partition of the problem returns poor performance. For problems in which the computational load across the discretisation is dynamic and inhomogeneous, for example multi-physics problems involving fluid and solid mechanics with phase changes, the workload for a static subdomain will change over the course of a computation and cannot be estimated beforehand. For such applications the mapping of loads to process is required to change dynamically, at run-time in order to maintain reasonable efficiency. The issue of dynamic load balancing are examined in the context of PHYSICA, a three dimensional unstructured mesh multi-physics continuum mechanics computational modelling code.

The self-ordered pointing test (SOPT; Petrides & Milner, 1982) is a test of non-spatial executive working memory requiring the ability to generate and monitor a sequence of responses. Although used with developmental clinical populations there are few normative data against which to compare atypical performance. Typically developing children (5!11 years) and young adults performed two versions of the SOPT, one using pictures of familiar objects and the other hard-to-verbalise abstract designs. Performance improved with age but the children did not reach adult levels of performance. Participants of all ages found the object condition easier than the abstract condition, suggesting that verbal processes are utilised by the SOPT. However, performance on the task was largely independent from verbal and nonverbal cognitive ability. Overall the results suggest that the SOPT is a sensitive measure of executive working memory.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the stimulation and inhibition of the ventral part of the medial prefrontal cortex (infralimbic cortex) on basal and stress-induced plasma levels of corticosterone and on the acquisition of aversive memory in animals maintained in control and environmental enrichment (EE) conditions. Intracortical microinjections of the GABAA antagonist picrotoxin and agonist muscimol were performed in male Wistar rats to stimulate and inhibit, respectively, the activity of the infralimbic cortex. Injections were performed 60 min before foot shock stress and training in the inhibitory avoidance task. Picrotoxin injections into the infralimbic cortex increased basal plasma levels of corticosterone. These increases were higher in EE rats which suggest that EE enhances the control exerted by infralimbic cortex over the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and corticosterone release. Muscimol injections into the infralimbic cortex reduced the stress-induced plasma levels of corticosterone and the retention latency 24 h after training in the inhibitory avoidance performance in control and EE animals, respectively. These results further suggest that the infralimbic cortex is required for the activation of the HPA axis during stress and for the acquisition of contextual aversive memories.

This thesis has as objective the interdiscursive relations in the process of language construction in use in the poetic and in the journalistic spheres, with the purpose of perceiving how the genre news is constituted in different fields of social activity, as well as to analyze the argumentative processes that structure the written discourses about the resistance episode to the group of Lampio in Mossoró in the year of 1927. The corpus of the research is constituted by the news of the period informed in the printed newspapers: Correio do povo and O Nordeste, both from Mossoró/RN, and the narratives presented in the cordis de acontecido : Mossoró in the resistance to the group of Lampio; Lampio in Mossoró in 1927, and Mossoró attacking to the group of Lampio, all potiguar poets. The analysis of the texts had as theoretical background the studies of: The texts analysis had as theoretical background The Discourse Analysis; The Argumentation Theory and the studies about Discourse Genres. We focused our discussion in the emphasis given to the news in the discursive perspective of the social-historic memory constructed in the cordis, from ideological values (political, economical, religious etc.) that pass to be a fundamental element in the constitution of the image of the resistance. Methodologically, this is a documental research, since it makes use essentially of the written document. Regarding to the nature of the data, the research is characterized as a qualitative one. In the analysis, we considered the argumentative techniques adopted in the defense of the thesis, the meaning effects suggested, and the genres mentioned, that revealed to us the manner in which the episode was informed by the newspapers and the cordis. That way, we affirm, based on the positions assumed by the announcers of the genres analyzed who defended clearly positions in favor of the defense of Mossoró, that the relation between both is captured interdiscursively, since they are asked by the same ideology, and converge to the same discursive formation, defending identical positions, and structuring their discussions with resembling argumentative techniques, reason by which take us to believe that the discourse presented in that social activity demonstrates and develops traces of a manipulation of the subject. In this case, the discursive construction of the text points towards determining standard of repetition, since the linguistic context is characterized in the journalistic field, and in the poetic field assuming, in the first instance, a local expression

Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) functions both in regulation of insulin secretion and neurotransmitter release through common downstream mediators. Therefore, we hypothesized that pancreatic -cells acquire and store the information contained in calcium pulses as a form of metabolic memory, just as neurons store cognitive information. To test this hypothesis, we developed a novel paradigm of pulsed exposure of -cells to intervals of high glucose, followed by a 24-hconsolidation period to eliminate any acute metabolic effects. Strikingly, -cells exposed to this high-glucose pulse paradigm exhibited significantly stronger insulin secretion. This metabolic memory was entirely dependent on CaMKII. Metabolic memory was reflected on the protein level by increased expression of proteins involved in glucose sensing and Ca(2+)-dependent vesicle secretion, and by elevated levels of the key -cell transcription factor MAFA. In summary, like neurons, human and mouse -cells are able to acquire and retrieve information.
