The production cross section for a Wboson and two b jets is measured using proton-proton collisions at v root s = 7 TeV in a data sample collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb(-1). The W + bbevents are selected in the W..decay mode by requiring a muon with transverse momentum pT> 25GeVand pseudorapidity |eta| < 2.1, and exactly two b-tagged jets with pT> 25GeVand |eta| < 2.4. The measured W + bbproduction cross section in the fiducial region, calculated at the level of final-state particles, is s(pp. W + bb) xB(W..) = 0.53 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) +/- 0.06 (theo.) 0.01 (lum.) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. In addition, kinematic distributions of the W + bbsystem are in agreement with the predictions of a simulation usingMadGraphandpythia. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B. V.

A distribuição e a abundância das macrófitas aquáticas são determinadas por diversos fatores que limitam a ocorrência e o crescimento destes vegetais. Vários estudos sobre ecologia de macrófitas aquáticas têm sido realizados na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Itanhaém devido à grande abundância e riqueza de espécies de macrófitas aquáticas de água doce e salobra com diferentes formas de vida nos trechos de rios localizados na planície costeira, A macrófita aquática alvo deste estudo é a Limnobium laevigatum (Humb. & Bonpl. Ex Willd.) Heine que pode crescer enraizada nas margens dos rios ou flutuantes livres em locais com maior profundidade.Os objetivos deste trabalho são: (a) gerar um mapa de distribuição de L. laevigatum na planície costeira da bacia do rio Itanhaém; (b) verificar a existência de diferenças na abundância de L. laevigatum nos diferentes bancos desta espécie; (c) identificar quais são as variáveis abióticas responsáveis pela distribuição e a abundância de L. laevigatum na planície costeira. Para gerar o mapa de distribuição os principais rios da planície costeira foram percorridos em fevereiro de 2013 e em abril de 2015 e os locais de ocorrência foram georreferenciados. Nos locais de ocorrência foram coletadas amostras do vegetal para determinação da biomassa e teores de nitrogênio e fósforo na biomassa. Além disso foram feitas medidas de temperatura, pH, condutividade elétrica, oxigênio dissolvido e turbidez e coletas de água e sedimento para a determinação de nitrogênio e fósforo totais. Aos valores de biomassa foi aplicada uma Análise de Variância para verificar a existência de diferenças significativas entre os locais de ocorrência. Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit beschreibt Untersuchungen über die zellulären Mechanismen, die zur Bildung dieser DNA-Schäden führen, sowie über die biologischen Auswirkungen dieser Schäden. Die Untersuchungen zu Uracil in der DNA wurden in ung-knockout-MEFs und Mäusen durchgeführt, die es erlauben, die Konsequenzen eines Ausfalls der wichtigsten Reparaturglykosylase für Uracil zu beleuchten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine deutliche Akkumulation von Uracil in den ung-/--Mausfibroblasten im Vergleich zum Wildtyp. In frisch isolierten Leber- und Milzzellen der Mäuse konnte dieser genotypspezifische Unterschied, wenn auch weniger ausgeprägt, ebenso beobachtet werden, nicht jedoch in reifen Spermien. Dieser gewebespezifische Unterschied und die quantitativ stärker ausgeprägte Akkumulation in ung-/--Mausfibroblasten im Vergleich zu den Mäusegeweben gab Anlass zur Vermutung, dass die Proliferation der Zellen für den Haupteintrag an Uracil in die DNA verantwortlich ist. Erstmals konnte in Versuche mit konfluenten (nicht mehr proliferierenden) ung-/--Mausfibroblasten gezeigt werden, dass nicht die spontane hydrolytische Desaminierung von Cytosin, sondern der Fehleinbau von dUMP während der DNA-Replikation die Hauptquelle für Uracil in der DNA von Säugerzellen darstellt. Da der Uracilmetabolismus ein wichtiges Target in der Chemotherapie ist, lag es nahe, das zur Verfügung stehende ung-knockout-Modell der MEFs zur Untersuchung mit Fluorpyrimidinen, die als Zytostatika verwendet werden, einzusetzen. Da bisher die Ursachen der beobachteten Apoptose der Tumorzellen und aller anderen metabolisch hochaktiven Zellen eines behandelten Organismus noch nicht vollständig verstanden ist, wurden diese Zellen mit verschiedenen Fluorpyrimidinen behandelt, die als Thymidylatsynthasehemmer die de novo Synthese von Thymidin unterbinden. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass ung-/- Mausfibroblasten, im Gegensatz zu ung+/+ Mausfibroblasten, verstärkt Uracil in der DNA akkumulieren. Obwohl die ung+/+ Mausfibroblasten keine erhöhten Uracil-Spiegel in der DNA aufwiesen, zeigten sie bei Inkubation mit einem der beiden Thymidylatsynthasehemmern, 5-Fluoruracil (5-FU), die gleiche Sensitivität in einem nachfolgenden Proliferationsversuch wie die ung-/- Mausfibroblasten. Dies lässt darauf schließen, dass weder Reparatur noch Einbau von Uracil in die DNA für die beobachtete Toxizität dieser Zytostatika notwendig sind. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit war die Untersuchung des DNA-schädigenden Potenzials endogener ROS, die aus dem Fremdstoffmetabolismus stammen. Dazu wurden V79-Zellen verwendet, die mit dem humanen Enzym Cytochrom 2E1 (CYP2E1) transfiziert wurden (V79 CYP2E1) sowie Zellen, die ebenfalls durch Transfektion das humane Enzym Cytochromreduktase (auch Oxidoreduktase genannt) überexprimieren (V79 hOR). Beide Enzyme sind zusammen an der Hydroxylierung von Fremdstoffen beteiligt, bei der die Reduktion von molekularem Sauerstoff durch Übertragung von zwei Elektronen notwendig ist. Wird anstatt zweier Elektronen in Folge nur eines auf den Sauerstoff übertragen, so führt dieser von der Substratoxygenierung enkoppelte Vorgang zur Bildung von Superoxid. Daher galt es zu klären, ob das so erzeugte Superoxid und daraus gebildete ROS in der Lage sind, die DNA zu schädigen. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass die Überexpression von CYP2E1 nicht zu einem erhöhten basalen Gleichgewichtsspiegel oxidativer DNA-Schäden führt und die Metabolisierung von Ethanol durch dieses Enzym ebenfalls keine DNA-Modifikationen verursacht. Die Überexpression der Cytochromreduktase hingegen führte gegenüber dem Wildtyp zu einem erhöhten basalen Gleichgewichtsspiegel oxidativer Basenmodifikationen nach Depletion von Glutathion, einem wichtigen zellulären Antioxidans. Im Mikrokerntest, der gentoxische Ereignisse wie Chromosomenbrüche in Zellen aufzeigt, zeigte sich schon ohne Glutathion-Depletion eine doppelt so hohe Mikrokernrate im Vergleich zum Wildtyp. In weiteren Versuchen wurden die V79-hOR-Zellen mit dem chinoiden Redoxcycler Durochinon inkubiert, um zu untersuchen, ob das vermutlich durch die Reduktase vermittelte Redoxcycling über Generierung von ROS in der Lage ist, einen oxidativen DNA-Schaden und Toxizität zu verursachen. Hier zeigte sich, dass die Überexpression der Reduktase Voraussetzung für Toxizität und den beobachteten DNA-Schaden ist. Die Wildtyp-Zellen zeigten weder einen DNA-Schaden noch Zytotoxizität, auch eine zusätzliche Glutathion-Depletion änderte nichts an dem Befund. Die V79-hOR-Zellen hingegen reagierten auf die Inkubation mit Durochinon mit einer konzentrationsabhängigen Zunahme der Einzelstrangbrüche und oxidativen Basenmodifikationen, wobei sich der DNA-Schaden durch vorherige Glutathion-Depletion verdoppeln ließ.

Depending on the regulatory regime they are subject to, governments may or may not be allowed to hand out state aid to private firms. The economic justification for state aid can address several issues present in the competition for capital and the competition for transfers from the state. First, there are principal-agent problems involved at several stages. Self-interested politicians might enter state aid deals that are the result of extensive rent-seeking activities of organized interest groups. Thus the institutional design of political systems will have an effect on the propensity of a jurisdiction to award state aid. Secondly, fierce competition for firm locations can lead to over-spending. This effect is stronger if the politicians do not take into account the entirety of the costs created by their participation in the firm location race. Thirdly, state aid deals can be incomplete and not in the interest of the citizens. This applies if there are no sanctions if firms do not meet their obligations from receiving aid, such as creating a certain number of jobs or not relocating again for a certain amount of time. The separation of ownership and control in modern corporations leads to principal-agent problems on the side of the aid recipient as well. Managers might receive personal benefits from subsidies, the use of which is sometimes less monitored than private finance. This can eventually be to the detriment of the shareholders. Overall, it can be concluded that state aid control should also serve the purpose of regulating the contracting between governments and firms. An extended mandate for supervision by the European Commission could include requirements to disincentive the misuse of state aid. The Commission should also focus on the corporate governance regime in place in the jurisdiction that awards the aid as well as in the recipient firm.

This research was designed to answer the question of which direction the restructuring of financial regulators should take – consolidation or fragmentation. This research began by examining the need for financial regulation and its related costs. It then continued to describe what types of regulatory structures exist in the world; surveying the regulatory structures in 15 jurisdictions, comparing them and discussing their strengths and weaknesses. This research analyzed the possible regulatory structures using three methodological tools: Game-Theory, Institutional-Design, and Network-Effects. The incentives for regulatory action were examined in Chapter Four using game theory concepts. This chapter predicted how two regulators with overlapping supervisory mandates will behave in two different states of the world (where they can stand to benefit from regulating and where they stand to lose). The insights derived from the games described in this chapter were then used to analyze the different supervisory models that exist in the world. The problem of information-flow was discussed in Chapter Five using tools from institutional design. The idea is based on the need for the right kind of information to reach the hands of the decision maker in the shortest time possible in order to predict, mitigate or stop a financial crisis from occurring. Network effects and congestion in the context of financial regulation were discussed in Chapter Six which applied the literature referring to network effects in general in an attempt to conclude whether consolidating financial regulatory standards on a global level might also yield other positive network effects. Returning to the main research question, this research concluded that in general the fragmented model should be preferable to the consolidated model in most cases as it allows for greater diversity and information-flow. However, in cases in which close cooperation between two authorities is essential, the consolidated model should be used.

Corruption is, in the last two decades, considered as one of the biggest problems within the international community, which harms not only a particular state or society but the whole world. The discussion on corruption in law and economics approach is mainly run under the veil of Public choice theory and principal-agent model. Based on this approach the strong international initiatives taken by the UN, the OECD and the Council of Europe, provided various measures and tools in order to support and guide countries in their combat against corruption. These anti-corruption policies created a repression -prevention-transparency model for corruption combat. Applying this model, countries around the world adopted anti-corruption strategies as part of their legal rules. Nevertheless, the recent researches on the effects of this move show non impressive results. Critics argue that “one size does not fit all” because the institutional setting of countries around the world varies. Among the countries which experience problems of corruption, even though they follow the dominant anti-corruption trends, are transitional, post-socialist countries. To this group belong the countries which are emerging from centrally planned to an open market economy. The socialist past left traces on institutional setting, mentality of the individuals and their interrelation, particularly in the domain of public administration. If the idiosyncrasy of these countries is taken into account the suggestion in this thesis is that in public administration in post-socialist countries, instead of dominant anti-corruption scheme repression-prevention-transparency, corruption combat should be improved through the implementation of a new one, structure-conduct-performance. The implementation of this model is based on three regulatory pyramids: anti-corruption, disciplinary anti-corruption and criminal anti-corruption pyramid. This approach asks public administration itself to engage in corruption combat, leaving criminal justice system as the ultimate weapon, used only for the very harmful misdeeds.

In doing so, it offers an explanation for data protection law from an economic perspective and provides a basis for the evaluation of further data protection measures.

Clinical-forensic examination of strangulation victims is an increasing part of the routine of many forensic pathology institutes. The cases examined between 2004 and 2008 at the Institute of Legal Medicine of the Hanover Medical School were retrospectively analysed. In total, the study material comprised 218 victims (175 females and 43 males). In 80.7 %, the clinical-forensic examination was performed within 24 hours after the incident. In the overwhelming number of cases, the alleged perpetrator was no stranger. 128 victims (58.7 %) had strangulation marks, 32 victims (14.7 %) ligature marks and 65 victims (29.8 %) nail marks. Four victims showed injuries of the laryngeal and pharyngeal structures (reddening, hematomas, swelling and in one case a fracture of the cricoid cartilage on both sides). Extensive petechiae were predominantly seen in the conjunctivae, the buccal mucosa and the skin of the face in cases where the victims suffered a loss of consciousness. 87 cases (39.9% were classified as potentially life-threatening and 30 cases (13.8 %) as acute life-threatening events. This classification is of legal relevance for the penalty. In addition, 60 victims experienced sexual violence. These results suggest that early clinical-forensic examination is crucial for documenting forensic evidence in support of police investigations and may deliver significant details relevant in court.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is one of the most aggressive malignancies implying a very poor prognosis for patients even under therapy. Since it is known that SCLC cells exhibit neurone-like characteristics, we investigated whether a neuronal induction medium (NID) consisting of indomethacin (200 ?M), 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX, 500 ?M) and insulin (5 ?g/ml) induces neuronal differentiation and by this reduces malignancy of SCLC in vitro.
