The semantic role of beneficiary is usually conceptualized in very general terms, typically without an intensive definition of what can constitute a benefit in the particular construction under study. Among those accounts that have proposed to discuss benefaction as related to the notion(s) of surrogation, substituting, and/or deputing, Kittilä (2005) proposes a distinction between recipients, beneficiaries, and recipient-beneficiaries based on the binary features [reception] and [substitutive benefaction]; the recipient includes only reception (and the beneficiary only substitutive benefaction), whereas both features are relevant with recipient-beneficiaries. This paper proposes an alternative account (i) by defining benefaction proper in terms of a prototype related to possession (and thereby to reception) and a periphery, and (ii) by defining surrogation as a separate notion that can, but need not, coalesce with benefaction proper. Thus, the beneficiaries’ condition improves because they are relieved from having to carry out a given action themselves.

The use of paraffin slides and tissue microarrays (TMA) is indispensable for translational research. However, storage of paraffin slides over time has a substantial detrimental effect on the quality and reliability of immunohistochemistry stains. Particularly affected by this issue may be any collaborative efforts where paraffin slides or TMAs are shipped to central laboratories and then 'biobanked' for some time until use. This article summarizes some of the key issues affecting loss of antigenicity on paraffin slides and some simple storage solutions to help maintain high quality immunohistochemistry results when paraffin slides must be stored for a certain time prior to use.

Histone acetylation is a central event in transcriptional activation. The importance of this modification in mammalian development is highlighted by knockout studies that revealed loss of the histone acetyltransferases GCN5, p300, or CBP results in embryonic lethality. Furthermore, early embryogenesis is sensitive to the dosage of p300 and CBP since double p300 +/−CBP+/− heterozygotes die in utero, although either single heterozygote survives. PCAF and GCN5 physically interact with p300 and CBP in vitro. To determine whether these two groups of HATs interact functionally in vivo, we created mice lacking one or more allele of p300, GCN5 or PCAF. As expected, we found that mice heterozygous for any one of these null alleles are viable. The majority of GCN5 p300 double heterozygotes also survive to adulthood with no apparent abnormalities. However, a portion of these mice die prior to birth. These embryos are developmentally stunted and exhibit increased apoptosis compared to wild type or single GCN5 or p300 heterozygous littermates at E8.5. Tissue specification is unaffected in these embryos but organ formation is compromised. In contrast, no abnormalities were observed in mice harboring mutations in both PCAF and p300 , emphasizing the specificity of HAT functions in mammalian development. ^ Since GCN5 null embryos die early in embryogenesis because of a marked increase in apoptosis, studies of its function and mechanism in late development and in tissue specific differentiation are precluded. Here, we also report the establishment of a GCN5 null embryonic stem cell line and a conditional floxGCN5 mouse line, which will serve as powerful genetic tools to examine in depth the function of GCN5 in mammalian development and in adult tissues. ^

We study the dynamic response of a wind turbine structure subjected to theoretical seismic motions, taking into account the rotational component of ground shaking. Models are generated for a shallow moderate crustal earthquake in the Madrid Region (Spain). Synthetic translational and rotational time histories are computed using the Discrete Wavenumber Method, assuming a point source and a horizontal layered earth structure. These are used to analyze the dynamic response of a wind turbine, represented by a simple finite element model. Von Mises stress values at different heights of the tower are used to study the dynamical structural response to a set of synthetic ground motion time histories

A set of problems concerning the behaviour of a suddenly disturbed ideal floating zone is considered. Mathematical techniques of asymptotic expansions arc used to solve these problems. It is seen that many already available solutions, most of them concerning liquids enclosed in cavities, will be regarded as starting approximations which are valid except in the proximity of the free surface which laterally bounds the floating zone. In particular, the problem of the linear spin-up of an initially cylindrical floating zone is considered in some detail. The presence of a recircuiating fluid pattern near the free surface is detected. This configuration is attributed to the interplay between Coriolis forces and the azimuthal component of the viscous forces.

This is an account of some aspects of the geometry of Kahler affine metrics based on considering them as smooth metric measure spaces and applying the comparison geometry of Bakry-Emery Ricci tensors. Such techniques yield a version for Kahler affine metrics of Yau s Schwarz lemma for volume forms. By a theorem of Cheng and Yau, there is a canonical Kahler affine Einstein metric on a proper convex domain, and the Schwarz lemma gives a direct proof of its uniqueness up to homothety. The potential for this metric is a function canonically associated to the cone, characterized by the property that its level sets are hyperbolic affine spheres foliating the cone. It is shown that for an n -dimensional cone, a rescaling of the canonical potential is an n -normal barrier function in the sense of interior point methods for conic programming. It is explained also how to construct from the canonical potential Monge-Ampère metrics of both Riemannian and Lorentzian signatures, and a mean curvature zero conical Lagrangian submanifold of the flat para-Kahler space.

The two-body problem subject to a constant radial thrust is analyzed as a planar motion. The description of the problem is performed in terms of three perturbation methods: DROMO and two others due to Deprit. All of them rely on Hansen?s ideal frame concept. An explicit, analytic, closed-form solution is obtained for this problem when the initial orbit is circular (Tsien problem), based on the DROMO special perturbation method, and expressed in terms of elliptic integral functions. The analytical solution to the Tsien problem is later used as a reference to test the numerical performance of various orbit propagation methods, including DROMO and Deprit methods, as well as Cowell and Kustaanheimo?Stiefel methods.
