In terms of physical and genetic features studied nodules are assigned to the sedimentational manganese-iron type (Canary Basin) and to the iron-containing type (Guyana Basin). They are enriched in Fe, Co and Pb and depleted in Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn. Cores of the nodules from the Canary Basin consist primarily of peridotite, gabbro, dolerite, and metamorphic rock. Great predominance of peridotite and gabbro indicates that blocks of ocean crust underwent considerable displacement, bringing the third and fourth layers of a crust to the surface.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) drilled at five sites in the western Atlantic Ocean during Leg 207. The objective of the drilling was to recover samples from the shallow buried Cretaceous and Paleocene sediments on the Demerara Rise off Suriname, South America. These sediments are being studied for a number of paleoceanographic studies of the low-latitude Atlantic off the coast of Suriname (this volume). For this report two sites, Sites 1257 and 1258, were selected for silicoflagellate study because shipboard results suggested these two sites as the only ones with siliceous microfossils of Paleocene-Eocene age. The Demarara Rise is a predominant submarine plateau located off the coast of Suriname and French Guyana. This plateau stretches 380 km along the coast and is 220 km wide. The depth to seafloor along the depth transect drilled during ODP Leg 207 ranges from 1000 to 4500 m, but most of the remainder of the plateau lies in shallow water of 700 m. Much of this area is covered with 2-3 km of sediments. The Demerara Rise is built on rifted Precambrian continental crust. The plateau was one of the last places to be in contact with West Africa during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean (see Shipboard Scientific Party, 2004). Site 1257 (9°27'N, 54°20'W; water depth = 2951 m) is located on a terrace on the northwestern Demerara Rise ~400 km from Suriname. This is the second deepest water depth location drilled during Leg 207. Sediments from this area range in age from Miocene to Albian. This area is part of the transform fault that separated from Central America and western Africa. Three holes were drilled at Site 1257. Site 1258 (9°26'N, 54°43'W; water depth = 3192 m) is located on the western slope of the Demerara Rise ~380 km north of Suriname. This site is the distal and deepest site of the paleoceanographic depth transect drilled across Demerara Rise during Leg 207. The area is located on a ridge of Paleocene sediments cropping out on the seafloor. Three holes were drilled at Site 1258, but only one is studied.

Ceara Rise, located east the Amazon River mouth, is covered with a thick blanket of pelagic carbonate and hemipelagic terrigenous sediment. The terrigenous component has been extracted from 57 bulk sediment samples at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 925 and 929 on Ceara Rise to obtain a Cenozoic record of riverine discharge from northern South America. From the early Eocene to early Miocene (55-20 Ma), terrigenous accumulation was dominated by moderate amounts of generally large-grained, gray to green sediment especially depleted in elements that are enriched in post-Archaean shale (e.g. Cs, Th, Yb). However, pulsed inputs of relatively small-grained, gray to green terrigenous sediment less depleted in the above elements occurred in the late Eocene and Oligocene. The accumulation of terrigenous sediment decreased significantly until 16.5 Ma. In the middle Miocene (16.5-13 Ma), terrigenous accumulation was dominated by small amounts of small-grained, tan sediment notably depleted in Na and heavy rare earth elements. The accumulation rate of terrigenous sediment increased markedly from the latest Miocene (10 Ma) to the present day, a change characterized by deposition of gray-green sediment enriched in elements that are enriched in post-Archaean shale. Observed changes in terrigenous sediment at Ceara Rise record tectonism and erosion in northern South America. The Brazil and Guyana shields supplied sediment to the eastern South American margin until the middle Miocene (20-16.5 Ma) when a period of thrusting, shortening and uplift changed the source region, probably first to highly weathered and proximal Phanerozoic sediments. By the late Miocene (9 Ma), there was a transcontinental connection between the Andes and eastern South America. Weathering products derived from the Andes have increasingly dominated terrigenous deposition at Ceara Rise since the Late Miocene and especially since the late Pliocene.

Pore water profiles from 24 stations in the South Atlantic (located in the Guinea, Angola, Cape, Guyana, and Argentine basins) show good correlations of oxygen and silicon, suggesting microbially mediated dissolution of biogenic silica. We used simple analytical transport and reaction models to show the tight coupling of the reconstructed process kinetics of aerobic respiration and silicon regeneration. A generic transport and reaction model successfully reproduced the majority of Si pore water profiles from aerobic respiration rates, confirming that the dissolution of biogenic silica (BSi) occurs proportionally to O2 consumption. Possibly limited to well-oxygenated sediments poor in BSi, benthic Si fluxes can be inferred from O2 uptake with satisfactory accuracy. Compared to aerobic respiration kinetics, the solubility of BSi emerged as a less influential parameter for silicon regeneration. Understanding the role of bacteria for silicon regeneration requires further investigations, some of which are outlined. The proposed aerobic respiration control of benthic silicon cycling is suitable for benthic-pelagic models. The empirical relation of BSi dissolution to aerobic respiration can be used for regionalization assessments and estimates of the silicon budget to increase the understanding of global primary and export production patterns.

The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) data set contains monthly discharge measurements for 1018 stations located throughout the world. The period of record varies widely from station to station, with a mean of 21.5 years. These data were digitized from published UNESCO archives by Charles Voromarty, Balaze Fekete, and B.A. Tucker of the Complex Systems Research Center (CSRC) at the University of New Hampshire. River discharge is typically measured through the use of a rating curve that relates local water level height to discharge. This rating curve is used to estimate discharge from the observed water level. The rating curves are periodically rechecked and recalibrated through on-site measurement of discharge and river stage.
