The contribution of Victor Hugo to the liberation, emancipation, and changing perceptions of women in 19th century French society

The over-riding perceptions of Victor Hugo’s attitudes towards women are intensely coloured by his deep-seated Romanticism and his well-testified, stifling and over-bearing treatment of women in his personal life. As such, Hugo’s contribution to the feminist struggle of his time has been woefully overlooked in the larger scheme of his social and political activism. Through a close examination of his largely unstudied public discourse on women’s rights, this thesis situates Hugo’s feminist views firmly in the context of Enlightenment feminism and 19th century feminism, while also drawing heavily on the illuminating principles of Enlightenment feminism. In particular, this thesis examines Hugo’s support for several of the most determining issues of 19th century French feminism, including women’s right to education, equal citizenship, universal suffrage rights, and the issue of regulated prostitution. Further, by examining the way in which Hugo’s views on women’s maternal role extended far beyond the limited vision of domesticity bolstered by the ideology of ‘republican motherhood’, this thesis engages in a re-appraisal of Hugo’s literary representation of maternity which identifies the maternal as a universal quality of devotion and self-sacrifice to which all humankind must aspire for the creation of a just, egalitarian, and democratic society. Though at times inevitably constrained by his Romanticism, this thesis demonstrates the extent to which Hugo’s feminism is grounded in his wider vision of social emancipation and is underpinned by a profound empathy, compassion, and moral conscience – qualities which are just as fundamental today, as they were for Hugo when participating in the fitful, though decisive, feminist struggle in 19th century France.

Contesting postliberalism: governmentality or emancipation?

This article takes the form of a debate between two theorists who work with the concept of postliberalism. Following an introduction reflecting upon what is at stake in this debate, each contribution is organised in three sections. Firstly, as an opening gambit, both authors outline their basic understanding of the concept of postliberalism. Secondly, the authors stake out their very different claims as to whether or not postliberal approaches challenge neoliberal understandings sufficiently to create new conditions for emancipa- tion or merely maintain governmentality. In the respective final sections of their con- tributions, the authors clarify the workings of postliberal approaches in policy practice.

Jubilee and the Limits of African American Freedom after Emancipation

Scholarship generated in the post-civil rights US underpins a growing consensus that any honest confrontation with the American past requires an acknowledgment both of the nation’s foundations in racially-based slave labour and of the critical role that the enslaved played in ending that system. But scholars equally need to examine why the end of slavery did not deliver freedom, but instead – after a short-lived ‘jubilee’ during which freedpeople savoured their ‘brief moment in the sun’ – opened up a period of extreme repression and violence. This article traces the political trajectory of one prominent ex-slave and Republican party organiser, Elias Hill, to assess the constraints in which black grassroots activists operated. Though mainly concerned with the dashed hopes of African Americans, their experience of a steep reversal is in many ways the shared and profoundly significant legacy of ex-slaves across the former plantation societies of the Atlantic world.

Gathering Antipathy:Irish Immigrants and Race in America's Age of Emancipation

Contribution to an edited collection on the Irish Diaspora focusing on the antagonism between Famine-era Irish immigrants to the US and their estrangement from the main currents of social reform (including antislavery). An intervention in an ongoing debate over immigrant Irish and their ostensible embrace of a proslavery outlook in the late antebellum United States.

Arranjos Produtivos no setor agrícola como estratégia de desenvolvimento gradual de regiões periféricas: Um estudo de caso em Belém do Pará, na região norte do Brasil

Este artigo discute os arranjos produtivos locais em atividades relacionadas ao setor de produção agrícola como uma estratégia de desenvolvimento econômico local e de inclusão social. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, baseada na aplicação de três trabalhos documentais desenvolvidos no Programa de Mestrado da Universidade de Taubaté, SP. Os resultados indicaram que a aplicação do conceito de arranjo produtivo no setor primário é uma prática em exercício na região estudada, e pode proporcionar desenvolvimento naquela localidade, inserindo o pequeno e médio produtor no círculo virtuoso do desenvolvimento regional. O estudo indica a necessidade de ampliar o acesso às fontes de financiamento e de formação de mão de- obra qualificada. É também necessário, em parceria com o poder público, criar mecanismos de redução da distância entre o produtor rural e o mercado consumidor, reduzindo os conflitos típicos da visão centro-periferia.

Antecedentes de empresas portuguesas para uma internacionalização gradual de sucesso

O presente trabalho relata e analisa o processo de internacionalização tendo em atenção os antecedentes que conduziram ao sucesso das empresas analisadas. O método utilizado foi a pesquisa qualitativa, e envolveu sete entrevistas individuais realizadas numa pequena e média empresa (PME), a Valart (cinco entrevistas), e duas multinacionais, a Bosch e a Quimialmel (um quadro superior entrevistado em cada uma). Os resultados obtidos foram discutidos à luz da literatura, após a transcrição das entrevistas e codificação dos dados primários recolhidos. Pretendeu-se entender como é que as grandes multinacionais Bosch e Quimialmel alcançaram o seu sucesso a nível internacional, assim como analisar, também, como a Valart cresceu e expandiu-se ao longo do tempo. Foi então realizada uma revisão da literatura em que foram abordados temas como a internacionalização, a globalização, o marketing e a inovação, conceitos relevantes ao desenvolvimento deste estudo, revisão essa completada após o trabalho de campo, seguindo-se o grounded theory. No conteúdo do trabalho também são relatadas as atividades desenvolvidas durante o estágio na Valart, e é feita uma análise da empresa e do produto principal em questão (porta-contentores marítimos ou sideloaders). Assim, com a revisão da literatura e análise dos resultados obtidos foi possível retirar conclusões e tecer recomendações de ação / gestão na Valart, tais como investir em colaboradores especializados, abrir um departamento de marketing interligado com o comercial, e sempre apoiado em ferramentas informáticas que poderão fomentar a inovação. Os antecedentes que guiam as empresas analisadas a uma internacionalização de sucesso, internacionalização essa que tem sido gradual e por fases, nas empresas abordadas, incluem: rede de contactos internacional, competência da força de vendas, investigação e desenvolvimento (I&D) que leva a produtos diferenciados, parcerias com universidades, orientação para o cliente, existência de uma marca forte, estrutura de custos eficiente, e aproveitamento do capital humano interno. Por fim, é relevante referir que a crise interna em Portugal tem sido um fator incentivador da procura de diversificação de mercados a nível internacional. Como resultado deste estudo foi apresentado um artigo na conferência internacional ICERI 2014 (Au-Yong-Oliveira e Coelho, 2014).

Growth of boehmite nanofibers by assembling nanoparticles with surfactant micelles

It is known that boehmite (AlOOH) nanofibers formed in the presence of nonionic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) surfactant at 373 K. A novel approach is proposed in this study for the growth of the boehmite nanofibers: when fresh aluminum hydrate precipitate was added at regular interval to initial mixture of boehmite and PEO surfactant at 373 K, the nanofibers grow from 40 to 50 nm long to over 100 nm. It is believed that the surfactant micelles play an important role in the nanofiber growth: directing the assembly of aluminum hydrate particles through hydrogen bonding with the hydroxyls on the surface of aluminum hydrate particles. Meanwhile a gradual improvement in the crystallinity of the fibers during growth is observed and attributed to the Ostwald ripening process. This approach allows us to precisely control the size and morphology of boehmite nanofibers using soft chemical methods and could be useful for low temperature, aqueous syntheses of other oxide nanomaterials with tailorable structural specificity such as size, dimension and morphology.

Mining in Northern British Columbia

The history of the settlement of the province is tied to patterns of exploration and min development. In Northern British Columbia the Cariboo goldfields provided the impetus for settlement of the region and the beginning for mining to extend into the watern and northern regions in a series of minor gold rushes. The northern half of the province has a geological diverse mineral base that supports a wide variety of mining, and a gradual improvement of exploration and mining methods due to scientific knowledge and technology provided opportunities for lode gold and base metal mines to be developed. The success of mining is based on world ore prices and competitive markets that impact the economic viability of developing a mine. Mining faces increasing pressures in the northern half of the province due to other resource values, such as tourism or protected areas, that claim and compete for a similar land base.
