Elevated blood cholesterol is an important risk factor associated with atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Several studies have reported a decrease in serum cholesterol during the consumption of large doses of fermented dairy products or lactobacillus strains. The proposed mechanism for this effect is the removal or assimilation of intestinal cholesterol by the bacteria, reducing cholesterol absorption. Although this effect was demonstrated in vitro, its relevance in vivo is still controversial. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the role of lactobacilli in atherogenesis. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus delbrueckii on cholesterol metabolism in germ-free mice and the possible hypocholesterolemic and antiatherogenic action of these bacteria using atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein E (apo E) knock-out (KO) mice. For this purpose, Swiss/NIH germ-free mice were monoassociated with L. delbrueckii and fed a hypercholesterolemic diet for four weeks. In addition, apo E KO mice were fed a normal chow diet and treated with L. delbrueckii for 6 weeks. There was a reduction in cholesterol excretion in germ-free mice, which was not associated with changes in blood or liver cholesterol concentration. In apo E KO mice, no effect of L. delbrueckii was detected in blood, liver or fecal cholesterol. The atherosclerotic lesion in the aorta was also similar in mice receiving or not these bacteria. In conclusion, these results suggest that, although L. delbrueckii treatment was able to reduce cholesterol excretion in germ-free mice, no hypocholesterolemic or antiatherogenic effect was observed in apo E KO mice.

Germ cell tumors present contrasting biological and molecular features compared to many solid tumors, which may partially explain their unusual sensitivity to chemotherapy. Reduced DNA repair capacity and enhanced induction of apoptosis appear to be key factors in the sensitivity of germ cell tumors to cisplatin. Despite substantial cure rates, some patients relapse and subsequently die of their disease. Intensive doses of chemotherapy are used to counter mechanisms of drug resistance. So far, high-dose chemotherapy with hematopoietic stem cell support for solid tumors is used only in the setting of testicular germ cell tumors. In that indication, high-dose chemotherapy is given as the first or late salvage treatment for patients with either relapsed or progressive tumors after initial conventional salvage chemotherapy. High-dose chemotherapy is usually given as two or three sequential cycles using carboplatin and etoposide with or without ifosfamide. The administration of intensive therapy carries significant side effects and can only be efficiently and safely conducted in specialized referral centers to assure optimum patient care outcomes. In breast and ovarian cancer, most studies have demonstrated improvement in progression-free survival (PFS), but overall survival remained unchanged. Therefore, most of these approaches have been dropped. In germ cell tumors, clinical trials are currently investigating novel therapeutic combinations and active treatments. In particular, the integration of targeted therapies constitutes an important area of research for patients with a poor prognosis.

The germ fraction with pericarp (bran) is generated in the industrial processing of corn kernel, and it is used for oil extraction and animal feed. This study evaluated the nutritional and protein quality of this fraction in relation to whole corn. The proximate composition, mineral contents, and amino acid profile of the germ fraction with pericarp and of whole corn were determined. A 4-week experiment was conducted using 36 weanling male Wistar rats, and three 10%-protein diets (reference, germ with 15% lipids and casein with 15% lipids), two 6%-protein diets (whole corn and casein), and a protein-free diet were prepared. The germ showed higher contents of proteins, lipids, dietary fiber (27.8 g.100 g-1), ash, minerals (Fe and Zn- approximately 5 mg.100 g-1), and lysine (57.2 mg.g-1 protein) than those of corn. The germ presented good quality protein (Relative Protein Efficiency Ratio-RPER = 80%; Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score-PDCAAS = 86%), higher than that of corn (RPER = 49%; PDCAAS = 60%). The corn germ fraction with pericarp is rich in dietary fiber, and it is a source of good quality protein as well as of iron and zinc, and its use as nutritive raw material is indicated in food products for human consumption.

Beaver Dam battle field is just in the suburbs of the thriving village of Thorold, and the monument covers the remains of several soldiers whose bodies were unearthed during the building of the new Welland Canal at that place.

La thse prsente une description gomtrique dun germe de famille gnrique dployant un champ de vecteurs rel analytique avec un foyer faible lorigine et son complexifi : le feuilletage holomorphe singulier associ. On montre que deux germes de telles familles sont orbitalement analytiquement quivalents si et seulement si les germes de familles de diffomorphismes dployant la complexification de leurs fonctions de retour de Poincar sont conjugues par une conjugaison analytique relle. Le caractre rel de la famille correspond sa Z2-quivariance dans R^4, et cela sexprime comme linvariance du plan rel sous le flot du systme laquelle, son tour, entrane que lexpansion asymptotique de la fonction de Poincar est relle quand le paramtre est rel. Le pullback du plan rel aprs clatement par la projection monoidal standard intersecte le feuilletage en une bande de Mbius relle. La technique dclatement des singularits permet aussi de donner une rponse la question de la ralisation dun germe de famille dployant un germe de diffomorphisme avec un point fixe de multiplicateur gal 1 et de codimension un comme application de semi-monodromie dune famille gnrique dployant un foyer faible dordre un. Afin dtudier lespace des orbites de lapplication de Poincar, nous utilisons le point de vue de Glutsyuk, puisque la dynamique est linarisable auprs des points singuliers : pour les valeurs rels du paramtre, notre dmarche, classique, utilise une mthode gomtrique, soit un changement de coordone (coordone droulante) dans lequel la dynamique devient beaucoup plus simple. Mais le prix payer est que la gomtrie locale du plan complexe ambiante devient une surface de Riemann, sur laquelle deux notions de translation sont dfinies. Aprs avoir pris le quotient par le relvement de la dynamique nous obtenons lespace des orbites, ce qui savre tre lunion de trois tores complexes plus les points singuliers (lespace rsultant est non-Hausdorff). Les translations, le caractre rel de lapplication de Poincar et le fait que cette application est un carr relient les diffrentes composantes du module de Glutsyuk. Cette proprit implique donc le fait quune seule composante de linvariant Glutsyuk est indpendante.

Alors que les hypothses de valence et de dominance hmisphrique droite ont longtemps t utilises afin dexpliquer les rsultats de recherches portant sur le traitement motionnel de stimuli verbaux et non-verbaux, la littrature sur le traitement de mots motionnels est gnralement en dsaccord avec ces deux hypothses et semble converger vers celle du dcours temporel. Cette dernire hypothse stipule que le dcours temporal lors du traitement de certains aspects du systme smantique est plus lent pour lhmisphre droit que pour lhmisphre gauche. Lobjectif de cette thse est dexaminer la faon dont les mots motionnels sont traits par les hmisphres crbraux chez des individus jeunes et gs. cet effet, la premire tude a pour objectif dvaluer lhypothse du dcours temporel en examinant les patrons dactivations relatif au traitement de mots motionnels par les hmisphres gauche et droit en utilisant un paradigme damorage smantique et une tche dvaluation. En accord avec lhypothse du dcours temporel, les rsultats obtenus pour les hommes montrent que lamorage dbute plus tt dans lhmisphre gauche et plus tard dans lhmisphre droit. Par contre, les rsultats obtenus pour les femmes sont plutt en accord avec lhypothse de valence, car les mots valence positive sont principalement amorcs dans lhmisphre gauche, alors que les mots valence ngative sont principalement amorcs dans lhmisphre droit. Puisque les femmes sont considres plus motives que les hommes, les rsultats ainsi obtenus peuvent tre la consquence des effets de la tche, qui exige une dcision explicite au sujet de la cible. La deuxime tude a pour objectif dexaminer la possibilit que la prservation avec lge de lhabilet traiter des mots motionnels sexprime par un phnomne compensatoire dactivations bilatrales frquemment observes chez des individus gs et maintenant un haut niveau de performance, ce qui est galement connu sous le terme de phnomne HAROLD (Hemispheric Asymmetry Reduction in OLDer adults). En comparant les patrons damorages de mots motionnels auprs de jeunes adultes et dadultes gs performants des niveaux levs sur le plan comportemental, les rsultats rvlent que lamorage se manifeste unilatralement chez les jeunes participants et bilatralement chez les participants gs. Par ailleurs, lamorage se produit chez les participants gs avec un lger dlai, ce qui peut rsulter dune augmentation des seuils sensoriels chez les participants gs, qui ncessiteraient alors davantage de temps pour encoder les stimuli et entamer lactivation travers le rseau smantique. Ainsi, la performance quivalente au niveau de la prcision retrouve chez les deux groupes de participants et lamorage bilatral observ chez les participants gs sont en accord avec lhypothse de compensation du phnomne HAROLD.

La multiplication dans le corps de Galois 2^m lments (i.e. GF(2^m)) est une oprations trs importante pour les applications de la thorie des correcteurs et de la cryptographie. Dans ce mmoire, nous nous intressons aux ralisations parallles de multiplicateurs dans GF(2^m) lorsque ce dernier est gnr par des trinmes irrductibles. Notre point de dpart est le multiplicateur de Montgomery qui calcule A(x)B(x)x^(-u) efficacement, tant donn A(x), B(x) in GF(2^m) pour u choisi judicieusement. Nous tudions ensuite l'algorithme diviser pour rgner PCHS qui permet de partitionner les multiplicandes d'un produit dans GF(2^m) lorsque m est impair. Nous l'appliquons pour la partitionnement de A(x) et de B(x) dans la multiplication de Montgomery A(x)B(x)x^(-u) pour GF(2^m) mme si m est pair. Bas sur cette nouvelle approche, nous construisons un multiplicateur dans GF(2^m) gnr par des trinme irrductibles. Une nouvelle astuce de rutilisation des rsultats intermdiaires nous permet d'liminer plusieurs portes XOR redondantes. Les complexits de temps (i.e. le dlais) et d'espace (i.e. le nombre de portes logiques) du nouveau multiplicateur sont ensuite analyses: 1. Le nouveau multiplicateur demande environ 25% moins de portes logiques que les multiplicateurs de Montgomery et de Mastrovito lorsque GF(2^m) est gnr par des trinmes irrductible et m est suffisamment grand. Le nombre de portes du nouveau multiplicateur est presque identique celui du multiplicateur de Karatsuba propos par Elia. 2. Le dlai de calcul du nouveau multiplicateur excde celui des meilleurs multiplicateurs d'au plus deux valuations de portes XOR. 3. Nous determinons le dlai et le nombre de portes logiques du nouveau multiplicateur sur les deux corps de Galois recommands par le National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Nous montrons que notre multiplicateurs contient 15% moins de portes logiques que les multiplicateurs de Montgomery et de Mastrovito au cot d'un dlai d'au plus une porte XOR supplmentaire. De plus, notre multiplicateur a un dlai d'une porte XOR moindre que celui du multiplicateur d'Elia au cot d'une augmentation de moins de 1% du nombre total de portes logiques.

In this article, we report the preparation of conducting natural rubber (NR) with polyaniline (Pani). NR was made into a conductive material by the compounding of NR with Pani in powder form. NR latex was made into a conductive material by the in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of NR latex. Different compositions of Pani- NR semi-interpenetrating networks were prepared, and the dielectric properties of all of the samples were determined in microwave frequencies. The cavity perturbation techpique was used for this study. A HP8510 vector network analyzer with a rectangular cavity resonator was used for this study. S bands 2-4 GHz in frequency were used. Thermal studies were also carried out with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.
