Simple air-path models for modern (VGT/EGR equipped) diesel engines are in common use, and have been reported in the literature. This paper addresses some of the shortcomings of control-oriented models to allow better prediction of the cylinder charge properties. A fast response CO2 analyzer is used to validate the model by comparing the recorded and predicted CO2 concentrations in both the intake port and exhaust manifold of one of the cylinders. Data showing the recorded NOx emissions and exhaust gas opacity during a step change in engine load illustrate the spikes in both NOx and smoke seen during transient conditions. The predicted cylinder charge properties from the model are examined and compared with the measured NOx and opacity. Together, the emissions data and charge properties paint a consistent picture of the phenomena occurring during the transient. Alternative strategies for the fueling and cylinder charge during these load transients are investigated and discussed. Experimental results are presented showing that spikes in both NOx and smoke can be avoided at the expense of some loss in torque response. Even if the torque response must be maintained, it is demonstrated that it is still possible to eliminate spikes in NOx emissions for the transient situation being examined. In view of its special features, the brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) shows high potentials to be employed as a variable-speed drive or wind generator. However, the machine suffers from low efficiency and power factor and also high level of noise and vibration due to spatial harmonics. These harmonics arise mainly from rotor winding configuration, slotting effects, and saturation. In this paper, analytical equations are derived for spatial harmonics and their effects on leakage flux, additional loss, noise, and vibration. Using the derived equations and an electromagnetic-thermal model, a simple design procedure is presented, while the design variables are selected based on sensitivity analyses. A multiobjective optimization method using an imperialist competitive algorithm as the solver is established to maximize efficiency, power factor, and power-to-weight ratio, as well as to reduce rotor spatial harmonic distortion and voltage regulation simultaneously. Several constraints on dimensions, magnetic flux densities, temperatures, vibration level, and converter voltage and rating are imposed to ensure feasibility of the designed machine. The results show a significant improvement in the objective function. Finally, the analytical results of the optimized structure are validated using finite-element method and are compared to the experimental results of the D180 frame size prototype BDFIG. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a statistical approach to the electromagnetic analysis of a system that lies within a reverberant cavity that has random or uncertain properties. The need to solve Maxwell's equations within the cavity is avoided by employing a relation known as the diffuse field reciprocity principle, which leads directly to the ensemble mean squared response of the system; all that is required is the impedance matrix of the system associated with radiation into infinite space. The general theoretical approach is presented, and the analysis is then applied to a five-cable bundle in a reverberation room © 2013 EMC Europe Foundation.

The development is described of a computer-controlled bowing machine that can bow a string with a range of gestures that match or exceed the capabilities of a human violinist. Example measurements of string vibration under controlled bowing conditions are shown, including a Schelleng diagram and a set of Guettler diagrams, for the open D string of a cello. For some results a rosin-coated rod was used in place of a conventional bow, to provide quantitative data for comparison with theoretical predictions. The results show qualitative consistency with the predictions of Schelleng and Guettler, but details are revealed that go beyond the limitations of existing models. © S. Hirzel Verlag · EAA.

We theoretically study the conducting electronic contribution to the cohesive force in a metallic nanowire irradiated under a transversely polarized external electromagnetic field at low temperatures and in the ballistic regime. In the framework of the free-electron model, we have obtained a time-dependent two-level electronic wavefunction by means of a unitary transformation. Using a thermodynamic statistical approach with this wavefunction, we have calculated the cohesive force in the nanowire. We show that the cohesive force can be divided into two components, one of which is independent of the electromagnetic field (static component), which is consistent with the existing results in the literature. The magnitude of the other component is proportional to the electromagnetic field strength. This extra component of the cohesive force is originally from the coherent coupling between the two lateral energy levels of the wire and the electromagnetic field.

Behaviors of the photoluminescence blue-band and near-bandgap peak and the relevant thermal ionization energies of the shallow and deep Mg-related acceptors have been studied, respectively. The 2.989 eV blue-band is attributed to the deep donor-acceptor-pair transitions involving a deep Mg-related acceptor at E-v+0.427 eV. The blueshift with increasing excitation power is explained by variation in the contribution of close and distant donor-acceptor-pairs to the luminescence. The redshift with increasing temperature results from thermal release of carriers from close donor-acceptor-pairs. The 3.26 eV near-bandgap peak is attributed to the shallow donor-acceptor-pair transitions involving a shallow Mg-related acceptor at E-v+0.223 eV. The relevant thermal ionization energies of the shallow and deep Mg-related acceptors, being about E-v+0.16 and E-v+0.50eV, are determined from deep-level transient Fourier spectroscopy measurements.

A novel ultra-wideband electromagnetic pulse generating method based on the photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSS) is presented. Gallium arsenide is used to develop the PCSS for an ultrashort electromagnetic pulse source. The pulse generated by such PCSS is within picosecond (ps) time scale, and can yield power pulse with an voltage over 10 kV. The experimental results show that the pulses are stable, with the peak-peak amplitude change of 6% and the time jitter within several picoseconds. The radiations of the PCSS triggered by the picosecond laser and fenitosecond laser pulse series illustrate that the electromagnetic pulses would have high repetition of more than 80 MHz and frequency bandwidth of DC-6 GHz. The radiations of "lock-on " mode of the PCSS are also analyzed here. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The reactions pi(-)p -> eta n and gamma p -> eta p are investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region The meson-baryon channels included are pi N, pi Delta, sigma N, and rho N The direct eta-photoproduction process is studied within a formalism based on a chiral constituent quark model approach, complemented with a one-gluon-exchange mechanism, to take into account the breakdown of the SU(6)circle times O(3) symmetry In the models search, the following known nucleon resonances are embodied S-11(1535), S-11(1650), P-11(1440), P-11(1710), P-13(1720), D-13(1520), D-13(1700), D-15(1675), and F-15(1680). Data for the pi(-)p -> eta n reaction from threshold up to a total center-of-mass energy of W approximate to 2 GeV are satisfactorily reproduced For the photoproduction channel: two additional higher mass known resonances, P-13(1900) and F-15(2000), are also considered However, reproducing the data for gamma p -> eta p requires, within our approach, two new nucleon resonances, for which we extract, mass and width

According to the method of path integral quantization for the canonical constrained system in Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin scheme, the supersymmetric electromagnetic interaction system was quantized. Both the Hamiltonian of the supersymmetric electromagnetic interaction system in phase space and the quantization procedure were simplified. The BRST generator was constructed, and the BRST transformations of supersymmetric fields were gotten; the effective action was calculated, and the generating functional for the Green function was achieved; also, the gauge generator was constructed, and the gauge transformation of the system was obtained. Finally, the Ward-Takahashi identities based on the canonical Noether theorem were calculated, and two relations between proper vertices and propagators were obtained.

In this paper, we expose an unorthodox adversarial attack that exploits the transients of a system's adaptive behavior, as opposed to its limited steady-state capacity. We show that a well orchestrated attack could introduce significant inefficiencies that could potentially deprive a network element from much of its capacity, or significantly reduce its service quality, while evading detection by consuming an unsuspicious, small fraction of that element's hijacked capacity. This type of attack stands in sharp contrast to traditional brute-force, sustained high-rate DoS attacks, as well as recently proposed attacks that exploit specific protocol settings such as TCP timeouts. We exemplify what we term as Reduction of Quality (RoQ) attacks by exposing the vulnerabilities of common adaptation mechanisms. We develop control-theoretic models and associated metrics to quantify these vulnerabilities. We present numerical and simulation results, which we validate with observations from real Internet experiments. Our findings motivate the need for the development of adaptation mechanisms that are resilient to these new forms of attacks.

Soft X-ray transients (SXTs) are a subgroup of low-mass X-ray binaries consisting of a neutron star or a black hole and a companion low-mass star. SXTs exhibit a sudden outburst by increasing the luminosity from ∼ 1033 to ∼ 1036−38ergs1. After spending a few months in outburst, SXTs switch back to quiescence. Optical study of the binary system during the quiescence state of SXTs provides an opportunity to discriminate between BH binaries and neutron star binaries. The first part ot this research is composed of result of 10 years joint project between Hubble space telescope and Chandra, to study SXTs in M31. The other part of this thesis focused on the light curve of bright SXTs in M31. Disc irradiation is thought to be capable of explaining the global behaviour of the light curves of SXTs. Depending on the strength of the central X-ray emission in irradiating the disc, the light curve may exhibit an exponential or a linear decay. The model predicts that in brighter transients a transition from exponential decline to a linear one may be detectable. In this study, having excluded super-soft sources and hard X-ray transients, a sample of bright SXTs in M31 (Lpeak > 1038ergs1) has been studied. The expected change in the shape of the decay function is only observed in two of the light curves from the six light curves in the sample. Also, a systematic correlation between the shape of the light curve and the X-ray luminosity has not been seen.
